Nestled in the heart of the vibrant coastal city of Fremantle, just a short walk from the cappuccino strip, restaurants and train station, the East Village at Knutsford initiative has transformed the area into a thriving hub of creativity and sustainability. Let’s delve into how East Village will positively impact the lives of both visitors and residents.
In line with the global push for environmental consciousness, East Village prioritised sustainability in its development plans. Life is all about learning and for this reason, every aspect of East Village has been carefully designed to provide valuable lessons on embracing a more sustainable way of living.
Effortlessly embracing the principles of One Planet Living, East Village at Knutsford will deliver a connected community of 36 energy efficient homes featuring a micro grid supply network for water and power derived from 100% renewable sources – the first of its kind in WA. In addition, passive solar design will provide several benefits, with household energy costs expected to be reduced by up to 50%.
The waterwise initiatives that will be performed at East Village include stormwater recycling for plants, rainwater use in hot water systems, toilets and washing machines, plus a strata-owned bore for irrigation.
The village will also boast many green streetscapes which in turn will offer a range of passive climate-responsible design benefits. The architecturally designed landscaping that will be seen includes native garden beds, edible produce, and rain gardens for collecting and treating stormwater.

The East Village at Knutsford initiative has transformed the area into a thriving hub of creativity and sustainability.
Nature lovers Emilee and Chris have finally achieved their dream of owning a family home in Aveley after seven years of renting in the area. Nestled in a quiet street with untouched bushland across the road, they feel incredibly lucky to raise their family in a location that will never be developed.
Seeking a practical and lowmaintenance home with ample storage space and a timeless minimalist design, Emilee and Chris took advantage of government grants for new builds and started their building journey. With BGC Home, the couple were able to bring their vision to life, making upgrades to the kitchen and ensuite, and even adding a powder room.
The couple's favourite part of the process was prestart, where they made all their design choices and saw their dream home take shape. They also enjoyed watching their new family home being built from the ground up. "We lived 5 minutes away from our block, so we would visit or drive by most days. The excitement was real whenever we would notice something had been done," Emilee said. Now settled in their new home, Emilee and Chris cherish every moment. From being greeted by the sight of wild kangaroos and peacocks right at their front door to cosying up in their very own theatre room, the young family couldn’t be happier.
“We just love spending time at home now. We feel so lucky and blessed this is actually our home,” said Emilee. Although their build had delays due to the current contraints of the building industry, Emilee and Chris feel now that the wait was definitely worth it. While there are still landscaping projects and a pool installation to look forward to, they're just happy to be home.

After purchasing a house and land package at just 21 years old, Chari has settled into her dream home in the northern suburbs of Bullsbrook.
As a chef, Chari’s decision to build her own home came from a desire for independence and stability. She wanted a space that was truly hers, where she wouldn't have to worry about leasing arrangements or contributing to someone else's mortgage. With the help of HomeStart, Chari was able to choose the perfect block of land in the same area she grew up in.

Traditional design styles were left behind and new materials and styles made homes look fresh, futuristic and exciting.
Architects favoured clean lines and flat roofs whilst embracing geometric shapes, often incorporating circular and triangular motifs. Bold colours were used to accent walls and furniture, and the use of asymmetry was popular, with buildings featuring off-centre entrances and window placements.
The economic boom and cheaper building technology meant Australians could afford bigger homes with second bathrooms and additional bedrooms. Homes were designed with an L-shaped or U-shaped floor plan, separating bedrooms and bathrooms from living areas. Tell us a little background about yourself and how you got into architecture and design.
My name is Sarandy Karagiannis and I'm the design director at Sarandis Design. From a young age, I was always fascinated by the art of design and how spaces interact with each other. As a result of this fascination, I have had the privilege of working on a wide variety of projects, each presenting its own distinct challenges and opportunities.
Where does your passion for art and design come from/where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration from a multitude of sources, but I am particularly drawn to the past. I enjoy examining the work of previous designers, observing how they tackled certain ideas and problems, and considering how we can improve upon their solutions with the benefit of hindsight.
What is your favourite element of this home?
Definitely the split levels. I love how each level defines a separate space. For example, the living area is on the lowest level which connects to the alfresco and the kid's beds are on their own level, away from the entertaining spaces.
What was the biggest challenge when designing this home?
The biggest challenge was definitely the site's natural characteristics.
Being both a narrow lot and having a 3.5m slope, from front to back.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone in the process of looking to build their own home?
Don't rush. Understand that there is a process and that the design phase is super important in the overall scheme of the project. Remember, it is a lot cheaper to move a wall on paper than it is on site.
What, in your opinion, does the future of architecture and design look like?
The future of architectural design will really need to consider solar passive design and sustainability. As designers we will need to consider where north is, where our windows are placed and where our living rooms are positioned so that we can achieve a good solar passive design.

This dish comes from Western Australian chef, Caroline Taylor. Caroline likes to have fun with cooking, keeping it light-hearted, experimental and local.
SAAG
500g free-range chicken thigh, cube dice 2cm square
300g warrigal greens or spinach
2 cloves garlic, minced about 1 tbsp
2 tbsp minced fresh ginger
1 large onion chopped
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 ½ tsp ground coriander
1 ½ tsp garam masala
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp cardamom
¼ tsp chilli powder
1 tbsp tomato paste
½ cup water
½ cup plain yoghurt
RAITA
1 cup natural yoghurt
½ continental cucumber, deseeded +
finely diced
1 tsp lemon myrtle flakes
1 tsp sea salt
1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large non-stick frypan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, and ginger and saute until softened, about 4 to 5 minutes, stirring regularly.
2. Over medium-low heat, add the salt, coriander, garam masala, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, and chilli powder, and stir until fragrant. Stir tomato paste into the spices in the pan, creating a thick spiced sauce, about 1 minute.
3. Add the spinach and water, and gently stir to combine as the frypan will be very full. Cover and raise the heat to medium-high, allowing the spinach to start to wilt. Occasionally remove the lid, stir, and then cover again until most of the spinach has begun to wilt, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the lid and finish stirring the spinach until it is completely wilted but still bright green, another minute.
4. Transfer spinach mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Taste and adjust salt and spice if necessary.
5. Meanwhile, wipe the frypan clean with a paper towel, return it to medium-high heat, and add another tablespoon of oil. When the oil is hot, add the cubed chicken pieces, sprinkle salt over the top to season, and cook until almost completely cooked through, about 5 to 7 minutes.
6. Pour the spinach mixture back over the chicken, using a rubber spatula to get every last bit out of the blender, and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes to allow the flavours to meld and the chicken to finish cooking.
7. Make raita by mixing cucumber, lemon myrtle and sea salt in a bowl and set aside. You can make this ahead of time to get the full effect of the lemon myrtle.
8. Stir the yoghurt through the saag and serve immediately with basmati rice and/or naan bread and top with a dessert spoon of raita.
