Fight to Walk:

Inspiration on the Court

BY HEATHER JONES SKAGGS PHOTO BY MOLLY SMITH When 9-year-old Shep Maddox steps onto the court with the Birmingham Squadron, he isn’t just a fan getting a special moment. He’s the team’s 11th man — a role that symbolizes resilience, community, and the power of sports to lift spirits far beyond the scoreboard.

Born at 30 weeks and 3 days after a harrowing pregnancy complicated by PPROM, a condition that gave him only a 50–50 chance of survival, Shep has defied expectations from his first breath. His parents, Kati and Richard Maddox, spent weeks in limbo, unsure whether their son would arrive within days or make it closer to term.

After Shep’s birth, he spent a month in the neonatal intensive care unit. Although he appeared healthy, his parents noticed at six months that he wasn’t sitting up on his own, leading to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and a journey of therapy, surgeries, and hard work.

“We wondered if he would survive and if he would ever walk,” Kati said. “Seeing where he is now is a miracle.”

A partner in the fight Much of Shep’s progress has been influenced by the care he received at Children’s of Alabama and through United Ability.

At age 3, he underwent a selective dorsal rhizotomy, a surgery that helped reduce spasticity in his legs. The procedure allowed him to move from using a gait trainer to walking independently.

At age 8, Shep faced another major challenge: orthopedic surgery that included bilateral femoral derotation and several procedures on his weaker right leg — hamstring release, knee

“These surgeries were tough but have been life-changing,” Kati said. “Shep now walks with more independence, has much more stamina, and enjoys activities like theme parks, the beach, and trick-or-treating in our community without assistance.”

Children’s of Alabama has walked alongside families like the Maddoxes for years.

The hospital also plays a key role in a unique program with the Birmingham Squadron, the NBA G League affiliate in the city.

“Children’s of Alabama has been a partner of the Birmingham Squadron for the last four years,” said Sydney Boyer of the Birmingham Squadron. “With both parties being devoted to community outreach, engagement, and giving back, the decision was easy to establish a way to tie both organizations together through the 11th Man program.”

Becoming the 11th man The Birmingham Squadron works with Children’s of Alabama to identify one patient each season who would benefit most from being named the team’s 11th man. The child’s medical needs, care plan, and availability are all considered.

Once chosen, the 11th man becomes part of the team’s inner circle — with access to media day, practices, games, and behind-the-scenes moments usually reserved for players and staff.

For the 2025 - 2026 season, that extra man is Bluff Park’s own Shep Maddox.

“Shep is a very special young man,” Boyer said. “He has come far in his journey, and his drive and passion to keep going made him the best candidate for the position. Shep loves basketball and the Birmingham Squadron.”

“My favorite part is getting to warm up with them and shooting with the guys. I even got my own locker,” Shep said.

All the players have a picture and a locker, and so does Shep, which he thinks is pretty cool. “I think he also really likes bringing his buddies with him to the games,” Kati said. “We get 4 tickets to every game, and so we either go as a family or we invite buddies, and that’s always a lot of fun.”

For the team, the 11th Man program is about much more than a ceremonial title.

“The 11th Man program exposes Birmingham Squadron players to a cause larger than basketball,” Boyer said. “Players get to pour into special individuals who are battling unimaginable challenges, and they use the inspiration from the child’s fight to be the best they can be — on and off the court.”

Finding purpose beyond physical therapy For Shep and his parents, the timing of the honor felt providential.

“Being chosen as the Squadron’s 11th man has been an incredible blessing for our family and came at the perfect time,” Kati said. “Shep’s physical therapists were encouraging him to find something beyond his regular PT, and becoming part of the Squadron gives him both a purpose and a place to grow.”

More than a basketball team Since joining the Squadron family, Shep has been treated like one of their own. The team has given him jerseys, invited him to design his own, set up a locker for him, and welcomed him at practices and home games.

“The way the team and coaches have embraced him … has meant the world to us,” Kati said. “The experiences they’ve already given him, from NBA floor seats to the Pelicans vs. Rockets, to meeting some of his favorite players, and having him introduced on the jumbotron at the Pelicans/Rockets game… have made him feel celebrated and supported.”

For the Birmingham Squadron organization, that sense of connection is intentional.

Shep is a big basketball fan. His introduction to the team began at the Lakeshore Foundation, where he attended a meet-and-greet and photo shoot with players and coaches. There, Shep passed alley-oops to the players, who finished with dunks that lit up his face.

“The 11th Man program gives the Birmingham Squadron another way to give back to the community in a meaningful and impactful way,” Boyer said.

“It is a Squadron goal to be more to this city than just a professional basketball team that plays 24 home games at Legacy Arena at the BJCC.”

“That made him smile so big,” Kati said.

At Lakeshore, Shep also had the chance to explore adaptive sports, including wheelchair basketball. The experience reignited his excitement about playing the

A story bigger than basketball For Kati, Shep’s role with the Squadron is another chapter in a story she believes God has been writing from the beginning.

“What inspires me most about Shep is truly hard to put into words,” she said.

“From the very beginning, when we were unsure if he would even make it into the world, God spared him and has shown His goodness through Shep’s life over and over again.”

She has watched her son endure surgeries, pain and exhausting therapy sessions. On the toughest days, when both mother and son felt worn down, Shep kept going.

“He has endured surgeries, pain, and countless hours of hard physical therapy, and even on the toughest days when both of us felt worn down, he kept pushing forward with determination, courage, and that sweet smile God gave him,” she said. “His perseverance reminds me every day that God has a plan for his life.”

“Shep tackles a very hard road with so much heart, and I am continually inspired by his resilience, his faith and his willingness to keep fighting,” she added. “I can’t wait to see all that he will accomplish as he grows stronger, because his story is already such a powerful testimony.”

Inspiring other families The Maddox family hopes Shep’s partnership with the Squadron offers hope and encouragement to other families facing challenges. “We want them to see that hard times can lead to breakthroughs,” said Kati.

Shep’s motto, “You can do hard things,” reminds families that progress in medical battles can be slow and difficult, but meaningful. Their prayer is that families feel inspired to keep believing and trusting that their child’s story is still being written. If Shep’s journey encourages even one family, it means everything to them.

A message to fans As Shep settles into his new role, his family has a simple message for Birmingham Squadron fans.

To all the Squadron fans, we’re grateful for this opportunity,” Kati said. “Shep is excited to step into this role, and we look forward to seeing his smile at home games and on the jumbotron.

Being part of the team means everything to him, and we hope his journey inspires others with joy, perseverance, and gratitude,” she added. “Thank you for welcoming him warmly — we’re excited for him and pray he inspires many.”

In the coming months, Shep will continue attending practices, visiting the locker room, and cheering from the sidelines. To players, coaches, and fans, he’ll be more than a symbol of courage — he’ll be a teammate.

For Shep, who once faced an uncertain future, every step onto the court shows how far he’s come and how far he still plans to go.

• For younger children (ages 2–5), the design includes shorter slides, gentle ramps, lower-to-the-ground interactive structures, and easy-access climbers. These features allow younger children to explore, play safely, and develop balance, coordination, and early motor skills while still feeling adventurous.

• A key strength of this design is its full ADA ramp access, supporting children who use mobility devices and allowing them to access the elevated play areas without needing to transfer. For those who can transfer from a wheelchair or mobility device, the playground offers features like the sensory wave climber transfer point and the zip slide, providing inclusive fun and physical engagement for children with different abilities.

Business Chat: USA Martial Arts Bluff Park Dojo

Meet the Owner - Keith McConkey Q: What inspired you to venture into the world of martial arts, and what inspires you to keep practicing and teaching it?

A: My father originally inspired me to venture into martial arts. He had trained as a young man and greatly benefitted from the discipline and skills he learned. Seeing the positive impact it had on his life motivated me to follow in his footsteps. What keeps me going today is witnessing the transformation in my students. Seeing their confidence grow and their lives improve both on and off the mat is incredibly rewarding.

Q: Give us a bit of history about USA Martial Arts— who, why, when, and where it all began.

A: USA Martial Arts has been a cornerstone of the Bluff Park community since the early 1980s. Originally established as Bluff Park Taekwondo, the school was founded by Van and Pam Bushnell. Following his service in the U.S. Navy and return from Vietnam, Mr. Bushnell began teaching martial arts to his son and a small group of eager students.

As interest grew, classes moved to the Dance Center operated

by Francis Armstrong. When Mrs. Armstrong retired, the Bushnells chose to preserve the center’s unique learning environment by transforming the space at 645 Shades Crest Road into a dedicated martial arts campus.

After more than three decades of teaching and community service, the Bushnells entrusted me with carrying forward their longstanding legacy of martial arts instruction in Bluff Park.

Q: How does USA Martial Arts incorporate local organizations, events, or community traditions into its programming?

A: We actively partner with local schools and businesses to provide self-defense and martial arts education. These collaborations allow us to share the benefits of martial arts beyond our dojo and strengthen ties within the community.

Q: Can you share a story about a local connection you’ve made through the dojo?

A: I’ve been fortunate to form countless connections in Bluff Park through the dojo. Many of my closest friendships and relationships have grown out of this shared passion for martial arts. It’s truly a community within a community.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being in the business of martial arts?

A: The most fulfilling part of being a martial arts instructor is working with both children and adults and watching their lives improve – not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Seeing students gain confidence, discipline, and resilience is what makes this work so meaningful.

Q: How do you see USA Martial Arts evolving in the next few years, and what are your dreams for the future?

A: The future looks bright for USA Martial Arts. Following the tradition of passing the school down to a senior student, I plan to entrust it to one of my students who has been training with us for over 14 years. We’re also exploring ways to serve the community beyond martial arts classes. One idea is to create a community garden as a form of therapy and connection for Bluff Park residents. The garden would feature flowers, fresh vegetables, and a space for relaxation.

Q: What does being part of the Bluff Park community mean to you, and how does it influence your approach to business?

A: Being part of Bluff Park means everything to me. This community has given me the most fulfilling career I could imagine. It’s my family, my purpose, and my motivation to be the best person I can be so I can better serve others. Our school reflects that appreciation by striving to create a supportive, encouraging atmosphere where students and families feel proud to belong.

Mr. P’s more than a butcher shop—it’s a family legacy Charles Pilleteri, “Mr. P.” was always destined to be an entrepreneur and owner of a deli and a quality butcher shop.

He just came upon it, honestly, because his grandfather, Charles Pilleteri, Sr., who he was named after, opened his grocery store, Supreme Super Market, in 1934 on the corner of 4th Street and 2nd Avenue North in Elyton, Alabama. His sons, Joe and Lee, worked in the store and later purchased it from their father.

Joe’s son, Charles, worked in the store, too, watching his grandfather, his father, and Uncle Lee run the business.

By helping them, he learned valuable lessons about the company, customers, their food needs, and how best to serve them and gain their loyalty.

Charles lived in West End on 4th Avenue West, near Legion Field, with his father, his mother, Frances, his brother, Jake, and his sisters, Grace and Bernice. He attended John Carroll High School and, in 1969, joined the Army Reserves. Later, he attended UAB, where he earned a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing.

“During my sophomore year in college, 1970, my late wife, Carol, and I were married,” Pilleteri said. “It was really a busy time. I remember working every morning at Dad’s store, and then taking three classes a day until 10 p.m. Each day was really long.”

“Upon graduation, I went to work for Purex Corporation as a manufacturer’s rep. My territory was half the state of Alabama, and I was responsible for ensuring that Purex products were always “on the shelves” in my assigned territory.”

“After a few years, I asked my boss for a raise, and he told me that, to get one, I’d have to move to Tennessee.

Well, I didn’t want to do that, so I decided that it was time to get back into the grocery and meat business, like my father, uncle, and grandfather,” said Pilleteri.

“I told my Dad that I wanted to open a store “over the mountain” not long after that conversation. I saw an ad 20

Through the Lens with George Elliott for a store building for rent in McAlister Shopping Center. It was an old U-tote-m store that was moving.

It was in a tiny strip mall on top of the mountain in Bluff Park in the Hoover area.

“My father and mother loaned my brother, Jake, and me $28,000, and, in 1975, we rented the property. I was 25, and Jake was 21. We called it Mr. P’s Butcher and Deli. My late wife, Carol, helped when she could, and my cousin Tommy Vacarella helped after school.

“It wasn’t easy. The store was only half-stocked, and we had a lot of used equipment that was prone to breaking down, as well as a leaking roof. I remember we really had to work for little pay.”

“After about ten years, we were still having a hard time making a profit. Jake left the business and went to work at WBRC-6, in sales. Three years later, he tragically died of a brain tumor.”

“So, then, it was just Carol, helping me when she could. My son, Chris, was 15. helped me and some other high school kids. My sister, Bernice, helped when she was in college. We tried a lot of different things to please our customers.’

“One thing we did was to start making homemade Italian sausage in our store. Usually, sausage was only made during the cold months, but we started making it from my grandfather’s recipe with steak, Boston butts, and Pilleteri’s Italian Seasoning. We make it ALL YEAR LONG, and our customers love it. We are still the only store in the Birmingham area that makes it in our store.”

Also, during those early years, a lady came in saying she knew a butcher in Chicago who rubbed his steaks with a special powder that made them taste wonderful.

She brought me a sample, and I sent it to AC Legg in Calera, a seasoning company, for analysis of the ingredients. They discovered one ingredient was charcoal, which wasn’t good. Instead, we added garlic, onion, and powdered Worcestershire, and that invented our Pilleteri’s Original Steak Seasoning.”

“We put that seasoning in little pouches, and I hit the street running to all the grocery stores where I had previously had contacts for Purex products, and I asked them to let us put our seasoning on their shelves. The rest is history,” he said.

“Today, we have over 10 different flavors of seasonings and several sauces we sell, including our Pilleteri’s Original Steak seasoning, Pilleteri’s Greek and Italian seasonings, Mr. French Fry, Pilleteri’s Dream Wing Sauce, Pilleteri’s Liquid Marinade, Pilleteri’s White BBQ Sauce, Pilleteri’s Original BBQ Sauce, and others.”

wick Stew and Ollie’s BBQ sauces, are distributed through Alabama Home Products Inc. This company is managed by my daughter, Toni Kennedy, who does an outstanding job of inventory, working with distributors, and she does Mr. P’s accounting.”

“In 1999, after 25 years of renting, we bought our store and the entire strip mall. We converted some space into storage for our products, and we now rent to Bluff Park TV, Karen’s Art Shop, Birch Tree Day Spa, Birmingham Health Chiropractor, and the Bluff Park Ice Cream Shoppe.”

“We have always tried to be innovative. When the big grocery store chains started offering party trays and specialty food items, we knew we couldn’t compete with them in that arena. So we invented our own “gift boxes” which contain a variety of our quality meats and seasonings for special occasions, Gift Certificates, and Christmas Gift Boxes. They have become very popular,” he said.

“We also started packaging our meats into weekly and monthly ‘meat specials’, and our customers like the discounts.”

“Another example is how we got into serving sandwiches. In 1995, a butcher business opened on Valley Avenue, and I went over to take a look at their operation. I discovered that not too many folks were at their meat cases, but that a whole lot of people were buying their sandwiches. When I got back to the store, we put five stools up at the back counter and started using our quality meats to make sandwiches. Our business jumped over 20 percent!”

“One reason was that we weren’t stingy with the amount of meat we put on a sandwich. We stacked each one high. In fact, one day a customer came in and bought two sandwiches and a loaf of white bread. He sat down at a booth and made five sandwiches from the meat that was on the two sandwiches that he had bought.”

“Next, we enlarged our eating space, put in more booths, and grew that end of the business. The sandwich we sell most is Mr. P’s Favorite…a ¼

Above all, always be thankful for your employees and your customers and SHOW THEM.

“We have always liked being in Bluff Park,” he said. It’s a quiet, safe area, and the people are good neighbors, he said.

“So, you might say that Carol and I did it all, with a lot of help from my family. I butchered the meat.

We both worked the cash register, kept inventory stocked, and we did a lot of inventing and tasting new seasoning recipes.”

“During those years, whenever we had problems, I’d ask myself, ‘What would Daddy do? Those lessons I learned from him and my grandfather would help me meet the challenges we faced. Plus, I got my Dad and Mother Frances to work our register during busy periods. They helped to fix a lot of things, too.”

“In 2018, my wife, Carol, my partner in life and in the business, died. I was devastated. For a long time, I was just lost.” But I found Diane and remarried. We have been married for four years.

Her late husband had died of a heart attack. She not only loves and takes care of me, but she also works with me to build our business in any way she can. We help with Alabama Home Products in the afternoons if something needs to be done.”

“I’m trying to cut back on the time spent in the store, because I know my son, Chris, my daughter, Toni, and her husband, Scott Kennedy, are there to take charge. They run the day-to-day operations with a wealth of experience and dedication to maintaining the highest level of customer service.

We’re still a family business, just like we’ve always been,” said Pilleteri.

What has made the most difference in your success? “Simply put,” Pilleteri said, “we strive always to give our customers quality service that’s a step above what they might receive elsewhere. We always ensure that we provide them with quality meats and other products. We always try to treat our customers like they are our friends, that they are like family, too.”

When asked to give five words or phrases that best described him, Pilleteri said: •

“Just to illustrate the point. One time, something happened to our alarm system, and our doors broke and opened. I got a call saying customers were coming and going from our business and that I needed to check on it. I rushed over, walked around the whole store, and nothing was missing.

My customers had just been “looking” around.

That’s the kind of folks we’ve got up here.”

Pilleteri also said he would like to see two things change in Bluff Park. First, his business and shopping center are zoned as Birmingham. He would like the City of Hoover to annex his property so he can receive its services.

He told the story of a customer who locked his keys in his car while his child was still in the back seat. He called the Hoover Police for help; they said it was Birmingham’s territory. So, he called Birmingham; they said it was Hoover’s responsibility. Then he called Hoover again, and they came out. Before they could do anything, the man took the ax off Hoover’s vehicle, broke his own window, got his keys, and the child. That was back in the beginning, but now Hoover is here whenever we need them,” said Pilleteri.

“Second, I would like to have someone put up a guard rail on the bluff side, across from my property. In the past, several cars have run off the road, down into the bluff, and some people have been killed. It’s really a dangerous situation.”

When asked about his biggest challenge, Pilleteri said, “It’s being able to continue to hire good employees and pay them good wages so that they will stay with us and to instill in them the customer first qualities that have made us a successful business. In fact, we are looking for help today.”

“We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2025,” Pilleteri proudly said. “We’ve been fortunate enough to grow our core business to include not only Mr. P’s Butcher Shop and Deli, but also Alabama Home Products and Mr. P’s Properties (Our Rental Properties). We are grateful for our customers’ support over the years, and we truly value their friendship and patronage. We invite everyone to continue to visit Mr. P’s Butcher Shop and Deli and look for our Pilleteri’s products in your local grocery stores.

I’d Like to Keep My Cheeks Dry Today

One day, I decided to walk to the school around lunch time. You can do that.

As a parent of an enrolled student. No warning. No heads up. Just go. And I’ve got three kids over there. A lunch visit can take a while.

On that particular day, it was a little rainy. On weather apps these days, it’s possible to view the “hourly” charts, which, in my opinion, are speculative at best and a waste of time. Nevertheless, I checked it, and my walk did not appear to be in any sort of jeopardy.

BUT… I bought an umbrella on Amazon not long ago. It was a big one and the only umbrella that I had ever purchased in my life. It was also the only umbrella I ever recall being in possession of that wasn’t broken or too small or found by my children to be used as a lightsaber. Therefore, being one who often (and by “often” I mean “every now and then”) likes to never be caught unprepared, I grabbed that umbrella before I left the house.

Well, it rained. A lot. Downpour. The whole walk. I kept thinking it would let up, but no. Not until I had reached the awning at the front door, shaken off the water, leaned the umbrella against the outer wall, and walked inside did it taper off. You can do that. Leave personal belongings outside the front door of the school. Nobody messes with it.

This school is different, at least to my memory of elementary school. Of course, I come from a place where elementary school consisted of grades 1 through 6, and we shared a lunchroom with the high school, which consisted of grades 7 through 12. I don’t remember parents roaming freely through the halls or visiting for lunch unannounced.

It is indeed still a school, though, and it’s hard for me to walk through it without the ever present feeling that I just don’t belong. My heart rate increases, I start to sweat a little, and I fear that every teacher I run into is about to make me stand up and “repeat that in front of the class.”

The fears pass soon enough, and while I never can remember where my kids’ classrooms are, I know exactly how to get to the lunch room. My only qualm down there is the lack of real Coca-Cola that exists in the “Adults Only” coolers, an omission that I think we could all think deeply on before our heads hit the pillows tonight.

I love sitting at those tables with my kids and joking with their friends. You can do that. Joke with other kids. Especially when you know most of them by who their parents are. It’s a great, central hub for this strange little community we call Bluff Park.

I signed in with the new iPad system that took me twenty visits to figure out, printed out my “Visitor” sticker, said hello to Pace, the school resource officer, after I confidently entered the next set of protective doors, and made my way to the lunchroom.

The rain had stopped by the time I left that day, so I wouldn’t need the umbrella.

Get Your Beads Ready Krewe de Bluff Returns PHOTOS COURTESY VOTIVE STUDIO Bluff Park’s Mardi Gras season kicks off as the Krewe de Bluff prepares for its 2nd annual parade on February 14, Valentine’s Day, with the theme LOVE for 2026. The parade will follow the same route as last year, from Shades Cliff Pool to The Electric. A float decorating party is scheduled for February 13 at The Electric. Krewe members will enjoy exclusive access to the parade float, throws, and all necessary amenities for an easy and fun experience.

After a strong showing last year, organizers Harold Collins, Blake Schultz and Cody Perry are gearing up for an even bigger celebration. Harold Collins shares what’s new this year, “We will have a Twelfth Night Party at The Electric and the Mardi Gras Ball at Oris and Oak. We expect both to be great events and we look forward to gathering the community!”

What else can people expect? “A big, family-friendly party! The parade rolls at 11, and the after party at The Electric kicks off right after. Blake shares. “There will be live music, candy, beads, and lots of excitement along the route. The after party will have a band, food trucks, vendors, a kids’ area, and more.”

Event Recap

Hoover’s Christmas Tree Lighting Returned with New Holiday Highlights The City of Hoover kicked off the holiday season with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, in the parking lot of Hoover City Hall.

The event featured several new highlights, including a live nativity scene where kids and adults had a chance to pet a camel, goats, sheep, and other animals from Tickled Pink Petting Zoo in Randolph County.

Newly elected Mayor Nick Derzis lit the city’s new 45-foot-tall Christmas tree with help from special guest Isaac Floyd, a senior at Hoover High School, and a member of the Fire Science Academy at Riverchase Career Connection Center.

There were also festive performances by students from Hoover City Schools.

Guests enjoyed complimentary cider, hot chocolate, coffee, treats, and takehome crafts. Santa Claus arrived in style escorted by Hoover Police and the Hoover Fire Department.

Families also had the opportunity to take photos with the jolly one inside the Hoover Public Library. Additionally, Marines with the Toys for Tots Foundation were present to collect new, unwrapped toy donations from attendees.

Witches Take Flight The Bluff Park Witches Ride returned in October, in partnership with the Bluff Park Women’s Rec League, to fill the streets with cackling witches, candy, and cheer.

About 35 participants—many in bewitching costumes along with a few festive canines —made their way from Shades Cliff Pool to The Electric on foot, bikes, skates, and freshly decorated golf carts. Along the route, neighbors were treated to candy, pickleballs, and plenty of spirited witches.

The celebration continued at The Electric, where top witches were crowned in playful categories like Queen of the Cauldron, Flight of the Night, Coven Goals, and Crown of the Coven.

5th Annual Bluff Park 8K The 5th annual Bluff Park 8K brought the community together for a memorable morning of running, camaraderie, and support for a great cause. This milestone year saw 400 to 450 participants take to the course, ranging from first-time racers to seasoned runners.

Proceeds from the BP8K benefit the Bluff Park Elementary School Run Club, helping cover race fees, gear, and other essentials that keep young runners engaged and motivated.

The event also honored the memory of Emmet Conners, with a portion of the proceeds supporting United Ability and its mission to provide innovative services that empower individuals with disabilities to live meaningful, connected lives.

With strong participation, enthusiastic volunteers, and generous community support, the 5th anniversary Bluff Park 8K was a clear success and continues to build on a growing tradition of wellness, remembrance, and giving back.

Gwin Elementary Class Earns National Honor in FBI Online Safety Contest The FBI’s Birmingham Division visited Gwin Elementary School to recognize students for their performance in the FBI Safe Online Surfing Competition.

Students in Ms. Ottinger’s enrichment class placed fifth in the nation for the month of October. They received official certificates from the FBI for their exemplary knowledge of online safety and will advance to the next round of the national competition.

FBI-SOS is a free program that teaches students in grades 3-8 how to stay safe online. School leaders said they are proud of Gwin Elementary students for rising to the challenge and representing their community.

Bluff Park Residents Assemble Meal Kits to Support Local Families for the Holidays A group of Bluff Park residents gathered to bring holiday support to local families in need.

The group assembled 88 meal bags for Grace Klein Community, contributing to the nonprofit’s goal of collecting 1,000 kits for Papa J’s Christmas Workshop.

About 20 leftover cans were donated to Cari’s food barrel for Grace Klein. Each bag contains ingredients for a complete family meal, with Bluff Park preparing White Chicken Chili kits. The effort aims to bring holiday support to local families in need.

Bluff Park Tour of Homes returns for second year The now-annual event featured four homes decorated for Christmas STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATTHEW ALLEN Following the successful launch of the Bluff Park Tour of Homes in 2024, the event returned this year. More than 120 people took the tour, getting an up-close view of the four homes in Hoover’s historic Bluff Park community.

Patrons purchased a ticket and chose a departure time, with shuttles leaving every 20 minutes between 12-3:20pm. Each tour lasted approximately an hour and a half.

The homes on this year’s tour included: •

The host committee, which started the event in 2024, was pleased with this year’s event. “Ticket sales were a little lower than last year,” Matthew Allen said, “but it’s a busy time of year and an especially busy weekend in Bluff Park. Our guests raved about the four houses on this year’s tour, and we are already discussing the 2026 tour.”

The committee consists of Allen, Geni Bomar, Kimberly Fain, and Ginny Fowler.

Sponsors of the event included Carlo and Dianne Joseph, JC Heating & Cooling, Iron City Plumbing, EatDrinkRide Travel & Tours, and Bluff Park Creative.

The event raised money to benefit Neverthirst, a Birmingham-based nonprofit that brings clean water to impoverished communities around the world by building new water wells and infrastructure.

Mayor Nick Derzis has named veteran municipal executive Brian Muenger as Hoover’s new city administrator, bringing in a leader known for managing growth while keeping finances in check.

“Brian brings a level of experience, professionalism and steady leadership that will immediately strengthen our operations,” Derzis said, pointing to Muenger’s track record of “solving complex challenges” and “managing growth responsibly.”

Muenger arrives from Pell City, where he spent the past decade as city manager. There, he oversaw more than 230 employees and a $40 million operating budget, while guiding over $30 million in capital projects — all without issuing long-term debt. The result: major investment in roads, facilities and services, alongside a stronger balance sheet.

Muenger holds both a master’s in public administration and a bachelor’s in criminal justice/political science from Georgia College & State University. He is active in the International City/County Management Association and the Alabama City/County Management Association, where he is a past president and received the Vocational Excellence Award in 2022.

With nearly 20 years in city government, including senior roles in Talladega, Muenger has built a résumé that spans comprehensive planning, commercial development, grant work, and long-term capital and financial strategy. Derzis says that combination of

Bargains Galore This Bluff Park shopping event turns clutter into care

BY JUNE MATHEWS February will be here before you know it, and with it comes one of the most popular local shopping events of the year: Bargains on the Bluff 2026 Spring Sale, Feb. 19-21, at Bluff Park United Methodist Church (BPUMC).

“The merchandise at the spring sale is geared for the seasons running from St. Patrick’s Day through back-to-school,” said Jennifer Johnston, now in her second year as chairperson for Bargains on the Bluff. “We sell items for fall and winter at our September sale.”

For shoppers, the semi-annual blowout offers incredible deals on gently used children’s clothing, toys, baby gear, costumes, dance wear, and more. A growing emphasis on consignment items for women has brought in clothing, including maternity wear, as well as shoes, purses, and jewelry.

Bargains on the Bluff is a significant source of funding for BPUMC’s children’s programs, including VBS, summer camp activities, and Bluff Park Preschool. Consignment sale funds built the playground adjacent to the church, and the financial boost allows BPUMC to continue offering its free VBS programs each summer.

“I never would have guessed how expensive VBS is,” said Johnston, “but last summer, we were able to offset the cost for close to 300 kids, possibly the most that have ever attended.”

Last year’s fall sale netted $40,000 with 70 percent going to the consignors, and 30 percent going to BPUMC. The church portion is divided between its children’s programs and the preschool.

For consignors, preparations for the February sale officially began on Thanksgiving Day with the activation of the online seller’s packet containing registration forms and everything they need to know about participating in the sale.

“Filling everything out can take a while,” said Johnston, “so we like to give everybody plenty of time.”

According to Amy Matheson, Johnston’s predecessor as chair, Bargains on the Bluff began over 20 years ago, thanks to a group of moms whose kids attended preschool at BPUMC. “They wanted to come up with an event to help fund more activities and supplies for the children of the church, and they decided on a consignment sale,” she said.

Back then, determining how much each consignor made was a manual 44

method involving a system of index cards sorted into brown bags after the sale, Matheson said. But nowadays, the sales are digitized, creating an easier, less time-consuming process the day of the sale.

Still, though, a project of this magnitude requires lots of helping hands, so volunteers are heavily relied upon to keep Bargains on the Bluff running smoothly.

“We try to involve the community as much as possible, and we’re always looking for more help,” said Johnston. “Anyone interested in volunteering should go to bargainsonthebluff.com, click on the ‘Volunteers’ tab, and register. They can choose the days they want to work, plus the volunteers get to shop early.”

And then there’s the backbone of any consignment sale: the shoppers. They show up in droves, and to most the bargains are irresistible. But shoppers are important for another reason besides the support they provide through their spending.

“We’ve found that shoppers often tend to turn into volunteers or consignors,” said Johnston, “and we can always use more of both.”
