Focusing on economic revitalization, addressing food insecurity, combating natural disasters, and fostering community connections, Back Bay Park is a sustainable food port project. What started as a research analysis of East Biloxi‘s Back Bay, turned into a resilient rebuild project with goals of fostering the community needs. This building represents only a portion of the many possibilities of the Back Bay Community.

Initial research of East Biloxi, through historic documents, site visits, interviews with locals, and basic demographic mapping, it was evident the city lacked a stong economy. This led to poor community relationships and developmental needs.

The organic building shape and open ground level is designed to resist the strong winds and flooding that often effect coastal cities. Large bio-swales located around the typology provide additional flooding control while allowing nice public spaces to the community and residents.

Planning for another Hurricane Katrina was important for the residents of Biloxi, the diagrams below help visualize the long lasting effects of a floodable ground level. In the case that another storm surge as high as 23’ tall strikes, the building would not only survive but recover to normal.

about the project

University Park is a pre-cast concrete structure parking garage intended to be used by the Starkville community and employes of Mississippi State’s Innovation Hub located on site. Along with parking, this design includes a light well, retail spaces, and a pedestrian green roof.

My role included creating schedules, organizing meetings, overseeing the construction of our mock-up model, and assisting in design decisions from conceptual to presentation.

My role in this group project was Project Manager. I was tasked with organizing the collaborative efforts between the Architecture and Building Construction Science students.

University Park’s design process begain with the design and understanding of precast concrete panels. Our group aimed to provide a facade that was not only welcoming from the street but also enjoyable from the Innovation Hub on site.

about the project

The 901 is a mixed-use residential development consisting of two parts, residential and commercial.

This building has study areas, outdoor spaces, and commercial spaces. There are 42 residential units in the building, both ADA and 2-story apartments.

The 1st and 2nd Floor of The 901 is meant for complete public access, providing study spaces for the surrounding community. The residential lobby is a private sector allowing residents to feel safe at all times.

All 3 snap shots to the left come from the typical 2-Story Unit found in the 901.

This unit was design with a goal to provide residents with natural light throughout and tall ceilings, both promoting this sense of comfort.

Additionaly, the 2 steps up to the elevated living area creates a sense of seperation between the entry, kitchen, and living room.

Pictured above are snap shots of a 2-Story Unit with a 180 degree view of Memphis. This linear floor plan creates unique spaces perfect for a city lifestyle.

Pictured below is a typical ADA Unit with 2 units located on every floor. The open floor plan allows for flexability and accessability to accommodate the needs of the space depending on the resident.

The goal of this renovation is to create a space where visitors feel welcome, where residents feel at home, and where the history of Mound Bayou can be put on display in a dignified, significant manor. This final design of the Mound Bayou Bank Renovation and Redesign Project is one I believe fits perfectly with not only the existing building but also the history of such a beautiful town.

Mound Bayou Museum was designed to create spaces that not only meet the needs of the program, but also provide an expeirence in of itself, through materiality, light, and spacial relationships.

The existing Mound Bayou Bank held so much history and character, so designig it to be the main exihibit space allowed for great exhibition potential.

The facade is designed to mimic the existing building, creating a sense of symmetry, while also providing a clear break between new and old. The brick breaking away into this opaque glass, then clear glass, can be viewed historicly as the history of Mound Bayou from the past to the present.
