From the desk of...
Since becoming Superintendent in 2001, I have now attended well over one hundred graduation ceremonies celebrating our students in Bethel. During those years, students have gone on to do amazing things, from serving our country through military careers, to starting their own businesses, to playing in the NFL, to becoming teachers right here in our own district. The education and support our staff provides students over their formative years helps to prepare them to work hard so they can make their hopes and dreams come true.
This has been a banner year for our students. We’ve seen them accepted to two and four year universities, entering the workforce, and enlisting in the armed forces – we even had one student accepted to the Naval Academy. Along with that we also had several state champion sports teams, JROTC drill team champions, and student musicians that made it to the top of their state competitions.
I am proud of our students, and equally proud of our staff. They work hard at their chosen careers to ensure that our students can move forward, working with them to overcome each new obstacle, and always keeping the needs of our students and their families at the forefront.

Congratulations to the Class of 2022, and thank you to each and every staff member for the work you did to help them cross the graduation stage this year.

BOND PROJECT UPDATE
New Naches Trail Elementary

One project that’s beginning to heat up is our new Naches Trail Elementary. When our construction bond passed in 2019, Naches Trail was slated to be a complete remodel and expansion, but a cost analysis determined it would actually be more expensive to modernize the current Naches Trail than it would be to build a new school.
“We’ve hit the ground running and look forward to getting this project going vertical,” said Sara Coccia, Bethel’s Director of Construction and Planning.
The 77,000-square foot school will house 41 general classrooms and is scheduled to be ready for students in the fall of 2023.
Evergreen Elementary Expansion

Once the new Naches Trail Elementary School is completed and staff and students move into the new building, the old Naches Trail Elementary will become a swing school for the Evergreen Elementary staff and students while their renovation and expansion takes place.
This project will modernize the current building, originally built in 1979, and add 15,000 square feet. That will increase the capacity to 625 students.
“That area and that community is really going to benefit from that [project],” said David Hammond, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools, at a recent School Board meeting.
Our planning team is currently conducting traffic studies before the design phase of the project begins in the fall.
2022 and beyond
Graham-Kapowsin High School Expansion
Construction is also underway on the Graham-Kapowsin High School expansion project. The 33,000-square-foot expansion will add a classroom wing, an auxiliary gym and weight room, along with administrative spaces and a larger commons area. The new classroom wing will allow students and faculty members to move from portables back into the main building.
District and school leaders met with community members in May for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the school.
"It's wonderful that we have the opportunity to see this school, which is a wonderful school with wonderful traditions, get expanded, and the portables will finally go away," said Superintendent Tom Seigel.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2023.
Elementary 19
The district recently purchased land in the Lipoma Firs area that will soon play home to our nineteenth elementary school. Thanks to a host of environmental and zoning regulations, it took six years of work for the district to acquire the property.
“If anyone thinks getting property in this area – or really anywhere in Pierce County – is easy or straight forward, it is not,” said Superintendent Tom Seigel. “It takes literally years to work your way through all the bureaucratic requirements.

The roughly 64,000-square-foot school will play home to 550 students. Construction crews will break ground on the project in 2023 and will look to have it completed in 2024.

ParentVue Annual Update

We need your help! Summer is finally here, and that means we are already planning for the fall.
Please take a few minutes to complete your Annual Update in ParentVue now. This update gives us the information we need to plan bus routes for next school year. Given the nationwide driver shortage, it’s vitally important that we have an accurate picture of who will need busing this fall. The update also ensures that schools have current emergency contact information, correct email addresses, and forms such as Attendance and Information Release Authorizations.
Because this information is so
crucial, you will no longer be able to access ParentVUE to view your student’s real-time grades, communicate with staff members, or submit absences until you have completed your Annual Update.
Simply log in to your ParentVue account to fill out your Annual Update. Follow the prompt to ‘Begin Registration’ and select the 2022-2023 Annual Student Update from the drop down menu. Please read through the information on the Welcome page and click ‘Continue’ at the bottom to be guided through a process to review your student's information.
There is a brief video walk-through
of the process to assist you.
If you are not registered with ParentVUE, please check the email you have on file with the district. Each week, an email is sent to all custodial parents who have not yet set up their ParentVUE account, inviting them to do so. Included in that email is a unique activation key, which is necessary for the first login. If you don’t see the email in your inbox, please check your spam folder. If you can’t find the email, please contact your school’s registrar to get an activation code.
Thank you for helping us plan for this fall!
Charging for Meals this Fall
At the conclusion of the 2021-22 school year, the USDA pandemic feeding waivers that allowed us to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students are set to expire.
This means we will be returning to a paid meal service this fall under USDA’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Meals will be charged according to a student’s free, reduced, or paid meal eligibility status.
The Free and Reduced Price Meal
application will be available in late August for families to apply.
With that said, the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) does allow schools with high numbers of low-income children to serve free breakfast and lunch to all students.
There are nine (9) schools in our district that meet the requirements for CEP. All students enrolled in the following CEP eligible schools will receive free meals for the 2022-23 school year:
• Bethel Acceleration Academy
• Bethel Middle School
• Camas Prairie Elementary
• Challenger High School
• Evergreen Elementary
• Centennial Elementary
• Spanaway Elementary
• Spanaway Middle School
• Thompson Elementary
There is a possibility that additional schools will be added to the list at a later date.
Bethel's visiting dignitaries

In February, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland spent some quality time at Spanaway Lake High School. She spoke with distrct leaders and students about a host of important issues facing our community. Strickland, who represents the state's 10th Congressional District, was formerly Mayor of Tacoma. She was elected to her first term in Congress in 2020, replacing longtime Congressman Denny Heck.

In March, Congresswoman Kim Schrier spoke to GrahamKapowsin High School students and staff at a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new school-based health center. The center, which is being funded through a $3.5 million congressional award that Schrier spearheaded, will offer students and staff from GKHS, Frontier Middle, and Nelson Elementary a free clinic for an assortment of medical needs.
In April, we welcomed Senator Patty Murray, Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten, and various local dignitaries to a special groundbreaking ceremony for a brand new Bethel Family Support Center. The center will offer local students and families a host of much needed services, including free health care, food and clothing banks, and an array of educational opportunities.

Most successful careers don’t begin with a lost bet, but there’s always an exception that proves the rule.
Staci Sherrod is that exception. As a college student, she thought she might make a good engineer. That all changed when she lost a bet with a friend and had to enroll in an introduction to teaching class.
She fell in love with the profession, and more than 30 years later she still finds joy in working with students.
After graduating college, Sherrod began her career in 1992 as a math sub at Spanaway Lake High School. The job was great, but she learned that teaching students not much younger than herself has some drawbacks.

“I loved math, but I struggled teaching kids so close in age with me,” she said. “I was reported to the principal for trying to impersonate a teacher on picture day. We had a good laugh when he confirmed that I was a ‘real’ teacher.”
In 1994 she found her home at Elk Plain, and she’s been happily teaching math there ever since. Sherrod has taught several grade levels throughout her career, but her sweet spot has always been middle school. She especially loves the way middle school teachers collaborate, and she has found success with teaching partners who focus on ELA while she covers math.
There are so many things about teaching at EPSOC that Sherrod loves, but it’s the connections she had made with families that make her return every year.
“I love to see the children of former students and I can tell stories about their mom or dad as a student,” she said. “I also love to see former students coming into Bethel to teach, and working with the same people year after year.”
BETTING ON TEACHING HAS ITS REWARDS
Our Multilingual Education (MLE) students come from a wide range of cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds. Kathleen Harris has been teaching MLE students in Bethel for the past six years. She knows these kids come to school with a unique set of backgrounds, knowledge and experiences.
“My role is to help create a learning environment that supports students’ assets and focus on what they can do,” she said. “We want to build their confidence in themselves as well as provide them with the knowledge and skills to be selfsufficient and socially responsible people.”
Harris works with students in small groups or one-on-one to bolster students' language development.
“We provide scaffolds and supports to help students access the information they’re learning in the classroom,” she said. “We do lots of activities to support vocabulary development, we provide students with scaffolds to help express their learning and ideas, and we give students opportunities to engage and share with one another.”
This is Harris’ 17th year in the classroom. “I became a teacher because I really enjoy working with kids,” she said. “For me, it’s so rewarding when a student has an 'a-ha' moment and something they’ve been working on suddenly clicks and makes sense. It always makes my day!”
