It is mid-October, so it is time for all property owners to join us in preparing for the 2024 Board of Directors election. Our team has been hard at work developing this year's ballot packets The candidates are out campaigning. And now it is your turn! We have laid out all the important steps, activities, and key dates for you in this special edition of Big Canoe Living.
1. Take a moment to check that your Big Canoe profile has the correct mailing address and that you are a member in good standing by paying all previous balances due by October 31.
2 Make sure you mail back every ballot you receive and carefully follow the instructions. The number of properties you own equals the number of ballot packets you receive. Return every ballot you receive in each packet using the postage-paid envelopes included with each ballot packet. 1 property = 1 packet, 2 properties = 2 packets, and so on. Note: Lot only = 1 vote, Lot with Dwelling = 2 votes. Big Canoe's votes are property-based, not individual person-based.
3 Know your candidates to make an informed vote You will find links to each candidate's recent fireside chat video and this year's Smoke Signal's Candidate Q & A in this week's Big Canoe Living. You also have the opportunity to meet the candidates live at the Big Canoe Lodge on Nov. 10 from 4 - 6 pm for an informal wine and cheese event hosted by the Election Committee
For detailed election information, a note about your incredible generosity for Hurricane Helene relief efforts from Chief Ricky, and ways to give back this holiday season, please read on, dear neighbors. A quick reminder to please complete the 2024 Amenity Satisfaction Survey sent via email earlier today. Thank you for the gift of your time completing the survey.

Big Canoe Publics safety began planning for the arrival of Helene upon the initial notification of the hurricanes path being projected into Georgia. The Big Canoe community being heavily wooded and the forecasted strong winds and heavy rainfall the potential for tree fall and extended power loss became the immediate concern. Members of the senior management team including all involved department managers and members of Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Department began daily meetings to plan for the arrival of this storm that was classified by the NWS as “unprecedented”. The final day prior to the projected landfall involved many meetings and conference calls to arrange additional staffing and communicate with our county partners to ensure there were clean communication pathways prior to the arrival of the storm.
Due to the storm’s arrival in the North Georgia area around 5:00AM Public Safety had a report time of 4:00AM on September 27 for all staff and Big Canoe volunteer Firefighters. Prior to the arrival of the storm the Public Safety Emergency Operations center was staffed in preparation to manage the response effort, Public Works department had two crews on standby, and the staff and volunteer firefighters had established five teams ready to deploy to help clear roadways and respond to whatever emergencies that may arise A few of our teams were dispatched to clear some trees early in the morning prior to the arrival of the worst weather. Helene made its arrival to Georgia with a fury and continued the damage that began in Florida through south and central Georgia. The initial path projected began to change and by 9:00Am it was clear that the path of Helene was headed slightly to our east Big Canoe did have a few trees that fell due to the winds however overall our community was spared the potential disaster that Helene could have created. By 9:30Am we had officially dodged the storm and all units on standby in Big Canoe were released to return to their normal duties.

Join us for Round Robin Pickleball & Tennis Play on Fridays during the Fall season. No registration required! Beer, wine, & heavy hors d'oeuvres provided Friday, 25 October 2024
Event starts at 5:00 pm
John Murphy became a certified Coach/Instructor by the Professional Pickleball Registry in 2023 after playing Pickleball for several years in Big Canoe. John holds multiple clinics, drill sessions, and private lessons for players from beginners with zero racquet experience to ex-tennis players making the transition to Pickleball. Those who attend any of these events will leave wanting more!
Coach Murphy played tennis for 25 years and was an A-level league player, coach, and instructor for ALTA in the organization’s earlier days. He has carried these skills onto the Pickleball court and dreams of gaining more students and growing the interest in Pickleball to greater heights in Big Canoe.
John believes firmly in the “well-rounded” athletic philosophy where kids are exposed to a variety of sports and allowed to make their own choices of which to pursue on a more competitive level. Coach Murphy has competed as an All-State offensive lineman and tennis state–qualifier in high school. Collegiate and post-collegiate included competitive lacrosse, rowing, and road cycling. Recreationally, he was a skydiver, a commercial softball player, and a long-distance cyclist.
John looks forward to serving the needs of Big Canoe and growing the Pickleball amenity.
If you’re 70 or over and would like to register for the event, call the Pro Shop at 706-268-3367. Lunch at the Lakeside Bistro following. Racquet members play for free, and there will be a $5.00 fee for non-members and guests. (Lunch cost is not included). We hope to see you there!
