EDITOR’S NOTE Every January brings with it a quiet sense of hope, a reset button of sorts. As we step into 2026, I’m reminded once again that the heart of Birmingham beats strongest through the passion, creativity, and compassion of its people—and this month’s stories reflect that so well.

We start with a spotlight on the Birmingham Boys Choir, whose year-round performances continue to be a cherished tradition. The choir’s commitment to discipline and artistry reminds us of the power of nurturing young talent and celebrating the arts community. Read about this special group on page 22.

Speaking of young talent, our feature on Spain Park High School’s STEM students (page 8) is one that shows what is possible when talented kids partner with a nonprofit such as United Ability.

Students in the school’s engineering academy, along with input from UA therapists, designed and built custom wheelchairs for children with mobility challenges. It’s problem-solving rooted in science, innovation, and empathy, and their work is a beautiful example of what happens when education connects directly with community needs.

We also take time this month to honor Bruce Andrews, who has recently retired after 12 years at the helm of the Shelby County Arts Council. Under his leadership, the council has blossomed into a vibrant hub for creativity, supporting artists of every age and medium. His vision helped expand arts education and accessibility, and his legacy will continue to shape the organization for years to come. Read more on page 18.

Here Comes the New Year

It’s the New Year and, judging by day. I firmly believed that. So, people’s resolutions, they think each morning I let my mother they’re supposed to be doing make my bed. all sorts of impressive things But now that I’m older, I’ve like losing weight, saving more decided to make our bed every money, training for marathons, morning. etc.

Another change I’m making: Well, I’m making some I’m going to play with my phone changes this year, too. Only less. Phones are time-suckers.

I’m making little changes. Big So, I’m not going to play on my Sean Dietrich changes never last for me. It’s phone. Instead, I’m going to little ones that stick. So, I’m going to start by spend quality time playing on my wife’s phone. making my bed every morning.

I’m going to eat more bacon. Life is too short When I was a kid, my mother believed, firmly, to deprive oneself of bacon. A woman named that making the bed set a positive tone for each Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York,

lived until age 116. She was skinny and healthy and she ate a serving of bacon every day. But frankly, I don’t want to live to 116, so I will also eat queso dip to offset things.

I’m going to give to homeless people more often. Every time I drive past a homeless guy, I think to myself, “He’s just looking for drugs.” But my conscience knows better. And addicts need lunch, too.

I’m going to run some 5Ks or 10Ks, for good causes. I’m going to do this because I enjoy running, because I like meeting people, and above all, because there is often free beer at the finish line.

I’m going to have more fun and not apologize for it. More fishing trips. More camping trips. And I’m finally going to get around to making that honey-do list. In fact, I’m going to write the list right now, so my wife can get started.

I’m going to laugh more. And if I can’t laugh, I’m going to make someone else laugh.

And if I can’t make someone laugh, I’m

going to drink beer.

More pizza. More pasta. More salad.

I’m going to make an effort to enjoy tiny moments in my life. Not just the big ones.

I mean the happenings that I never pay attention to. The taste of chocolate. The smell of summer rain. Colonoscopies.

I’m going to tell people I love them. Not just family and friends, but anyone who crosses my path. I’m going to use these words often. “I love you, I love you, I love you,” I’ll go around saying.

I’m going to say yes more than I say no. I’m going to worry less. And whenever I catch myself worrying, I’m not going to worry about it.

And if I can’t do any of the above because I’m too uncommitted, too undisciplined, or just flat lazy. I’m not going to be disappointed in myself. I’m going to eat some bacon and congratulate myself.

Because at least I made the bed this morning.

Engineering Joy

Spain Park High School students team up with United Ability’s Hand In Hand program to transform toy cars into life-changing mobility tools for children.

BY STEPHANIE GIBSON LEPORE Students from Spain Park High School’s Engineering Academy partnered with the Hand In Hand Early Learning Program at United Ability to build customized electric cars for children with disabilities. With support from a Toshiba grant, the students worked alongside United Ability therapists to adapt the cars so children could operate them independently, giving them new ways to move, play, and explore. The cars can be driven by the child or guided with a remote control, ensuring independence and safety. “Having an adapted car helps kids who can’t move—or who have a difficult time doing so—explore their environments, learn consequences of their actions (such as driving into an obstacle), and master special skills, like navigating from one place to another or turning the wheel,” 8 Bham Family January 2026

Active Engineering Education

Spain Park’s Engineering Academy, established in 2007, has become one of Hoover City Schools’s premier Career and Technical Education programs.

The four-year academy is designed to prepare students for engineering majors and technical careers by guiding them through real-world, handson problem solving. Teachers who are themselves trained engineers lead students through increasingly complex coursework for four years, pairing advanced math and science with technical electives such as circuitry, CAD modeling, and robotics.

The Academy’s philosophy extends beyond technical proficiency; students also develop essential soft skills, from writing résumés to

presenting complex ideas effectively, that position them well for college admissions and internships.

Competitive teams, such as the Technology Student Association, VEX Robotics, and the Testing of Engineering Aptitude in Math and Science (TEAMS) team give students additional opportunities to apply what they learn in authentic, high-pressure environments. The result is a robust pipeline of students who go on to thrive in engineering programs and high-tech industries.

A Purpose-Driven Partnership

The collaboration with United Ability began four years ago when Engineering Academy teacher Elizabeth Browne, searching for meaningful, community-focused opportunities for her seniors, reached out to Marliese. Marliese, already familiar with engineering programs through her work with UAB students, welcomed the opportunity to partner. Since then, she has hosted Spain Park seniors annually for facility tours, introductions to therapists, and candid discussions about inclusive and accessible design. “She really encourages students to think about engineering design for people of all ability levels,” Elizabeth says. Marliese now

serves as both a project advisor and a member of the Engineering Academy’s Advisory Board.

Solutions for Therapeutic Needs

For a recent project, students were tasked with adapting off-the-shelf ride-on electric cars to the unique physical and developmental needs of five children served by the Hand In Hand program.

These modifications required students to pull together skills they had been building over three years in the Academy—circuit modification, 3D design and printing, and custom fabrication among them.

The students were divided into teams, and each team was assigned a child, their family, and a physical therapist (PT). PTs and students emailed back and forth as each car was customized.

Because students were not able to meet the children prior to delivery day, communication with therapists and parents happened primarily through email. Students asked questions, requested measurements, and submitted proposed designs for approval. They also gathered personal details— favorite colors, characters, and interests—to make each child’s car feel truly their own. “The

therapists are experts on what type of physical accommodations are needed, and the parents are experts on what their child likes and what will motivate them best,” says Marliese. “Everything we do is centered around giving these young ‘clients’ independent mobility,” Elizabeth says. “Mobility helps them explore, interact with their peers, and build confidence. That’s huge for social and cognitive development.”

Creating appropriate harnessing and switching mechanisms was often the most challenging aspect. Many children required custom supports, alternative activation buttons, or adapted seating.

In some cases, cars had to be brought back to the high school after the initial delivery for additional adjustments. Elizabeth notes that this wasn’t a setback—it was an authentic lesson in the engineering design cycle. “Continuous improvement is part of what engineers do,” she says. “Making revisions ensured the cars truly enhanced each child’s mobility.”

“Seeing the children sit in the cars for the first time and seeing the families’ reactions was overwhelming,” says Marliese. “These cars don’t exist in the ‘real world,’ so it’s not an option most people have. But those with disabilities deserve to

While the technical challenges were significant, Elizabeth believes the personal growth she observed was even more profound. “Each student grew not just in their technical understanding of how these cars work, but in empathy,” she says.

From Space Shuttles to State Stories

Adventure awaits inside the Children’s Gallery at the Museum of Alabama Families searching for a fresh, imaginative, and hands-on learning experience have a new destination to add to their weekend plans: the Children’s Gallery at the Museum of Alabama, located inside the Alabama Department of Archives & History in Montgomery. This brandnew space, developed by skilled exhibit designers, fabricators, and media producers, invites young visitors to explore Alabama’s past—and imagine their own place in its future—through an engaging, interactive environment.

Since the 1980s, highlights of museum visits for families had been The Hands-On Gallery and Grandma’s Attic platform, with learning and 12 Bham Family January 2026

play activities for young children, however, the space had not undergone significant updates in three decades. During the planning phase for the new gallery, an advisory group consisting of early childhood education experts and families helped the archives team ensure the new learning spaces reflected current research in early-childhood academic approaches. The resulting gallery, which opened in late November 2025, is an immersive space with history and civics concepts geared toward children ages 2 to 10.

The focal point of the gallery is a life-size, climb-inside space shuttle that looks ready for liftoff. Children can take the pilot’s seat, flip switches,

run systems, and experiment with the controls as they imagine what it’s like for astronauts, engineers, and mission operators. The shuttle is not just a prop—it’s a learning tool designed to fuel curiosity while celebrating Alabama’s significant contributions to aerospace technology.

But the space shuttle is only one part of the adventure. Elsewhere in the Children’s Gallery, Alabama history comes alive through touch and play, giving families an accessible way to introduce our state’s rich cultural and natural heritage. From ecology to industry, and from early peoples to the modern era, the exhibits introduce big ideas in kid-friendly ways. At the Alabama’s Natural World exhibit, explore habitats—from mountains to rivers and coastlines—and discover how they helped shape industry. An opening in the ecology wall leads to an immersive limestone cave experience, where young explorers can learn about bats, salamanders, ferns, and more. Other stations to explore include a home kitchen, a school room, community building, and a garden.

A group of animal friends, created by illustrator Michelle Hazelwood Hyde, guides guests through the gallery, while “playful prompts” encourage

discussion between adults and children.

The new gallery also aligns with the Museum of Alabama’s wider mission: to share the history of the state and its people through engaging and accessible exhibits. By investing in a dedicated children’s area, the museum acknowledges something parents already know well: When children can actively participate in the learning process, their curiosity takes flight. Whether your child dreams of rocketing into space, exploring the wilderness, or simply pushing every button in sight, the Children’s Gallery offers hours of discovery, both educational and exciting.

The home of Alabama history since 1901, the Alabama Department of Archives & History is the oldest state-funded historical agency in the United States. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and share the stories of the people of Alabama through their historical materials. The Museum of Alabama is the Archive’s immersive learning environment, where items from its collections are on display. Fun Across the River Make family memories in Columbus, Georgia

If you’re looking for a family getaway that mixes adventure with culture and just enough surprise to keep everybody alert, let me introduce you to Columbus, Georgia. I spent a weekend exploring this riverfront city and quickly discovered that it’s a true multigenerational playground.

This isn’t the kind of place where the fun comes with an age limit. Columbus is a “something for everybody” destination. Grandparents can stroll the Riverwalk, teens (and adventurous adults) can zipline across state lines, little ones can explore hands-on science exhibits, and the whole family can bond over experiences you’ll talk about long after you’re home again.

Let me walk you through the places that made me fall in love with Columbus. My trip just might inspire your next family adventure.

WHERE TO STAY I stayed at Hotel Indigo at Riverfront Place, a modern boutique hotel perched right along the Chattahoochee River.

The moment I stepped into the lobby, I knew I’d chosen well.

Warm lighting, stylish decor, and breathtaking river views whispered, “Relax. You’re in good hands.”

The location was so convenient. Restaurants, cafés, shops, and the Riverwalk were all just minutes away. It was the perfect launchpad for a fun-filled weekend.

DIVE INTO MUSEUMS AND HISTORY I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Columbus is truly a museum-lover’s dream. The city brings art, history, science, and nostalgia to life in meaningful and unforgettable ways.

COLUMBUS COLLECTIVE MUSEUMS: Columbus Collective Museums was one of my favorite stops. Think of a restored warehouse-turned-treasure box, filled with mini-museums: lunch boxes, radio history, peanut memorabilia, Coca-Cola, and more. The collections themselves are impressive, but it was the family behind them, multiple generations working sideby-side, who brought everything to life. Their passion, storytelling, and commitment ensure this beloved collection will remain a Columbus staple for generations.

NATIONAL INFANTRY MUSEUM & SOLDIER CENTER: I thought I had a sense of what to expect, but the National Infantry Museum was far bigger than I imagined and far more emotional than I was prepared for. It feels like something you’d find at a Smithsonian, yet it sits in West Georgia. Named the #1 Free Museum in America for seven consecutive years, it delivers a powerful, immersive experience for visitors of every age. For the fullest impact, take a guided tour—and don’t

NATIONAL CIVIL WAR NAVAL MUSEUM: If your family loves stories of ingenuity and maritime history, this museum pulls you in from the moment you step inside. The massive CSS Jackson steals your attention first. It is towering, haunting, and tied to the remarkable legacy of master bridge builder Horace King, whose craftsmanship shaped both the ship and the region. As you make your way through the rest of the museum, you’ll walk through ship sections, detailed replicas, and

hands-on displays. You start to feel what life at sea might have been like. The creak of the wood, the tight passageways, and the reconstructed gun decks all add up to an experience where history rises up around you.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE AND HANDS-ON FUN The museums aren’t the only highlight of Columbus. The city also shines bright when it comes to outdoor experiences.

WHITEWATER EXPRESS AND BLUE HERON ADVENTURE PARK: Adventure-seekers will love Whitewater Express and Blue Heron Adventure Park, home to the world’s longest urban white-water rafting course and one of the most exhilarating outdoor experiences in Georgia. Families looking for adventure will find it here, with everything from calming rapids to high-volume rapids that rival white-water sites anywhere in the United States. The course features a dam-controlled flow that can reach up to 13,000

cubic feet per second. Along with rafting, the location offers bike and tubing rentals.

Just steps away, the Blue Heron Adventure Park raises the excitement a little more—literally. You’ll strap in for a dual-state zipline that crosses the Chattahoochee River from Georgia into Alabama and back again, then tackle a treetop canopy course at heights that command attention.

Columbus Gave Me More Than I Expected I hadn’t been to Columbus in years, and I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the city surprised me in the best way. It gave me adventure when I needed excitement, quiet corners when I needed calm, and food and experiences that left lasting memories. More than anything, it reminded me that some destinations deserve a second look because, sometimes, the places you think you already know end up showing you something completely new.

Columbus did exactly that, and I can’t wait to go back.

BY STEPHANIE GIBSON LEPORE After twelve years at the helm of the Shelby County Arts Council (SCAC), Executive Director Bruce Andrews recently stepped away from his position, leaving behind a thriving arts community, strengthened regional identity, and model of collaboration that has drawn attention far beyond Columbiana. For Bruce, the milestone is less about personal achievement and more about what can happen when a community agrees to dream together.

“If I had to pick one major accomplishment,” says Bruce, “ it would be leading a collaborative effort between our nonprofit arts organization, a municipal government, county government, and a strong array of donors and grantors.” Many communities, he notes, are still asking how SCAC managed to build such a robust arts system in a small town. From Artist to Administrator

Bruce’s journey to arts leadership was anything but linear. Before becoming an administrator, he spent decades as a working artist and musician, experiences that gave him a rare dual perspective. “There were times in my life when I had to meet the needs of art clients just to pay my bills,” he says. “Knowing that side of the creative coin is valuable.”

His understanding of community arts deepened when he was invited to design and teach an arts program in the county’s juvenile detention center, a program that continues today. “It was amazing to see the redemptive aspect of creative activity.”

Writing the grant narrative that extended the program became his unexpected entry into nonprofit work. Running a growing arts organization demanded sacrifices. “I never completely balanced my creative pursuits with administrative work,” Bruce says. “Much of my personal art had to be set aside.”

However, he feels the trade-off was worth it.

Like anyone who leads an organization, the work requires an all-in commitment—and Bruce is proud of the results.

Transforming the Arts Culture

During the past decade, Bruce watched the Shelby County arts scene expand dramatically.

Data backs that growth, but stories illustrate it. One of SCAC’s most notable accomplishments is the Song Theater, a venue that has drawn audiences from across the country.

While most patrons live within 100 miles, roughly half come from outside the county.

For Bruce, this demonstrates a powerful truth. “People will drive to a small town to see their favorite artist—and they’ll spend money in the community when they do,” he says. Some of the venue’s success stories have become part of local lore, including early performances by the Red Clay Strays, now CMA Award winners and one of the hottest rock bands in the country.

Programs that Change Lives

When asked which SCAC programs have had the greatest impact, Andrews doesn’t hesitate: “That’s easy—all of them!” Still, certain moments stand out. He highlights classes for adults with disabilities from the ARC of Shelby County—taught by Chris Cruz—as especially meaningful. (“They love her!” says Bruce.) Outside his former office, he listened to the “refreshing and inspirational” sound of music teachers coaching student musicians one-on-one. And he speaks with pride about the pottery community and the campus’s full metal arts foundry led by master craftsman Nelson Grice, whose sculptures—including the “Miss Fancy” elephant at Avondale Park—are visible all over town.

Looking Ahead and Letting Go

As SCAC begins its search for a new executive director, Bruce hopes to see someone who not only embraces the mission, but also lives it. “We believe the infusion of arts and culture into a community raises the value of that community at every level,” he says. The next leader must be able to create, launch, nurture, and fund arts programs, and also collaborate with city, county, and

state stakeholders. “The nucleus of our organization is a viable community of artists, and if that community is nurtured and grows, everything we need to bless the community grows out of that.”

Bruce resists talk of legacy. “As long as I’m a good husband, father, grandfather, and friend— that would be cool,” he says. But he’s confident he gave SCAC his best effort. “I believe God assigned me to it, and now it’s time to pass that baton.” He looks forward to returning to his creative roots: watercolor painting, songwriting, and perhaps finally writing the illustrated book he has long imagined. Or maybe, he jokes, he’ll simply enjoy a cup of coffee while staring at the horizon.

A Message to Future Creatives

To young artists and aspiring arts leaders, Bruce offers clear advice: Create opportunities for people to gather. “Community is more important than ever,” he says. “AI is growing and could be a good assistant for creativity, or it could be considered a replacement to human creativity. It’s vital to counter that by being hands-on, transparent, and engaging.” Do that, he says, and “you have something that can grow.”

Finding Harmony The Birmingham Boys Choir helps participants hit their high notes in confidence, character, and friendship

BY STEPHANIE GIBSON LEPORE For more than half a century, the Birmingham Boys Choir has been a familiar and beloved presence in the city’s cultural landscape. What began as a modest community ensemble in 1973 has grown into a robust, performance-based program that now serves approximately 150 boys ages 8 to 18. Members come from across the metro area, bringing with them a wide range of backgrounds and musical experiences. Over the years, the program has expanded, adding concerts, camps, and community partnerships, but the mission of artistry and character development has remained consistent. At its core, the Birmingham Boys Choir is committed to excellence in the centuries-old choral tradition and to the formation of young 22 Bham Family January 2026

men through music.

In 2023, Jeff Caulk stepped into the role of executive director, a position he describes as both a privilege and a calling. “Professionally, I’m responsible for stewarding the mission— building partnerships, sustaining scholarships, and overseeing the daily operations that make our boys’ growth possible,” he says. “And personally, it’s deeply rewarding to watch families and choristers flourish together.” Being close to that transformation—seeing a boy’s confidence grow or watching siblings and parents connect through rehearsals and performances—is part of what motivates him each day.

This focus on formation is captured in a phrase often used within the program: “More than music—training for life.” Jeff explains that

the philosophy isn’t abstract. “In rehearsal and performance, boys learn discipline, responsibility, manners, and teamwork alongside vocal technique, music theory, and artistry—habits that shape character as much as they shape sound,” he says. The choir purposely uses each step, from auditions to concerts, to instill confidence, humility, and leadership. “This ensures the lessons last far beyond the stage.”

Guiding a boys choir comes with both challenges and rewards. Jeff notes that one of the biggest challenges is balancing high musical standards with the joyful energy that boys naturally bring. Another is ensuring access: Tuition covers only part of the true cost of training, so scholarships are essential to making the program available to all families. “The reward is unmistakable,” says Jeff. “It’s watching boys become brothers—growing in skill, confidence, and kindness—and seeing families and audiences lifted by their work.”

The long-term influence of the program is evident in countless stories. Jeff says it’s common to see a quiet fifth-grader enter the choir tentatively, then gradually grow into a

section leader who mentors younger choristers.

Parents often report that those same boys become more focused, gracious, and resilient at home and school. “Many alumni carry those habits into civic and professional leadership across Birmingham, a ripple effect we hear about often,” he says.

The audition process itself is intentionally welcoming. Families begin online, and the inperson portion is short, friendly, and accessible.

“We listen for pitch and rhythm, explore range, and look for curiosity and coachability,” says Jeff.

No prior training is necessary. The team views the audition as an encouraging first step into the Birmingham Boys Choir family.

Service is also central to the choir’s mission.

Each year, choristers and their families participate in a meal-packing event that provides thousands of meals both locally and to communities outside Alabama. Working side-by-side reinforces empathy, humility, and team-first leadership—“exactly the kind of formation that “more than music— training for life” is meant to produce,” says Jeff.

presents each year, one stands above the rest: the annual Christmas concert. Free to the community as a gift, the event brings together alumni, families, and new friends for a night that captures the joy of the season and the spirit of the choir at its best. But the choir remains active throughout the year, as well. Next month, the choir will perform at the annual Taste of Birmingham at The Club and, in March, current choristers will join with BBC alumni for a collaborative concert. The 48th Annual Spring Concert will take place May 17 at Asbury UMC. Looking ahead, Jeff says he is focused on expanding access across more schools and zip codes, strengthening scholarships through a Legacy Campaign, and deepening service partnerships.

“Building the systems and staffing that sustain excellence will help ensure the BBC remains a model of musical and character formation for years to come.”

Student Leads Food Drive Team Altamont student Cecilia Weinert led the school’s recent Knights Fighting Hunger campaign, collecting 973 pounds of food to support an estimated 810 individuals and households via the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. Student teams competed for donations, with the White Team gathering 568 items and the Gold Team gathering 508.

Math Team Wins Contest

The Vestavia Hills High School math team won the Oklahoma State University math contest, with 13 of the top 15 students from VHHS: 1st place Mina Hu; 2nd place (tie) Alan Sheng and Tate Bogdanchik; 3rd place (tie) Tina Gao and Eric Wang; 4th place (tie) Aiden Billano and Grace Ding; 5th place (tie) Connor Moorhouse, Aditya Sheelavant, and Vaughan Milliman; 6th place (tie) Ryaan Singh, Jaymin Bae, and Krish Chintareddy.

Homewood Swim Team Places The Homewood women’s swim team finished the AHSAA State Championships 7A/6A division in 8th place. The only 6A school to finish higher than Homewood was Spain Park High School.

Hoover High Scholar Continues to Excel

PE Teacher Awarded Grant Melissa Hubauer, a PE teacher at Rocky Ridge Elementary, was recently surprised with the CBS 42 One Classroom at a Time grant as her students looked on. She intends to purchase 9 square equipment— an active game that gets kids moving and connecting—for her PE students to use.

Hoover High School graduate Rotimi Kukoyi, now a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named one of 32 students to the American Rhodes Scholar Class of 2026. He was chosen from a group of 965 candidates who were nominated by their colleges and universities. He will begin his studies at Oxford in October. Rotimi graduated from Hoover High School in 2022 and has since been named a Truman Scholar and senior class president. During his time at Hoover, he was a captain of the varsity soccer team, appeared on Jeopardy! Teen Tournament, and received the Finley Award for character. He was accepted to more than 15 universities and received $2 million in scholarship offers. He intends to pursue a career in public health

Anders found his match

Anders was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition that was affecting his immune health and significantly impacting his overall development.
