2022 annual report

2022 annual report
It has been an incredible year of change at Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, and we are thrilled to present you with your BGCSV 2022 Annual Report. We could not be more enthusiastic about the advancement of opportunity for the underserved youth of Silicon Valley in the past year as a coalition of supporters and partners came together to catalyze unprecedented growth. With your help, BGCSV expanded services for kids in need more than any year in our 79-year history.
As satisfying as it can be to celebrate progress, it is more important than ever to provide our youth with the necessary tools and opportunities to succeed. Your contributions have played a pivotal role in enabling us to offer programs that foster academic success, promote healthy lifestyles, and develop leadership skills among the children and teens we serve. By investing in their potential, we are empowering the next generation of innovators, leaders, and community members who will shape the future of Silicon Valley and beyond.
We want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering commitment and generosity in support of our mission. Thank you for your generosity, trust, and commitment to Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people who need us most.
This report reveals tremendous progress, but we will continue to lean on you for your guidance and support as we strive to meet the need so many continue to face in our community each day. Unprecedented growth is exciting, but we remain steadfastly focused on the work left to do to ensure that all young people have access to opportunities and belonging provided by the staff and programming you all support.
Thank you for all you continue to do for kids in need. We remain deeply grateful to each and every one of you and look forward to our continued collaboration in this worthy effort.
In Service,
Steve Wymer President & CEO Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley Brian Papay Chair, Board of Directors Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon ValleyFounded in 1944, Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley (BGCSV) is a non-profit youth development organization that offers innovative and effective afterschool and summer enrichment programs primarily for low income, at-risk Santa Clara County youth ages 5-18+ years. BGCSV serves 5,000 youth at 33 locations in San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and Hollister.
The majority of the youth we serve are living in economically depressed, high crime neighborhoods with an absence of adult role models or mentors and lack of access to opportunity. Our clubs are open to youth in these areas who need us most–after school and all day in the summer. Through holistic programming, safe spaces, and one-on-one mentorship and guidance, we help thousands of kids and teens develop the essential skills they need to thrive.

Our Mission is To inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring adults.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley is proud to recognize Isaac as our 2022 Youth of the Year— our organization’s highest honor.
Growing up in south San Jose, in a challenging neighborhood, Isaac felt out of place—and was painfully shy. It was also during this time that his father was diagnosed with a chronic health condition. This was a period of uncertainty and emotional stress for Isaac and the entire family. But as difficult as these experiences were, Isaac found refuge at the Club.
A member for over ten years, Isaac has participated in our C5 programs (e.g., Power Hour, STEM), arts, sports leagues, life skills programs such as Passport to Manhood and leadership programs such as Keystone Club—and serving as President of his clubhouse’s Leaders In Training program.
“From the very first day I started coming to the Club, there was a real feeling of warmth and acceptance. Two things you associate with a family,” Isaac says. “The gentle and patient way staff nurtured me and encouraged me while also participating in engaging activities—like science, arts, sports— I began to feel a sense of confidence. I was learning. And I was growing.”
“At every Boys & Girls Club the trusting relationships young people have with adult staff is the foundation of the Club experience,” Isaac says. “Through these relationships I’ve learned important values like honesty, responsibility, compassion and community. And the Club has also given something else: hope and opportunity.”
Now a high school senior, Isaac plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley and major in computer science in the hopes of working in technology here in Silicon Valley.
Youth of the Year is a four-month long leadership development program that celebrates the remarkable lives of Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley members who have distinguished themselves through strength of character and academic success. Throughout the program, Youth of the Year candidates will practice public speaking, essay writing, team building, and more. At the annual Youth of the Year Gala, each finalist will share their story with the entire Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley community, and one youth will be awarded the title of Citywide Youth of the Year. The Citywide Youth of the Year receives a college scholarship and the opportunity to advance to Boys & Girls Clubs’ Northern California Youth of the Year competition.
What I’ve learned at the Club— trust, empathy, optimism, strength and compassion--has served me well all these years. And it will serve me well into my future. I will never forget the Club and what it means to me. It means family.
- Isaac, Youth of the Year 2022
The community continued to support youth in the transition back to school through supply drives, providing much needed materials to Club members.
100% of all eligible high school seniors graduated on time and are attending colleges including CSU Fullerton, Evergreen College, UC Davis, and UC Merced.
Google sponsored a carnival-themed summer celebration at Alviso Clubhouse. Campers enjoyed an obstacle course, popcorn, snow cones, a giant connect four game, and a chance to soak their youth development staff in the dunk tank.
Dec
Boys & Girls Clubs could not be more enthusiastic to present the latest additions to the Club family. 16 new school-based sites were added this fall: 13 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school, bringing BGCSV’s total number of locations to 33. These additions include Navigator Schools in Gilroy and Hollister and the San Jose locations of Rocketship Public Schools as well as four satellite locations in Concord, Antioch, and Redwood City. These new sites will allow us to more than double our impact in the community, expanding our reach deeper into areas where youth and families are most in need of support.
Thanks to our amazing community, Club members celebrated the season all month long with festive activities, seasonal crafts, and celebrations. Over 1,250 holiday gifts were donated to Club youth this year by community partners, making more great memories possible for youth and their families.
We know that the path to building great futures starts with closing the opportunity gap among disadvantaged youth and the communities in which they live. Preparing local youth with the skills required to succeed in college and a career directly positions them for success in our 21st century world. 2023 will be marked by a strong commitment to expanding teen programming, workforce development, and college readiness.
Learning, staying active, and having fun
School may be out, but learning is always in at Boys & Girls Clubs. Over the summer, Club members participate in enjoyment-based learning that builds each participant’s voice and allows them to explore their interests. Our summer program is 7 weeks of engaging physical activities and academic enrichment, fostering leadership skills
and building self-confidence in a positive and uplifting environment. The fun isn’t exclusive to just younger campers either: teen leaders receive hands-on experience through their mentorship of younger members and participation in workshops that cover communication, conflict resolution, money management, resume writing, and interviewing.

This program is a huge benefit for our child and all the kids in our school. He gets fed, help with homework, and a chance to play with his peers every day.
Since the very first Club opened in 1944 with the purpose of giving local kids a safe place to go, safety has been the No. 1 priority of Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley.
After all, safety is where it all begins. Our data shows that environments that are safe, positive, and inclusive are essential for young people’s development. When kids feel safe, they’re empowered to learn, connect with their peers, and explore their interests. At Boys & Girls Clubs, kids and teens can rely on a safe, consistent and welcoming environment where they can focus on what’s most important—being a kid.
The landscape of youth safety has drastically changed in our 79-year history. From public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic to the Internet’s impact on bullying and selfesteem, kids face new threats to their stability and well-being each day.
To meet the evolving safety needs of kids, families and communities, Boys & Girls Clubs works continuously to enhance safety policies, practices and trainings to ensure youth are safe and protected. Providing safe spaces for young people is our No. 1 job.
Volunteers are a critical resource to the Club. While in-person volunteering was largely put on hold for the past two years, this year was marked by a strong return to the community with many volunteers and organizations supporting the Club’s work wherever they were needed.
May—Smythe Clubhouse Remodel
We are proud to recognize Venture Church for their outstanding contribution to the Boys & Girls Clubs community. The church’s congregation came together to give Smythe Clubhouse a complete makeover, with almost 500 members dedicating their time and resources to cleaning, organizing, painting, landscaping, and completely refurbishing the building. The project involved everything from installing new fixtures to creating an entire mini garden, with no detail overlooked. The result is a beautifully refurbished space that youth in the community can be proud of. Thanks to Venture Church’s efforts, Smythe Clubhouse has undergone a stunning transformation that will benefit the community for years to come.
42 Home Depot employees volunteered at the Levin Clubhouse for a beautification day. They worked hard to improve the grounds, re-mulching the entire area, updating the landscaping, rebuilding planter boxes, and upgrading the space. Thanks to a generous gift of $15,000, the Levin Clubhouse was also able to purchase new gardening tools, including rakes, a lawnmower, and a new outdoor shed. These tools will enable the Club to continue providing youth with hands-on opportunities to learn about gardening and the natural world.
California’s Great America donated 800 Winterfest tickets for kids & families from Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, giving them a chance to enjoy all the thrills of an amusement park and the holidays. Home Depot, Kohls, and PwC volunteers also partnered up for the event to provide a variety of activities for the kids, including arts and crafts, an ornament building station, photo booths, and a holiday buffet. We are grateful to California’s Great America and volunteers from Home Depot, Kohls, and PwC for their generosity and support of our kids and families.
Our incredible community of individual donors, corporate partners, and community leaders contributed more than $790,000 , directly providing more youth every day with the services they need to learn & thrive.

Community and business leaders came together in March to celebrate the resiliency, determination, and outstanding achievements of our youth. Guests experienced the Club at youth lead activity stations, heard from Youth of the Year finalists as they shared their inspiring stories, and celebrated the announcement of the 2022 Youth of the Year.

On Aug. 24, the Club held a ribbon cutting and check presentation to celebrate ServiceNow’s generous $100,000 gift that funded a new state-of-the-art technology center at the Morgan Hill Clubhouse. The new space brings together the positive environment of the club and innovative technology to promote education and key technical skill development in youth. The center features new computers, televisions, and even a 3-D printer.

Over 125 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day at Almaden Golf & Country Club while providing critical support to our summer program and making a positive impact on the lives of local kids in need—giving them a safe place to learn, stay active, and have fun.
October marked the Club’s first ever International Day of the Girl celebration! 40+ female community leaders joined the young girls of Alum Rock Clubhouse, where they engaged in one-on-one mentorship and created vision boards. Together, we were able to ignite the power in young women by providing them engaged mentors to uplift their achievements and help them envision their futures.
