Geografía: Ubicada a la entrada del golfo de México, el archipiélago cubano está formado por la isla de Cuba, la Isla de la Juventud y aproximadamente 4,195 cayos e islotes. Cerca de 140 km la separan las Bahamas; 77 km Haití; 180 km de Florida; 210 km Cancún y 146 km de Jamaica. La silueta de Cuba, alargada y estrecha, alcanza los 120 km de longitud y entre 32 y 145 km de ancho. En total el territorio abarca 110.922 km, lo que la distingue como la mayor de las Antillas y por su ubicación geográfica la llaman también la llave del Golfo.

Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall excited by Cuba Del 24 al 27 de abril el Príncipe de Gales y la Duquesa de Cornualles realizaron una intensa visita oficial de cuatro días a Cuba, acompañados por una delegación de alto nivel, que estuvo marcada por una amplia agenda, con actividades culturales y sociales, en un escenario que ambos países aprovecharon para acercar posiciones en temas de interés mutuo. Aunque el heredero al trono del Reino Unido y su esposa no representaron al gobierno, su presencia en la Isla fue considerada por Londres y La Habana una oportunidad para estrechar sus vínculos, impulsados a partir de la presencia en Cuba en 2016 del entonces secretario de Estado para Relaciones Exteriores, Philip Hammond (actual ministro de Hacienda) y de la reciente visita de tránsito al país europeo del presidente cubano, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. Precisamente durante la estancia de los representantes de la realeza en la mayor de las Antillas, fueron recibidos por el presidente Díaz-Canel, con el que sostuvieron un amistoso encuentro en el que intercambiaron criterios acerca del estado de los nexos bilaterales, basados en la cooperación y el respeto mutuo. Una de las primeras actividades de Carlos y Camila fue rendir homenaje al Héroe Nacional de Cuba, José Martí, en el memorial que recuerda al prócer, en la Plaza de la Revolución.

From March 24th-27th, Prince Charles of Wales and Duchess Camilla of Cornwall made an intense four-day official visit to Cuba, accompanied by a high-level delegation. They went through a pretty tight schedule that included cultural and social activities, but in the end it was an opportunity to bring both countries together and to talk about common interests. Although the heir to the throne of the United Kingdom and his wife didn’t come on behalf of their government, their presence on the island symbolized, to people from London and Havana, an opportunity to strengthen our relationships, driven by the presence in Cuba back in 2016 of the previous Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Philip Hammond (now appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer) and by the recent visit to the European country by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez. Precisely during the stay of these royal personalities in the largest island of the Antilles, they were received by President Diaz-Canel, with whom they held a pleasant meeting and exchanged opinions about the status of our bilateral friendship, based on cooperation and mutual respect. One of the first things Charles and Camilla did was to pay homage to the National Hero of Cuba, Jose Marti, in the memorial monument that remembers the Apostle, in Plaza de la Revolucion.

Dentro del movido programa, recorrieron el Centro Histórico de La Habana guiados por su historiador Eusebio Leal y compartieron con los pobladores mitos y leyendas de una ciudad que en breve cumplirá 500 años. Allí visitaron el Hogar Materno Leonor Pérez en el que se brinda atención privilegiada a gestantes con embarazos de riesgo, caminaron las adoquinadas calles, visitaron una antigua barbería y conversaron con la anfitriona, admiraron los populares churros tan degustados por quienes frecuentan el centro histórico, y traspasaron la entrada de un gimnasio en el que jóvenes y niños practicaban boxeo y el Príncipe hasta subió al cuadrilátero. Durante su estancia en La Habana Vieja, develaron una estatua del dramaturgo y poeta inglés William Shakespeare y apreciaron una tarja a propósito de la presencia de tropas británicas en la capital cubana en 1762, bajo el reinado de Jorge III. Mucho conocieron también de la cultura de la Isla con la gala que el Ministro de Cultura ofreciera en su honor, con lo más representativo del arte danzario cubano en el Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso. Según el programa previsto, compartieron con la prestigiosa compañía Acosta Danza en su sede, con la agrupación infantil la Colmenita y con la Camerata Romeu, que les ofreció un atractivo concierto. En los estudios de grabación Areíto de la EGREM, principal casa disquera de la Isla, fueron recibidos por afamados músicos como Eliades Ochoa y Michel Herrera y 8

conocieron del trabajo de conservación de los archivos musicales cubanos. Vale destacar su visita al Centro de Inmunología Molecular, uno de los más importantes de las investigaciones médicas de la isla; así como la presencia de La Duquesa de Cornualles en la sede de la Federación de Mujeres Cubanas, donde fue recibida por su Presidenta y compartió con especialistas de varias instituciones cubanas sobre temas relacionados con igualdad y violencia de género. Mientras, El Príncipe de Gales inauguró la construcción del primer parque solar enclavado en la occidental Zona Especial de Desarrollo de Mariel, el cual aportará 50 megawatts al Sistema Electroenergético Nacional. Según fuentes oficiales, el proyecto es ejecutado por la empresa Mariel Solar S.A., corporación del Reino Unido con una filial ciento por ciento cubana, y es una obra que, en materia de contribución energética, representa la primera de gran escala en Cuba y la mayor de la región. Los vecinos de la barriada del Vedado y caminantes curiosos fueron sorprendidos por la llegada del Príncipe de Gales y La Duquesa de Cornualles al parque John Lennon. Allí conversaron con integrantes de la comunidad británica asentada en la capital cubana, e intercambiaron con miembros del club de motocicletas y autos clásicos ingleses. La llegada de la pareja real fue en un auto británico descapotable, conducido por su Alteza El Príncipe Carlos.

A pocos metros del parque, estuvieron al tanto de cuanto acontece en el club Submarino Amarillo, considerado uno de los sitios de referencia del rock en La Habana, con música grabada y en vivo, en el cual se reverencia el legado de la famosa banda que integraron en la década de 1960 John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison y Ringo Starr. En su variado periplo, sus Altezas Reales El Príncipe de Gales y La Duquesa de Cornualles participaron en una exhibición de comida cubana en un restaurante privado de la capital cubana junto a representantes de la Asociación Culinaria de Cuba y de la página web A la Mesa y, luego de degustar algunos platos típicos, elogiaron el sabor de la cocina de la Isla y hasta llegaron a exprimir un trozo de caña para preparar el dulcísimo guarapo. Fueron a todas luces gratas jornadas en las que tuvieron la oportunidad de vivenciar la historia, la gente, la cultura y los principales proyectos científicos y ambientales de un país que los recibió con los brazos abiertos.

Among the many activities included in their eventful program, they toured the Historical Center of Havana guided by historian Eusebio Leal and shared myths and legends with the people, discovering a city that will shortly be 500 years old. There they visited the Leonor Perez Nursing Home, where privileged attention is provided to women with risky pregnancies; they walked the cobbled streets, entered an old barbershop and talked with the hostess, tasted the popular churros –favorite of those who frequent the historic center–, and visited a gym where young people and children practiced boxing, and the Prince even climbed into the ring… During their stay in Old Havana, they unveiled a statue of the English playwright and poet William Shakespeare and admired a commemorative stone regarding the presence of British troops in the Cuban capital in 1762, under the reign of George III. They found out more about the artistic traditions of the Island with the gala that the Minister of Culture offered in their honor, which incorporated the most representative styles of Cuban dance, in the Gran Teatro de La Habana (“Alicia Alonso”). According to the program, they met the prestigious company Acosta Danza in their seat; also the children’s group La Colmenita and the Camerata Romeu, which gifted them with an attractive concert. In the "Areito" studios of the EGREM, the most important record label of the island, they were welcomed by famous musicians such as Eliades Ochoa and Michel Herrera. There they had the opportunity to learn about the preservation of the Cuban musical patrimony. It is worth highlighting their visit to the Center of Molecular Immunology, one of the most important medical research centers of the island; as well as the presence of the Duchess Camilla of Cornwall at the headquarters of the Federation of Cuban Women, where she was received by its President and talked to specialists from various Cuban institutions about topics related to gender equality and violence. Meanwhile, Prince Charles of Wales inaugurated the construction of the first solar park located in the western Special Development Zone of Mariel, which will contribute with 50 megawatts to the National Electro-energetic System. Solar S.A., a UK corporation that works with a hundred percent Cuban subsidiary company, and this is a project that, in terms of energy contribution, represents the first large-scale one in Cuba and the biggest in the region.

The residents of the neighborhood of Vedado and curious walkers were surprised by the arrival of Prince Charles of Wales and his wife the Duchess Camilla of Cornwall to the John Lennon Park. There they talked to members of the British community settled in the Cuban capital, and shared a nice time with members of the English motorcycle and classic cars club. The royal couple arrived on a convertible British car, driven by His Highness Prince Charles.

During their journey, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall went to an exhibition of Cuban food in a private restaurant of the Cuban capital, along with representatives of the Culinary Association of Cuba and the staff from the website “A la Mesa”. After tasting some typical dishes, they praised the flavor of the island’s cuisine and they even managed to squeeze a piece of cane to prepare the sweet guarapo.

Del 12 de abril al 12 de mayo se celebra en Cuba la 13ª Bienal de La Habana, el mayor evento de las artes visuales de Cuba. Esta edición apuesta por convertir la capital cubana en un “corredor cultural” donde interactúen los creadores y el público. La organización ha confirmado la presencia de más de trescientos artistas procedentes de entre 15 y 20 países, entre ellos, Portugal, Brasil, Colombia, Argentina, México, Francia, Perú y España; y trece premios nacionales de artes plásticas cubanos. El eje temático central del evento La construcción de lo posible, persigue, como han dicho los curadores, dignificar la convivencia entre los seres humanos; con proyectos donde los artistas contemporáneos entiendan la creación como acontecimiento vivo o una experiencia en curso. La organización ha invitado a participar a más de 80 artistas, principalmente de América Latina y El Caribe, África, Asia y Medio Oriente. Una de las novedades de esta edición es que, por primera vez, los organizadores del evento han valorado pertinente su extensión, fuera de la capital, por el desarrollo de las expresiones del arte contemporáneo en esos territorios y las posibilidades de entrelazarlas con otras propuestas. Ríos Intermitentes, en Matanzas, coordinado por María Magdalena Campos Pons; Farmacia, en Pinar del Río, liderado por Juan Carlos Rodríguez; Mar Adentro en Cienfuegos; y en Camagüey el Festival Internacional de Video Arte, rectorado por Jorge Luis Santana, son algunas de las muestras que se podrán visitar fuera de la Habana. Con sede en la capital, no se pueden perder: Taller Chullima, coordinado por Wilfredo Prieto; Corredor Cultural, por Vilma Bartolomé; Intersecciones, por Concha Fontenla; De la Chinoserie al arte contemporáneo, por Teresa Toranza; Detrás del Muro, por Juan Delgado; Intercambios, por Damian Smith; Jababacoa, por Luis Gárciga y CASITA; La Posibilidad Infinita, del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes; el Proyecto de la Fundación Ludwig de Cuba y el Proyecto Pedagógico de la Universidad de las Artes.

Cuba designs an Art Biennial based on a “cultural corridor” The XIII Biennial of Havana –Cuba’s largest visual arts event– will be held from April 12th to May 12th. This edition aims to transform the Cuban capital into a “cultural corridor” where creators and the public interact. The institution has confirmed the presence of more than threehundred artists from 15 to 20 countries, including Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, France, Peru and Spain; as well as thirteen National Prizes of Cuban Visual Arts. The central theme of the event (“The construction of the possible”), pursues, as the curators have said, to dignify the coexistence between human beings; involving projects where contemporary artists understand creation as a living event or an ongoing experience. The institution has invited more than 80 artists to participate, mainly from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. One of the novelties of this edition is that, for the first time, the organizers of the event have planned its expansion outside the capital, in order to promote the development of contemporary art expressions in those territories and the possibilities of interweaving them with other proposals. Intermittent Rivers, in Matanzas, coordinated by Maria Magdalena Campos Pons; Pharmacy, in Pinar del Rio, led by Juan Carlos Rodriguez; Offshore in Cienfuegos; and in Camagüey, the International Festival of Video Art, directed by Jorge Luis Santana, are some of the exhibitions that can be visited outside of Havana.

La XIII Bienal de La Habana tiene un gran prestigio a nivel nacional e internacional, se desarrolla en un contexto único, apuesta por un arte propositivo, exhibe obras terminadas y en procesos que involucran diferentes disciplinas, y no se ata a las directrices del mercado del arte. Based in the capital, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss: Chullima Workshop, coordinated by Wilfredo Prieto; Cultural Corridor, by Vilma Bartolome; Intersections, by Concha Fontenla; From the Chinoserie to contemporary art, by Teresa Toranza; Behind the Wall, by Juan Delgado; Exchanges, by Damian Smith; Jababacoa, by Luis Garciga and CASITA; The Infinite Possibility, of the National Museum of Fine Arts; the Project of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba and the Pedagogical Project of the University of the Arts. The XIII Biennial of Havana has a great prestige nationally and across the world, it is developed in a unique context, it is committed to a purposeful art, it exhibits finished works and processes that involve different disciplines, and it is not attached to the art market guidelines. Contemporary art intervenes in public, institutional and intimate spaces; familiar artists come back and new faces are introduced, and spaces are amplified to bring the insular artistic production to a fresh light, which is conceptually and formally vast, and very heterogeneous. The event oxygenates the Biennial model and represents an oasis for contemporary art in the Caribbean Sea.

exta villa fundada por los españoles en 1519, decretada Ciudad Maravilla en 2017… Capital de todos los cubanos y musa otrora de quienes la habitan y la visitan; lo cierto es que La Habana es una permanente galería abierta al público. La ciudad, propone un paseo cultural desde sus múltiples esculturas. Pintorescas y afamadas personalidades cubanas y de otras latitudes, desde músicos o escritores hasta locos maravillosos descansan en sus calles ofreciendo al visitante disímiles historias… Algunas tan antiguas como la propia Villa. Si comenzamos este viaje en el populoso Parque Central, nos espera José Martí, ubicado justo en medio de los Hoteles Inglaterra, Gran Manzana y Parque Central. Distingue ocho tumbas simbólicas en forma de jardineras para rendir tributo a los estudiantes de medicina fusilados injustamente y que no lejos tienen su monumento permanente. Entrando al Boulevard de la calle Obispo, a la espera de su Daiquirí, en la barra del Bar El Floridita, se encuentra el escritor norteamericano Ernest Heminwgay. Erigido en posición recostado, como dicen gustaba beber, cada día el barman de turno le prepara su trago y lo coloca junto a la estatua, tal vez, para mantener su misticismo y augurar buena jornada.

a Gallery in the Open Sixth Town founded by the Spaniards in 1519, declared Wonder City in 2007…, Capital of all the Cubans and muse of those who inhabit it and visit it. The truth is that Havana is a permanent gallery open to the public. The City proposes a cultural walk from its multiples sculptures. Picturesque and famous Cuban and foreign important figures –from musicians or writers to wonderful mad men and women- rest on its streets, offering the visitor dissimilar stories…, some of them as ancient as the Town itself. If we start this trip at the populous Parque Central [Central Park], José Martí will be waiting for us, placed right in the middle of “Inglaterra” [England], “Gran Manzana” [Big Apple] and “Parque Central” hotels. There stand out eight symbolic tombs in the shape of jardinières to pay tribute to the Medicine students unjustly executed; not far from this place, there rises their permanent monument. At the entrance of the Boulevard of Obispo [Bishop] street, awaiting his daiquiri, at the bar of Floridita Bar, there is the American writer Ernest Hemingway. Erected in leaned up position –as it is said he liked to have his drinks-, each day the shift´s barman prepares his drink and places it next to the statue, maybe to keep his mysticism and to augur a good day.

Muy cercana, emplazada en La Loma del Ángel, salta a la vista seductora y tímida la Cecilia Valdés del escritor Cirilo Villaverde; pieza que recuenta una época de pasiones, atrevimientos y amores en una Habana próxima a festejar su 500 cumpleaños. Escenario que el propio autor escogió para recrear las escenas de su novela. Cientos de turistas visitan diariamente La Cecilia que custodia la Iglesia donde fueron bautizados figuras insignes como José Martí, Félix Varela y Alicia Alonso y a su vez, protege el busto de su creador que desde 1946 se instauró frente a ella. Las Plazas Habaneras, son ejemplos claros de esta galería a cielo abierto. Adoquines y portales resguardan su patrimonio. Es La Plaza Vieja donde una mujer desnuda cabalga un Gallo ofreciendo múltiples lecturas al visitante. Para unos representa esa ciudad que se sobrepone a toda adversidad sin perder sus encantos; para otros significa la mujer cubana que lucha y domina bajo total firmeza. En La Plaza de La Catedral, recostado a una de las columnas del Palacio de Lombillo, el bailarín y coreógrafo español Antonio Gades profesa su profundo amor a Cuba; país donde en último acto de voluntad pidió trasladaran y sepultaran sus cenizas. 16

Por su parte, en La Plaza de San Francisco de Asís, confluyen modernidad, magia y sabiduría. Obra que representa la necesidad de diálogo entre la sociedad contemporánea, La Conversación, desde su propio concepto, rompe con el entorno tradicional de la zona. A pocos pasos, reclinado sobre un banco, descansa el poeta del piano Federico Chopin. Con actitud pensativa y silenciosa, propia de su espíritu romántico, la pieza cautiva a los espectadores. Allí mismo, el mítico Caballero de París, sin dudas el más popular de esta Plaza, recibe constantemente un sinnúmero de personas que reclaman esa suerte del imaginario popular pidiendo fortuna y buenos augurios para los suyos. Petición que, según la leyenda, solo se cumple si se le toca al loco-cuerdo la barba, el dedo índice y la puntera del zapato izquierdo; provocando que esos sitios muestren una brillantez diferente al resto de la estatua. Como quien despide a La Habana Vieja, por el Puerto de la Bahía, es difícil dejar de reverenciarse ante El Cristo y La Giraldilla. Uno, que desafiando al tiempo, bendice la Ciudad mientras la otra, vigía y símbolo de La Habana, ofrece toda la pasión de su historia de amor. Pero, qué sería del Prado capitalino sin la protección de sus Leones o de la Universidad de La Habana sin la acogida del Alma Mater. Cuál sería la maravilla de una Ciudad sin Don Quijote, John Lennon o sus tantas otras esculturas… Esas ya son historias que usted debe aprehender desde su propia experiencia en esta Habana, real y maravillosa.

Very close, sited on La Loma del Ángel [the Angel´s Hillock], there appears, seductive and shy, Cecilia Valdés of the writer Cirilo Villaverde –a piece that tells of a time of passions, audacities and loves in a Havana next to celebrating its 500 birthdate. Scenery that the author himself chose for recreating the scenes of his novel. Every day, hundreds of tourists visit La Cecilia, which guards the Church where there were baptized notable figures like José Martí, Félix Varela and Alicia Alonso, and which protects the bust of its creator, positioned in front of it ever since 1946. Administrada por la Empresa Extrahotelera Palmares S.A, abrió sus puertas hace unos meses en el afamado balneario, la Factoría Varadero 43, una exquisita fábrica de cerveza no solo por el sabor de su producto sino por su entorno embellecido por el azul de la playa y la hospitalidad y alegría de su gente. Ubicada en el mismo centro de Varadero, en la esquina de las calles 43 y Avenida de la Playa, la Factoría de Cerveza se concibió como nueva propuesta extrahotelera para el inicio de la llamada temporada alta del turismo, y desde su apertura recibe cada día a cientos de clientes de varios países, deseosos de degustar la cerveza helada. La factoría, construida con tecnología austríaca, tiene la singularidad de que muestra al visitante parte del proceso de elaboración artesanal de la refrescante bebida, que según los gustos se puede elegir entre cerveza negra, oscura, clara y la malta, acompañada de tapas tradicionales o de una gastronomía especialmente diseñada para maridar con la bebida. La instalación turística cuenta con maestros cerveceros muy experimentados quienes concentrados con esmero en su labor, imprimen un toque delicioso a los mil litros que producen diariamente de estos productos, desde el 26 de septiembre de 2018. En una conversación sostenida con ellos, nos comentaron que es vital que el cliente encuentre una temperatura ideal en su bebida, así como excelencia en el resto de los parámetros de desgustación de la cerveza. Pero, sobre todo que, en cada una de sus visitas al lugar, cada cliente compruebe que el sabor no ha variado y que puede deleitarse con el mismo producto que antes lo había cautivado.

In a conversation with them, they told us that it is very important for the client to find their drinks cold enough, and that also depends on the excellence of the other beer tasting parameters. But, above all, in each of their visits to the place, every client should verify that the taste has not changed, and that they can take pleasure from the same product that had previously captivated them.

Los maestros cerveceros de la Factoría Varadero 43 recibieron adiestramiento previo en otras fábricas artesanales en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba y en Trinidad, y disfrutan al explicar el proceso a los turistas nacionales y foráneos, que cada día llegan a calmar la sed con una helada cerveza y que quieren conocer las interioridades de la fabricación de esta bebida, totalmente ecológica, elaborada ciento por ciento a partir de productos naturales. Los profesionales cuentan que se comienza desde la recepción del grano, se pasa luego a la molienda, la maceración, filtración, hervidura, sedimentación, enfriamiento y posterior fermentación durante veintiún días, para enviarla a los tanques de despacho y poderla dispensar. Es un proceso no solo atractivo para quienes forman parte de él sino para quienes deciden adentrase más en los secretos de una de las bebidas de su preferencia.

Así pues, “El sabor líquido de lo cubano” en su segunda edición ha recorrido la ínsula en busca de un coctel que provoque emociones, homenajee la tradición ronera de Cuba, la herencia de los cantineros cubanos y también haga honor a los 25 años que cumple la empresa. El reto comenzó en Santiago de Cuba; y en el hotel Iberostar Casa Granda se dio cita parte de lo que más vale y brilla del Oriente si de cantina se trata. El objetivo: desnudar las innúmeras posibilidades que el ron Perla del Norte (Carta Blanca, Oro o Añejo) puede entregar a un buen coctel, ya sea aperitivo, digestivo o refrescante. El resultado no pudo ser más atractivo. Frente a la mirada atenta de esa tierra llena de música y sonrisas diez cantineros derrocharon creatividad y habilidades técnicas mientras competían por su puesto en la Gran Final. Concursar con un ron del otro lado de la isla aportó nuevos matices al quehacer de los contendientes. De hecho, todos recalcan cuán impulsor ha sido el torneo para estudiar a profundidad la vastísima gama que propone en su carpeta la Corporación. La cita fue también pretexto para ir más allá de la 32

zona de confort definida por aquellos espirituosos de mayor conocimiento tras la barra y, por tanto, buscar gracias al Perla del Norte, otras sensaciones, crear renovadas delicias, provocar... Tres fueron los finalistas elegidos para defender el área más tórrida de la isla en el certamen nacional: Eyleen Velázquez (Camagüey), William Caraballo (Santiago de Cuba) y Esteban Rodríguez (Guantánamo), descollaron por su pericia y capacidad de innovación. Para ellos mezclar lo mejor de Cuba -como enuncia la convocatoria- representa una oportunidad ideal para entrenar, ganar en experiencia y buscar otras fuentes de inspiración. Fue motivo para evolucionar, justipreciar el esfuerzo, empeño y dedicación que implica dedicarse a esta profesión y, sobre todo, expandir horizontes, promover cambios. Al respecto de cuán relevante es que se desarrollen lides de esta magnitud Raúl Eduardo Domínguez Llorente, Vocal Zonal de la Asociación de Cantineros de Cuba en Oriente enfatiza: “para nosotros significa mucho que Cuba Ron decidiera hacer una segunda edición de este evento en pos de defender qué es el ron cubano. También ha

sido un acierto que no se empleen rones propios del área de competencia, porque impulsa la creatividad. La cantina cubana gana mucho y, no solo por la participación de tantos buenos profesionales, sino también por demostrar de modo tan práctico la soltura de nuestros rones y sus capacidades de mezcla. Más que hablar de una región en particular, se trata de Cuba y su Ron Ligero, del trabajo de las tres destilerías, del aprendizaje, el intercambio. La coctelería cubana es una sola, no importa dónde. Hablamos del cantinero, ese que busca las mejores combinaciones para hacer del ron cubano un éxito en el mundo entero, y del magnífico potencial que tienen nuestros profesionales”. Sí; la pasión por lo que somos es un hecho. El primer encuentro regional lo ratifica. El evento, lleno de visualidad, clase y experticia ha sido también un excelente medidor de la vitalidad que abraza hoy a la cantina y la tradición ronera cubana: dos fuentes nutricias de nuestra identidad, ávidas de sugerentes retos y renovadas experiencias que hagan de la cubanía, su abolengo y su sabor, la mejor de las combinaciones.

Una nación que se derrama. A nation that spill

Thus, “El sabor líquido de lo cubano” (“The liquid flavor of Cuba”) in its second edition has toured the island searching for a cocktail that inspires emotions, pays homage to the Cuban rum tradition, the heritage of the Cuban bartenders and also honors the 25th anniversary of the company. The challenge began in Santiago de Cuba; and at the Iberostar Casa Granda hotel it was praised what’s best and shinier of the East, regarding canteens. The goal: to uncover the innumerable possibilities that Perla del Norte rum (Carta Blanca, Oro or Añejo) can deliver to a good cocktail, whether aperitif, digestive or refreshing. The result could not be more attractive. Faced with the attentive look of a land full of music and smiles, ten bartenders invested their creativity and technical skills while competing for a place in the Grand Final. Competing with rum from the other side of the island brought new nuances to the work of the contestants. In fact, they all emphasize how important the tournament has been to study in depth the vast range presented by the Corporation in its portfolio. The reunion was also a pretext to go beyond the comfort

zone defined by those experts behind the bar and, therefore, thanks to the Pearl of the North, they were invited to look after new sensations, to unveil secret delights, to inflame desires... Three were the finalists chosen to defend the most torrid area of the island in the national contest: Eyleen Velazquez (Camagüey), William Caraballo (Santiago de Cuba) and Esteban Rodriguez (Guantanamo), they all stood out for their expertise and capacity for innovation. For them, mixing the best of Cuba –as the call states– represents an ideal opportunity to train, gain experience and seek other sources of inspiration. It was a motivation to evolve, to appreciate the effort, commitment and dedication implied in this profession, and, above all, to expand horizons and promote changes. Regarding the importance of the development of such projects, Raul Eduardo Dominguez Llorente, Zonal Member of the Association of Cuban Bartenders in the East, emphasizes: “For us it means a lot that Cuba Ron decided to launch a second edition of this event in order to defend what Cuban rum

uba sabe a coco, café, cacao, cítricos, piña... es especial y delicada en la mezcla, sugerente al paladar. Notas de canela, miel y anís la aderezan y se desdoblan para hacer de ella una combinación inesperada, para interpretarla. Son esencias del Trópico, de la cubanidad, que en la segunda Competencia de Coctelería “El sabor líquido de lo cubano” han sido lienzo idóneo para plasmar todos nuestros matices, acunados en lo mejor del ron antillano. La voz resuena. El recorrido degustativo iniciado al Oriente de la isla continúa atesorando éxitos y delicias. Con las lides de la región Central la experiencia se fortalece. La expectativa es apasionante. Un gran final se anticipa. En la competencia del centro de la isla nueve cantineros desplegaron arte y sapiencia utilizando el icónico ron Santiago de Cuba (Carta Blanca o Añejo). Como un canto a la cultura, la tradición ronera de la Mayor de las Antillas, los rasgos melosos del aguardiente oriental y también la longevidad y vigor de una comunidad como la de los cantineros cubanos (la más antigua agrupación de bartenders registrada en el mundo), el certamen discurrió lleno de confraternización y buenas prácticas. Muchos rostros jóvenes se lanzaron al reto, prueba del empuje de los Juniors en el inquieto arte de las mezclas.

Mixing identities Cuba tastes like coconut, coffee, cocoa, citrus, pineapple... it is special and delicate in the mix, suggestive to the palate. Glimpses of cinnamon, honey and anise combine and unfold to make it an unexpected recipe, to understand it. These are essences of the Tropic, of the Cuban spirit, that in the Second Cocktail Competition “El sabor líquido de lo cubano” (“The liquid flavor of Cuba”) have been the ideal canvas to capture all our nuances, cradled in the best of the Antillean rum. The voice resounds. The tasting tour initiated in the East of the island continues to treasure successes and delights. The experience is strengthened with the efforts of the Central region. The prospects are exciting. A great ending is anticipated. In the competition of the center of the island, nine bartenders deployed art and wisdom using the iconic Santiago de Cuba rum (Carta Blanca or Añejo). As a song to the culture, the rum-line tradition of the Greater of the Antilles, the mellow traits of the eastern liquor and also the longevity and vigor of a community like that of the Cuban bartenders (the oldest registered bartenders group in the world), the event ran full of fraternization and good practices. Many young faces accepted the challenge, an evidence of the push of the Junior competitors in the restless art of mixing.

Dos fueron los elegidos para representar dicha región en el torneo nacional. Yelena Lorenzo, volvió a liderar; segunda dama para enaltecer que la cantina no cree en géneros, sino en buenas propuestas. Asimismo, Enmanuel Pérez continúa su estela de triunfos y retorna para (otra vez), competir por el lauro mayor. Su historia de estudiante de turismo apasionado por la coctelería demuestra cuán seductora es esta profesión; así como la importancia del estudio, la voluntad, la inspiración y las ganas de seguir creciendo. Alexis Torres, vocal de la ACC en el área, recalca que es “un evento de muy buen gusto donde ganamos todos: tanto la empresa como los cantineros y el público que día a día recibe nuestros servicios. Es ir más allá del regionalismo de una forma novedosa e integradora. Ha sido una oportunidad para aprender e incentivar 36

a los más jóvenes a atreverse, crear, foguearse y dar un mejor servicio al cliente, para quien trabajamos”. Por su parte, Yohandro Matos, jefe de los jueces del comité gestor en Santiago de Cuba y también evaluador en la eliminatoria central, apunta: “ha sido estupendo participar en ambas competiciones. Desde la primera edición quisimos continuar estos encuentros por todo el aprendizaje que aportan. Cuba Ron tiene una gama amplísima de productos y ha hecho muy bien en exponerlos de esta manera. Los cantineros defendemos el Ron Ligero más allá de marcas, es una defensa de la cubanía y de una tradición ronera con más de siglo y medio produciendo destilados espectaculares. “Se ha despertado mucha curiosidad. Mover los rones regionales ha sido magnífico: los participantes tuvieron que

salir de lo acostumbrado e innovar, usar toda su destreza y conocimiento utilizando también licores de la Corporación, para nada desdeñables pues, como se ha demostrado, tienen calidad, versatilidad y solo requiere saberlos dosificar. Reflejan nuestros aromas típicos, nuestro trópico, es lo autóctono”, concluye. Por ello “El sabor líquido de lo cubano” es una competencia de vivencias traducidas en cocteles. Se ve en el nervio de cada concursante, la habilidad de sus gestos, el atrevimiento de sus combinaciones, la expresividad de las mixturas. Cuba Ron, ha sacado al ruedo algunos de sus espirituosos más representativos junto con su vasta gama de licores y el resultado deslumbra. En estas aguas se van desdoblando los profesionales de la isla. Hay cantera, hay mucha pasión y hay ron del bueno para atreverse, para saborear a Cuba de verdad.

Two were chosen to represent that region in the national tournament. Yelena Lorenzo returned to lead; second lady to praise that the canteen does not believe in genders, but in good proposals. His personal story as a Tourism student, passionate about cocktails, shows how seductive this profession is; as well as the importance of the study, the will, the inspiration and the desire to continue growing. Alexis Torres, vocal of the ACC in the area, points out that this is “a high-quality event where we all win: the company and the bartenders, as well as the public that receives our services every day. It is to go beyond regionalism in a new and integrating way. It has been an opportunity to learn and

encourage the youngest to dare, create, develop and give a better service to the client, for whom we work”. On the other hand, Yohandro Matos, head of the judges of the management committee in Santiago de Cuba and also an evaluator in the central round, points out: “It has been great to participate in both competitions. From the first edition we wanted to continue these meetings for all the learning they bring. Cuba Ron has a wide range of products and has done very well in exposing them in this way. The bartenders defend the Light Rum beyond brands; it is a defense of the Cuban rum tradition, with more than a century and a half producing spectacular distillates”. “A lot of curiosity has been awakened. Moving the regional rums has been magnificent: the participants had to leave the usual way and innovate, use all their skills and knowledge

by mixing the liquors of the Corporation – which ought not to go unnoticed, as has been shown–: they have quality, versatility and it is only required to know their adequate doses. They reflect our typical aromas, our tropics, it is the autochthonous spirit”, he concludes. For that reason “The liquid flavor of Cuba” is a competition of experiences translated into cocktails. It is visible in the excitement of each contestant, the skill of their gestures, the daring of their combinations, the expressiveness of the mixtures. Cuba Ron has brought to the ring some of its most representative spirituous drinks along with its vast range of liquors, and the result dazzles. In these waters the professionals of the island are unfolding. There is a battle, there is a lot of passion and there is good rum to dare, to taste Cuba for real.

Aquí vamos, con una isla recorrida y una tradición que se derrama en cada gota de ron cubano que atempera vasos y copas para dar paso a un coctel recién nacido, apetitoso, triunfador. Al Occidente del caimán llega el certamen y de Matanzas a Pinar del Río el sabor y el estilo han sido los baluartes de la veintena de cantineros contendientes. Dos grandes momentos, cuatro ganadores y un público cada vez más entusiasta ponen chispa a una competición nacional que se anticipa trepidante. El ron es eje y motivo. Y de las tierras centrales provino el último de los alfiles en esta partida de gustos y autenticidad. El ron Cubay (Carta Blanca, Dorada, Añejo Suave o Añejo), continúa la provocación que sus hermanos iniciaran en las otras lides regionales y con sus deleitantes, tentadores perfiles, sacó lo mejor de los cantineros del área. Es lo que tienen los productos de Cuba Ron: calidad y herencia para disfrutar. Así lo reafirma Carlos Rafael Soto, Vicepresidente Primero de la Corporación: “Este evento integra la forma y la cultura del ron cubano, de sus Maestros, junto a los de la coctelería cubana. Here we go, with a mystical island and a tradition that is poured into every drop of Cuban rum, taming cups and glasses to make way for a new, appetizing, successful cocktail. The contest arrives to the West of the caiman and, from Matanzas to Pinar del Rio, the flavor and style have been the bastions of the contending bartenders. Two great moments, four winners and an increasingly enthusiastic public put a spark to a national competition that is highly anticipated. Rum is the axis and the motive. And from the central lands came the last of the bishops in this game of tastes and authenticity. The Cubay rum (Carta Blanca, Dorada, Añejo Suave or Añejo), continues the provocation that its siblings initiated in the other regional lines and with its delightful, tantalizing profiles, brought out the best of the bartenders in the area. This is what Cuba Ron products have: quality and a solid heritage to enjoy. FESTIVAL PIÑA COLADA FUSIÓN DE MÚSICA, ALEGRÍA Y CUBANÍA Por / By Dianik Flores

propósito de la celebración en Cuba del Festival Piña Colada, del 3 al 7 de abril, conversamos con el popular músico cubano Arnaldo Rodríguez, director de la orquesta Arnaldo y su Talismán y de estos eventos que cada año tienen lugar en la provincia de Ciego de Ávila. Arnaldo, háblame de la génesis del Festival Piña Colada y cómo ha sido posible para ti mantenerlo vivo durante 16 años? El Festival Piña Colada surgió de la necesidad que teníamos numerosos músicos cubanos de crear un espacio de interacción y promoción de la música fusión o alternativa, que fuera exponente de mezcla de géneros y estilos musicales. A la vez, quisimos crear un evento que distinguiera el acontecer sociocultural de la provincia Ciego de Ávila. Ha sido un empeño constante mantener este Festival que se ha consolidado como un evento de relevancia cultural en Cuba y con sus "altas y bajas", creo que hemos ido en ascenso, y eso lo evidencia la cantidad de artistas que prestigian cada edición.

¿Qué novedades tiene esta edición y qué figuras llegarán a los escenarios no solamente de la isla sino de otras latitudes? Este año todo el mundo está muy entusiasmado pues tener como apertura de los conciertos al grupo Orishas es un hecho notorio. Es la primera vez que actuarán para el público avileño y promete ser un momento inolvidable. Al igual que el grande Descemer Bueno, tan reconocido a nivel mundial, y que por primera vez se presentará en la provincia. Se suman a ellos muchos artistas valiosos y relevantes del acontecer nacional e internacional, los cuales intercambiarán escenario con talentos de Ciego de Ávila. Por mencionar a algunos te puedo enumerar a Buena Fe, Alain Pérez, Qva Libre, Talismán, Diego Gutiérrez, Telmary Y Habana Sana, Brenda Navarrete, David Torrens, varios jazzistas y muchos otros que también son muy talentosos. Como novedad, celebraremos el 55 aniversario de la EGREM, Casa Discográfica más importante y a la cual pertenezco como artista y eso de seguro será una gran fiesta. Además de los conciertos, qué otros eventos tienen lugar en esta fiesta? ¿Qué entidades colaboran en aras de que sea exitosa su celebración? En el Festival se celebra un simposio que lleva por nombre Música, Juventud y Sociedad, en el cual intervienen prestigiosos intelectuales, musicólogos y pedagogos. En él debatiremos sobre la música que se hace desde y para los jóvenes y su reflejo en la sociedad. También nos detenemos en temáticas sobre la música como ente formador de valores, y te aseguro que será una vez más muy interesante y actual. Siempre he dicho que sin el apoyo y la entrega de las autoridades de Ciego de Ávila sería imposible realizar un evento de esta magnitud. Hay que agradecer también a la

fusion of music, joy and cuban life style On the occasion of the celebration in Cuba of the Piña Colada Festival, from April 3rd to April 7th, we talked with the popular Cuban musician Arnaldo Rodríguez, conductor of the orchestra ¨Arnaldo and his Talismán¨ and director of these events that take place every year in Ciego of Avila Province. Arnaldo, tell me about the genesis of Piña Colada Festival and how it has been possible for you to keep it alive for 16 years? The Piña Colada Festival arose from the need that many Cuban musicians had to create a space for interaction and promotion of fusion or alternative music, which was a mixture of genres exponent and of musical styles. At the same time, we wanted to create an event that would distinguish the sociocultural events of Ciego de Ávila province. It has been a constant effort to keep this Festival that has consolidated itself as an event of cultural relevance in Cuba and with its "ups and downs", I think we have been on the rise, and that is evidenced by the number of artists who enhance the prestige of each edition. What's new in this edition and what figures will come to the stages not only from the island but also from other latitudes? This year everyone is very excited because having the Band ¨Orishas¨ open the concerts is a remarkable fact. It is the first time they will perform for the public of Ciego de Avila and it promises to be an unforgettable time. Just like the great Descemer Bueno, so recognized worldwide, and that for the first time he will have his performance in the province. They will be joined by many valuable and relevant artists of national and international events, who will share the stage with talents of Ciego de Ávila. As a novelty, we are going to celebrate the 55th anniversary of EGREM, the most important Record Label and to which I belong as an artist and that is for sure going to be a great party.

Besides the concerts, what other events are going to take place at this party? What organizations collaborate in order to make this celebration successful? In the Festival, a symposium is going to be held, which is called “Music, Youth and Society”, of which prestigious intellectuals, musicologists and pedagogues are going to take part. In it we are going to discuss about the music that is made by and for young people and its reflection in society. We are also going to focus on topics about music as a value-building entity, and I assure you that once again it is going to be a very interesting and current event. I have always said that without the support and commitment of the authorities in Ciego de Ávila, it would be impossible to hold an event of such magnitude. We must also thank EGREM, MUSICUBA Agency, the Cuban Music Institute, ARTEX, and the cultural institutions of the province, as well as our sponsors: La Estancia, Cubaron, Havana Club, and so many others as well.

What happens every April in Ciego de Ávila Town? What kind of atmosphere is breathed in that city? Uff... The truth is you can’t sleep, Ciego de Ávila becomes the capital of music in those days. It is a lot more than a Carnival. It is a revelry of good music and joy. What are your expectations and how would you motivate the readers of our Welcome Magazine to participate and enjoy what happens there? I hope it will be another successful edition to remember. And to the visitors that arrive on the island or readers of “Welcome”, if you do not know the event, encourage yourself to attend its wide program of cultural activities. uando el 14 de febrero de 1988 se iniciaba la primera edición del Festival La Huella de España en la explanada del Castillo de la Real Fuerza -una de las más antiguas fortalezas construidas en América, muy próxima a la entrada de la Bahía de La Habana-, nadie imaginó la magnitud que alcanzaría este evento. El Festival surgió como un proyecto cultural del entonces Cónsul General de España en Cuba, el Sr. D. Juan José Santos Aguado y de la Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso, directora general del Ballet Nacional de Cuba, entonces también directora del Gran Teatro de La Habana. La intención era mostrar las raíces culturales españolas presentes en la cultura cubana, la vida y las costumbres de las regiones y comunidades autónomas españolas. Aquí están representadas manifestaciones artísticas y culturales como la danza, la música, la plástica, el canto lírico, la poesía y el teatro, para disfrute de los espectadores. Muchas instituciones cubanas y españolas han apoyado el evento, y desde 1998, se ha dedicado a comunidades como Valencia, Andalucía, Islas Canarias, Galicia, Asturias, Cataluña e Islas Baleares, con la participación de sus prestigiosas agrupaciones y artistas, así como de una importante representación cubana. Desde ese mismo año, su coordinadora general es la maestra Miriam Vila y su actual directora artística es la bailarina y coreógrafa Irene Rodríguez. Ambas anunciaron que esta XXVIII edición, del 8 al 14 de abril, estará dedicada al País Vasco. La Gala Inaugural será el lunes 8 de abril en la Calle de Madera, frente al Museo de la Ciudad, antiguo Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, a las 20:45 sincronizado con la ceremonia del Cañonazo que cada noche tiene lugar en la Cabaña, y la clausura el domingo 14 a las 17:00 en el céntrico Teatro Mella. En esta ocasión el programa abarca galas variadas y la presencia de artistas y agrupaciones cubanas y vascas, como el Ballet Nacional de Cuba, El Ballet Español de Cuba, La Compañía de Irene Rodríguez, El Coro Entrevoces, Ivette Cepeda, Luna Manzanares, Adrián Berazaín, Corina Mestre, Ray Fernández y el cantautor vasco Tontxu Ipiña, así como grupos danzarios de la Federación de Sociedades Españolas en Cuba.

Hasta cincuenta ( 50) unidades de tabaco torcido, con la condición que estén contenidos en el envases originales, cerrado, sellado y con el holograma oficial establecido, exigencias sin las cuales no se autoriza la exportación. Cantidad en exceso de cincuenta (50) unidades de tabaco torcido, las cuales no pueden exceder el valor de los 5,000.00 CUC, deben presentar la factura de venta oficial expedida por la red de tiendas autorizadas a comercializar tabacos torcidos cubanos, correspondiente a todo el tabaco torcido que intenten extraer y que necesariamente tiene que estar contenidos en envases originales, cerrados y sellados y con el holograma oficial establecido. Las cantidades de tabaco torcido en exceso de las cincuentas (50) unidades que no sea declarado por el viajero y cualquier cantidad que exceda lo declarado, o que habiéndose declarado no se acredite su adquisición lícita mediante la factura de venta oficial o los envases no posean los atributos y demás exigencias que lo identifican como tabaco torcido cubano, dará lugar al decomiso.
