President’s Message

SANDRA EVERS-MANLY

On behalf of the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center, I am pleased to welcome you to our 30th annual S.E. Manly Short Film Festival here at the Regal L.A. Live. Your support continues to empower our filmmakers to continue telling their stories, knowing their community will show up for them. What once began as a small four hour program has blossomed into an eventful four days of moving films and insightful conversations. For three decades, the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) has been fortunate to uplift, amplify, and strengthen black filmmakers whose voices are desperately needed. It is through the gaze of these incredible films that we get to experience yet another hopeful weekend of laughter, thrill, catharsis, and connection.

We thank and congratulate these artists for offering up their artistic take on topics and subjects that are so vital to them. Their craft and pursuit of excellence is bound to jump right off the screen and resonate deeply in our hearts. We are proud to showcase these films that address an array of some of the most critical issues facing our community and our country. We also look forward to hearing leading professionals about their craft, their journey, and their purpose for telling the stories they tell. By participating and sharing their work in our annual festival, this new class will continue in the footsteps of outstanding past participants such as Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), Ava DuVernay (Selma), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Numa Perrier (The Perfect Find) Dee Rees (Mudbound), Kasi Lemmons (Harriet), as well as a slew of others who have gone on to lead forceful careers in Hollywood.

Over time our images have been overlooked and portrayed in some of the most demeaning ways. Dangerous myths and deadly misconceptions have been our portion. However, our goal at BHERC has always been to make sure the images of African Americans in film and television will be preserved and depicted with dignity, truth, and humanity. I am so excited for everyone to see this program of roughly 60 films curated specifically to dignify and humanize our stories.

In addition to these blocks of films running Saturday and Sunday, we will have three feature screenings. Veils: Requiem for Trayvon follows the all-too-familiar story of a young boy murdered by a “neighborhood watchman” and the reverberations of his mother’s grief. Brief Tender Light is a documentary feature tracking the nuanced journeys of three African engineering students as they forge their ways through Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The final premiere will be a screening of Tolliver’s Barbershop: a documentary feature about an incomparable presence in Los Angeles, Lawrence Tolliver, and the legacy

of his barbershop and its glorious effect on the community at large. We look forward to experiencing these three incredible works, alongside you.

As we illuminate the work of our emerging filmmakers, we will also pay homage to a distinguished group of people who have been laboring in their respective fields for quite some time and have made a long lasting impact: actress, producer, and writer Deborah Pratt; film key art designer Art Sims; journalist and PACE News founder Gloria Zuurveen; photojournalist D. Stevens; dancer and actress Gina Lem-you Davis; showrunner and producer Janine Sherman Barrois; and film animation artist Lyndon J. Barrois. They have each contributed to the great success of various projects and inspired countless people along the way. They have each ceaselessly committed their lives to the advancement of our images and stories. In deep gratitude, we wholeheartedly salute the legacy and influence of these profound individuals.

Our opening night ceremony will be hosted by the phenomenally talented and supportive William Allen Young who has been with us from the start. This festival would have never been possible without several critical people who gave their hearts, energy, and time. Their belief in BHERC and its mission has been my guiding light. Thank you to Reyna Gaar who gave so much of her time and talent to the beginning of BHERC and the festival. To Mr. David Massey for planting the seed as well as inaugural team members BJ McCrudy, Ray Forchion and former festival director Ralph Scott. To John Forbes, Stephene Johnson, Billie Green, Rob McCune, and our selection committee, I cannot express my gratitude for you all and the work you’ve each have done to push this organization and its mission to great heights. Additionally, we thank partners and sponsors for your continued support. Your investment has made it wholly possible for BHERC to remain a fierce advocate for our filmmakers.

In the midst of great tension and heartbreak, one does not have the luxury of silently waiting. This year has offered up a divisive presidential election, a catastrophic Southeastern earthquake, fallen heroes, and a declining economy, among much more. But let us not bypass the great joys that we have experienced, both personally and collectively. Hateful rhetoric and erasure will never be enough to deter us, and the artists of our time, from our collective mission of unity and peace.

Through the lens of these films, let us remember just how expansive we can be. In the words of the brilliant Toni Morrison, “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.” We at BHERC not only thank these artists for going to work and choosing to make art despite the challenges that have risen, but we also thank you, our patrons, who have also gone to work by choosing to support and experience their truths.

Let us open our eyes, lean in together, and experience a weekend filled with abundant, dynamic stories!

Award of Achievement

ART SIMS

Motion Picture Key Art Design

Art Sims is a graphic designer and art director based in Los Angeles. Hailing from Detroit, Sims is well known for his poster designs for classic and iconic films such as The Color Purple, Malcolm X, School Daze, Love and Basketball, New Jack City, Do The Right Thing, I Am Legend, Get On The Bus, Crooklyn, Dreamgirls, The Secret Life of Bees, The Best Man, If God Is Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise, Black Panther and many more.

Sims’s career started modestly, with the “Draw Me” test featured in magazines and on TV back in the 1950s and ‘60s designed to uncover artistic talent. Sims had it. His mother, a grade-school teacher, nurtured his creativity, guiding him through school and instilling a love of learning. Sims started winning awards for his artwork in elementary school, then attended Cass Tech, where his curriculum was dedicated to the arts. He excelled and earned a scholarship to Michigan State University.

Currently, he is the CEO and co-founder of 11:24 Design Advertising in Los Angeles. 11:24 refers to a particular chapter in the New Testament, Mark chapter 11, verse 24. Sims asserts “When I got to LA, I had strong Christian ethics, and I was searching for something spiritual, a purpose. I was intrigued by the spirituality of Earth, Wind and Fire, and I wanted a name that would bring all of this together. I knew there were other ad agencies, but I was trying to be more creative, more artistic; I was trying to make images people hadn’t seen before. I needed a name that would capture all that.”

Throughout his career, Sims has committed to promoting and making visible African-American art and culture. A great portion of his work is currently part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the National Mall.

Sims has earned a plethora of awards and was featured in the book and exhibition: “Close Up in Black: African American Film Posters”. In addition to teaching design, Art still aims to create images for and about African Americans with the ultimate goal of reshaping history to show our true beauty. With great plans of never letting up on his art, he cites “If I’m on this earth, I’m going to be doing something expressive, or creative, and I’m going to be giving back. You won’t see Art Sims lying on the beach with a mint julep, pondering his life. There’s too much to do.”

Lifetime Achievement Award

Gina Lem-you Davis has led, and continues to lead a fulfilling life. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA in 1937, the only child of an African American father and Chinese immigrant mother, her inherent cultural knowledge has been the ground on which she has stood for decades. She discovered her passion for dance at an early age and began professionally at the Lester Horton Dance Company, studying alongside greats such as Alvin Ailey. In her high school years, Gina’s mother entered her in a local beauty contest where she caught the eye of professional photographer Howard Moorehead. This pageant would be the beginning of professional relationship between Gina and Howard as she began gracing the covers of monumental magazine publications like JET, Hue, and Ebony over a dozen times.

Once professional print and acting work began to take off for Gina in her teens, she transferred from Los Angeles High to Hollywood Professional School. As if the woes of the 1950’s were not enough, she found that her racial identity would also prove to be an unfortunate barrier. Stuck on the divide of two different cultures, she was forced to make decisions at an early age that led to deep feelings of resentment and erasure. After a fellow white classmate discovered her cover of Ebony magazine and “outed” her as a Negro, she was asked by the high school’s’ administration to keep quiet about it to maintain her enrollment. Gina vehemently refused, went straight to her locker, and went home never to return. She transferred back to L.A High and continued to thrive in entertainment as years progressed.

At 21, Gina booked her first major film role in the 1958 classic, South Pacific, the Rodgers & Hammerstein inspired romantic musical set in Hawaii. On set, her skin was darkened to make her look more native, adding another ethnic barrier to Gina’s mind that would also have to reckon with.

Following this stint, she went on to dance in another Rodgers & Hammerstein classic, Flower Drum Song, and was featured front and center in the major dance number with undeniable rhythm.

After some time, she blazed a path to Las Vegas where she became the only African American woman to join the Kingo Sun Imperial Japanese dance company. She was asked to lighten her skin to appear more Japanese, continuing the tradition of concealing herself. Eventually, the legendary Sammie Davis Jr. was blown away watching her talent and enlisted her to join him on his upcoming world tour.

During a brief hiatus in 1963, Gina met and married LA Dodgers prime player Willie Davis. Following their nuptials, she devoted her life to raising their three children as well as her faith. A decade later, she was given the opportunity to put her gift of choreography on display when she joined a Buddhist organization, promoting world peace by putting on grand events and shows.

A true conduit for human connection, Gina held and choreographed shows all over Los Angeles and Hawaii at major venues, a few being the Dodger Stadium and the Shrine Auditorium.

The layered life and legacy of Gina Lem-you Davis is nothing short of an incredible Marvel. A phenomenally talented woman who sits at the intersection of two distinct peoples, forced to erase her humanity, but somehow managed to persist and thrive. Even after her artistic career had reached its last page, she still found purpose and pursued it relentlessly. In 1984, Gina became a licensed realtor helping people achieve the great privilege of home ownership. She recently retired at the ripe age of 86 and continues to serve as a beacon of light and wisdom for all those around her. When she isn’t inspiring others or spending time with her grandchildren or great-grandchildren, you can find her in her home art studio, pen to pad, sketching magnificent portraits.

Photojournalist and Filmmaker

The photographs created by prominent photojournalist D

Stevens have taken him around the world many times over: from war-torn Beirut to the tension-filled streets of Belfast to the drought-plagued faces of Haiti. His Leica cameras have captured the juxtaposing moments of birth of a ‘crack baby’ in a South Los Angeles hospital, down to the masked faces of KKK members during a cross burning.

Stevens was raised in Compton, California and educated at UCLA and Columbia Graduate School of Journalism-Television Institute. He has lived for seven years in London and three years in New York. Since 1990 he has been commuting between Paris and Santa Monica, California.

For three decades, Stevens’ powerful imagery has propelled him to expand boundaries as a communicator, documenting indicators of our times. Inspired by W. Eugene Smith, Margaret Bourke-White, Lewis Hines, Cartier-Bresson and many others, Stevens has dedicated his life to bringing reflections of honesty in the human spirit.

As a photojournalist, he feels honored to have been exhibited with the likes of Bernice Abott, Walker Evans, Dorthea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz and Gordon Parks and represented by the G Ray Hawkins Gallery. For news assignments Stevens is represented by both ZUMA Press (US) and SIPA Press (Paris). His work has garnered international recognitions and awards including the Foreign Press Club for Newsweek International coverage in Belfast and Images of the Year Selection for the Time Magazine cover story entitled ‘Kids Who Sell Crack.’

In 2000, he was asked to illustrate the book ‘Prison Life’ written by Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams and Barbara Becnel. Mr. Williams, co-founder of the Crips gang, was nominated for the Nobel Peace

Prize in 2001 largely because his book has deterred thousands of youths from following his gangster lifestyle. Mr. Williams was executed at San Quentin on December 13 2005.

As a advertising key art photographer, Stevens has photographed over forty movie posters. His clients include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, HBO, New Line Cinema, Disney, 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Miramax, CIBY 2000, etc. He has been a unit stills photographer on over twenty five feature films since his first movie “Boyz N The Hood” in 1991. Others have included “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”, “Menace II Society”, “White Men Can’t Jump”, “Devil In A Blue Dress”, “Tuskegee Airmen”, “Truman”, “Set It Off”, “Biker Boyz”, etc.

Stevens received the prestigious Hollywood Reporter “Key Art Award” as photographer for the Best Drama Poster 2001 for “Love and Basketball”. He received ABET’s (Alliance of Black Entertainment Technicians) ‘Pioneer Trophy’ in 2000 and has won the Southern California News Directors ‘Golden Mike’ Trophy for a documentary he produced on Soledad Prison.

Stevens has received numerous recognitions from professional societies and official congratulations from local and state government as well from the U.S. Senate. Numerous articles, interviews and mini-documentaries have been done on Stevens’ work. He has been exhibited in well over two hundred galleries around the world.. He has been a member of National Press Photographers Association, Overseas Press Club, Society of Professional Journalist, ASMP, IATSE, and Editorial Photographers.

Stevens has directed numerous documentaries and his first feature film was released in December 2006 entitled “The Pet”. He is a contributing photographer to ZUMA Press Agency. In 2007 he was part of the exhibit “Intersections” at the California Afro American Museum. Stevens’ work has been exhibited worldwide well over two hundred times. He has had numerous oneman shows including Paris, France and at the Cannes Film Festival sponsored in part by Leica USA.He was part of the book and world exhibition project by Time-Warner - SITES (Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service). entitled “Songs of My People”.

He is presently developing Delta Blues Soul - a historical feature movie and book project about the blues in addition to scriptwriting and directing a comedy about exercise in American entitled SLAVERSIZE. There is a definite theme in projects undertaken by Stevens that relate to the history and implications of human interactions and the power exchange between those with power and those who may not realize how that dynamics affects them in a myriad of different scenarios.

D’Angelo “D’Lo” Louis:

D’Angelo “D’Lo” Louis began crafting a narrative that in hindsight some might consider extraordinary. His story is rooted deeply in the very real streets of the Bay Area and is a testament to the power of resilience and the magic of storytelling. Richmond, California shaped the early chapters of his life and were written with some hardship. Raised by his mother and great-grandmother, D’Lo understood early on the values of hard work and accountability. In 2011, urgency turned to greed, a misstep that led him to the confines of California’s correctional system. D’Lo was sentenced to 10 years. Within those walls, metamorphosis began. He was released in August of 2018. Five months out of prison, a filmmaker friend offered D’Lo an entry into the world of cinema, juggling roles as both a director’s and producer’s assistant. D’Lo would eventually create projects of his own. Once an inmate, he didn’t let that label define

him; instead, he used it to highlight the shared themes of redemption and hope. His journey of twists and turns, serves as a reminder that every individual has a story worth telling, and that within adversity lies the seed of unparalleled artistry.
