Daniel Cooper, Chief Executive Officer

As we begin a new year in 2025, it is important to reflect on what we have achieved in 2024.

Our safety reached record low incidence levels as we saw a huge involvement across all businesses to deliver an incident-free workplace. BGC was rewarded with both State and National recognition for our programs. This is a huge reflection on the work done by so many individuals in each of our business units.

Last year, we saw strengthening markets for all our materials as the WA economy outperformed other states in Australia. The housing market remained extremely short and it is estimated that there is an under supply of approximately 25,000 homes. Unemployment fell throughout the year as the economy strengthened. Net migration into WA continued at all-time highs.

Our challenge to continue to add capacity to meet this demand was supported by the completion of our new Wangara concrete batch plant, quarry upgrade and first stage of our Blokstone plant. Multiple new truck and trailer additions and a new quarry mobile fleet ably assisted. Our trade labour shortage eased in housing and allowed us to complete over 230 homes per month to ensure as many homeowners as possible were in before Christmas.

On the business sale front, we completed the sale of Fibre Cement and Plasterboard to Etex. Our Commercial Construction team was sold to Atlas and more recently our Cement, Concrete, Quarries, Asphalt, Transport and Material Technology Centre businesses have signed a sale agreement with Cement Australia.

We have a huge program of work ahead of us this year as we will face even stronger demand in 2025.

BGC and Tianqi Sign Eco-Friendly Cement Deal

BGC will significantly cut embodied carbon emissions from a range of its building products under an agreement with Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia (TLEA), replacing imported, high-carbon clinker with aluminosilicate (known as TAS) from the Kwinana lithium hydroxide plant.

The announcement was made on 28 November by BGC CEO Daniel Cooper at BGC Cement’s Naval Base operations, where he was joined by BGC Director Sam Buckeridge, BGC Chair Jen Seabrook, TLEA CEO Raj Surendran and the Hon. David Michael MLA Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Ports; Road Safety; Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport.

The agreement was the culmination of more than five years of research, development, and collaboration with TLEA, including laboratory and field trials to test the pozzolanic (or binding) properties of TAS. Key benefits of the agreement include:

» Significant Emissions Reduction – Assuming a 25% blend with traditional cement, BGC’s TAS blend would reduce carbon emissions by approximately 24% compared to traditional cement as TAS has close to zero carbon

» Product Performance – BGC’s extensive research indicates that in optimised blends, TAS outperforms traditional cement in key performance areas such as later-age strength

» Infrastructure Investments – BGC is installing a drying plant and expanding its blending facility with new silos and weighbridges, creating jobs and boosting the Kwinana economy

» Product Expansion – TAS will initially be used in masonry products and concrete blocks, with plans to expand its use to general cement products, pending updates to Australian standards

This agreement strengthens BGC’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices and supports its long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

BGC CONCRETE

Wangara Plant Commences Operations

The BGC Concrete team is pleased to announce that after a 12-month build process, the Wangara Batch Plant has now commenced operations. The new plant will ‘plug the gap’ between the existing plants located at Bassendean and Quinns Rocks to deliver service requirements of clients in the northern corridor area.

BGC took possession of the brownfield site in October 2022 and, following a nine-month site preparation period, construction of the plant began in October 2023. The design of the new facility was based on the concepts and proven performance of the similarly designed Bassendean plant. The new plant is comprised of a significant cement tower and four silos capable of storing 500 tonnes of cement. The plant also affords the opportunity for expansion in the years ahead to incorporate new mixes, materials, truck sizes and the option to produce from two load-out points.

BGC’s safety protocols, including the BGC Way and the Life Saving Standards, were implemented throughout the construction. The team performed perfectly coordinating pneumatic, electrical and mechanical fit-outs, keeping safety at the forefront.

The new plant is an impressive result which will service Perth’s growing demand for ready mix concrete. Thank you to everyone in the team for your collaborative effort and teamwork approach.

BGC Transport’s New MAN Prime Movers

BGC Transport recently purchased a couple of new MAN prime movers. It is the first time they have purchased the German-manufactured vehicles and are excited to see what they can do.

In recent times, the bulk of the BGC Transport fleet has predominantly consisted of Volvo trucks but the transitioning to MAN trucks could present a significant financial saving as they look to increase their share of the Western Australian market.

The new trucks have all the modern conveniences and latest safety features that you would expect, making them extremely comfortable to drive for both short and long distances. With plenty of room in the bunk, a fridge and loads of storage, our drivers are excited to get in the new vehicles and have no problems going away for days at a time.

It could be the start of a great partnership with MAN moving forward.

Clinker Circuit Project Delivers Efficiencies

As part of their clinker circuit project, Fremantle Ports has installed a new 40-metre-high cement clinker dome and an upgraded covered conveyor network at the Kwinana Bulk Terminal, which is expected to deliver significant efficiency benefits to BGC.

The clinker storage dome was built by firstly constructing a concrete ring beam, then inflating an air form membrane and spraying a layer of foam before finally installing steel reinforcing and applying shotcreting to the inside of the membrane.

The 40,000-tonne capacity dome replaces aged cargo-handling assets with limited storage, enabling a continuous, high-capacity discharge process and improving BGC Cement’s ability to manage shipments more effectively.

The ~$55 million project also includes the replacement and extension of the existing conveyor system, as well as a modern truck loadout facility, equipped with four load chutes and a weighbridge positioned directly under them. The existing 5,000-tonne capacity system, which has

slow out-loading due to aged equipment, will be replaced with a more efficient setup. Enhanced environmental safeguards, including improved dust control and enclosed load-outs, align with BGC’s sustainability commitments.

The new system is expected to more than double the discharge rate, enabling faster, uninterrupted unloading and reducing port congestion. This will improve berth availability, reduce vessel time at the port, and should lead to reduced demurrage costs.

The upgrade will also decrease the need for roundthe-clock truck unloading, as materials can be transported from the dome to BGC during daylight hours, reducing the need for night shift operations. The use of newer equipment is expected to lower unplanned downtime and breakdowns.

Scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2025, BGC Cement anticipates significant improvements in logistical efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and overall operational capabilities, positioning the company for sustainable growth.

Clay Recycling Initiative: Transforming Brick Waste into New Bricks

Midland Brick is trialling a new initiative that reflects their commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management. In collaboration with Instant Waste, they have launched a clay brick recycling program designed to transform construction waste into valuable new materials.

The recycling program works in the following way:

» Dedicated Recycling Bins - Builders and site supervisors order the specialised Instant Waste bin exclusively for clay brick waste for their construction site to collect and separate it from other materials.

» Educational Signage - Midland Brick provides complimentary signage and an informative poster designed to be prominently displayed in front of or on the bin, helping to educate site staff on the importance of depositing only clay brick waste. The poster also highlights the environmental benefits and positive impact of the recycling process.

» Efficient Collection - Once the bin is full or the bricklaying work is complete, builders request collection from Instant Waste. If additional bins are needed, they can be replaced as required.

» Recycling Process - Instant Waste crushes and processes the brick waste, which is then supplied to Midland Brick where it is mixed with raw clay and used to manufacture new bricks.

This innovative scheme not only reduces construction waste but also contributes to a more sustainable

construction industry. By recycling clay brick waste, Midland Brick can minimise environmental impact and support the circular economy.

Midland Brick is encouraging all builders, site supervisors, and bricklayers to participate in this trial. The lessons learned will be used to grow the trial into a sustainable program. Industry cooperation is essential to making this program successful and driving positive change in our industry.

Together, we can build a greener future, one brick at a time.

Leaders in focus Luke Berkhout

I have worked for BGC Quarries for over 23-years, during which I have had the pleasure of holding and advancing through many roles. My journey with the company has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to gain a wealth of experience and knowledge in various aspects of the industry.

I initially joined BGC in 2001, commencing as a casual Labourer. I soon had the opportunity to learn how to run the processing plant, becoming a Plant/ Machine Operator in 2006. It was in this role that I acquired the skills that launched my career in heavy machinery operation. I was trained to operate a dump truck, water cart, wheel loader, excavator and pugmill, as well as learnt how to load-off the ROM that feeds into the crusher and load road trucks with product. I also gained experience in running screening plants and trained in the basics of the weighbridge. With the ability to operate all the machines on site, I embraced the responsibility of becoming the site trainer and assessor, all while completing my Cert IV in Training and Assessment.

In 2020, I progressed into the role of Leading Hand to assist with supervising the plant and pit operations. I also spent some time in the weighbridge, learning more if ever I needed to fill in. In 2023, I was promoted to Quarry Supervisor, which lead me into my current role as Assistant Quarry Manager in April 2024.

During my time in a leadership role, there have been several challenges along the way. When navigating difficult decisions or seeking practical advice, I have been fortunate enough to receive guidance from other great team leaders who have acted as mentors. I am also always needing to learn new things quickly; however the challenge this brings is enjoyable to me.

Throughout my tenure at BGC Quarries, there have been many highlights. I have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience of learning to operate various machines on site. I have also enjoyed working together and collaborating with my team to achieve our strategy and goals. In addition, I have valued the numerous opportunities presented to me to expand my knowledge and skillset.

There are several projects I am excited to see come to fruition at the Quarry, including the upgrades, modifications and new installations to the tertiary plant and seeing the increased capacity output these will create. I am also looking forward to the joining of the two existing pits. In the future, I want to keep growing my skills, with plans to complete my restricted Quarry Manager certification in the next month.

BGC Quarries Upgrades Crushing Plant

The highly anticipated $3 million ‘Direct Feed Upgrade’ of BGC Quarries’ tertiary crushing plant has been successfully completed and commissioned, achieving a 20-25% increase in production at this stage.

The upgrade involved the installation of a direct feed to bypass the current screens and conveyors, and modification of the tunnel exit and the storage bin top platform. In addition, a new transfer tower and conveyor was installed to carry feed-in material straight into the storage bin. The redirection of material will relieve the conveyors and screen of 450tph, increasing screening efficiency, reducing the chances of belt damage or spillage, and enabling a higher feed-in rate (550 – 600tph) to maintain crusher feed material in the storage bin.

There are more changes to the plant that will be considered over the next few months to optimise the entire process and ensure the plant operates at peak efficiency. Some of these modifications include changing screen panel aperture sizes and/or positions on screen towers 02 and 03, blanking and un-blanking screen panels on screen 01 to control the amount of finer material in the surge, and crusher adjustments.

Thank you to Brett Mulcahy, Maintenance Manager at BGC Quarries, for his dedication to the research, planning, development and oversight of the project from start to finish. We also extend our gratitude to the entire team for their invaluable support and assistance throughout the project.

BGC Cement Invests in Sustainability with New High-Capacity Dryer

BGC Cement is enhancing operations at its Naval Base Cement Plant with a major upgrade, involving a new high-capacity supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) dryer and an expanded blending facility featuring two new silos and weighbridges. The new dryer, which will replace an ageing rotary model, is designed to process a variety of SCMs, including traditional low-carbon materials like blast furnace slag and alternative low-carbon options.

With increased drying and milling throughout, this advanced dryer will significantly boost plant capacity, enabling us to better meet the high-volume needs of our mining and concrete customers and paving the way for future growth in SCM-based products.

BGC’s Material Technology Centre (MTC) will leverage its research and development expertise to maximise the dryer’s potential by testing and refining new SCMs. MTC’s capabilities ensures the business stays at the forefront of sustainable materials innovation, developing high-quality, lowcarbon products that meet market demands and environmental standards.

The project will be rolled out in two phases over the next two years. Phase one, which is currently underway, includes the installation of the SCM dryer, site remediation, and foundational work, with commissioning expected by February 2026. Phase two will expand the blending plant, adding storage and distribution capacity, with completion expected by October 2026.

This investment reflects BGC Cement’s proactive approach to sustainable construction materials, ensuring we’re well-prepared to meet evolving industry needs and environmental standards.

Cementing the Future for Coolbellup Cats

In June 2024, BGC Cement signed a three-year agreement to become the major sponsor of the Coolbellup Cats, a local Aussie Rules football club with a rich Indigenous heritage. The collaboration was facilitated by Danny Ford OAM, a specialist in indigenous engagement and cultural awareness.

Derek Houareau, BGC Cement’s General Manager, says that the sponsorship was a natural fit, due not only to the club’s close proximity to its Naval Base site but also its strong alignment with the company’s reconciliation goals.

“BGC Cement is proud to be sponsoring the Coolbellup Football Club. It marks a significant step in our progress towards reconciliation and community engagement, as outlined in BGC’s Reflect RAP. It also emphasises our commitment to fostering greater understanding, inclusiveness, and respect across cultures,” said Mr Houareau.

Club President Adrian Pinkerton has witnessed firsthand the benefits of increased financial support, confirming that BGC’s sponsorship enables their teams to physically get on the ground each week.

“Having BGC Cement come on board as a sponsor has meant we can spend less time worrying about the bills and more time planning for the future of the club, our players and the community,” said Mr Pinkerton.

Being a small club, Coolbellup has historically only been able to support three senior playing teams, including one female team. It has never had the finances or infrastructure to support a youth team.

“Knowing we have BGC’s support for another few years has enabled us to consider the prospect of forming a Colts junior team, something we haven’t been able to do since 2008,” says Mr Pinkerton.

BGC Cement is optimistic about the long-term impact of this partnership. Its commitment goes beyond sponsorship, reflecting a broader initiative to cultivate a more diverse and balanced workforce. This dedication to increasing participation and engagement ensures that everyone at the Coolbellup Football Club will have greater opportunities to contribute, develop, and thrive within their club and local community.

BGC’s Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was launched in 2022 and represents BGC’s first formal step towards sustainably and strategically taking meaningful action to advance Australia’s reconciliation journey.
