SMALLMUN
BG is home to the largest Model United Nations conference in Scandinavia.
Birkerød Gymnasium’s Model United Nations (BIGMUN) is a huge event in BG’s calendar year and a proud tradition at BG, involving the entire school and numerous staff and teachers. After having been cancelled for two years due to the COVID-19 situation, this school year it finally seemed as if the conference could go ahead as planned. However, as the conference takes place in February and COVID still had not loosened its grip, BIGMUN was cancelled for foreign schools, and later for Danish schools as well.
Luckily Birkerød Gymnasium has a dedicated, determined, and motivated group of students with a passion for Model United Nations, who wanted to keep the BIGMUN tradition alive. So the students decided to put on BIGMUN for BG students only during the weekend of 25th and 26th February.
The students nicknamed it SMALLMUN, due to the few participants. Normally over 300 participants take part in BIGMUN divided into 14 different committees and councils to simulate the United Nations. This time there were fewer than 30 participants and only two committees. But that did not stop the students from getting a lot out of the event and four resolutions went forward to the General Assembly to be debated. All passed, thanks to hard negotiations and collaboration between the delegates.
Well done to all students involved for keeping the BIGMUN spirit and tradition alive!
