EDITORIAL July is an important month for our Charity! It is the month we celebrate our anniversary and this means there is a party. This year was no exception. We have been living exceptionally hard times this year. . . Each week we spend over 600 kg of food, 20 liters of cleaning products (for washing the kennels), 140 trash bags (50 and 100 litres of capacity), 20 kitchen paper rolls, 5 clothes’ detergent packages, 4 wet baby towel packs, 10 cat litter bags. . . The veterinary bills are heavy! Help us to help. Read more inside this edition.

DID YOU KNOW. . . Now it is easier to foster one of Bianca’s animals? Just fill the fostering form online and that’s it! Improve the quality of life of one of our animals. Check the complete list here: http://bianca.pt/english/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=48&Itemi d=110 and fill this form: http://bianca.pt/forms/index.html. Thank you for your help.

TIPS It is midsummer already and it is never too much to remind everyone that we should not let our dogs inside the car, not even for just a few minutes. In hot days a closed car becomes a real sauna and it kills fast. Animals do not feel the heat the same way we do so we should be extra careful. Inside the car the temperature may triplicate! Take your dog with you and avoid any tragedy.

WE WERE ABANDONED... Bianca was formed 10 years ago and (unfortunately) we know by heart all the excuses people come up with to give their animals: health problems, job transfers, new houses, divorces, etc. But in fact, for those who love animals, there is no reason in the world that could lead them to abandon their animal. Our shelter is not the perfect home for any animal. We bring them to the shelter (hopefully) temporarily, give them a safe place to heal and be cared for, while trying to promote a responsible adoption for each and every animal. A responsible adoption because, if someone lacks the conditions to adopt, they shouldn’t do it. The animal may become stressed, psychologically damaged and his future life may be impaired. If you want to join our cause, you may visit us on Saturdays and ďŹ nd out more about us and our work. All help is welcome. If you can and want to adopt, please send an email to sesimbra.bianca@gmail.com. If you cannot adopt but want to help, know that you may sponsor. This way you will be providing an extra welfare to an animal. Know more at http://bianca.pt/english or send us an email.

IN MEMORY. . . Xica Xica was found in a very bad condition and without reaction. She went straight to the vet but unfortunately we could not saved her. She had leishmaniasis, mange, tick fever, dirofilariasis. . . Her kidneys stopped working and this sweet poor little girl was speared to a greater suffering. . .

Moura Moura seemed to being recovery well until some health complications arose. Her age didn’t help her condition. Eventually she died at the vet. . .

FEATURED ANIMAL COVER ISSUE P O U PA S Poupas is a very sweet and sociable four legged friend. He was adopted 3 years ago and has recently been returned to our shelter. . . Poupas arrived with excessive weight and is

very needy. He has already been in 3 different families. . . poor guy. Give him a new chance and adopt him!!

SPECIAL ADOPTION NYNA Nyna is a very sweet and loving dog. Unfortunately she suffers from leishmaniasis which has brought her some additional complications. Until the disease was properly diagnosed she suffered from a bowel inflammation that weakened her very much. Meanwhile she made the proper leishmaniasis treatment and recovered very well. We remind you that an animal with this condition may live many healthy years with only a minor daily treatment.

REMEMBER ME? This issue featured news from adopted dogs. This month is about Carolina. “On the 4th of November I went to pick Carolina at Bianca’s shelter to be her temporary foster family but rapidly I realised she was very special and I could not let her go so I adopted her. She is epileptic and deaf and has to take a daily medication. She is a special girl but we and her brothers Rufe, Stela and Rato would not trade her for the world. It has been a surprise and joy to see her resistance to the disease and how she is a very happy dog with us. In one of the photos Carolina is sleeping with Rato (her favourite brother) that has joined the family last year. Kisses, Cláudia.”

HOT STUFF The website http://www.handmade2help.dawanda.com was created by our friend Dominique to help our animals. In this website you can find amazing handmade articles. They are irresistible and only ones. Give a look! http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com

I’M VOLUNTEER John I am John Sexton, an expat American and Dutch, now living in Portugal. I see conditions improving some with less groups of dogs roaming the street (now it is more individual dogs you see), people out walking their dogs (this is something new from the last few years) and more people reacting favorably towards the dogs they do see. That said, I still see a surprising number of dogs on short chains with little to no room to move, being kept as a cheap alarm system. . . When we moved here, our own dog was left behind for a few months while we settled. To continue to be around animals and get out daily puppy licks and hugs, we looked for a way to become involved with some sort of dog shelter/rescue. Bianca fit our needs then and now. It is satisfying when you can help a dog(s) to have a better life. The conditions vary greatly depending on both the area and the culture of the people who own the animals. As an example, dog fighting is still legal in some states. . . Educate the younger generation in how to deal with animals, what their basic needs are, how to spot abusive situations, how to educate others about dealing with animals and how to pressure others into adjusting their attitudes towards animals and how they should be treated. Even if you only have one free weekend a month, get out and walk a dog from the shelter. It will make a difference in you and in the dog.

I FOUND A HOME. . . It is always a great joy to see an animal being adopted. An adoption should always be a conscientious, well though and voluntary act. And that is why at Bianca all adoptions are carefully considered. This way we try to assure that the animals are in good hands, that they will have a family for their entire lifes and will be loved, cherished and respected as a member of the family that feels, reacts and suers like all of us. And even with all this some animals are still returned. Remember, if you cannot adopt there are other possibilities for you, like sponsoring. In this case, you are actually helping without taking the animal into your home. You may walk your sponsored animal, take him to the vet, etc. They thank that! Go to http://bianca.pt/english or send an email to sesimbra.bianca@gmail.com and ďŹ nd out more about it. If you send us photos we will publish them on our website and social networks. NEWS of the MONTH S o l i d a ry C A I The project CAI solidário in collaboration with Bianca Charity held a little stall at this school year closing party of Castelo Basic School. They sold some of the items produced at the art workshops of CAI and the school and there was also a mini book fair for the sale os secondhand books. The goal was to raise funds for Bianca and all proceeds were used to acquire products lacking at the shelter. These products were delivered to us during CAI’s weekly visit.

Pic-nic On June 22nd, Bianca Charity was present at the pic-nic in Tomar (Portugal) with a stall with items from the volunteers’ bazaar. Bianca is a regular presence at this event and we hope to have the chance of attending it in future years. It is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, raise funds, spread the word about Bianca and of course, have a little fun too. All proceeds went to Bianca, as usual. Thank you so much to all who made it possible and specially to the organization for the invitation.
