A Message from the Vice Chancellor Dear Friends, As we look back and gratefully remember the work and dedication of many people who have enabled Bethlehem University to grow into what it is today, we look forward to the 50th jubilee in 2023. Throughout the challenging adventure of our Strategic Planning, we have come to realize that if an institution and its people are to be dynamic and relevant, it must be a reflective community, always in the process of discerning its strengths and weaknesses, of seeking ever better ways of carrying out its mission, of dreaming about and envisaging what it wishes to become. This is what we have been doing in developing our Strategic Plan that will take us through until the jubilee in 2023. The Lasallian values of service, faith, and community continue to lead and inspire our journey as we grow and develop Bethlehem University into an excellent teaching and research institution, and one informed by that research. In this issue of our Bethlehem University magazine, you will find a few of the many signs of hope in which our faculty, staff, and students are involved – activities that your support makes possible. You will read about the University’s most recent news, a number of student activities, and feature stories about the tercentenary of the De La Salle Christian Brothers and about the Athletic Department. The reason we exist is to educate our students. Part of this education involves our many extracurricular activities that take place on campus. We highlighted in this issue the Art Club, a community outreach program in our Education Faculty, through which our students hold activities for orphans in Bethlehem. We also highlight the Women’s Volleyball Team who won this year’s inter-university championship. We encourage our students to join our athletic teams and we are working to provide better facilities for this by expanding our fitness center which will be part of the new Georgette Salameh Center. We are grateful for the help we are receiving for this project.

Celebrating 300 Years of De La Salle On 7 April 2019, Bethlehem University faculty, staff, and the De La Salle Christian Brothers commemorated the 300th anniversary of the death of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the Patron Saint of all teachers. The worldwide tercentenary campaign is titled “#300LaSalle: One Heart; One Commitment; One Life. At Mass in the Chapel of the Divine Child, presided by Father Peter DuBrul, a faculty member for more than 40 years, the De La Salle Christian Brothers publicly renewed their vows.

director for 10 years. Since 2009, he has been working as a Development Associate at the Bethlehem University Foundation in Beltsville, MD. Brother Henry joined the Faculty of Science in 2003 and was a founder of the computer science program which became the software engineering department in 2017. Brother Henry returned to the US and celebrated his 40th jubilee in July.

Bethlehem University would like to offer its sincere congratulations to these Brothers on their jubilees. Thanks to the work of many on campus, Bethlehem University honors the heritage and contributes to promoting the legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle through its mission of providing quality higher education to the people of Palestine.

The Brothers have administered Bethlehem University since its inception in 1973. Brother Brendan Fitzgerald, Brother Joseph Neary, and Brother Anthony O'Connor were the founding brothers who served in Bethlehem. The first University Vice Chancellor, Brother Joseph Loewenstein who arrived at the University in 1975, celebrated his 75th jubilee as a Brother on 28 July 2019. Brother Joe, who now lives in Lincroft, New Jersey, USA, was recognized and acknowledged for his years of committed service to youth. Women’s Athletic Teams Are Winners When the referee blew the final whistle, excitement filled the sports court.

Championship. The women’s basketball and football teams came third in their championships.

Bethlehem University Women’s Team won the Palestinian Universities Women’s Volleyball Championship.

Awards for championship winners were presented at Birzeit University in a ceremony organized by the Palestinian University Sports Federation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in July. More than 500 students from Palestinian universities attended.

The on-campus win against ten universities from across the West Bank was just one success as Bethlehem University women athletes have shone throughout this season. “It feels great to win the championship,” said Sulaf Moussa, a student majoring in Business Administration who joined the volleyball team in December 2018.

“We remain exceptionally proud of our student-athletes for the outstanding efforts they continue to put forth in the classroom, while also succeeding in their competitions,” Ms. Mousa said.

“The final game was a bit tough, but the harmony among our team and the support we got from our coach were the reasons we won.”

“Their devotion to excellence is a source of pride not only for the Athletic Department but for the entire University.”

Ms. Samar Mousa, the Athletic Department Director, said that “supporting the women’s athletic teams at the University grew out of our strong belief in the importance of empowering women in Palestinian society.” The University’s athletic teams performed very well in the academic year 2018-2019 despite the challenge of not having enough space to train. In the Palestinian Universities Women’s Badminton Championship, student Amal Salah came second, and Nadeen Khalil came second in the Women’s Karate

The role of sports on campus is to stimulate the students and provide them with leadership and teamwork skills that will help them lead their local communities and build the future Palestinian state. The University’s gym allows all members of the university community to exercise. However, there is currently not enough space for the large number of students participating in the athletic programs on campus. But, thanks to the generosity of our friends and donors, Bethlehem University is looking to expand its facilities to allow these teams the proper space to train. One such project is the new Georgette Salameh Center (see page 6).

UNIVERSITY MATTERS

Beyond Text As a partner with the European Union's Erasmus Plus project called Beyond Text, Bethlehem University aims to lead the way in Palestine in increasing access to arts-based research across academic disciplines. Addressing the lack of specialized training available to Palestinian educators, the Beyond Text project designs and investigates ways to support educators from all disciplines with high-quality, practice-based research by integrating the arts into their teaching methodologies. In addition to working with a group of students from the Faculty of Education at Bethlehem University, Dr. Hala al-Yamani, Dr. Hala Nassar, Dr. Fadel AlSawayfeh, and Dr. Abdelfattah Abusrour held two pre-text drama workshops for a youth group from Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society in the Aida Refugee Camp. They also held an international pre-text drama workshop for a group of European postgraduate students and educators from the UK, Finland, Estonia, and Spain. Bethlehem University team’s particular approach examined refugees as a local and global phenomenon. Its aim was to engage students in classroom activities transferring the reading beyond the pages of a text into a deeper understanding of personal narratives and memories of refugees. Such an

the opportunity for dialogue to evolve organically through interactions with others, deepening the participants’ understanding of complex issues, concepts, and topics.

Utilizing this methodology, Bethlehem University team and its partners at Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society focused on preparing a pre-text drama based on the 1962 novella “Men in the Sun” by Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani. The dramatic process allowed students to immerse in collaborative investigation and problem-solving in an imaginary world. Participants had the opportunity to explore the main characters, the challenges, and the context.

The diverse ages, nationalities, and life experiences of the students gave an enriching dimension to the project, infusing it with curiosity, joy, and professionalism, and helping the team to develop a better understanding of the field of arts-based research.

The students’ active participation in the creative drama process provided

Bethlehem University team will continue working to disseminate the Beyond Text project’s arts-based research approach, and plans to share the pre-text drama technique with colleagues at Bethlehem University and other Palestinian universities and community centers.

GRADUATE PROFILE

Artificial Intelligence Championship Winner Winning the Inspiration Award and People’s Choice Award at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Family Challenge in California, USA, was an unforgettable experience. It was a challenge that I went through with my eldest daughter, Selina. Selina and I, Rana Khair, created an app called “My Drawings Speak Up” that analyzes children’s drawings for signs of bullying. The algorithm was created using hand-drawn images from children as well as drawings from trained psychologists. The program can recommend whether a parent should seek professional support for their child or not. The path for this success was not easy. We had to go through fatigue, failure, and despair but our strong determination helped us overcome the challenges and win the competition.

My motto is inspired by the famous quotation: In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. I am a mother of four and have a supportive husband who encouraged me the whole way. I graduated from the Faculty of Science at Bethlehem University in 2009 with an honors degree in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Business Administration. Thanks to Bethlehem University, I was able to develop the skills required to build a project from scratch and to market it properly. This had a major effect on me, and set me on the path to win the artificial intelligence competition. I was inspired by the professors whose lectures were of great impact in instilling ambition and perseverance in me. It was also my motivation to participate in competitions and extracurricular activities.

For eight years now, I have been working with the Ministry of Education as a technology teacher. I participated with the ministry in many competitions they held for students and teachers some of which were directly related to my field. Most of the competitions were about creating solutions to the problems we face in our society, and increased my experiences in many other fields. Bethlehem University seeks to inspire and empower students to be successful in their careers. This success story of Rana Khair showcases how Bethlehem University graduates are self-motivated lifelong learners who are empowered to enhance their own professional, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills.

For the Love of Education: Art Club Supports Orphans

"I eagerly await Fridays so I can play with the children and put smiles on their faces,” Christine Handal said.

Children are given the chance to interact with others their own age as well as university students.

Christine, a third-year student majoring in Primary Level Education, took part in the Faculty of Education’s Art Club during the 2019 Spring semester.

The club encourages students to develop positive attitudes towards volunteering. It also helps them professionally by providing valuable experience in working with children and connecting with the community.

The Art Club was established in 2014 by students in the Faculty of Education who underwent their practical training at the Crèche – Holy Family Children's Home in Bethlehem. These students wanted to provide children at the orphanage with activities that allowed them to engage with the community. The club arranges a weekly program for the children of orphanages around Bethlehem. The program includes painting, drama, music, short stories, and educational games for children aged four to nine years.

12

BETHLEHEM UNIVERSITY

“Volunteering with the club helped me better understand children and their needs,” Christine said. “They are so sensitive that a piece of paper different than their friends’ could make them sad, and a simple game might make them happy.” Dean of the Faculty of Education Dr. Hala Rashed said, “Many university students described being part of the club as lifechanging.

“It is a great opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of many young children, and students often learn far more than they imagined they would.” The mission of the Art Club is to encourage and empower Bethlehem University students to use their creative skills, enhance their portfolios, and gain more confidence while, at the same time, integrating the children into the community. Basheer Alnamora, a third-year education student, says he was trying to change the difficult reality these children live through with the activities he prepared for the club. He still remembers their laughter which encouraged him to develop simple ways and methods to identify their abilities. This club is one way that Bethlehem University supports the local community and its institutions.

Preserving Folk Art

A Stepping Stone to a New World

“Dancing Dabke is the only thing that helps me get out of the depression of passing checkpoints,” said Nour Bakri a fourth-year student from Jerusalem who is majoring in Business Administration.

“The Institute of Hotel Management is the place to fulfill my academic goals and cultivate my talent,” Francis Abu Akleh says.

“When I hear the sound of music, I disengage from the whole world; I start to move my legs without even realizing it.” Nour is one of more than 20 students who gather twice a week to practice the unique combinations of traditional dance and music. Majdal group, which was established in 2009, is made up of Bethlehem University students dedicated to learning and performing the folkloric dance dabke.

The group performs at University events and in local festivals. Mrs. Mai Jaber, Assistant to the Dean of Students, who is responsible for the group, said, “We aim to preserve and promote the Palestinian artistic and cultural identity.” “The music and dance have universal appeal. Part of Majdal group’s purpose is to connect with the community at large and share the joy of dabke.” The group was recently funded by the New Zealand Embassy in Cairo to buy new uniforms, which are shown in the above and below photos.

“I plan to start my own business after graduation and my university studies have already set me on the right path.” Francis is a second-year student majoring in Hotel Management through the Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism at Bethlehem University. As one of many talented students, Francis says the University is a stepping stone for him to a world of new experiences. His passion to make desserts since he was 10 years old led him to study at Bethlehem University to earn a degree that would help him to step into the market. The Institute is increasingly nurturing students’ creativity through its programs in different areas including culinary arts, baking, and pastry.

Gifts to Honor the Daniel James Hoult Memorial Scholarship “In 2017 our family of six children, their spouses and parents went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. As parents we wanted them to experience the place where Jesus lived. We corresponded with the Vice Chancellor Brother Peter Bray, who grew up in the same town as us in rural New Zealand, and was the school principal of the De La Salle Secondary College that our boys went to. The highlight was having two students share with us details of their life in an occupied country, and the struggles they endured to just exist as students. They had a profound effect on us, even to the point of tears. After we left, the question our family members asked was, “How can we help these people?” We had tragically lost our son/grandson, Daniel, to suicide two years previous. The feelings and grief of the loss were still raw. The suggestion to help a Palestinian through the University was suggested. This would result in something worthwhile coming out of such a loss and would continue to live on into the future through the recipient. Hence The Daniel James Hoult Scholarship was born. We decided the recipient would be a male of similar age, a Christian, and studying nursing. Daniel’s mother is a psychiatric nurse. This scholarship is now entering its third year.” By: The Bradford Family

Life of a Loved One Bishop Morlino Educational Fund The Most Reverend Robert Morlino was the Bishop of the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin for many years. He was a member of the North Central USA Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (NCL). Unfortunately, Bishop Morlino passed to his reward in November 2018. In 2001, one of the Madison Section members of the NCL, Sir Eugene Croisant, made a gift to the North Central Lieutenancy to be used for the education of Palestinian students at Bethlehem University in the name of Bishop Morlino. As the Trustees of the fund, the Executive Committee of the North Central Lieutenancy decided to direct the use of the fund for the education of nursing students at Bethlehem University. Since then, the University has been trusted to select three nursing students for scholarships in honor of the late Bishop Morlino.

By: Members of the North Central USA Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (NCL)

“The Christian & Irving Teaching Scholarship is named in honor of my wife’s father, a respected teacher and craftsman, and my father Irving, who was also a teacher. Christian died in the year 1980 aged 76 and Irving died in the year 1979 aged 84. The Emilie & Marian Nursing Endowed Scholarship is in honor of our mothers. Both Emilie and Marian were faithful, respected, loving and examples of caring throughout their lives. It is by their example of caring that we wanted to honor their remembrance with a caring scholarship like Nursing. Emilie died 1999 aged 95 and Marian died 1989 aged 93. Although most jobs and professions contribute to the welfare of society in one way or another, we thought that a teaching scholarship and a caring scholarship like nursing were directly relevant to any society. We are happy to support the young Christian/Catholic students from the Holy Land who choose to study at Bethlehem University.” By: Mr. James Linton & Dr. Hildegard Emilie Charles

GOING ABROAD

BETHLEHEM UNIVERSITY

Exchange Programs The Office of the External Academic Relations at Bethlehem University currently administers eight exchange programs that have been approved for funding by the EU Erasmus Plus program. These agreements allowed fifteen of our students and nineteen faculty and staff members to travel abroad during the 2018-2019 academic year. For the Spring 2019 semester, students Juliana Daboub, Rabee Oueinh, Hala Salameh, Raghad Zaghayer, Nina Kort, and Kate Khair studied at Lund University in Sweden. Rayan Abu Srour and Tanseem Syori spent their semester at Handong Global University in Korea; Neveen Muti studied at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey; and Samar Qawasmi studied at the University of Deusto, Spain. These opportunities to study abroad expand the horizons of Bethlehem University students and allow them to be exposed to new cultures. Being immersed in a foreign culture, living among locals and learning about their traditions promotes acceptance of others and enriches our students with a deeper understanding of the world.

Occupational Therapy Five Bethlehem University occupational therapy students recently returned from a summer course at the University of Southern California. They underwent a rigorous selection process to be accepted and represented Bethlehem University and Palestine. The students acquired funding through a year-long campaign - from selling cupcakes to applying for scholarships from organizations like ANERA which generously sponsored their flights. In total, $17,500 was raised through a fundraising campaign that was coordinated by Suzy Daher, Chair of the Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy.
