REFUGEE UPDATE

RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, It’s hard to believe that we find ourselves preparing for another yamim noraim, high holidays! I am so excited to gather together again to see one another, hear the melodies that bind us to one another and the past, and blend our prayers for the coming year with Jews all over the world. This is my most favorite time at Beth El! When I witness the excitement surrounding the synagogue as we prepare to greet so many people back in our home, meticulously polishing the railings and the silver on the Torahs, my thoughts turn to the shamash—the dedicated shul attendant who, throughout history, busily scurried around the synagogue, ensuring it was impeccably prepared for these sacred days. In addition to the offerings that we are accustomed to for the holidays, we are adding some additional things that we think will engage people in new ways, and we are making a few changes. All of these decisions were arrived at by our clergy team, professional staff, officers, and lay leaders based on your input from this year’s high holiday survey and the shifting trends in high holiday engagement over the past few years. While some who filled out the survey felt strongly about having a second service, the vast majority of people, including many who attended the Kasakove or tent service in the past, now prefer the main sanctuary service. Many people also indicated an interest in attending an alternative service that looked totally different from our traditional service in the main sanctuary. As such, Rabbi Sitkin will lead a contemplative service in the tent on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, which will begin immediately after the sermon

in the main sanctuary. This way, people are welcome to join for any part of Shacharit, the Torah and Haftarah readings, Shofar Service, and Sermon in the main sanctuary, and then attend the contemplative service in the tent during Musaf. On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, we will offer our typical parallel service in the tent, beginning with the Torah service and going through Musaf. Instead of hiring a cantor to lead that service, I will lead the davening (prayers) and one of the other rabbis will give the sermon (I have been working hard to be well prepared to lead that service, but please remember that I am not a cantor ). On Yom Kippur day, we will offer a parallel service in the tent for the Torah reading and Musaf, and the davening will be led by Rabbi Sitkin. For Kol Nidrei, Mincha, and Neilah on Yom Kippur, there will only be one service in the sanctuary. We will continue to offer four different services for our youth community (a tot service, a family service, a new 4th-7th grade service, and a teen service), and we will livestream the main sanctuary service for those who are unable to attend in person. As we contemplate the services this coming year, we are of course saddened to know that this will be Rabbi Fisher’s final high holiday season with us. We look forward to learning from her and sharing these special days together before she moves to North Carolina. Our hope, of course (!), is that everyone who is able to attend in person will do so, as it makes a huge difference in the experience of our community to be physically together during this sacred time. It is also the perfect antidote to the loneliness and divisiveness that have plagued our country. I think that these new offerings and changes will enhance our communal experience and offer new options for people who seek an alternative to the traditional service. I am beyond excited to see all of you again this fall, and I wish each and every one of you a Shanah Metukah, a sweet year of good health and lots of love!

😉

L’Shalom, L’Shalom, Rabbi David A. Schuck

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE to enrich our shared community together. If you are a long-time Beth El member who has been very active as a volunteer or in attending events, please say hello on Shabbat or send me an email so we can continue to build Beth El together. If you are a new Beth El member, or someone looking to figure out what aspects of Beth El most speak to you, please introduce yourself, say “hi!”, and let’s connect. Beth El is our community, and each of us has the opportunity to shape it together. Let’s spend this coming year singing together on Shabbat morning, dancing around the bimah to celebrate simchas, supporting one another in difficult times, being inspired by stirring words of Torah, and chatting with friends, new and old, over bagels and lox (and capers if that’s your thing, no judgment…). And, above all, feeling blessed to be part of a community that so enriches our lives with all of those experiences. My husband Brian, my children Andrew and Robin, and I all wish a Shana Tova to the entire Beth El Family. Looking forward to a Sweet, Happy, and Healthy New Year, Lauren Freeman-Bosworth President

VOLUNTEER AT BETH EL! Calling all volunteers! Beth El is looking for volunteers to help lead our efforts to expand Beth El’s involvement in the following areas: social action, chesed, and community building/social programming. If you are someone who is looking to get more involved, please contact Stephanie Lederman at slederman@bethelnr.org.

The Bulletin September 2023

I am thrilled to write my very first bulletin article as the new President of Beth El. By way of introduction, my family joined Beth El shortly after we moved to Westchester. I remember sitting in the office of thenExecutive Director Erica Leventhal and telling her that we wouldn’t just want to join Beth El but we would want to jump in – to really take advantage of the synagogue and all it has to offer. We felt embraced by the warmth of the community and immediately became active members of the shul. Outside of Beth El, I am a corporate lawyer who specializes in a wide range of areas of the law, including litigation and dispute resolution, ethics and compliance, corporate governance and safety, and sustainability. At Beth El, I have similarly embraced an array of roles – being involved in search committees to bring in clergy and other professional leaders, strategic planning, running programs and events, such as the Gala and Kallah, serving as a gabbai on Shabbat, and serving as an officer and a board member for many years. Why, you may ask, as a lawyer and a mom to two teenagers, do I spend so much of my “free” time involved at Beth El? Because Beth El is my community. It is a spiritual place where I delight in joyful singing on the holidays and engage in deep reflection during poignant moments on Shabbat. It is a social community of friends, some of whom I knew before joining Beth El, but most of whom I have connected with and continue to connect with while discussing Torah together, noshing on bagels at kiddush, or watching our children grow up in this second home. It is a place that nourishes so many aspects of my life, and enriches my life. I am grateful to be a part of this family. While I can’t say that I love every single minute of every Zoom meeting, I can and do regularly say that I love being so involved at Beth El. The opportunity to spend time with clergy, professional staff, and you envisioning the future of our community enriches my experiences at Beth El. I am excited, eager, nervous, and a host of other emotions at the responsibility and the opportunity to serve as President of this incredible institution. I see myself as a partner in that work with our amazing clergy team of Rabbi Schuck, Rabbi Sitkin, Rabbi Fisher, and Cantor Gaby, and the dedicated staff, under the leadership of our new Executive Director, Liz Clain. There are numerous lay leaders – officers, committee chairs, and volunteers – who bring energy, ideas, and passion to building and sustaining our community. Each member of Beth El is key, and I look forward to continuing

Get to Know Elizabeth Clain Our New Executive Director! We’re so excited to welcome Elizabeth Clain, our new Executive Director at Beth El! Elizabeth began her tenure in July and is so excited to get to know our community, clergy, and staff.

Elizabeth Clain joins us as a leader in the field of education. She received her B.A. in Political Science and Child Study from Tufts University, her Masters in Teaching from Columbia Teachers College and her Administrative degree from Hunter College. She began her career teaching in the New York City Public schools before transitioning to Mamaroneck High School, where she spent 26 years, first as a Social Studies teacher, and for the last 11 years as the Principal. A collaborative and progressive educator known for her compassion and dedication, Elizabeth oversaw every aspect of running Mamaroneck High School, including the supervision, support and mentoring of over 175 faculty members, the safety of 1,650 students, the curriculum development for all classes and the focus on equity and inclusion. Over the course of her tenure she developed deep relationships with students, parents, and faculty, and was committed to developing a strong culture of joy and caring.

The Bulletin September 2023

What was your favorite part of working in education? The two things I loved about my position at Mamaroneck High School was having the opportunity to watch adolescents over a four year period develop into wonderful, thoughtful, creative young adults. I also found great joy in mentoring and coaching teachers and new administrators. What are you most excited about working at Beth El? I am excited to take skills I have developed over the last 30 years and use them in an entirely new environment, one that I feel passionately about. I strongly believe in the importance of synagogue life in the United States and have found comfort, solace, support, and community in my own synagogue. I am happy to be supporting the unique vision that exists at Beth El Synagogue Center.

6

Who inspires you? Why? Wow - that’s a tough one! So many people inspire me but first and foremost, my parents. At the age of 40 and 42 they left everyone and everything they knew to move to the United States with the sole purpose of ensuring that our family would stay together. When I hit the age of 40, I was struck by what a monumental act of bravery this was. What are some of your hobbies outside of work? I spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking, baking, and eating! We are a family that loves spice and heat so Indian, Korean, Mexican - anything with a lot of flavors we are cooking. I am also an avid reader. I tend to listen to my non-fiction books and am currently listening to The Wager by David Grann. I am reading the Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead which is right up my alley because it is a great yarn about strong women living a century apart. How can people get in touch with you? I am eager to meet all members of Beth El. If you are at Beth El, please stop in and introduce yourself. You can also email me at eclain@bethelnr.org or call me at (914) 235-2700 x 223

Beth El Day Camp We had a spectacular summer at Beth El Day Camp! Offering 8 weeks of camp to children ages 2-8, during which we welcomed over 240 campers to experience the magic of Beth El. This year we introduced a Hebrew word of the week: shalom (hello, goodbye, and peace), kesem (magic), and glida (ice cream), etc.. We carefully selected the words to relate to camp activities, allowing campers and counselors to quickly grow their vocabularies, language skills, and love of Hebrew. We also introduced a value of the week through our Cooking with Kindness curriculum. When asked about cooking at camp, one of our five-year-old campers shared, “I learned that we have to be patient in cooking and around camp.” New this year, we offered Creativity Camp, for children ages 9-12, which focused on creative materials, including: polymer clay, fused glass, textile art, and photography. The campers gained culinary skills while making foods from around the world such as spanakopita and shakshuka. On Fridays, Creativity Camp represented Beth El Day Camp as food ambassadors at the Down to Earth Farmers Market where they distributed foods they had made, such as strawberry parfaits. These were a huge hit! Campers had an opportunity to sample the delicious foods using ingredients from the market. We had so many fun activities this summer, like yoga, sports, tennis, crossfit, music, nature, STEM, and swimming. In addition, our theme days kept the summer exciting! Some of our favorite days were Oobleck Day, Tie-Dye Day, Carnival Day, Israel Day, and Truck Day. Beth El Day Camp is committed to creating a safe, joyous, fun-filled camp experience. We know that the friendships and memories from camp last a lifetime. If you are interested in learning more about Beth El Day Camp, please reach out to Rebecca at rguralnik@bethelnr.org.

New Contemplative Service We are excited to offer our community a transformative and spiritually enriching Contemplative Service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah this year. Over the past several years, we've made conscious efforts to center different Jewish spiritual practices at the core of our communal experience. Parallel to the main sanctuary service, the Contemplative Service will be an alternative pathway of connection to the High Holidays. Our monthly Shabbat Kavanah Service has been an important step in embracing the ever-evolving needs of our congregation and we are going to extend that experience to the High Holidays as well. During the Contemplative Service, we will embark on a soul-nourishing journey that delves into the themes of the

High Holidays, offering a space for introspection, renewal, and connection with one another. Drawing from the rich tapestry of Jewish tradition, our Contemplative Service aims to transcend the traditional liturgy in order to tap into the language of the soul. We hope the combination of niggunim, poetry, and silent meditation will allow you to find meaning without some of the barriers of the traditional liturgy. We hope you'll consider joining me for this uplifting opportunity to interact with the High Holidays in a new way. We look forward to welcoming in the Jewish New Year with you, as we commit to growth, understanding, and renewal during this holiest of seasons. Wishing you a Shanah Tovah Umetukah, a sweet and joyous New Year!

The Bulletin September 2023

Once again, this past June, in response to the needs of many families, Beth El Nursery School offered a Mini Camp! This two-week program was a helpful bridge between the end of school and the start of Beth El Day Camp. Mini Camp was available for 2s, 3s, and 4-year-olds. The weather cooperated and children engaged in extensive water activities, sand play, painting, and art experiences. The interfacing of the children in this multiple-age group was a joy to behold. And of course, Mini Camp is already on the calendar for next June! And now to September: beginnings are magical, wondrous, and filled with emotion. Whether bringing in a first child for their very first day of school, or a third child for their third year here at Beth El, this moment is special and filled with blessing. It is a blessing that our children are part of a school that can offer abundant and rich opportunities for our children. We are blessed to work with parents, relatives, and caregivers who are so gentle and present for your children. Your trust and confidence in us help to effectively make the giant transition from home to school so that together we can successfully launch the year ahead. Lastly, we are also blessed to work with a professional, calm, devoted, and caring staff that will make the beginning weeks of school run smoothly. Our hope is that during their time at Beth El and beyond, children will deepen their love of learning and develop a thoughtful awareness of themselves and others. Join us on our Reggio-inspired

One of the many special things about Beth El Synagogue Center is our Shabbat kiddush lunch, which provides congregants and visitors an opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new people while enjoying Shabbat lunch together. However, the Keruv Committee is aware that kiddush can be challenging for people with physical disabilities that make it difficult to navigate a large crowd or to carry their own food and drinks to their table. We ask everyone to look out for one another and if you see anyone with a walker or who looks like they may need some assistance, please offer to carry their plate or get them a drink. These small acts of chesed, kindness, can help make sure that everyone is able to enjoy kiddush. If you know in advance that you could use assistance at kiddush, or any other large gathering at Beth El, we can match you with a volunteer who will meet you and provide a helping hand. Please email Elise Schepp at LCmoocow@aol.com or call the Beth El office to ask for a Keruv Committee volunteer.

12

“Keruv” = Hebrew for “to draw closer”

The High Holidays can also be challenging for people with physical or mental disabilities. As we have in years past, we plan to set aside a “quiet room” in Room 106 in the Religious School wing for children on the autism spectrum or anyone else who needs to take a break from the crowds and noise. Children are expected to be accompanied by an adult. We can assign a buddy to stay with a developmentally disabled child for an hour or so to enable the child’s parents to attend services. Please let us know if you would like a buddy assigned to your child. If you are interested in volunteering to help others at kiddush or getting involved with the Keruv Committee, please email Carrie Fox at csfox99@gmail.com or join our next committee meeting on Sunday, October 22, at 7:30pm on Zoom. The link will be on the Beth El website and all are welcome! Carrie Fox Keruv Committee

Shoresh Halev Center for Jewish Music at Beth El: Discover the Sacred: Awakening Communal Prayer We are excited to announce the launch of a new prayer initiative, “Discover the Sacred: Awakening Communal Prayer,” spearheaded by Shoresh Halev Center for Jewish Music at Beth El and Beth El’s clergy team. Until now, Shoresh Halev has focused on filling our classrooms, hallways, and every nook and cranny of the building with music. We can feel the impact of our programming, including music in the Religious and Nursery School, holiday celebrations, Sisterhood gatherings, and especially through our widely attended concerts and events. Music has become an integral part of Beth El’s identity and has lifted the spirits of many. This new prayer initiative aims to build off these accomplishments by a) increasing attendance, participation, and communal singing at all services; b) providing tools for

Israel 360 We’ve been working hard through the summer to develop another series of engaging and informative programs for the coming year that cover a variety of important issues related to Israel through a diversity of voices. Through all our work, we remain committed to our mission: Recognizing our shared sense of “Ahavat Yisrael” - love and support of Israel, Israel 360 is dedicated to raising awareness and fostering respectful and nuanced dialogue about Israel that encourages openness to the diversity of perspectives among the Beth El community and the Jewish community at large. We’re extremely proud of what we accomplished over the last year and finished off with two stellar programs. On May 4th, a unique opportunity presented itself and we hosted an “Israel 360 Breakfast Briefing: Is Israel Heading for a Constitutional Crisis?” Three leading players in the movement to protect democracy in Israel were visiting the US and we arranged for them to come to Beth El - Dr. Ayala Procaccia, retired Justice of the Israel Supreme Court and President of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel (MQG), Dr. Adv. Eliad Shraga, Chairman of MQG,

and Oren Heiman, CEO of one of Israel’s largest tech incubators. It was a fascinating update on what’s happening on the ground in the current judicial crisis and review of what we could expect next in the Knesset. On May 30th, we heard from Eric Mandel, Director of the Middle East Political Information Network, Senior Security Editor of The Jerusalem Post, and Stand With Us Board Member. He gave us a whirlwind tour of the many issues facing Israel from security and demographics to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the many challenges on the international front involving the broader Middle East. Eric’s unique access to all the players in the field gave us an inside view and understanding of these issues. We’re looking forward to another year of programs and respectful dialogue rooted in our community’s deep commitment to and love of Israel. Stay tuned for details on programs and dates coming soon! Refugee Update On June 11th ICNAW welcomed our sixth refugee family to Westchester. Taiba, her husband Ali, and their 3 year old son, Sina, are now getting settled into their new home in White Plains. Taiba worked in the office of the prosecutor in Afghanistan charging perpetrators of domestic abuse. When 1000 prisoners were released, those she put in prison came after her. The family fled Afghanistan with only their backpacks and passports. Their route involved getting to Uruguay and then making their way through South and Central America to the Mexican border. They were featured in the NYTimes in this article: bethelnr.org/nytimes

As for some of the other recently-settled families, Fardin and his family are hoping to move into their new house in White Plains in the near future. Haida and Medina are preparing to take their driving tests. All the children are preparing to start another exciting school year. The Alimi siblings have moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to further their education. The two older siblings are enrolled in college. The youngest sibling is in an extensive English learning program. Volunteers are always needed! If you would like to help please contact: Susan Wolman at swolman9@gmail.com Joycee Wechsler at joywechsler@gmail.com

Volunteer Spotlight: Israel 360 Israel 360 Co-Chairs: Mark Seidenfeld and Tamar Tait; Committee Members: Susan Solow-Dubin, David Reifer, Liz Alderman, Rob Scheinfeld, Andy Collins, Ofri Maliniak and Josh Rehr, with invaluable guidance and support from our Westchester Shlichah, Shachar Liran-Hanan, and our clergy. We’re excited to spotlight the important work of Israel 360, which is dedicated to bringing new voices on Israeli issues to Beth El. Below is an interview with Israel 360’s co-chair, Mark Seidenfeld. 1. What motivated you to start Israel 360? Mark Seidenfeld: I’ve been extremely connected to Israel my entire life. I grew up visiting and spending summers there. I did my junior year abroad in Israel and I have friends and family there. I was brought up in a strongly Zionist family. My parents were Holocaust survivors and Israel was extremely important to them. I have always been committed to learning about it and staying connected to it but I was used to hearing more of the traditional voices around Israel. I was talking to Rabbi Schuck and he asked me if I would start a committee that would bring different voices together from the whole spectrum about important Israeli issues that people are debating. We thought a group that focused on those different voices and brought those different perspectives to Beth El would be worthwhile. My experience on the trip Rabbi Schuck led through Encounter that took members of Beth El to Israel and the West Bank, was a transformative experience for me and highlighted the importance of hearing different voices and understanding different perspectives about issues around Israel.

2. What is the goal of Israel 360? Mark Seidenfeld: It’s really encapsulated in our mission “Recognizing our shared sense of “Ahavat Yisrael” - love and support of Israel, Israel 360 is dedicated to raising awareness and fostering respectful and nuanced dialogue about Israel that encourages openness to the diversity of perspectives among the Beth El community and the Jewish community at large.” We hope the Beth El community can learn from these different perspectives as part of a shared commitment to maintaining a loving relationship with Israel. 3. What are you most proud of from your first year and half as a committee? What have you learned? Mark Seidenfeld: People have been exposed to and earned from new voices. Besides any particular program, I’m really proud of how the committee has gelled and functioned over the past year and is a microcosm of the larger Beth El community. With a mix of perspectives on Israel, from

16

more liberal and progressive to more conservative, everyone shares their opinions in a very respectful way, which is exactly what we’re trying to do. That’s been our greatest accomplishment–we’ve created in our committee what we want for the Beth El community at large. Beyond that, I’m proud that we’ve opened Beth El up to new voices that maybe we never heard before. One example of this was the J Street program, which over two hundred people attended. While it was a challenging program, I think it broke through a more traditional barrier at Beth El to allow for new voices that haven’t been heard here before. Nobody had to agree with them, but the fact that we were able to listen and learn was a big accomplishment. I am also proud we brought in Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh, the first female Druze member of Knesset and the first non-Jewish Shlicha for the Jewish Agency– she was amazing and we were connected with her through our Westchester Shlicha Shachar Liran-Hinan, who has been a tremendous contributor to our committee and has been involved in helping us find so many of the voices and bringing them to Beth El. Our Breakfast Briefing was also a successful program, bringing three leading players in the current movement to protect democracy in Israel - Dr. Adv. Eliad Shraga, Chairman of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel (MQG), Dr. Ayala Procaccia, retired Justice of the Israel Supreme Court and President of MQG, and Oren Heiman, CEO of one of Israel's largest tech incubators. This unique opportunity presented itself and had a great turn out, with seventy-five people joining us on a weekday morning to hear them. It was an educational and eye-opening experience for everyone who attended. 4. What are some Israel 360 programs we can look forward to this year? Mark Seidenfeld: We’re still in the planning process, but we can promise you that it will be a continuation of interesting programs representing different organizations and different voices on issues in Israel. 5. How can people support Israel 360? Mark Seidenfeld: Share your ideas with any committee member about Israel programs that you would like to see that will bring new voices or new perspectives to Beth El. Don’t shy away from perspectives about Israel that may differ from your own and be open to engaging in conversation about those differences in a respectful open minded way to deepen and broaden your understanding of the issues. Also, please come to the Israel 360 events and spread the word to your friends and family!

Shinshinim at Beth El

The Bulletin September 2023

You might have heard people at Beth El say “shinshinim,” but have no idea what it means. Shinshinim, literally based on the letters ‫ש״ש‬, is a shorthand for participants in a sh’nat sherut, “year of national service.” This program is a partnership between The Jewish Agency for Israel ( JAFI) and the Westchester Jewish community. The shinshinim are Israeli high school graduates who defer military service for one year in order to bring their love and enthusiasm for Israel to Westchester and to deepen their own understanding and connections to the Jewish people. Shinshinim go through a rigorous application and training process and come with extensive leadership and education skills and experiences, often as youth group leaders and camp counselors in Israel. They live and work in diaspora Jewish communities around the world, spending their time at Jewish day schools, religious schools, nursery schools, synagogues, JCCs, Jewish summer camps, and more. We have been so fortunate to participate in this program for the last several years thanks to the much-appreciated sponsorship by the Dorothy Fleishaker Religious School Enrichment Fund, which allows us to enhance our student’s connection to Israel through building relationships with Israelis who are only a few years older than them. We are so grateful to the continued support this program receives from Donald Fleishaker and everyone who makes contributions to this fund.

The shinshinim are a highlight of our religious school! The kids love playing soccer with the shinshinim before classes begin or sharing playlists of Israeli music with them. When asked what they know about Israel, for most of the children, the first thing they mention are these teen emissaries– where they are from, what they do in Israel, and what the children want to do when they visit them. Our students get to sample holiday traditions in Israel, such as the special Purim carnival in Holon or biking and rollerblading down the highway on Yom Kippur. They make lasting memories and connections to Israel and with Israelis through joyful learning experiences. This year, we are fortunate to expand the presence of shinshinim at Beth El, with shinshinim who will be working in both the Religious School and Nursery School! They are also eager to participate in various synagogue and teen events, as well as to build strong relationships with people of all ages in our community. We hope you’ll reach out, introduce yourself, and make our shinshinim feel as welcome and valued as possible! If you would like to support this program and other educational enrichments, please consider contributing to the Dorothy Fleishaker Religious School Enrichment Fund at bethelnr.org/donate

An Interview With the Oestreichers The following is a personal reflection from congregants, who created a shul in their home during the pandemic. In order to cope with change and uncertainty, the Oestreichers built a place of worship around a computer monitor, broadcasting Shabbat services. Their story is a testament to how powerful and meaningful a synagogue and a community can be.

out of surgery, She heard the misheberach (healing) prayers for her and her husband from the congregation. A year later, my father had to be rushed to the hospital. I tuned in [to the livestream] on Shabbat. While they were making the misheberach, I looked at the nurses giving him meds, saving his life. We really feel that we are still there. t means so much and it is easy to feel cast away. We never feel cast away here.

David Oestreicher: My folks have had this apartment in Florida since the mid ‘80s. As they got older, I would accompany them as the chauffeur and garbage man. January 2020, we planned to do the usual. It was supposed to be a two month trip. A few days after arrival, my dad had to be hospitalized. While nursing my dad back to health, the pandemic hit. Flash forward to Rosh Hashanah, what do we do? We really want to hear the shofar blown. I [figured I] will try on my own. We got a shofar. It looked really lonely, so we got stained glass. Dad wanted more, the Shabbat shul began to grow. We watched Beth El’s livestream services, which meant so much to all of us. [Anytime] we had a spare moment, I found myself thinking about the next piece of stained glass I could get, or a menorah. During the pandemic, there's no one out, and there's no one around, but I felt this burning need to be in a shul. We tried to transform this room into a shul and it's still a work in progress. On Shabbat it's beautiful, but on holidays it truly shines. Since we first tuned in, we haven’t missed a single “episode” even on some really dire occasions. Just last year my mom, at 91, had a full mastectomy. When she came

Mom will walk up to the monitor and look at the screen to see the kids running around. We’re looking for our friends. It's such joy that it gives us, you can't imagine. It feels like a refuge from the storm. It's not a livestream, it's a lifeline. We feel the love and warmth of the congregation. I know it might have been difficult to make the transition to livestream on Shabbat, even Rabbi Schuck had doubts… We sent pictures to say this is what happens on the other side of livestream land… The ner tamid really made it feel like a shul. We also have the 10 commandments, a beautiful blue glass sculpture, a menorah from Israel, the priestly blessing to remind us it's Shabbat. We set up a few prisms on the window, and we got rainbows: Beth El has rainbows and so do we. We think a rainbow is a reminder of how to live our lives, to be like those rainbows. In the early morning, the rainbows shine through and remind us again we are in a miracle and have to feel appreciated. The miracle includes the world we live in and those we love. It's something about a shul, not necessarily God, but being in a certain place we are reminded. The beautiful intentional prayers uplift your soul. You can be down and have a hard week, but when you hear that you just have to smile, and remember every day is a gift, and what a miracle it is to be alive right now. We are so proud of all the work Beth El has done during the pandemic. That's the spirit of Judaism, it's a greater humanity. After this interview, our member Julius Oestreicher z”l passed away. We want to extend our sincere condolences to the Oestreicher family.
