Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady

Youth of Year Redal Ram, 2012/2013 Youth of the Year, has truly achieved great success in school, at the club and in the community. He is ranked second in his class of 626 students, has volunteered over 900 hours and is very dedicated to his mother and brother. Redal has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, overcoming a major obstacle in his life. When Redal was in the eighth grade his father left the family without notice or reason. To this day, Redal has no idea where he went and has not heard from him. Redal’s mother works very hard to support the family working seven days every other week. Redal works hard at home to help his mother and younger brother Redal Ram

while maintaining his excellent grades and volunteer work.

Redal considers the Boys & Girls Club his second home and he volunteers doing whatever is needed. So far this year he has completed 110 hours of volunteer work. Redal works countless hours during our basketball league keeping the scorebook and score clock, working the concession stand and giving skills clinics for every age group. He also leads activities on vacation days and helps with all special events and fundraisers. Redal is a positive influence among his peers and he is always helping younger members.

In addition to his volunteer work at the Club, Redal tutors students at the high school in Spanish and math. He is an active volunteer at his church helping with a number of community projects. Redal works with the youth of the church and will be a part of the youth mission team going to Ireland this summer.

Redal is the Salutatorian of his Schenectady High School class in the International Baccalaureate Program which consists of the most rigorous classes available in the school. He has taken and excelled in many courses for college credit. He plans to attend Dartmouth to study Mechanical Engineering.

Redal states “Through the Club I Iearned the importance of my best effort, the importance of having fun and many other life lessons. Now that I’m one of the older members, it is my job to help the younger members learn the same things.”

Mentoring Leads Teenagers to Academic Success

Mentoring has long been an important program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady. Most recently,

TEAM currently serves 54 students. With this funding from AT&T, TEAM will have the capacity to match an additional 50 students with mentors who can help them succeed in high school and their future.

Supplemented by part-time workers and volunteers. Our staff are trained to provide positive adult mentors and role models.

That recognizes and responds to the collective and individual needs of girls and boys.

Requires No Proof of Good Character...

We help guide boys and girls who may be in danger of acquiring, or who have already acquired, unacceptable habits and attitudes, as well as boys and girls of good character.

Guidance-Oriented...

We emphasize the positive values in the relationships members have with each other and with adult leaders, helping them make appropriate choices in their physical, educational, personal, social, emotional, vocational and spiritual lives.

All Boys & Girls Can Afford to Belong...

Membership dues are offered at $5-$10 per child with numerous scholarships offered throughout the year - No child is turned away based on inability to pay.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady provides support to young people that is significant but distinguishable from what they receive elsewhere – at home, school, religious groups, in other private agencies or through public recreation.

Triple Play, Gamesroom, Sports Leagues, Tae Kwon Do, Swim Team Our Members The Boys & Girls Club serves over 2,700 members and over 11,000 youth annually in 14 sites, extensions, camps and city parks.

Key Boys & Girls Club statistics for youth in our education programs: • 86% show grade improvement in a minimum of one core subject from quarter to quarter • 88% maintained consistent/excellent school attendance • 96% show on-time grade progression • 95% of seniors graduated high school (National Average is 65-70%)
