The campaign to build the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion in Needham started with a vision years ago to bring world-class cancer and surgical services a little closer to home.

Together, with the strength of our community and friends, we made that and the opening of our new building happen.

As we celebrate the close of the campaign, we wanted to step back and recognize those that have helped us accomplish so much. In my years as a hospital CEO, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many community leaders to improve health care delivery to their friends, families and neighbors. It has been a privilege to work with such dedicated and inspired individuals that are found in the community that supports our hospital. Your enthusiasm is matched by your appetite and desire to continue to do big things.

Our vision for the hospital has been driven by a widening perspective of what is possible and what could be. That has been the foundation for quality and growth at BID–Needham. That vision is constantly pushing us forward, so that each of our dreams is bigger than the one before it. As we look to our next exciting chapter, the future is bright for BID–Needham. A LETTER FROM OUR CHIEF DEVELOPMENT & EXTERNAL RELATIONS OFFICER

When we set out on a five-year campaign to raise $6 million, I could not have imagined the overwhelming outpouring of support that we were about to receive. Over a thousand of our grateful patients and family members, physicians, employees, volunteers and friends stepped forward with their support. One year earlier than expected, we broke through our $6 million goal, raising $7.8 million, with the focus of bringing world-class cancer care and surgical services to Needham.

The campaign for the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion in Needham is the largest in the history of the hospital. This issue of Giving Strength celebrates this unprecedented accomplishment, which was made possible by the generosity and dedication of the community.

It is an honor to work with such dedicated leaders as Rick Davis, who has been a resolute ally for the hospital, and Greg Hoffmeister, who, along with Michael Lombard, served as the co-chair of the Development Committee during the campaign and worked tirelessly to ensure its success. It is also because of those individual physicians who have stepped forward to give personally, alongside departments like the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Department of Anesthesia and the Department of Radiation Oncology. I hope you enjoy reading about them and others in the pages that follow.

Equally important, we celebrate this accomplishment because of every single person who supported this effort. We’ve reached new heights thanks to you — our incredible circle of friends. Every gift we received was met with enthusiasm and gratitude. Each of you has a story, and uncovering those stories in the Campaign Close issue of Giving Strength has been a pleasure.

A commitment to community A conversation with Rick Davis, BID–Needham donor and former Chair of the Board of Trustees.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience working with BID–Needham?

Moving the needle in the health care experience for a patient can be very difficult, and improving that experience has to be a priority — day in and day out. That’s about more than a six-month campaign; it’s a way of living — a culture. BID–Needham has shown an overwhelming commitment to higher quality health care. There’s a sense of dedication that can be seen across the entire hospital — I’ve felt it since my first day on the board.

What are the biggest benefits of being connected to the Beth Israel Deaconess system?

We’ve always had a very loyal and accomplished staff of nurses and physicians here in Needham.

But being connected to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers us an expanded network of talent. That connection with BIDMC means the care you receive in Needham is an extension of what’s offered in Boston. We’re making huge strides in building up the capabilities of BID–Needham, and that’s fundamentally changing the way people think about community health care.

You recently made a gift to the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion Campaign. What inspires your giving?

The BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion in Needham is an enormous leap in the quality of the treatment experience. My wife Gail and I have some very good friends who are fighting battles with cancer, so we’re strong believers in having improved and modernized cancer and surgical facilities here in Needham. Having that type of critical treatment available right in our community is so important.

Talk about the importance of giving to local institutions like BID–Needham.

Gail and I believe high-quality health care is a basic right and that people should have that right wherever they live. As residents, we felt empowered to make that part of life here in Needham.

Greg Hoffmeister, a fifth-generation Needham resident, has witnessed countless changes in the town, chief among them the growth and evolution of BID–Needham.

An entrepreneurial spirit Greg’s hands-on relationship with BID–Needham began in 2008, when he joined the Board of Advisors, lending his expertise, support and ambassadorship to the hospital. Since then, he’s served on the Board of Trustees, the Development Committee, the Gala Committee, and most recently as cochair of the hospital’s last two capital campaigns and cochair of the development committee.

Hoffmeister is cofounder and managing director of T3 Advisors, a corporate real estate consulting and brokerage firm with offices in Boston, Palo Alto and San Francisco.

Greg believes that this professional experience aligns well with the entrepreneurial spirit that exists at the hospital.

“At my core, I’m an entrepreneur, and I’ve witnessed that same mindset here at BID–Needham,” he says. “For example, when it came time to decide on the expansion of the BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion, we didn’t have all the answers. But we rolled up our sleeves as a team and made it happen. That’s the mentality of this board, and the hospital as a whole has embraced it too.”

Leading by example The Hoffmeister’s gift to the BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion — which was the first to the campaign — was crucial to its success. It also served as an opportunity to galvanize others to give, and it provided Greg with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to honor his family’s legacy in Needham. “I wanted to step up and show people the importance of supporting such a vital part of our community,” he says. “But the gift itself was something that I gave in honor of my grandparents, Barbara and Ralph Leader, who were life-long, dedicated Needham residents. For me, it’s all about my family’s roots in Needham. I support BID–Needham because I want it to be a resource for many generations of Hoffmeisters to come.”

NEW BREASTCARE CENTER

ITS DOORS Ask breast surgeon Mary Jane Houlihan, MD, to describe the Center that she is codirecting at BID–Needham, and she’s quick to point out that it’s much more than a “breast cancer center.” In fact, the hospital’s new BreastCare Center will be the Needham community’s home for comprehensive care, providing routine breast screenings for up to 15,000 patients a year.

Designed for patients, by patients The entire BreastCare Center space — from waiting rooms to patient rooms — was designed with patient input. “From the time a patient is greeted at the door, we aim to provide the most convenient, private and calming environment,” says Mehta. “We want to make them as comfortable as they can be while, at the same time, ensuring that our radiologists and clinicians have the best equipment and resources.”

The BreastCare Center will utilize the latest 3D mammography, breast MRIs and ultrasounds — all read by expert breast imagers who also practice at BIDMC. “Reducing the wait time for results makes a

huge impact,” says Houlihan. “And if there is a finding on a mammogram or ultrasound, being able to deal with it as soon as possible brings relief and assurance.”

BID–Needham’s state-of-the-art Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion provides patients with immediate access to breast surgery and reconstruction, as well as ongoing treatment and support services. The close connection to the Cancer Center at BIDMC in Boston offers patients in Needham access to the latest clinical trials and research.

BIDMC’s world-renowned breast pathology team reviews every surgical biopsy performed at BID–Needham. “The breast pathologists at BIDMC are known nationally and internationally as leaders in their field,” says Houlihan. When a cancer diagnosis is made, the breast pathologist, along with the breast surgeon, radiation and medical oncologists, radiologist and social worker, create a care plan that is individualized to the patient.

Getting and giving back For Needham resident Carol Bolton Kappel, the new Center has special meaning. She clearly recalls the April day when she discovered an unfamiliar lump — a tumor in its early stages. Her gynecologist, Renee Goldberg, MD, sent her to get an ultrasound.

A subsequent biopsy revealed that Carol had cancer, a reality that one in eight women will face in their lifetime. Her journey led her to BID–Needham and

BIDMC surgeon Dr. Houlihan. Carol underwent surgery with Dr. Houlihan, and once she recovered from her surgery, she began her treatment. Traveling between the Cancer Center at BIDMC in Boston and BID–Needham, she underwent chemotherapy, radiation and infusion treatments.

Today, Carol is back to running and is cancer free. As her treatment winded down, she passionately began advocating for the hometown institution and caregivers that saved her life. She lent her voice and energy to the BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion Campaign so that others facing cancer would have access to world-class care and resources.

During the 2015 gala auction, Carol Bolton Kappel shared her story to raise funds for the new BreastCare Center.

As BID–Needham began construction on its BreastCare Center at Needham in 2015, Carol shared her story in front of a crowd of 800 at the last BID –Needham gala. As she told her story, auction paddles began rising, which led to $90,000 in donations that night to kick-start fundraising for the new BreastCare Center.

It’s a role that Carol is proud to have played. “It’s thrilling to know that patients will have this incredible new space where caregivers work side-by-side to focus on giving patients their life back.”

Visit the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion in Needham, and you’ll notice a plaque in the ground level waiting room etched with four names: Levine, Levine, Heafitz and Shalom. Those who know the men behind these names might chuckle, because waiting is not something any of them are known for. In fact, as cofounders and principals of Equity Industrial Partners (EIP), they live in the fast-paced world of industrial and commercial real estate.

Don Levine, Bruce Levine, Lewis Heafitz and Neal Shalom have been leaders in commercial real estate since opening EIP in 1995. Over that time, they’ve acquired, developed, and sold over 65 million square feet of real estate, becoming one of the top owners of commercial, industrial and office space in the region.

Steadfast support Native Bostonian and a longtime Needham resident Don Levine has received care at BID–Needham for more than 50 years. He and his wife Barbara have played an important role in the expansion of BID–Needham, supporting the hospital’s growth through its last two major capital campaigns.

ANESTHESIA: AT THE CENTER OF PATIENT CARE

Not your typical proposal When the opportunity first surfaced to support the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion Campaign, Don approached his partners with a slightly unusual proposal: combine their efforts in philanthropy — as well as business — and name a space together in the newly constructed building.

“I immediately was on board,” says Neal. “My family has a strong connection to the Beth Israel Deaconess system and my wife, Debbie, is involved on the Board of Overseers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Giving the local community the opportunity to have the same level of cancer care and surgery as you would in Boston — that’s game changing.”

Cofounder and principal Lewis Heafitz was also eager to jump on board. “It feels good to be doing this as a team and giving back to the community where we all work and live.”

When asked why they chose to name the waiting room, Don Levine says, “I’ve lived in the community for over 50 years now. We’ve waited a long time for something like this. We feel like it’s our responsibility to help the hospital grow and be there for the next generation.”

Bruce seconds that sentiment: “Bringing world-class care to the neighborhood is good for the community, and it’s good for business. As people move farther out into the suburbs, they want to have the same level of care — and now we do.”

BRINGING RADIATION ONCOLOGY INTO THE LIGHT

The addition of these two state-of-the art operating rooms gives the team in Needham the best resources to care for patients.

When designing the BID Cancer Center in Needham, the Department of Radiation Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center wanted to make the patient experience the best it could be. “We made this a priority to take radiation oncology out of the basement and design a space where patients can receive treatments surrounded by natural light, beauty, art and healing gardens,” says Jayne Carvelli-Sheehan, RN, MSN, Senior Vice President, Ambulatory and Emergency Services. The Chief of the Department, Mary Ann Stevenson, MD, PhD, along with Radiation Oncology Site Director Stuart Berman, MD, joined with members of the BIDMC Department of Radiation Oncology to make a six-figure gift and sponsor all of the artwork as well as the design of the healing garden in the new center. Extending state-of-the-art care into Needham Dr. Justin Kung

Justin Kung, MD, is a man with a mission: grow the Radiology Department at BID–Needham by leveraging all the strengths of the larger Beth Israel Deaconess network.

Kung, a self-proclaimed “BID lifer” and newly appointed Director of Radiology Network Integration, has been an essential part of making this vision a reality. In his new position, he is working to build upon BID–Needham’s imaging capabilities, which will result in more opportunities for residents of Needham and the surrounding communities to receive care locally.

Advanced imaging close to home Twenty-first-century imaging services are no longer exclusive to large, academic medical centers. The radiology services already offered at BID–Needham, which include nuclear medicine, CT scans, MRI, mammography and radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations, exemplify the quality and breadth that can be offered at the community level. Kung says that as it grows, BID–Needham’s Department of Radiology will serve as an extension of the larger BID system, allowing patients to take advantage of the state-of-the-art imaging services — and experts — they’d find in Boston.

“The great thing about our team of specialists in Needham is that it’s the same team of people who work downtown (in Boston),” he says. “Needham is home to many of our radiologists, so being able to work in their community hospital gives them a real sense of pride. And patients can be assured that they’re getting the same level of care they’d receive at BIDMC.” Supporting the changing role of community health care, The Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at BIDMC Department of Radiology has been instrumental in supporting BID–Needham’s growth. Case in point: during the most recent capital campaign, the department made a major gift to support the BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion Campaign. Kung says that new facilities like the BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion and the soon-to-open BreastCare Center underscore a commitment to Needham and to the changing role of community health care.

The new BreastCare Center at BID–Needham is a unified area where all the imaging equipment needed to care for a patient — from 3D mammography, to ultrasound to MRI — is in close proximity to one reading room.

Hope abounds When it comes to bringing comfort and care to cancer patients, “giving hope” should be the Mayer family motto.

When Bob and Carol Mayer learned about plans for the new BreastCare Center at BID–Needham, they were the first to lend their support — with a generous donation from the Helen and Leo Mayer Family Charitable Trust, a fund started by Bob’s father.

“Our family, like so many, has been touched by cancer,” says Carol. “By bringing the latest breast-imaging technology to the area, BID–Needham will help detect cancers early and offer countless patients a better chance at survival.” It’s a sentiment shared by the entire Mayer family. “When we heard about the new Center, we knew our family had to be a part of it,” said Bob. Carol and Bob’s son, Don, agrees: “We listened to the hospital’s initial ideas for the Center — about the integrated clinic and more privacy for patients and families — and that was something that hit home for us.”

Turning dreams into reality As a cancer survivor, Carol knows firsthand about the daily struggles patients face on their long journey to recovery. During her treatment, she dreamed of having a place where cancer patients could shop for products designed for their specific needs. Carol and Bob turned that dream into a reality by founding Windows of Hope, a shop located in the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Windows of Hope just celebrated its 16th anniversary.

The Mayer’s vision for enhanced care didn’t stop at the intersection of Longwood and Brookline. In 2014, the family realized its vision of contributing to comprehensive cancer care in their community by funding a Windows of Hope shop in Needham.

“It’s thrilling to see the shop expand to Needham,” says Carol. “The patients appreciate having a fun and upbeat environment with caring and compassionate staff that help patients select things like wigs and prostheses. It makes a huge difference.”

A family affair Carol, who has also volunteered for more than 20 years at “Patient-to-Patient, Heart-to-Heart,”— a BIDMC program that pairs survivors with patients — has passed her generous spirit on to her daughter, Judy Kaufman. Judy began volunteering with Carol at BIDMC in Boston and ran with Team BID–Needham at this year’s Falmouth Road Race, raising money for the new BreastCare Center.

“We’re trying to help ease the burden for patients by supporting causes that make cancer treatment more accessible and comfortable,” Judy says, “I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Visit Windows of Hope Stop by the Windows of Hope shop, located on the Ground Floor of the Lank Cancer Center in Needham, where cancer patients — men and women — meet and shop with trained, supportive staff. Open to all, the shop features stylish jewelry, scarves and hats, as well as wigs, prosthetics and support books.

“In fiscal year 2012, we started out on a five-year campaign to raise $6 million. We not only realized our goal, we shattered it. One year early, with your generosity, we raised $7.8 million from over 1,000 donors. Since opening the BID Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion in 2014, patients in the community have benefitted from over 7,000 surgical cases, nearly 12,000 radiation treatments, over 6,000 hematology/oncology visits and over 6,000 infusions.

Roger Marino is a lifelong resident of greater Boston and a cofounder of EMC, the nation’s largest data storage company. Roger’s rich legacy includes producing Gypsy on Broadway and launching his own movie production company, Revere Pictures. Roger chose to make a large gift to the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion Campaign — naming a waiting area on the ground floor — as a way to show his deep commitment to health care in Needham.

“I moved to Dedham about 10 years ago, and began going to BID–Needham around the same time. I came to the hospital for a heart analysis, and the care I received was second to none. Over the years, I have continued to receive exceptional care and have come to understand the benefit of having this type of world-class service just down the road… I’m getting older, so dependable health care is a great benefit to me.”

“I grew up in Revere and have witnessed how much greater Boston has changed. I’ve seen the city expand into the suburbs. That expansion makes institutions like
