CROSSWORDS

A Calming Collection of Brain-Boosting Puzzles to Help You Relax & Unwind

To those seeking a moment of calm, enjoy these brain-boosting, relaxing puzzles!

Puzzle solutions on page 150.

WELCOME

This collection of crosswords has been carefully crafted to be fun, mentally stimulating, and just challenging enough to be satisfying! You can make a great addition to your self-care ritual and unwind in style with the 130 delightful puzzles included. But this book is more than just a simple way to pass the time. With its eye-catching design, legible print, and fun bonus content, it provides the relaxed and casual vibe of flipping through a favorite magazine.

The crosswords in this book feature a wide variety of themes, including gardening, cooking, pop culture, hobbies, and more. You’ll love puzzling out how different words intersect as you fill up the grid letter by letter—and you’re certain to learn some new vocab or be inspired to look something interesting up when you’ve completed each puzzle!

Each puzzle comes with a corresponding fun fact or tip to enhance the experience. Plus, there are a few mini articles to read while taking a break between puzzles, featuring friendly advice, DIYs, and a focus on self-care. And, of course, a solution for every puzzle is provided so you’re never frustrated.

Puzzling for Self-Care

This book is designed to become a mindful, personal puzzling moment in your daily life. To help you create a nurturing experience, here are some tips for how to turn puzzling from a simple activity into a true part of your self-care mindset.

Make space.

Seek out a cozy space for puzzling. Find a comfy chair or sofa that gives you back support but isn’t too stiff. It might be nice to fetch a soft blanket or pillow too! If possible, look for a spot that has minimal clutter so that you can decompress without stressing about the area around you. It can be difficult to unwind when your space feels unruly. This is your “me time,” so the chores can wait! You can also puzzle away from home—just choose a place without too much noise or distraction, like a quiet coffee shop or a secluded park bench.

Get comfy.

Pull out a pair of fuzzy socks and your most comfortable duds for ultimate relaxation. When your body feels restricted by tight or uncomfortable fabrics, it can be hard to focus on winding down. Every part of your experience matters, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. If you have a favorite pen, pencil, or marker that brings you joy, use it!

Feed your body.

Grab a tasty beverage to sip on while you’re going through the book. Coffee, tea, soda, or a cocktail—it’s totally up to you! And enjoy a snack too if you’re hungry. Make sure you set yourself up with a coaster, napkin, straw, or any other little accessories you might need so that once you start puzzling, you won’t have to interrupt yourself.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
—ANNE LAMOTT

Breathe.

Now that you’ve found a place to sit and you’re feeling prepared, you’re almost ready to dive into the book. Before doing so, take a few deep breaths. Notice how your mind and body feel as you do this. If you’re stressed out, keep taking deep breaths until you feel your heart rate calm.

Pick your puzzle.

Flip through the whole book before you get busy on one of the puzzles. Take a mental note of which ones are especially intriguing to you, which ones look easy, and which ones look more advanced. If you’re feeling burnt out after a long day or week, try choosing a puzzle on the simpler side to ease you into the process. If it’s been a great day and you’re looking for a more mentally stimulating experience, try a more challenging puzzle!

Don’t take it too seriously. These puzzles are meant to ease your mind while gently exercising it. They aren’t meant to get you frustrated trying to think of an answer. And they cover such a wide range of topics that you won’t know every answer to every puzzle! If you find yourself getting stumped, simply put the puzzle aside and tackle a new one, or check an answer in the back—there’s no shame in that.

Take your time.

It’s better to complete just a few puzzles a day, or even one single puzzle, instead of flying through them one after the other. Even one puzzle a day can improve your overall mood and set the tone for your day, or ease you into the rest of your evening activities. Really take your time and soak in the happy, welcoming vibes of each page. Doodle in the margins if you feel inspired! Make it a moment that is meaningful to you.

LET’S PUZZLE

You’ll find 130 unique crossword puzzles, fun facts and tips, and six articles in this section of the book. Feel free to complete the puzzles in any order you like! Choose the puzzle that suits your mood.

How to Create a Custom Skincare Routine

Skincare routines don’t have to be complicated, and they can be a big part of your self-care ritual!

It’s important to figure out what your skin needs so you can choose the right products and keep it simple. A skincare routine with two or three steps is perfectly sufficient, but you can expand if you’d like. Here are some tips to find the right products for you.

A gentle cleanser and a rich moisturizer are the best basics for your skin. No matter if your skin is dry, oily, or somewhere in between, moisturizer is crucial. It doesn’t just hydrate your skin—it protects its barrier too! After finding a reliable cleanser and moisturizer, you can start thinking about goals you have for your skin. For instance, do you want more brightness, improved texture, or less dryness?

Serums are a great way to supplement your routine to achieve goals like these. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide are all reliable ingredients to look for in serums. Make sure to buy products that are specific to your goals, and stick to introducing just one new product at a time so you don’t overwhelm your skin and so you can assess the new product’s effects.

Exfoliation is another big part of taking care of your skin. There are masks and scrubs you can buy to do this, or you can make your own. After exfoliating, your skin will feel so smooth and luscious, but make sure you don’t overdo it! You only need to exfoliate one to three times a week.

Now that you have a starting point for which products to buy, let’s talk about the relaxing and rejuvenating nature of a skincare regimen. Taking care of your skin can help you begin and end your days on a good note. Splashing cool water on your face in the morning while you’re cleansing can help wake you up, and with your bright, nourished skin, you’ll feel more confident starting your day. After your routine at night, you can go to sleep feeling fresh, soft, and ready for a good night’s rest. And occasionally applying a face mask and sitting down with your favorite movie or book can give you some much-needed me time. Sometimes, you won’t feel like doing your routine, but you’ll always be glad you did. So go get your skin glowing and refreshed!

Making Coffee Work for You

Isn’t coffee everyone’s favorite morning beverage? It can perk you up on a busy day and serve as a little treat on more-relaxed, casual days.

Whether you’re having a big cleaning session at home, putting in long hours at work, or lounging in your leggings or sweats on the weekend, coffee is always a go-to pick-me-up! Even the ritual of crafting your morning brew or making some extra time to head to your favorite coffee shop can be therapeutic and set a positive mood for the rest of your day. Nothing beats that first sip!

But are there any benefits to your coffee obsession? The short answer is yes: Black coffee contains lots of antioxidants, which lower the risk of many diseases, like liver disease, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that it’s one of the most antioxidant-rich items you can eat or drink!

However, the biggest part of what makes or breaks the benefits of your coffee habit is what you add to your coffee. Extra milk or creamer, artificial sweeteners, and lots of sugar lessen how much your coffee can do for you. That’s not to say you shouldn’t indulge in your favorite large frappe once in a while, but, as with all foods and drinks, moderation is key.

If you make your coffee at home, whether it’s a classic latte or a sweet coffee smoothie, you choose what goes into it.

The good news? You can have the best of both worlds! Using naturally sweet ingredients to flavor your coffee is a perfect way to keep it healthy and tasty. Vanilla extract, bananas, cinnamon, and cocoa powder are all great options for making your coffee extra flavorful while retaining its nutrition.

Want to craft a delicious morning beverage that satisfies your sweet-tooth and saves you some money? Here’s a quick and simple recipe for a yummy coffee smoothie that will not only help you reap the benefits of your coffee but also add to the nutritional value of your morning drink!

Tips for Fabulous Festivities

The holidays are a festive, cheerful time that’s supposed to be joyful for everyone involved, but there always seems to be so much going on!

It’s easy to get weighed down by all the activities, planning, and stress that come with the season. Here are a few ideas for keeping your holidays fun and low stress. First, set realistic expectations for your holiday season. As the colder months are approaching, think about how you envision the holidays you plan to celebrate. We all wish for everything to be perfect, but remember that things don’t always go according to plan; try to be flexible. If something goes wrong or doesn’t work out, focus on what is working and on spending quality time with the people around you.

Part of setting realistic expectations (and avoiding unnecessary stress) is setting a budget and sticking to it. This may sound challenging, but don’t worry; there are lots of ways to keep costs down. DIYs are a fantastic, budget-friendly option for gifting—homemade baked goods are always a hit! Feel free to pair homemade gifts with small store-bought gifts if that’s what works for you. Wrapping paper can be expensive and feel wasteful, since it usually ends up in the garbage

anyway. So get creative and repurpose things like newspaper, fabric, or cloth bags as wrapping. If you don’t have anything to repurpose, a large roll of plain brown paper is an inexpensive option, and you can decorate it yourself!

Another way to keep stress levels down is to accept help if you are offered it. Part of the joy of the holiday season is togetherness, after all. If you let your friends and family help, you can bond while working together, and everyone will feel more connected to the celebration. You’ll be glad to have the help, get things done quicker, and have someone to chat with while you do it! As you’re working on wrapping, baking, party prep, decorating, or whatever tasks you have to complete, you could also put on a comforting movie that makes you happy. Choose something you don’t have to pay close attention to so you’re not distracted by it.

Take a breath, keep your friends and family close, and know that it will all turn out all right. Have a happy holiday!

Tips for Setting Up Your Own Home Bar

Curating a home bar and learning to sling your own drinks can be super fun and rewarding!

You can learn how different drinks are made, add a new, exciting flair to a space in your home, and be able to make any kinds of drinks you and your friends love! Before you know it, you’ll be crafting your very own delicious cocktails.

There are a bunch of different ways to set up and style a home bar, but the simplest way is to buy a bar cart. Choose one that suits your taste and blends in with the space you’ll put it in. It shouldn’t be too much of a spectacle in the room, but rather a classy statement piece. Most bar carts find their home in a dining room or living room, but think outside the box! Many of them have wheels for a reason— they don’t have to stay where they’re stored. For instance, if you store yours in your kitchen, you can wheel it out to the living room when you’re hosting a party.

There are a few things you’ll need to get started, but you don’t have to buy them all at once. A cocktail shaker set and a few types of glassware are a good place to kick off. Take your time and look at all

your options so you have a collection of high-quality items that match your style and that will last.

Of course, you’ll also need to stock the bar with spirits! The basics include vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey (or nonalcoholic versions of these). It’s important to also think about extras you might need too. Vermouth, bitters, and simple syrup are some versatile add-ons. Most cocktails include simple syrup, and bitters and vermouth can be used in more cocktails than you’d think.

One last tip for your home bar is to invest in a cocktail recipe book. You’ll want to find one that has a variety of drinks that showcase different flavor profiles and use different liquors, but also make sure it has lots of drinks that you like! You could also think about how it might look on your bar cart—if you choose to display it, it could be a lovely accent piece that’s also functional. Now that you have some ideas, enjoy your new home bar and get shaking some cocktails!

How to Log On and Tune In Mindfully

Technology can be extremely useful. The internet and the thousands of applications out there can be inspiring, foster connections, and serve as tools for self-expression.

But it can sometimes be tricky to wade through the negativity and manage screen time in order to find balance and best support yourself. Here are some tips to help you ensure that the internet and all its possibilities remain a positive part of your life.

Every time you’re about to log on, you should first tune into your mood. Make sure you’re going in with a positive mindset. If you are feeling down on yourself, tired, or ill, be wary of scrolling on social media. It’s one thing to log on to seek out some comedy skits to lift your mood, and it’s quite another to log on when you’re feeling low to scroll past dozens of beautiful influencers showing off their happy lives. If you’re not in the right headspace, think twice about logging on.

As you’re scrolling, don’t let the internet become a place you go to compare yourself to others or inadvertently soak up negativity. You’ll inevitably come into contact with these things sometimes, but remember that what people post online are the parts of their life or their art that they want you to see. Very few people are

posting about their shortcomings and mistakes—you’re only seeing the staged and edited versions. Try to give yourself regular “reality checks.”

If you ever find yourself browsing online for too long, start setting a time limit. A good place to start is about an hour per day. Much more than that can not only sour your mood but strain your eyes. Be extra conscious of time limits if your day job already involves lots of hours staring at a computer screen—sorry, but your body and brain don’t get a free pass just because you get paid to be online!

It’s also important to really think about whether or not the things you’re doing online are truly helping and inspiring you. Sometimes we think we’re being inspired, but we’re really just soaking up a sense of insecurity or allowing thoughts like “I could never make that” or “I wish I had time to do that” take center stage. It may take you a while to find spaces and creators that lift you up rather than put you down.

With these guidelines in place, you’re one step closer to making the internet work for you!

Creating a Stress-Free Space at Home

Everyone needs a place they can get some well-earned me time after long, busy days.

This could be your bedroom, a corner of your living room, or a spot in another part of your house. It’s important for your mental health to designate at least one space in your home as a stress-free zone. This means you don’t work in that space—preferably not even to do small tasks like paying bills. You don’t want any negative or stressful energy in there! Here are some recommendations for how to set up a space that will encourage relaxation. Some of these could be part of a permanent setup, and others can be adjustments you make to a space temporarily in order to turn it into a quiet haven for one evening or day.

First, choose a color palette that’s calming to you. Usually that’s neutrals or cool colors, like purple, green, and blue, but everyone perceives color a little differently. The only colors to avoid are highly saturated colors, especially on walls. Super-bright colors can be energizing, but for a stress-free space, they’re probably not the best choice.

Make sure to give the room or area you choose a nice flow—no awkward

furniture placements, crowding, or uncontained clutter. Add features and accents that relate to your interests and hobbies. For example, you could have a book nook, a knitting nook, or a drawing nook; or your space could be multipurpose. Get creative with it!

When choosing or rearranging furniture, make comfort your top priority. This is a space you want to feel free to relax in in any way you like, so give yourself options. Make sure you have a sofa, chair, or even a daybed in the room. Keep your slippers and a basket of throw blankets nearby for ultimate coziness.

Use candles, incense, or a diffuser with your favorite scent to give the space a comforting aroma. Be sure that the lighting is on the softer side and pick a calming lightbulb tone. It’s always smart to use windows to your advantage too! If you happen to have a view of nature, you could place furniture to enjoy the view. Simply gazing upon nature soothes the soul and reduces stress.

Enjoy unwinding in your new stress-free space!
