Dear Friends,

Rabbi’s Message

One of the verses from the high holidays that I treasure is in Neilah, the final service of Yom Kippur. We say:

Open the gate for us at the time of closing.

This verse holds so much of what the High Holidays are: a plea, a hope, an insistence that even as the gates begin to close, the light fades, and time runs short, there is still a way in. A way back. A way forward. A way toward each other and God.

Our Nigun Halev Service is a smaller prayer experience shaped by our traditional liturgy, which will be brought to life through participatory singing.

After a summer that has brought so much pain in the world, especially in Israel, and so much uncertainty closer to home, we need that gate to open to our prayers more than ever. We need spaces of reflection, honesty, beauty, and hope. We need community. We need depth. We need each other.

We are trying to build out our yamim noraim offerings to facilitate just that.

On Selichot, we will welcome guest artist Chana Raskin, whose voice conveys the yearning, strength, and grace of her hasidic roots. The service will be backed by professional musicians, as we hope to create a soaring experience to kick off our journey into the new year.

Our Sanctuary Service will be familiar and anchoring, with a traditional liturgy, Cantor Gaby’s beautiful davening, and the sense of reverence and rootedness that helps so many of us mark this sacred time.

Our Contemplative Service will offer a quieter path of spaciousness and introspection, drawing on silence, singing, meditation, and reflective prayer.

We’re excited to offer expansive High Holiday youth programming for all ages. Each day includes age-appropriate services followed by engaging activities led by our staff and professionals. Services include: a Tots Service (newborn–age 4), Mini Minyan (grades K–2), a new Junior Minyan (grades 3–5), a Middle School Service, and a Teen Service. On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, we’ll also offer a Family Service for children in grades K–5 and their parents. Highlights of our youth activities include Main Stages’ High Holidays show, a teen chesed project, a high holiday-themed escape room for middle schoolers, and more.

During Sukkot, we’ll gather for a chance to be in each other’s company for a community Shabbat meal in the sukkah, among other Sukkot and Simchat Torah programming.

All of these offerings share one intention: to open the gates. Gates of prayer. Gates of meaning. Gates of compassion. Gates of teshuvah, return. However you arrive, with questions or certainty, with grief or joy, with an open heart or a sense of being stuck, there is a way in. There is a place for you. We are holding the door open for each one of you. Let’s walk through it together.

President’s Message

The September Beth El Bulletin always means lots of news about the High Holidays, and this year is no exception. We have a detailed schedule of services, reminders about registration, and your email box has been (and will continue to be) flooded with information. With all of this, I wanted to step back and think about what is special about Beth El’s High Holiday experience, whether this is your first time spending the holidays in our community or your 50th year of doing so.

As a Shul President, the easiest way to get inspiration for the Bulletin articles is to ask the rabbis for help. So, I asked each of our rabbis what they look forward to each year, and this is what I heard:

with our name tags!). All of these come together for me in the part of the Neilah service where we open the ark and members of the community come individually and in groups for a few moments of quiet prayer in front of the ark, but do so year after year, as part of the ritual of this day.

Wishing you all a year of good health, peace, and meaning, and looking forward to building upon these special High Holiday experiences and creating

Rabbi Schuck: Gathering for tashlich with our family and dogs and friends to catch up together informally.

Rabbi Sitkin: Having some space to look inward and sit in silence, surrounded by community during our Contemplative Service.

Rabbi Bedo: Cantor Gaby and Rabbi Schuck singing b’sefer chayim.

Wow! To me this epitomizes the different aspects of what makes the holidays at Beth El so special. For me, there are spiritual and ritual moments during the service that I look forward to every year: the shofar blasts, the inspiring sermons, and the high holiday melodies. Some of these evoke memories of High Holidays since my childhood and others are unique to Beth El. There are also quiet moments, moments to look inward, reflect, and find peace and space. And, there is the joy I find in coming together as a community – reflected in the hallway conversations with old friends and in catching up with and connecting with fellow congregants (all made easier

This year’s High Holidays shofar design, like last year’s pomegranate, was created by our Marketing Director, Margarita Korol. Using our Beth El colors, she connected the imagery of the shofar, a timeless call to renewal and awakening, with the unique identity of our community. You will see this design throughout our flyers, emails, and website, a reminder that the High Holidays are both ancient and deeply ours.

Shoresh Halev

Center for Jewish Music at Beth El

I am thrilled to share my recent experience performing Frank London’s work, commissioned by Shoresh Halev, in Krakow Poland as part of the Jewish Culture Festival.

As you may remember, Frank wrote these wonderful klezmer songs for Simchat Torah as part of our Shirei Neshama series, where we commission artists to write and perform new works around each of the Jewish holidays. For these songs, I worked with Frank to create a dance song from each of the traditional Psalms of the Day, along with a heartbreaking, plaintive elegy to October 7. This past June, we had an opportunity to perform this suite of 8 songs in the very lands where Klezmer music had begun.

The Jewish Culture Festival is a highly acclaimed, international festival of Jewish music, which has taken place for 34 years, in Krakow, Poland, home to one of the largest pre-war Jewish populations of Poland. Krakow is a gorgeous medieval town, with ancient cobblestone streets, and home to seven renowned historic synagogues. The Jewish Culture Festival attracts people from all over the world, and is supported by Poles of all faiths.

This was an emotional journey for me, visiting the lands where millions of Jews had lived for centuries, and then were wiped

out by the Nazis during the Holocaust. My tears flowed as I felt the spirits of our brethren and ancestors hovering over the country. The music provided an opportunity for healing from the unspeakable wounds and murderous crimes of the past.

Klezmer music, born in the shtetls of Poland and Ukraine, created anew here at Shoresh Halev Center for Jewish Music at Beth El, returned properly and poetically to its source! For me, this took on the nature of a deeply spiritual experience, when time and space collapses - past, present and future come together, and here and there lose their distinction - embodied in the deep presence of music.

I look forward to sharing sacred time together in the weeks and months to come. Join us for Selichot on Saturday, September 13th at 8:15pm with our special guest, Chana Raskin, and for the High Holidays, with a new song-filled service, and opportunities for contemplation and rejuvenation, for the exciting year ahead. With love, gratitude and wishes for peace and a sweet new year,

Israel 360 | Staying Connected with our Israeli Family

Israel 360 ended this past program year on May 29th with “In Their Own Words: American & Israeli Teens in Conversation.” A panel of American high school and college students alongside Israeli shinshinim (youth ambassadors working with synagogues and schools across Westchester) shared their experiences and perspectives about America and Israel. It was inspiring to hear how each of them— whether preparing for college, navigating the complexities of campus life, or completing a year of service—expressed deep commitment to Israel and to Judaism in their own ways. The evening offered a mix of voices and left many of us kvelling with pride. Our shinishinim, all of whom were about to return home after a year sharing their love of Israel with our youth, expressed a deep appreciation and understanding of American Jewry. These young people reflected the best in our community and gave us great hope for the future. This year, we are joined by Noa Dorani, who wil spend the year in Westchester, adding an Israeli perspective in our Nursery School and Religious School classrooms. Say hello when you see her at Beth El!

My name is Noa Dorani, I am 17.5 years old. I live in Moshav "Be'er Tuvia" located in the southern part of Israel. A Moshav is a small village where people live and farm.

I come from a close family and they have always been a big part of who I am today. I have a twin sister Lihi , and together we are the eldest children in the family. I also have a younger brother Harel, just a year younger than me. My bond with my twin sister is incredibly deep— we can truly feel each other. We grew up like a triplet, and this connecKon is a meaningful anchor in my life.

Of course, May also brought the pain of Yom Hazikaron and the joy of Yom Ha’atzmaut and the moving ceremony and joyous celebration that our clergy and staff worked tirelessly to make happen. We are all so fortunate to be part

My mom Sarit and my dad Yaniv are very supporKve and play an important role in my life.

I am very close to my extended family as well and love spending Kme with them especially during the holidays.

of a community that cares so deeply about Israel and actively engages with Israel in all its dimensions.

We have been busy planning for this upcoming year, and we are excited to announce that our first event will be on November 6th at 7:30pm with Professor Dan BenDavid, President of The Shoresh Institution. Shoresh is an independent, non-partisan, socioeconomic policy research center dedicated to identifying the source and scope of Israel’s internal, root (shoresh, in Hebrew) challenges that constitute an existential threat to the future of the State of Israel. It promises to be an enlightening evening highlighting issues of grave concern to all who care about the future of Israel. We are finalizing plans for our additional programs, so stay tuned for more details to come!

At school, I major in English, MathemaKcs, Chemistry, and a combined track of Economics and Sociology, all at the highest level (5 units).

I have been acKve in the youth movement "HaTnu’a HaHadasha" since 4th grade, parKcipaKng in all acKviKes and trips. Since 10th grade, I have also been a counselor. In addiKon, I volunteer with Magen David Adom (MDA). I began in 9th grade with a year-long training course, and since 10th grade I have been volunteering on shiXs as a cerKfied first responder.

I have always loved helping others, and in the future, I hope to pursue a career in medicine.

I’m a very social person and I always enjoy being around people. Every now and then, my friends and I like to go on outdoor trips or just hang out together and make a “pakal” – a casual Israeli-style campfire meal, usually with coffee, tea, snacks, and good music.

Growing up in the south of Israel hasn’t always been easy, but I deeply love this country and the region I was raised in. I feel very connected to the Jewish tradiKon. I am very excited to meet the Westchester community.

As the High Holidays approach, our prayers invite us to stand with open hearts before God and one another, naming our faults and seeking repair. In this shiur, we will explore the theological, emotional, and psychological dimensions of the Jewish concepts of sin and confession. Together we will study the Ashamnu prayer and Al Cheit confessional, unpacking their language, structure, and meaning. By examining the spiritual visions and texts of these prayers, participants will be able to approach them with greater understanding and personal resonance, enriching their prayer experience and making the yamim noraim (Days of Awe) more meaningful.

An update on the refugee family from Afghanistan being resettled by a group of Beth El and WRT congregants

The Torah calls us to “love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Deut. 10:19), a refrain echoed throughout our tradition. This is not only a reminder, but a call to respond to others’ displacement with empathy rooted in our own long history of wandering. The incredible and hard work of the refugee resettlement committee— welcoming and supporting this Afghan family—is a living expression of our core value: transforming the memory of our exile into acts of chesed.

Having arrived to the U.S. on April 3rd of this year, with little to no English and having fled their home country, this family of five has made great progress towards becoming integrated into the local community. With the help of the volunteers, they have moved into permanent housing in White Plains, begun English classes, enrolled the kids in local public schools and learned how to navigate the basics of daily life here. Trips to the grocery store, taking public transportation, discovering local parks, meeting others in the community, all seemed overwhelmingly daunting at first and now are tasks they independently and routinely perform. They each have their green cards, their SS cards, their NY State IDs and two have even passed their tests and received their Driver’s License permits. There is much more learning and adapting to come, but a great deal has been accomplished in 4 months.

Members of our shul and others have responded to the family’s needs quite impressively, with both their time and financial support. The furnishings of their apartment were largely provided

Chesed Security

The Security Committee continues its work to ensure our synagogue remains both a warm, welcoming space and a safe one. As part of these efforts, we recently conducted a fire drill at the end of Shabbat services. The drill went smoothly and provided us with helpful insights into our preparedness. We are grateful to our community for participating with care and calm, and we will continue to take thoughtful steps that balance

by purchases off an Amazon wishlist. Many pieces of clothing and houseware items have been donated. Transportation to appointments for doctors, dentists and other services has been provided by volunteers. English practice sessions over Zoom and in person are on-going. It is quite gratifying to see how our Jewish values of “welcoming the stranger” and “tikkun olam” are actually lived by our congregants.

One last update relates to their employment situation. Thanks to a referral to an open-minded employer, the 22 year old son has accepted an offer for a full-time job beginning this month. As a server in a dining hall at a local private school, his earnings will go a long way toward establishing the family’s financial independence. While this takes some pressure off, a job for the father is still needed and being sought. For what his English lacks, his motivation and willingness to work more than compensates. His previous roles have included work in security while leading a team of five guards, construction, property maintenance, and landscaping. He is able and willing to work in cleaning, maintenance, stocking, events setup, building porter work, and other roles of physical labor. While the language barrier currently would make customer-facing work more challenging, he is ready to try anything where he can follow directions with the help of Google Translate or shadowing others to get the hang of the job.

If anyone has ideas where he may be given a chance, please reach out and a meeting can be arranged.

To join this effort, please contact Blair Selber at blairselber@gmail.com.

Beth El is looking for volunteers to help lead our efforts to expand Beth El’s involvement in the following areas: social action, chesed, and community building/ social programming.

Keruv | Accessibility & Inclusion @ Beth El

A Season of Return

A central theme of the approaching High Holidays is “t’shuva.” Often translated as repentance, it derives from the Hebrew word for “return,” and on Rosh Hashanah much of our community does return to be together at Beth El. It is part of what makes the holiday so special for me. I love seeing old and new friends, my extended family and theirs, grown children with their children, all gathered for the holiday. Of course, the services are livestreamed for those who truly can’t make it, but there is nothing like the experience of being there in person.

Toward that end, the Keruv committee is intent on removing any barriers that may interfere with someone being able to worship together with us in our sacred space. Again this year, we will have a quiet room set aside for anyone who may need to be away from the crowd and bustle. We have large print High Holiday prayer books (machzors) available as well as hearing amplification devices. An area will be set aside in the main sanctuary for people in wheelchairs or using walkers, and their companions. We have three white stands that will be available in the main sanctuary on which to rest a machzor if you lack the strength to hold this heavy book. For help locating any of the above, please ask an usher for assistance.

Please let us know in advance if you have any special needs for the high holidays such as wheelchair seating so we can be sure to address your needs. Email info@bethelnr.org or call the main office.

If we have not made you feel welcome in the past in any way, please forgive us. Reach out to the Beth El staff or clergy or to me, Carrie Fox, or anyone on the Keruv Committee to

let us know how we can do better. After all, is that not what this season is about?

Best wishes for a sweet New Year! Shanah tovah u’metukah!

Beth El Nursery School

As we launch into a vibrant new year at our nursery school, we are honored to welcome both familiar and new faces to our Reggio Emilia–inspired learning community. Here, we believe that every child is created b’tzelem Elohim (in the Divine image): capable, curious, and full of potential.

In the spirit of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we view our learners as strong, resourceful, and active meaning-makers in their own lives. Rather than only following a set curriculum, we listen deeply to what interests them, observe their explorations, and become coinvestigators in the process of learning. Our classrooms are thoughtfully designed, with natural light, wooden materials, plants, open spaces, and creative provocations, to spark curiosity and engagement. The space is intentionally inviting, evolving alongside the questions and inquiries of your children.

Every child expresses themselves through many “languages:” from painting and storytelling to sculpture and dramatic play. We honor all these forms of expression, encouraging each learner to share their thinking in their own way and celebrating the beauty of their diverse voices. In this circle of children, educators, and families, we create a vibrant, joyful space grounded in Jewish tradition and pedagogical innovation. We journey together, each day, each question, each “aha moment,” toward learning that is deeply felt, shared, and meaningful. Welcome to a year of wonder and discovery.

Ronnie Becher & Shery Rosenstein Beth El Nursery School

Days unfold through the children’s interests, whether it begins with a fascination with mud, a puppet workshop, or a volcano-making experiment. From these threads, longterm projects grow which integrate math, science, literacy, and Jewish learning. As educators, we engage children with experiences in tzedakah giving, Brit (relationships), and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) allowing these values to emerge authentically through exploration and experience. We document your child’s ideas, conversations, artistic expressions, and photographs. This documentation becomes visible in classroom galleries and parent-teacher dialogues, helping us reflect, revisit, and chart new paths of inquiry.

Secrets of Our Sanctuary

This is the fourth of five Bulletin articles exploring the Beth El Sanctuary as we celebrate its 55th year. The Sanctuary was opened for use for the High Holidays in 1970.

The articles are based on the book, Let Them Build Me a Sanctuary, written by Beth El member Stanley Batkin, z’’l, who was the primary force behind the design and construction of the Sanctuary, which was part of the third building constructed to form our spiritual home, joining the Ballroom/ Auditorium building and the Religious School Building, which had been built, respectively, in 1957 and 1961, as Beth El fully transitioned from downtown New Rochelle to the North End.

The Menorah and “missing” design elements

Stanley’s book devotes two and a half pages to the seven branch Menorah on the right side of the Bimah. Stanley had it fabricated based on a rendering of the Menorah in the Second Temple, including the three-legged base. The rendering was discovered on an archeological excavation dating back to the Herodian period, located 300 yards from the Temple Mount, as reported in the London Jewish Chronicle in December 1969. The rendering was located on a piece of painted plaster from an apartment located at the bottom of “nine levels of building operations apparently belonging to six different periods of history.”

Stanley was deep into the design phase of the Sanctuary when he read the article and communicateddirectly with Professor Nahman Avigad, the Head of the Archaeology Department at Hebrew University that was responsible for the excavation. By that time, Beth El had “examined and rejected ‘dozens’ of artist’s presentations for our Menorah.”

Professor Avigad was kept advised of our progress and, after Stanley showed him a photo of the completed work, he wrote a letter to the children in our Hebrew School shortly before Hanukkah in 1971, praising the “magnificent and impressive” depiction, and noted

You see, at a time when the original Menorah was still standing in the Temple of Jerusalem, about 2,000 years ago, a citizen of Jerusalem residing in the Upper City just opposite the Temple Mount, decorated the wall of his room with a nicely executed drawing of the seven-branched candelabrum which he certainly knew personally from the Temple. Obviously, to him the Menorah meant not just a ritual object to use in the Temple, but also an expression of national and religious belonging and a symbol of eternal values-light, knowledge, eternal life.

Two thousand years later, archaeologists in Jerusalem

discovered the very same drawing of the Menorah in a layer of remains dating to the Herodian period. . . . The Hanukkah candles you are lighting are an expression of the very same values – the eternity of the Jewish spirit.

Stanley chose to install only one Menorah “to avoid complete symmetry in the area and to concentrate on the beauty of this reproduction”.

The book discloses elements of the Sanctuary design that were never actually installed or used. There was a plan for an intercom from the two pulpits on the left side of the Bimah, running to an “usher station.” The intent was to provide the clergy with a way to signal to open and close the doors. There is no indication where that usher station was to be located, but neither the station nor the intercom system was ever installed. Although not documented in the book, I recall learning that Rabbi Golovensky, our long-time rabbi both before and after the move to the North End, had no intention of using an electronic notification device on Shabbat or Yom Tov.

Another “Unique Feature” described in the book is a“Mothers’ and Infants’ Room”, located in the room on the right when you enter the Sanctuary from the Lobby (currently used as Rabbi Bedo’s office), with “piped in sound and a TV outlet from the sanctuary and . . . fully equipped facilities for this age group.” The reason the room was never used for this purpose, is also unknown.

The final article in the last edition of The Bulletin for 2025 will explore the creation, installation and meaning of the magnificent holiday wall panels on either side of the Sanctuary.

Beth El Sisterhood

The Jewish calendar is very interesting to me. It gives each of us time to prepare for the holidays ahead. As I write this, we will be reading the last of the Haftorot of Admonition this coming Shabbat, and will be starting to read the seven Haftorot of Consolation – all a precursor to welcoming the Jewish New Year in September. During this time, we have the opportunity to reflect on the past and anticipate, spiritually and emotionally, the year to come.

We enter this new year of 5786 filled with awe – and consternation – our hope is that each of us will continue to strive to be better versions of ourselves in the years to come.

Pick up your crochet hooks and knitting needles for the

We Care Blankets Project — Join us Thursday

Mornings at 10:00am in the Beth El Den

Even during the slower summer months, we’ve been busy crafting blankets at Beth El. We have met consistently throughout the season, building on our success from donating 27 blankets to Maria Ferrari Children’s Hospital in May. This August, we donated 14 larger blankets to Blythedale Children’s Hospital, and we’re gathering more for our next donations, also to other local organizations helping children in need.

Join our multi-generational group! We meet nearly every Thursday from 10-12 in our beautiful building (cookies included!). Whether you’re an experienced crafter or have never held a crochet hook or knitting needles, we’d love to have you. No experience necessary -- we provide everything you need, including patient instruction and plenty of encouragement. It’s become a wonderful way to connect while making a meaningful difference in children’s lives.

Can’t make it in person? No problem! Many crafters work at home and deliver finished blankets to the synagogue. We’ve even received blankets from as far away as Texas! Requirements are simple: 100% acrylic yarn (hypoallergenic and easy-care), minimum 36 inches square, no fringe.

Special thanks to Dorothy, Rita, and Cindy for transforming an idea into this thriving project, and to our patient teachers Phyllis, Carole, and Penny. Judi, Elly, Sue, Ruth, and Linda are also part of our core group of in-person regulars who have contributed many blankets and continue making more.

ongoing Beth El Synagogue project of “We Care Blankets,” which provides blankets for NICU babies and more. See below for more information.

Don’t be shy when approached to make a donation for the 2026 Torah Fund pin. You, too, can have this beautiful pin by supporting the Torah Fund Campaign of the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism, which helps support programs and student scholarships at Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA), Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem), Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and Zacharias Frankel College (Potsdam, Germany).

Thank you to our crafters at all stages of their projects; we apologize if we’ve missed anyone. Please label blankets you drop off with your name so we can properly thank you, or send an email so we can offer encouragement while you work. We can’t do this without you!

Please join us as We Care and Grow Together. For more information, please join us on a Thursday mornings or contact Cindy Shechter to help at wecaresisterhood@gmail.com.

Oseh Shalom Maker of Peace

We strive to make a significant impact through scholarships and programs that benefit students at The Jewish Theological Seminary, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, Schechter Institutes, Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano, and The Abraham J. Heschel Seminary.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we help committed Jewish students become the rabbis, cantors, educators, synagogue administrators, social workers, scholars, researchers and lay leaders of tomorrow.

When you support Torah Fund, you help educate students in New York, Los Angeles, Israel, Latin America and Europe—and you align with those who value learning, knowledge and providing the future generation with relevant skills to fortify the Jewish people.
