Dear Friends,

This previous year was special for both myself and the organization in several ways. In 2015, I celebrated my 20th year as the executive director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor. I have been MOST fortunate to serve in this capacity of the organization I attended, thoroughly enjoyed and truly benefited from as a youth. In addition, as an organization, we also celebrated the 50th anniversary of our “new” San Pedro Clubhouse. I remember attending the 1965 dedication of our new Clubhouse as a San Pedro Club kid. Hundreds of us rejoiced as Executive Director Nick Trani and the Board of Directors unveiled a $400,000 state-of-the-art facility on 13th Street and Cabrillo. My friends and I were in awe of the remodeled gymnasium, library, games room and “senior room” for high school members. To this day, I am still grateful for the community coming together to create this special place for us to call our own. A lot has changed in 50 years, but we are still committed to serving the youth who need us most. Since 1965 there have been many changes to our San Pedro Club and programs as well as many upgrades to our Wilmington Club, Port of L.A. Club and Daniel’s Field recreation complex. We have grown to serve youth not only at these sites, but at our 10 after-school satellite sites on LAUSD campuses throughout the harbor area. We proudly serve the largest population of youth on a daily basis than any other nonprofit in our region. Watching each generation of Club kids walk through these doors and benefit from the many programs you will read about in your report makes me proud to still call myself a Club kid at heart. Just as it was 50 years ago, none of this would be possible without the support of the community, donors, volunteers, dedicated staff and everyone else who invests in the Club. Thank you once again for your commitment to the futures of “those who need us most.”

Mike Lansing, Executive Director

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, I am pleased to present this year’s Annual Report, and to offer my thanks to each and every individual and organization that supported our Club this year. Every dollar raised, every hour for which we have sought a volunteer, and every dollar spent was done with one thing in mind: serving kids in our communities. Our staff and leadership have created a truly incredible range of programs, and then offered those programs in a safe, welcoming, supportive — and fun — environment for our members. It may sound cliché to say “we couldn’t do this without you,” but there is nothing more true. Your interest in, and commitment to, our Clubs and our kids allow us to do what we do. We are proud of what goes on within our walls, and would love for you to see your support in action. Come to the Club and see our artists, scholars, athletes, scientists, mentors, leaders our kids - thriving at our sites. We are happy to show you around any day after school. It is such a privilege to be able to volunteer as a Board member for BGCLAH. Many, many thanks to our staff, management, donors and friends for creating these opportunities in the Harbor area. We continue to grow and thrive because of you. Thank you! Tamara Powers, President of the Board of Directors

College Bound

Launching Great Futures In 2002, less than half of our high school senior members graduated. Realizing that enough was enough, our College Bound pathway program was founded during the following school year to help prepare our members for future paths.

The program includes intensive case management, weekly workshops, mentoring, daily tutoring, classes for college credit, field trips to college campuses, and access to resources like laptops and online programs for ACT and SAT preparation.

Fulfilling Dreams In 2016, Daisy is finishing her freshman year at Pepperdine University, majoring in Psychology, with two fullride scholarships making this dream possible. This is thanks to her dedication throughout high school and the support she found at the Wilmington Boys & Girls Club and our College Bound program. Daisy became a Club member in her sophomore year and we found that she was a polite and dedicated student who was grateful for all that her parents could provide to her through their hard work. Unfortunately, affording the cost to attend a university seemed out of reach even though her GPA surpassed a 4.0 at Banning High School. Despite this Daisy focused on her studies and still made time to volunteer in our Keystone student leadership group and Jr. Staff program, mentoring younger members. She was active in our College Bound program, receiving individual, tailored guidance from our case managers while navigating scholarship and financial aid applications. When Daisy graduated in 2015 she did so as the winner of the Gates Millennium and Posse Foundation scholarships. Both full-ride scholarships allow her to attend Pepperdine without worrying about the cost of tuition, housing and other resources. All doors are now open for Daisy as she completes her degree and fulfills her dreams.

“

Overall I feel very blessed. I had a very great year being a part of the Boys & Girls Club.

Arts Academy

Creativity Flourishing

The Arts Academy opens our San Pedro Club and Wilmington Club doors on Saturdays for our most dedication young artists to receive more focused instruction beyond our after-school programs. Thanks to a challenge grant issued by the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation in 2015 and the generous support of the community, we earned a total of $750,000 to help fund the future of the Arts Academy.

11

It’s been awesome. I made a lot of friends. I went from basics to improving.

Founded in 2013, our Arts Academy offers several different program options for students to explore. Expert instruction is available to our youth, elementary through high school, in music, fine arts, film production, photography, video game design, 3D design and printing and audio recording.

Fine Arts student, Jennifer Arteaga, age 13 and painter of “Lone Serpent” seen below.

Lessons of Music Bianca Rivera

Bianca first picked up the bass guitar at our Wilmington Club when she was in 6th grade. Since then, Bianca has become one our most promising music students, joining our jazz band and rock band and performing regularly at community events in the harbor area and fundraising events for our organization. When our Arts Academy started in 2013, Bianca was one of our advanced students who benefited from the additional Saturday practice. Bianca’s development as a musician has helped her nurture important life skills like leadership, interpersonal communication and critical thinking. She has been an active member of our Keystone community service group while maintaining high grades at Banning High School Bianca recently graduated and will become a CSU Long Beach student in the Fall of 2016. She will major in Business Finance and plans to continue practicing music.

“

It feels amazing performing something you have been working on for months! I like being able to do that.

“

Those who have participated in music education can confirm the incredible effect in has on those involved. From picking up an instrument for the first time to performing live, many claim that music has had a profound effect on their lives.

STEM

Learning and Creating

The centers encourage learning through experiments and projects supported by expert volunteers from local refineries and STEM related businesses. Our San Pedro Club high school and middle school members have the opportunity to receive instruction in the use of higher level technology such as 3D printers, virtual reality headsets and the latest development software. They have produced a variety of technological advances including, virtual reality video games for the Oculus Rift headset as well as quadcopter drones they designed, 3D printed and programmed themselves.

13

“

We are given a task and then we have to solve a problem or build something from our imagination. 10th grader, Joey, pictured below with a quadcopter he designed, 3D printed and programmed.

“

In response to the increase in occupations in the fields of Science, Technology, Math and Engineering, we opened two STEM Learning Centers at our San Pedro Club and Wilmington Club during the 2014/2015 school year. This was made possible thanks to the Ahmanson Foundation, Ralph and Loraine Scriba, L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe, the S. Mark Taper Foundation and Raytheon.

Mastering STEM Mario Garcia

Mario from our San Pedro Club has mastered all of our STEM programs in our digital studio. From 3D modeling and printing to video game design and programming, he has become an experienced computer programmer and graphic design artist. His dedication to the programs has led him to help steer projects like designing, printing and programming a quadcopter drone and hosting a 3D printing demonstration for engineers from a local refinery. Mario joined the San Pedro Club during 9th grade. In the last four years he has been active in our STEM programs as well as the Arts Academy, Keystone community service group and worked for our STEAM summer camp, mentoring middle school members. With a great deal of experience in the field, Mario graduated from San Pedro High School in 2016. He will attend Long Beach City College in the Fall to pursue a career in computer science.

We’re not limited at all. We have a lot of resources we can use to create something great.

The goal of our STEM programs is to ultimately prepare our members for possible careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Athletics

Healthy Living and Sportsmanship Today we have expanded our athletics programming to include daily programs at our Clubhouses and school sites as well as a variety of sports leagues. In October 2014, we were honored to be visited by retired Lakers players, James Worthy and A.C. Green, and current Lakers forward, Julius Randle, for the opening of our refurbished gym floor at our Port of L.A. Club. The refurbishment was funded by the Lakers Youth Foundation after our organization received the most online votes in their YOU Grant Challenge. It is thanks to community support that our athletics programs continue to grow and succeed, from generous contributions to our parent volunteers supporting their child’s league.

15

The coaches motivate me to improve my game and help me reach my dreams of playing basketball. San Pedro Club member, Henry Arechiga, 9th grader.

When our organization was first founded in 1937, athletics was the only enrichment program we offered. Through athletics, our first Club members found fun and productive ways to stay safe and socialize after school.

This is a dream come true. This is definitely a very beautiful place that can and will change a lot of lives.

Community Service

Improving our Waterfront home Our mission has always been to help the youth we serve reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Many of our Club members demonstrate this in our community.

Our high school members taking the time out of their Thanksgiving break to package donated food items for Club families who are most in need.

From helping to beautify our streets by painting a utility box to supporting efforts to feed those less fortunate during the holidays to hosting a free community event, our Club members have found fun ways to contribute to their communities.

Our Club kids and staff painting a mural at the 1st Annual Family Fun Fitness Day in May 2015 at the Dana Strand public housing community in partnership with COPA by Providence Little Company of Mary.

17

Folklorico dance performance at our first annual community Dia de los Muertos celebration at the Wilmington Boys & Girls Club. This is the only free Dia de los Muertos celebration in Wilmington and was conceived and planned by our high school members.

Our San Pedro Club fine arts students were granted the opportunity to design and paint a utility box in their neighborhood as a beautification project.

Youth of the Year Diana Meza

Having recently acquired her phlebotomy license at Los Angeles Harbor College, Diana plans to transfer to a four- year university and use her medical experience to become a diagnostic medical sonographer. As a member of our Wilmington Club, Diana was involved in several programs including College Bound, Arts Academy and the Keystone community service group. She was also a part of Banning High School’s cheer team and maintained a high GPA. This would be a heavy load for any teen, but Diana accomplished all of this while working weekends to help support her family and dealing with her neighborhood’s high crime rate and turmoil within her family.

My molding happened because of a place that I love to call my second home, the Boys & Girls Club. The Club taught me what it is to feel and be empowered.

Whenever, Diana entered a room at the Club it immediately brightened. Her smile and inner joy brought optimism to every situation she joined or problem she tried to solve. This was one of the many reasons she was selected as our 2015 Youth of the Year.

We are so proud of all she has accomplished.
