Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
It feels really good to return home to Beth El after my time away. The hardest part about being away was losing my spiritual home. I was surprised that during my sabbatical, I felt a bit lost on Shabbat. I missed Cantor Gaby’s davenning (prayer leading), the singing, the rhythm of our Shabbat services, the familiar faces, the sound of our Torah readers, the kids on the bimah, and the love that is so palpable when you enter our prayer spaces. We have something special at Beth El, and I missed it week after week. I missed you
It’s good to be home.
Freeman-Bosworth and her team of officers for providing me with this opportunity, as well as Liz Clain, who not only held down the fort but did so with great ease and her typical warm reassurance.
I want to share a very special thanks to Rabbi Sitkin who was absolutely phenomenal, and unsurprisingly, inspired a universal sense of stability during this challenging time. We are blessed by his spiritual leadership and I am incredibly grateful for his partnership and friendship. I enjoyed my sabbatical because I was confident that the shul was in extremely gifted rabbinic hands.
I have so much to share about my sabbatical, and I trust that over time, I will find ways to share it with you. I learned a great deal from spending time in other synagogues (and developed an even deeper sense of gratitude for what we are building at Beth El!). I had time to work on some writing projects and studied with rabbis and professors in Jerusalem.
During my sabbatical, I spent a significant amount of time in Israel, volunteering where needed and connecting with family and friends. Although the period since October 7th has been far from restful, it turned out to be the most meaningful time I’ve ever spent there. Being with our brothers and sisters during this time of war, trauma, and uncertainty was where I felt I needed to be, and I am deeply grateful that I had this unusual opportunity. I have much to share about this experience and will find a variety of ways to do so.
One of the most challenging aspects of serving a community in the pulpit is that your time doesn’t really belong to you. One of the great gifts of this sabbatical was that I could prioritize being a dad, a husband, a son, and a friend. It was magical to be able to cook dinner for my family (and eat it with them!) and shlep my daughter to dance and just be present in ways that were impossible during the last twenty years. I didn’t know how much I needed that time to be, well, human. I feel rejuvenated by spending time with the people I love most and will forever cherish this part of my sabbatical.
Hakarat Hatov—Gratitude
All of this was possible because I have remarkably gifted colleagues and a wonderful team of lay leaders who went above and beyond to support this time away. I want to thank Lauren
Cantor Gaby stepped up in many ways during my sabbatical. Her work ethic, love of teaching and prayer, and her tireless committment to our shul sustained so many. We are so blessed by her presence and her talent.
Rabbi Sirner and Lenore’s time with us was emotional and deeply meaningful. Many people told me that they were moved to tears by just hearing his voice and seeing his presence on the bimah. I was thrilled to hear this and I am hopeful that we can find more ways to share the bimah together in the coming years. His homecoming was really special for our shul.
Rabbi Fisher’s return was also wonderful, with so many people being able to stay connected to her and her Torah even as she builds a new life for herself in North Carolina. It was a treat to have her back at Beth El.
Finally, as we look ahead and begin to think about the new year, I am thrilled to welcome Rabbi Viki Bedo to our clergy team! As you get to know her you will discover a rabbi of great depth and humanity; the impact of her leadership will be felt immediately and will help shape our shared future.
We are poised to build on our successes, and I’m filled with optimism about the future of our community and yes, even the Jewish people. In my lifetime, synagogues have never been more important, and I’m energized to tackle our challenges and expand on our accomplishments. I can’t wait to hit the ground running!
L’Shalom, Rabbi David A. Schuck
When you walk into the synagogue this High Holiday season, take a moment to appreciate the hustle and heart that went into making it all happen. In this Bulletin, online, and in emails you have received details about High Holidays information, so I thought I’d pull back the curtains and reveal the Synagogue’s logistics to prepare for the High Holidays. 72 Torahs at Beth El! I know, I couldn’t believe that figure either when Liz emailed me—only I scrolled to see 50 were stuffed toy torahs. 27 readers will lein from the larger and Kosherer Torahs during the Chaggim, steps away from the Terrace where the plush toy torahs will be joyfully held by our youngest members.
To get our 22 Torahs ready, we also have to talk about the silver—those gorgeous Torah crowns that shine so brightly on the bimah. Months before you even start thinking about apples and honey, a dedicated crew is elbow-deep in polish, making sure every piece sparkles.
As of August 30th, over 1800 name tags were printed and ready to be scooped up. The font will be size 48 so everyone will be able to see our names printed without squinting, allowing us to warmly welcome each other. Then, there are the chairs. Imagine playing a giant game of Tetris, but instead of blocks, you’re working with over 1,000 chairs, as the staff assigns the Enhanced Seating and fits in seats for all who are coming for the holidays.
The High Holiday planning for 5785 began 11 days after the start of 5784. For those who need a reminder of the happenings then: we had just bitten into our blintzes and bagels at break fast and were discussing among family how spiritual and amazing the High Holidays were at Beth El and how we could further improve upon them (for those that thought it was even possible).
I sat down that evening (very early in the next day of the Hebrew calendar, but before my early bedtime) and jotted down my impressions and what I had already discussed with clergy and congregants in the past two weeks. Over the next 373 days, I knew the awe-inspiring staff of Beth El would implement our feedback and create a truly special, albeit rather late, Chaggim (I’m not complaining as my son will be home for fall break for Kol Nidrei—stay tuned for the Kol Nidrei appeal...).
The silver, the chairs, the assigning of torah and haftorah readings, the davening, the magnificent sermons, the security, the name tags, the ushers and greeters - all of these elements go into making our Beth El services so seamless, meaningful and joyous. We look forward to once again gathering together to celebrate the High Holidays as a community.
Brian, Andrew, Robin and I wish everyone a sweet New Year.

Sitting quietly in community, with guidance, opens channels of thoughts and feelings that are often opportunities to reflect on and re-consider choices we’ve made, patterns we’ve established and relationships we cherish. It is also an opportunity to cultivate gratitude for the gifts in our lives and compassion for the pain and suffering we all experience either personally or through relatives and friends.

We have so many ways for children and families of all ages to engage with the High Holidays!
Our youngest children and their families are welcome to come celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with special services just for you. Our engaging Tot services are led by our clergy and focus on singing, praying, dancing and community building. Each service is about 30 minutes long and will meet on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur.
We will have childcare available for children ages 2-5 after the Tots Service ends. We will also offer childcare during Kol Nidrei and on Yom Kippur. Babies and toddlers may join childcare with an accompanying adult.
We are continuing our popular Family Service, designed for families with K-4th grade children to participate in a service experience just for them This meaningful service incorporates “highlights” of the traditional High Holiday services, along with family participation, activities and experiences to add meaning and connection to the themes of the holidays. The Family Service will occur on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur.
We will also have holiday-themed activities and childcare available for our K-4th graders during Kol Nidrei.
We are enhancing our programming for our 5th-7th graders with a service experience just for them. A mixture of meaningful activities, prayer, discussion, and deep thinking, this service will meet on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur.
We will also have a discussion for our 5th-7th graders during Kol Nidrei.
We hold teen services on both days of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidrei, and Yom Kippur day. Cantor Gaby works with our Teens to lead parts of the service and, along with the Teen service facilitator, our teens create opportunities to learn and discuss important topics with their peers.
Magic Show for Children—Yom Kippur Day
We host a magic show every year for the children during Neilah. They have a blast watching card tricks, ventriloquy, and holiday-friendly magic of all kinds After the magic show, we are excited to resume a very special Beth El tradition–that of all of the children, led by our high school seniors, join the clergy on the bimah for Havdalah at the end of Neilah on Yom Kippur.
October 13th
Join us to add your artistic talent to the Beth El sukkah. We rely on our youth community for our decorations, so please come Sunday to create some arts and crafts to beautify our sukkah.
Sukkah Walk—Thursday, October 17th
Come celebrate Sukkot with our Sukkah Walk on Thursday, October 17, in which we visit different sukkot around the neighborhood Each station includes opportunities for the whole family.
Thursday’s Mini Hakafot is perfect for preschool children and their families, we meet on Thursday at 4:30pm for a light dinner, and dancing with (stuffed) Torahs, and singing as preparation for Simchat Torah.
Regular Hakafot: The whole congregation joins together on Thursday evening for Havdalah and Hakafot–the mass singing and dancing to celebrate Simchat Torah. Teens assist in handing out “passports” that help younger children track each hakafa (round of dancing). Fill up your passport to get a surprise.
On Friday morning, during Simchat Torah services, children ages 6-12 help us celebrate the Torah by reading a verse at the very end of the Torah. Please be in touch with Cantor Gaby to sign up at gschvartz@bethelnr.org.

Asaf Baider, age 17, Netiv HaShara I live in Netiv HaShara, a small community near Gaza, where everyone knows each other and it feels like one big family. Recently, life has been tough following the October 7 attacks on our moshav. It was a life-changing event for me and everyone in our community. While it has been incredibly challenging, it has also shaped who I am today.
I have two younger brothers, Yahnay and Hillel, who keep things lively at home, and we have a sweet dog named Kiyoti. My dad, Eran, grows raspberries and strawberries in the moshav, and my mom, Maya, is a midwife. I’m deeply involved in a youth movement called “HaTnua HaHadasha.” I’ve been a youth instructor for fifth and sixth graders for two years, and this year, I started mentoring new youth instructors. With the recent war and our moshav being evacuated, my role has shifted. Now, I’m working to bring back the movement’s activities in the hotel or wherever we’re staying.
Music is a huge part of my life. I love going to concerts, hanging out with my friends, and spending time outdoors. I’m also really into collecting records—my collection is one of my proudest achievements.
I’m excited about joining the community in Westchester for shlichut. I believe it will be an amazing experience and a chance for me to grow. I also feel like I have a lot to share about being Israeli, living near the Gaza envelope, and my experiences.

In 10th grade, I led a group of 4th-grade girls. In 11th grade, I led a group of special needs adults, and in 12th grade, I was the head of leaders for three groups of special needs kids and adults.

Last summer, I participated in the Tzofim Friendship Caravan delegation. We performed in front of dozens of Jewish communities, synagogues, camps, schools, senior homes, and preschools in 21 states.Since I was 14, it has been my dream

Ohad Vered, Age 18, Kibbutz Dvir I live in Kibbutz Dvir, a small, close-knit community in Israel. My favorite spot in the kibbutz is the pool, where I spend much of the summer with my friends. I have two parents, a younger sister, and a younger brother.
One of my hobbies is playing the guitar. I play in a band at school, and performing with them is always a lot of fun.
I’m excited about sharing the unique traditions of my kibbutz and the culture of Israel through the Shlichut.

Yarden Terkel, Age 17, Gan Yavne I’m thrilled to be one of the Shinshinim of Westchester! I live in Gan Yavne, a small town near Ashdod. I have two younger brothers and a dog, and my favorite place is the beach. I love going there at sunset to do yoga. In my free time, I like to go to the gym, surf, and travel with family and friends.
In school, I particularly enjoy medicine, mathematics, and biology, and I aspire to become a doctor in the future. Since fifth grade, I’ve been actively involved in the Scouts, which has been a major source of inspiration and influence for me. I also enjoy going on trips and spending time with my family.
Additionally, I take part in the Scouts and the Mashatzim, and I have been doing so since 10th grade. In the Scouts, in my first year, I guided 11-year-old kids, and for the past two years, I have been guiding 15-year-old kids. In the Mashatzim, I have been guiding 15-year-olds as well, and I have been guiding children from my school during school trips.

Beginnings are magical, wondrous & filled with emotion.
Whether bringing in your first child for their very first day of school, or a third child for their third year here at Beth El, this moment is special and filled with blessing. It is a blessing that our children are healthy; a blessing that we are part of a school that can offer abundant and rich opportunities for our children. We are blessed to work with parents, relatives and caregivers who are so gentle and present with their children.
Your partnership with us this fall helps to effectively make the giant transition from home to school so that together we can successfully launch the year ahead. Lastly, we are also blessed to work with a professional, calm, devoted and caring staff that will make the beginning weeks of school run smoothly.
Our hope is that during their time at Beth El and beyond, children will deepen their love of learning and develop a thoughtful awareness of themselves and others.
Join us on our Reggio- inspired journey, as we strive to create a kehillah k’dushah, (sacred community) of children, parents and faculty.
Sensory Gym Young minds, like older ones need a break sometimes from structured time. Our new Sensory Gym, staffed by professionals and funded by two grants and a generous donation from Beth El’s Sisterhood, will be up and running as the school year kicks off.
A key component in our Reggio Emilia inspired school, this art studio, complete with a gifted instructor known as an Aterliersta, invites children to invent, create and explore themselves through art.
We are pleased to report that our enhanced second playground joins our expanded outdoor spaces providing much room for exploring, playing, and outdoor learning!
Finally, this fall, we also roll out our new transitional bridge class for 5 year olds who would benefit from the gift of another year before going to Kindergarten.
Ronnie Becher & Shery Rosenstein Director & Assistant Director, Beth El Nursery School
Special thank you to the Ruttenberg and Sherman Family for their generous donations to Beth El Day Camp’s new Sensory Room in memory of Bradley Ruttenberg. This space was such a fantastic addition to Beth El Campers, who fell in love with our weighted stuffed animals and the opportunity to develop selfregulation tools.
Jeremy Marcus’s family have been members of Beth El for more than 12 years. Jeremy has participated in Beth El’s Religious School since the 1st grade, as a Youth & Family volunteer since middle school; in our B’nai Mitzvah program; in Beth El Teen USY; as BBYO’s Chapter President/ Acting Regional VP, and as a minyan volunteer in high school. Now that he’s in college, he continues to be a valued member, returning this summer as a counselor at Beth El Day Camp.
How was your Summer 2024 as Counselor at Beth El Day Camp?
I loved working at camp this summer. I had the best cocounselors that made everyday so much fun, and of course the kids are always adorable. I especially look back on my time in the pool, since that’s when I would have the best opportunity to play with my kids.
What are you looking forward to in the Fall Semester at your college? (Where are you going by the way?)
As a second year transfer to Binghamton University, I have a lot to look forward to this semester. I am especially looking forward to getting involved in our Chabad chapter and meeting new people there.
What advice do you have for other Beth El Teens as we begin 5785?
Always be yourself. You don’t need to try and surround
yourself with people that you want to be like, rather the right people will always find you as long as you are truly being yourself. Be confident in who you are and the values you hold closest to yourself.
Anything else you’d like to share with Beth El Community?
Massive shoutout to Rebecca and Zoe for running such a great summer at Beth El Day Camp. This summer would not have been at all successful without them, and I truly appreciate the support they gave me each and everyday of the summer.
Camper Azyn Colón’s POV
What did you like most about Jeremy as a counselor at Beth El Day Camp?
Jeremy was the best counselor because he’s super fun and cool! I enjoyed learning new things with him like shabbat, gaga and tie dying. I enjoyed Truck Day and Israel Day, especially stamping my passport!
Thank you, Jeremy, for being part of our community!

This summer many members of our community joined Israel 360 for our May 28th event with Tomer Zak and Ran Groswirt, members of Kibbutz Kissufim, who discussed their personal experience of loss on October 7th and its aftermath. Tomer lost her entire family except for one brother and her resilience and hopefulness were inspiring. Ran was abroad on October 7th, and shared his unique perspective on grappling with his own loss and the losses Kibbutz Kissufim suffered from afar.
If you missed this important event, you can watch it along with other recordings and resources at bethelnr.org/israel-resources.
Our burgeoning relationship with Kibbutz Kissufim will strengthen over the next months as we continue to develop programs to deepen our connections and support for their community.
We also look forward to seeing you at Beth El’s Sept 8th Welcome Back Bash, where we will warmly welcome our new Shlicha, Hila Madar Itzkovitz and a new cohort of Shinshinim. We’re working on more Israelrelated programming for the upcoming year so—stay tuned!
As we begin a new year we are thrilled to introduce new and exciting musical programs to our community, and to continue to enrich our musical and spiritual lives with ongoing, established programs.
Join us on Sunday, September 8th at 5:30pm for our Welcome Back Bash, and a special, exciting concert, premiering 8 new songs for Simchat Torah by the Grammy award-winning and world renowned klezmer trumpet player, composer and band leader, Sir Frank London.
This concert will feature our Prayer Team and an allstar ensemble including Hazan Basya Schechter, Rabbi Yosef Goldman, Loren Sklamberg and other Jewish music luminaries. This is a don’t miss!
And of course, please join us on Simchat Torah to sing these songs as part of our festival celebrations on October 24th and 25th!
We are also excited to launch a new program, Beth El Cafe! Hang out with us, have a drink and a nosh, and hear wonderful pop, rock and folk performances by our very own members. This promises to be a casual and fun and social evening of music and community. Stay tuned for more details. Interested in joining in on the musicmaking? Let’s find a way—email jklebanow@bethelnr.org.
Wishing you a healthy and productive and sweet New Year.

FRANK LONDON
Beth El is looking for volunteers to help lead our efforts to expand Beth El’s involvement in the following areas: social action, chesed, and community building/social programming.
If you are someone who is looking to get more involved, please contact Beth El’s Director of Programming Stephanie Lederman at slederman@bethelnr.org
Beth El’s Keruv Committee amplifies the needs of our community so that programs, communications, and the Synagogue itself are equitably accessible to members. One small but important shift made in partnership with the Marketing & Programming Team has been the addition of a line at the top of weekly announcement emails stating, “For event accessibility needs, please be in touch so we can address them.” Please call or email the office if you need help attending any Beth El events—see you there!
The upcoming high holiday season can be challenging for people with physical or mental disabilities. As with last year, we plan to set aside a “quiet room” for children on the Autism
Spectrum or anyone else who needs to take a break from the crowds and noise. Children are expected to be accompanied by an adult. We can also assign a volunteer to stay with a developmentally disabled child for an hour or so to enable the child’s parents to attend services. Please let us know if you would like a volunteer assigned to your child.
Do you have any special needs for the high holidays such as wheelchair seating? Please let us know! Please email info@bethelnr.org or call our main office.

We hope everyone has enjoyed the summer months in Westchester and beyond.
As we approach the High Holidays, our security team is preparing accordingly, ensuring our congregation is safe and secure. As a reminder, security is everyone’s job—
if you see something, say something. Beth El Staff and Security will be clearly identified at high holiday services.
We are looking for additional volunteers to join our team’s efforts. Please be in touch with Michael Dorfman at michaelalandorfman@gmail.com for details.
The Senior Mature Adults Retired Together program offers fun, friendship and learning! Our goal is to deepen and amplify socialization and engagement. This “purposeful immersion” boosts physical and mental health and creates new bonds at every age and stage.
A lively bi-monthly discussion on subjects of current national and global interest. Topics are chosen by group members. We meet on the first and third Mondays of the month from 11am - 12noon.
Hugely popular, on Tuesdays at 10am, this weekly health and fitness program features classes using balls, weights, and stretch bands. No charge for Silver Sneakers members. Nominal $5 fee to other participants. Start the new year off right, join our group. We welcome new participants! First session of the year: Tuesday, September 10
Once a month after Silver Sneakers, we gather to expand our culinary and educational horizons. Topics have included Jewish Boxers of the 1920s, legal affairs and Artificial Intelligence. In June, the Brooklyn Seltzer Museum visited us, and we experienced Seltzertopia, capping off the event with chocolate egg creams! We invite all curious learners to Lunch & Learn, members and nonmembers! Afterwards, a delicious homemade meal is enjoyed. A nominal fee of $10 is charged.
Check out Beth El’s Calendar at bethelnr.org/calendar for our full lineup. If you have questions, comments or would like to sit down to discuss new ideas for implementation, I would love to hear your thoughts! Reach me at jrockowitz@bethelnr.org or by phone at (914)235-2700 ext. 340.
