Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors, and our entire organization, we are happy to share our 2016-17 Annual Report to the Community for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor. This publication gives us a chance to express our tremendous gratitude for your support showcasing the foundations, local businesses and corporations, individuals and volunteers who have generously given time, services and financial resources. Without your dedicated support, BGCLAH would not be able to serve the thousands of youth who rely on us each day across the Harbor. For that, we say THANK YOU. From tutoring and college-readiness, to performing and fine arts, from video and music labs to science and robotics, from organized sports to time just to play and have fun – the Club provides space and opportunities for youth and young adults from kindergarten through high school to explore, learn and grow into participating members of our communities. As one of the oldest Boys & Girls Clubs in California, the Boys Club of San Pedro was established in 1937 by the San Pedro Civitan Club as local businessmen were desperate for positive alternatives for boys who were on the streets and negatively impacting their establishments. Since our inception, we have stayed true to our mission to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. NONE of this would be possible without the generosity of our individual donors, corporate sponsors, private foundations and support from our elected officials. This year we will be launching a comprehensive campaign to put the Club on solid footing with needed capital improvements, program and endowment support. Like in 1937, none of this will be possible without your support and we look forward to sharing our plans in the coming months. Throughout our 80th year, we will be celebrating our growth and successes. Please stay in touch on our website, social media and e-newsletter which highlights all of our activities. The Club looks nothing like it did 80 years ago, though. Even the Club of 20 years ago is a faint memory. Our mission remains to serve the kids who need us most. We would love to show you what goes on inside the Club, and welcome you to come for a visit if at all interested. We truly believe you will be as inspired as we are each and every day. Thank you!

Youth of the Year 2017 Melanie Fontelera

“I want to inspire the same level of dreams the club has provided me with.”

Melanie Fontelera been attending the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor for three years. She found solace there to escape struggles in her family and her community. With support from the Club, Melanie has excelled at school. As a senior at San Pedro High School, she was on the Principal’s Honor Roll. At our San Pedro Club, Melanie helps the staff wherever she can. She is president of the Keystone community service group and mentors younger

members. She has also served on Mayor Garcetti’s Youth Council. On December 1, 2016, Melanie was selected by a panel of judges at Mattel headquarters in El Segundo to represent the Los Angeles Harbor as Youth of the Year. In 2017, she represented our organization at regional Boys & Girls Clubs of

We are so proud of Melanie and look forward to supporting her as she goes on to college at the University of La Verne to fulfill her dreams of becoming an attorney.

Artistic Futures David’s story

“In the past five years, I have guided David into the world of fine arts, in which he has excelled.”

From the first day of class, David Garcia, 17yrs, old captivated me with his ability to draw and his approaches to art. He processes constructive criticism well and is always willing to go the extra mile in order to take his work to the highest level of formal and conceptual refinement. David has a very methodical creative process; he develops his concepts thoughtfully, he works with precision and purpose, and he shows incredibly astute attention to detail. In addition, I have been impressed by David’s ability during his senior year to play on the volleyball team at Banning High

School as an extracurricular activity and participate in the College Bound program here at the Club while still managing to attend weekly art sessions with me. David never settles for second best. He utilizes class time in a productive and determined manner. He arrives to class early and works late when the need arises. Due to this approach, David quickly has become a role model for his peers in the class. His work has been display on Arts Academy Showcases, ILWU, Bids for Kids and other special events. He also has participated in annual art

competitions such as the BGCA National Fine Arts Exhibit and the San Pedro Art Association, in which he won third place last year. In looking ahead to David’s college years, I am certain that he is ready to tackle the rigorous and challenging curriculum of the collegiate level. David will not take the path of least resistance; rather, he will push himself to continue to grow and develop as a creative thinker.

Athletic Futures Danny’s story

“Danny has found a second home with the Boys & Girls Club and its mentors, who work with him every day to motivate him to do his best”

Danny Hernandez started attending the BGCLAHWilmington Boys & Girls Club when he was in elementary school. During his first years, Danny was lost and did not take part in any programs. Because of his pride, he was hesitant to ask for any help with homework. The result was bad grades. He would try his best to avoid going into the Learning Center during Power Hour, when he would have to do homework. Now he is an eighth-grade student attending Wilmington Middle School and is on the right path to graduate

on stage and go on to high school. Danny has found a second home with the Boys & Girls Club and its mentors, who work with him every day to motivate him to do his best. With the help of the Club’s case managers and tutors, Danny has improved in his academics. He now goes to the Learning Center on a daily basis and stays there until he is finished with his homework. When he is struggling with a problem, he asks for help right away. Not only has his GPA gone up from 1.8 to a 3.17, but his involvement within the Club has also improved.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor Impact Report 2016/2017

He currently is part of College Bound, Passport to Manhood, and Running Club, and he participates in the seasonal sports the Club offers. Danny is a team player and now sets a great example to his peers. He encourages his friends to be part of tutoring and College Bound.

College Futures Chris’ story

“My Club is a gateway to my community, and my community is a gateway to a better world. It is a home ” – Chris Williamson

Little did I know that the very first time I would set foot in the Boys & Girls Club, my life would change forever. I was a little reluctant to join in activities, but I always came back to the Club every day because of the staff. The second semester of my freshman year, the site director, Sonia Espinosa, recommended me to a leadership group called Keystone. I sat in on one of the meetings, and immediately l was on board. I fell in love with giving back to my community. The void that was in me from missing out on contributing to a community at San Pedro was filled and overflowed from the sense of community that the Boys & Girls Club brought to me.

As a Keystoner, l was able to establish and sharpen my networking skills through beneficial seminars and workshops in which I absorbed all of the information. In April 2014, I was invited to attend the National Keystone Conference in Anaheim. When we first stepped off the bus, I was amazed by the impact a local Boys & Girls Club program could have. Clubs from all across the nation, and even some international Clubs, all had the chance to make an impact on their community just by believing in the power and influence of the Boys & Girls Club.

group, and I am still learning valuable skills every day. With guidance from excellent staff and countless hours spent at the Club, I’m headed on a path to success. I will strive to keep uniting my community in order to give back to my Club and show support, the same way the Club has supported me. The Boys & Girls Club has shaped who I am, and I do believe Great Futures Start Here.

Today, I am the president of my Club’s Keystone Elite Leadership

Volunteering Talents Dulce’s Story

“Dulce’s goal was to create and implement a STEM program for elementary members.” Dulce Perez began her volunteer service with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor to fulfill her requirement for volunteer hours in a Science Education class at her university. She wanted to gain experience working with youth within the Wilmington community and give back to the community she grew up in. Dulce’s school requirement allowed her to grow into one of our most dedicated volunteers, completing a total of 200 hours of volunteer service.

During the 2016-2017 school year, Dulce hosted two sessions of the program, along with additional days of tutoring. Her sessions gained popularity with the members, as they learned everything from volcanic eruptions to how to grow a plant from a bean. The hand-on science experiments Dulce was able to implement allowed for members to gain an interest in the STEM field and become passionate about the topics they were learning.

Her goal was to create and implement a STEM program for elementary members.

It wasn’t long before Dulce felt a sense of familiarity and comfort with her service. She

continued her service throughout the summer and well into the next school year. The staff and members know that they can rely on her as she continues to grow within the Club. Dulce hopes to one day use the skills she has gained at the Club to open her own center for community recreation and arts.
