Letter from the President On behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady, we are pleased to present our 2013 Annual Report. It was a remarkable year as we reached over 12,000 youth! This is the most ever by our organization, eclipsing last year’s totals. With the need ever growing, it has never been more important to provide quality programming for the children and youth of the community. We pride ourselves on being affordable and available for all children and work tirelessly to offer youth development programming that is second to none.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is so thankful for all of the support that donors, sponsors and those who have gone the extra step to name us in their estate and bequest plans. Our organization simply could not provide the quality staffing, leadership and programs if it were not for all of this support. We are proud that our growth has been steady, even during the most turbulent of economic times. This is crucial because it is our community’s families that truly feel the pain when the times are tough. It is for this reason that the Boys & Girls Club has worked very hard to expand services during these unfortunate times to assist families and help keep kids on track and safe.

Finally, none of this would be possible without the remarkable work of the Board of Directors, Auxiliary Board, volunteers and most importantly, the incredible staff that work with the youth every day. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is a consistent resource for so many who truly need us the most. To understand who we are and what we do, one only needs to know our purpose: To promote the social, educational, health, leadership and character development of youth during critical periods of their development.

Whether it is helping achieve better grades, providing a healthy meal, making a connection to caring adults or to just have fun, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady has been in the community for 77 years to help youth stay safe, be healthy and develop into productive citizens.

Although Victoria is always busy with her school work, sports teams, Club service, working to help pay her way through school and babysitting, she never fails to find time to help out in her community. She has worked on many community service projects including Toys for Tots Toy Drive, Global Youth Service Day, Thanksgiving Dinner, Music Ministry and serving as lead student coordinator for Concern for the Hungry Food Drive. Victoria participates annually in a Suicide Prevention Walk in honor of a fellow swim team member who died as a result of suicide.

Victoria is a strong student in spite of her demanding volunteer schedule. She has been accepted at The College of Saint Rose and is awaiting word from her first choice, Siena College. She will be majoring in Speech Pathology.

It should be noted that each day always began with a breakfast provided by the Northeast Regional Food Bank. Each camper also received lunch and an afternoon snack through the Summer Food Service Program. We are proud to say that Camp Lovejoy served more than 15,000 meals and snacks in 2013.

Boys & Girls Club Reaching Incredible Number of Kids School Programs Galore!

Boys & Girls Club Working to Curb Childhood Hunger in Schenectady In a City where more than half (50.8%) of the children are living in poverty, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady (BGCS) served thousands of meals in 2013 to help address this situation. Through a variety of feeding programs, BGCS served 28,116 meals and 52,857 snacks to our members at our clubhouses, in school programs and at Camp Lovejoy.

Craig Street, Yates Village and Steinmetz Homes Clubhouses provided snack and dinner daily through the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The Mont Pleasant Club is a Kids CafĂŠ site and received funding from the Regional Food Bank to serve snacks and dinners. The extended school day programs provided snacks from the school. Camp Lovejoy lunch and snack were funded by the NYS Summer Feeding Program. We also served breakfast to campers coming off the busses thanks to contributions from the Regional Food Bank.

Additionally, in 2013 BGCS received a nutrition grant from the New York State Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs funded by the State Legislature through the NYS Office of Children & Family Services (OCFS). This allowed us to enhance our feeding programs offering snacks at the Rotterdam Club, increasing the number of meals at the Mont Pleasant Club and offering more nutritional cooking classes. We were very excited to partner with the City Mission and its weekend backpack program for children at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. Thanks to the grant dollars from NYS, BGCS was able to sponsor weekend meals for families of two full 2nd grade classes, expanding this program to 60 additional students. Over 1,500 backpacks were filled for children in 2013!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady has had After-School Programs in the Schenectady City School District (SCSD) for over 20 years. However, in 2013 we had more programs in the SCSD than ever before. Through three different grants, we are now serving nine schools in the district. At Lincoln Elementary we are serving 160 students as part of the School Innovation Fund Grant, a Community School initiative. Five schools are funded under the 21st Century Community Learning Grants, Schenectady High School, Mont Pleasant Middle School, Van Corlear Elementary, Pleasant Valley Elementary and Martin Luther King Magnet. Over 250 students were served through these programs in 2013 with an anticipated 500 to be served in 2014. Another 150 students were served through Extended Day and Violence Prevention programs at Keane Elementary, Central Park International Magnet School and FDR Elementary.

Programs focus on educational enhancement and positive character development using tested effective national programs and local initiatives. Youth development activities and high yield learning activities include: leadership training, nutrition and health, math and English enrichment, character education, prevention education, art, music, dance, technology, team building, Service Learning projects and recreation, among others.

Clubhouses and Summer Programs Expanded in 2013 While we have greatly expanded our reach through school programs, our primary focus remained at our clubhouses where we had 3028 registered members in 2013. During the summer months we served many of our members and students from the school programs plus hundreds more at our programs at Camp Lovejoy (300), Summer Program at the Rotterdam Club (120), Quackenbush Park (890), Central Park (1075) and Steinmetz Park (40). Our summer programs provided youth with many high yield learning activities and enrichment programs to help prevent summer learning loss. With our clubhouses, school programs and summer programs, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady reached over 12,000 kids in 2013. In our 77 year history we have never reached more in any single year.

Not only has BGCS been providing meals for children, our Healthy Habits program taught members about the value of better nutrition. We have regularly introduced many fruits and vegetables, many new to our children, and have shown youth how to cook healthier meals using less fat and sodium.

Making better food choices will result in healthier futures for our members.

Capital Projects Drastically Improving the Club Experience for Kids!

With all of the amazing programs, initiatives and staggering amounts of children attending our sites daily, it has been critically important to be sure our facilities are safe and ready to handle the needs of the community. Plus, we believe that the kids deserve to have up-to-date, clean facilities that they can be proud to call their second home.

In 2013 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady built upon the momentum of 2012’s capital improvements to rehabilitate and even begin building new. The following are the major capital projects of 2013: • The Rotterdam Boys & Girls Club Swimming Pool ProjectIn 2011 the pool was ordered closed by an engineer due to structural hazards. After raising most of the dollars needed in 2012, the pool had the entire shell of the deep end replaced, added a new dehumidifying system & duct work, steel gutters, heaters, furnace, motor, paint and deck work. The new –look pool opened back up in September of 2013. Over 3,000 swimming lessons have occurred in this pool in the last 5 years!

The total cost of the rehab was $350,000.

•T he Mont Pleasant Boys & Girls Club Extreme Remodelthanks to a wonderful volunteer group called Giving4Ward led by Darlene Zeh and Laurie Michaels Cerrone, and a very generous $50,000 grant from the Lowe’s Charitable Education Foundation, the Mont Pleasant Clubhouse has a brand new look and feel which was unveiled in August 2013. Led by contractor United Building & Remodeling, Inc. owner and former club member Rich Regels, the club now has new stairs, sidewalk, landscaping, a homework area that was doubled in size, 20 new windows, a new gym floor, new entryway tile, office remodel and a new teen center. Dozens of volunteers and donors also contributed to make this special club beautiful and functional.

•T he Adeline W. Graham Lodge at Camp LovejoyConstruction began on a new 5,000 square foot Mess Hall/ Kitchen/Headquarters at camp. Thanks to very generous gifts from Addy Graham and Nan & Hugh Murphy, the project became a reality when the ground was broken in July 2013.

The facility will have a commercial kitchen, modern bathroom facilities, enough space to house 200 children at one time and a $5,000 square foot walk-out basement which will provide valuable program space and shelter during serious weather events. Probably the most eye-catching feature of the facility is a huge walk-around deck which has been entitled, “Maria’s Porch” by the Murphy’s. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony in June of 2014 during the Campership Campaign Victory Celebration.

Thanks to ingenuity and the desire to help youth succeed, Southern Vermont College and the Boys & Girls Club have partnered to create an opportunity of a lifetime for nine club members! These members, who never expected to be attending a four year college, are now at Southern Vermont College (SVC). As part of President Obama’s Call to Action initiative to help more low-income and minority students graduate from college, SVC was the first college to pilot what is being called the Pipleline, Mountaineer Scholars Project thanks, in large part, to Dr. Karen Gross, SVC President. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady (BGCS) was one of only three organizations to participate in this exciting initiative which began in 2011. This SVC Pipeline Project was designed to increase the number of vulnerable students attending four year colleges and graduating with a Bachelors Degree.

Students that are accepted into the program are surrounded by a “success” team consisting of SVC staff and students, Boys & Girls Club staff as well as other supports designed to help the students achieve their goals.

In the past three years the Boys & Girls Club has sent nine members (all the first in their families to attend a four-year college) to participate in the program. The Pipeline actually changed the admissions approach for Boys & Girls Club members. Students were recommended based on their drive to learn, persistency, flexibility, and leadership skills. In addition to these qualities, students were required to meet SAT and gradepoint average criteria which was developed by the college and took into account the barriers this group of students faced as young people primarily residing in distressed communities. By changing the approach, the college has given Boys & Girls Club members an opportunity of a lifetime.

SVC Mountaineer Scholars students are thriving on campus.

All students are involved in activities on campus outside the classroom including sports and leadership clubs. Jaleeza Johnson, a member of the 2013 cohort, is one of five students nominated for the First-Year Achievement Award. This award goes to the First-Year student who has made outstanding contributions to SVC both in and out of the classroom. Our first cohort of students will be graduating in May 2015. This will be a proud day for their relatives and the Boys & Girls Club.

Special Events Fall Fling & Auction Presented by Berkshire Bank November 22 • Glen Sanders Mansion The 2013 Fall Fling & Auction Presented by Berkshire Bank once again was a huge success and surpassed our expectations. With a packed house at Glen Sanders Mansion, the Boys & Girls Club was able to raise over $52,000. The highly competitive silent and live auctions were integral to the night’s success. The Boys & Girls Club would like to thank the Fall Fling Committee, the Auxiliary Board and all sponsors/donors. Our youth truly appreciate your continued commitment and support of our clubs. We hope to see you at the 2014 Fall Fling & Auction, set to take place at Glen Sanders Mansion on November 21.

The Gazette Presents A Taste of the Capital Region April 22 • The Rotterdam Boys & Girls Club For the third year in a row, A Taste of the Capital Region did not disappoint. The sold out crowd enjoyed a night of all you can eat delicacies and beverages. This event would not be possible without the participation and commitment of our chefs, both amateurs and professionals, who work tirelessly creating the delicious foods. Attendees were also treated to specialty drinks provided by Saratoga Eagle and Altamont Vineyard & Winery. Netting over $30,000, this event continues to grow and has claimed its stake as one of the most successful annual fundraisers for the Boys & Girls Club. Thank you again to the sponsors, committee and The Gazette for their dedication to this special night.

That recognizes and responds to the collective and individual needs of girls and boys.

Requires No Proof of Good Character...

We help guide boys and girls who may be in danger of acquiring, or who have already acquired, unacceptable habits and attitudes, as well as boys and girls of good character.

Guidance-Oriented...

We emphasize the positive values in the relationships members have with each other and with adult leaders, helping them make appropriate choices in their physical, educational, personal, social, emotional, vocational and spiritual lives.

All Boys & Girls Can Afford to Belong...

Membership dues are offered at $5-$10 per child with numerous scholarships offered throughout the year - No child is turned away based on inability to pay.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady provides support to young people that is significant but distinguishable from what they receive elsewhere – at home, school, religious groups, in other private agencies or through public recreation.

Triple Play, Gamesroom, Sports Leagues, Tae Kwon Do, Swim Team Our Members The Boys & Girls Club has 3,028 individual members and reaches over 12,000 youth annually in 20 sites, extensions, camps and city parks.

The Boys & Girls Club also manages five swimming pools in locations throughout the county and at Camp Lovejoy.
