The Fisher Family at Rose Tree Park in Media

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

It’s that time to March Into Spring with a spring in our step. The days in March are growing warmer with longer daylight, with one day even a full hour of longer daylight! Get to bed earlier on Saturday night March 11th so you can prepare to trade an hour of sleep for an extra hour of daylight in the evening of March 12thDaylight Savings Time is upon us!

New hope springs from anticipation of experiencing more pleasant weather as this month continues, with some annual signs of Spring showing up. From those first crocus flowers we see popping up in the grass, to those sounds of Little Leaguers popping balls into the outfield, we hear baseball again on the radio and see it on TV now that Phillies Spring Training is swinging for the fences to duplicate their run to the 2023 World Series as they did last year.

Our first anniversary of sorts is upon us. This new March issue is now our sixth edition of Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors. And so, now that our Winter effort is coming to an end, and the first Spring for your new hometown magazine is here, it’s time for me to ask a few questions so you can better understand why I launched this publication with the help of our Charter Advertising Sponsors.

Newtown, Edgmont, friends and neighbors: How are we doing? Have we delivered on our promised mission and motto, to be Bringing People Together through a unique brand of social-media-in-print? You’d know if, when you first noticed this new March issue had arrived in your mail, you imagined a simple pleasure ahead, knowing you’d likely find time to read the latest issue of your new hometown magazine? That’s how you know. And that’s how we know we’re fulfilling our mission. Our advertising Sponsors know it too, because most of them are also advertising Sponsors of our Marple Friends & Neighbors and Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazines. And I am sure those readers clearly have rewarded their Sponsors for supporting the launch and growth of their hometown magazine by choosing to do business with them first, whenever possible, with gratitude for their support of those local communities.

If you own a business in Edgmont Township or Newtown Township, consider coming to The Party, which is Bringing People Together in print and online at: www.TheNEMag. com. To learn why, see my “Bringing People Together” feature this month on page 12.

I know you’ll love reading this new March issue which Sheila and our designer Kim Cesati have teamed up to put a Spring back in our step this month.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day all,

Dear Residents,

Welcome to the start of the spring season! Though March often feels like one of those in-between months, there is always plenty to look forward to. We will spring forward to longer, brighter days, beautiful yellow daffodils will bloom, and the sounds of squeaky basketball courts will fill the air during March Madness.

Music fills the air this month as we introduce you to The Fisher Family. For Joe, Paige and the kids, making music and memories matters most. Our Business Profile introduces you to Joe Soster and David Linn Cook of Waterproofing One, two experts in protecting homes from water damage. And if you’re looking for some fun, family activities, check out our calendar of events on page 17.

We are always looking for more Newtown Edgmont families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

A Dry Home Is a Happy Home

Preventative maintenance to keep water away from the foundation walls of your home may be one of the best ways to protect your property. It’s a good thing our Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors have not one but two experts in the areas of water damage restoration or basement waterproofing. Joe Soster, owner of Waterproofing One, has teamed up with David Linn Cook, who has been our residential weatherization and waterproofing expert for the past three years, and together they deliver excellence, proficiency and professional results.

Joe grew up in Springfield, and from the time he was a teenager, he was working in the construction industry alongside his father, who was a land developer and builder. Over the years, he worked in numerous roles in the construction industry and established himself as an expert in waterproofing and structural repairs. In 1993 he started his own business Waterproofing One, headquartered in Phoenixville, PA.

Waterproofing One provides a variety of waterproofing services, including installing hydrostatic pressure relief systems (French drains and sump pumps); exterior waterproofing (excavation, special membranes vapor barriers and exterior drain systems); basement waterproofing coatings; all types of foundation repairs, masonry epoxy crack injections, wall pins for block walls, carbon fiber straps for concrete and block walls, carbon fiber stitches; and lawn grading, surface drains, exterior lawn drains, flow well tanks, gutter guards, downspout drainage, etc.

What sets Joe and his team apart from other waterproofing companies is the relationships they establish with clients. “Our customers trust our commitment to work excellence, budget and schedule,” said Joe. “We make sure our clients get expected results and we look at their satisfaction as the cornerstone of our success.”

Waterproofing One pays attention to the smallest details of the projects they work on. They can handle everything from roofing, basement waterproofing, water damage repair and water restoration projects down to other general contractor services. They understand that basement waterproofing is one of the best ways to keep property values high while saving a customer’s foundation from potential disastrous situations brought on by rain.

As an expert in waterproofing and weatherization, Joe understands the damage moisture can do to both the interior and exterior of the home. “If water seeps into your basement, that is a bad sign,” said Joe. “Basement leaks can mean your foundation is in need of repair to keep the walls from cracking or growing mold which can be deadly to your family.”

Joe explained that in order to prevent wet basements, it is important to understand where the water is coming from. The four common sources of water that seeps into the basement are surface water running down foundation walls; groundwater in water-saturated soils being pushed into the basement

by hydrostatic pressure; storm sewer water from the municipal storm sewer system backing up into the home’s existing perimeter foundation drain and leaking into the basement; and sanitary sewer water from a combined municipal storm/sanitary sewer system backing up into the home’s drain system, causing sewer water to come up through sink drains and floor drains on lower levels.

Joe recently added David Linn Cook to his team as his chief estimator. Longtime friends from back in their Springfield junior high school days they’ve worked together in various settings including David’s business. It was at their recent high school reunion that they reconnected and while discussing their combined experience decided now was the time to collaborate. “We’re excited to join forces,” said Dave. “I like to joke that we know each other better than we know ourselves.”

After high school, Dave earned a degree in Business Management from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, and for many years he worked as a laborer, roofer and as a weatherization and waterproofing specialist. He soon realized that he had a keen eye for finding water leaks that others couldn’t find.

As the owner of his own weatherproofing company for 30 years, Dave was known by his customers for being sincere and passionate about his work. “I immensely enjoy talking to my customers and finding the solution to a leak problem,” Dave said. “When it comes to weatherproofing problems, it’s not always a ‘one size fits all.’ Every job is custom and sometimes that means trying one solution at a time.”

What Joe and Dave find most rewarding about their work is the joy of knowing that they’ve helped people maintain a dry and safe environment in their homes and businesses. “It's satisfying to see when people are able to use their basement for many different purposes when they couldn't before,” said Joe. “It's also good to see people in a healthier environment when their basements have been waterproofed.”

If your home has a crawl space or basement, the best way to protect it is to call on experts who understand how moisture enters a home and how to maintain waterproofing systems. Joe says: “A dry home is a happy home!” Waterproofing One is a full-service waterproofing and basement foundation repair company servicing three states, including but not limited to the following counties in PA: Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Berks and Bucks – in Delaware: New Castle and Wilmington –in New Jersey: Gloucester, Camden and Burlington County. The Fisher Family: Making Music and Memories

Meet the Fisher Family: Joe, Paige, Isabella, Pierce and their pup Rylie. The Fishers found their forever home in Newtown Square and enjoy taking meaningful moments to make music and memories.

Joe grew up in Folsom with his parents and sister, Christine. He attended Edgewood Elementary School, Ridley Middle School and graduated from Ridley High School, where he participated in the jazz band and the pit orchestra for the school musicals. “I started playing saxophone when I was in third grade,” said Joe. “I have always loved playing and performing for others.”

Joe’s love for music continued at West Chester University. It led him to pursue an undergraduate degree in Music Education with a Jazz Minor and then a post-graduate degree in Music Performance. While at West Chester, he organized and performed in a series of campus-wide concerts to raise money for VH1 Save the Music. Joe continued to make a difference by co-founding an organization to unite and support the music ensembles on campus with the help of the Student Government Association.

Today, Joe is a performer, educator and creator of music. He is currently in his 15th year with the Rose Tree Media School District. Over the years, Joe has taught choir and founded the musical program at Springton Lake Middle School, directed one of the jazz bands at Penncrest High School and served as the music coordinator for the school district. Joe is now the music teacher at Indian Lane Elementary School.

Joe explained that he has taken his love of music and education to a new level by creating video content to teach young people how to play instruments both alone and with others. “I am the founder of www.FishyBeats.com, which teaches kids to keep a beat to fun and popular songs,” Joe explained. “The main focus is on recorder and boom whackers (plastic tubes that are pitched), but I also create body percussion videos that teach kids to keep a beat without instruments.”

“I enjoy my career and love teaching the students of Rose Tree Media,” Joe remarked. “If I am not playing music at school, you can usually find me playing music somewhere else! I love playing different instruments and am never afraid of a new musical challenge.” Joe said that although he is known as a

saxophonist, he frequently plays guitar, keyboard, and even sings. He has performed all genres of music along the east coast with various groups. These days, he mainly plays solo or with the Rad and Kell band and occasionally plays at weddings.

Joe’s wife Paige is originally from Hamilton, NJ, where she grew up with her parents and two brothers. She went to Yardville Heights Elementary School and graduated from Hamilton High West, where she was a cheerleader and active in her graduating class activities.

After graduation, Paige went to community college for her undergraduate degree, then attended Dixon School of Nursing. She became a Registered Nurse and received her BSN from Penn State University before earning her Master of Nursing in leadership and management from Western Governors University.

Paige has worked as an Emergency Room Nurse for the past eight years and also works as a recovery room nurse from time to time. “I love that every day is different and that I continue to learn new things daily,” Paige said. “Thankfully, nursing has allowed me the flexibility I need to maximize my time at home raising my children.”

Paige and Joe Fisher

Paige and Joe’s love story began in Sea Isle City, NJ, where, coincidentally, many of our featured couples’ love stories began. Perhaps Sea Isle should consider changing their slogan from Smile, You’re in Sea Isle to Sea Isle, to From One Kiss to Wedded Bliss.

It was the summer of 2016 when Joe was renting a beach house with fellow teachers, and Paige was just two doors away, staying with her friend Brooke from nursing school. “Paige and I met on the steps of the Purple House on 42nd Street, one of Sea Isle’s original homes that was built in Philadelphia and "planted" in Sea Isle City back in 1900,” Joe explained. “My friends and I rented that home for many summers.”

Paige said that her friend Brooke knew some of Joe’s roommates and that the two of them planned to meet up with Brooke’s friends at the purple house one night towards the end of the summer. Joe was there and had just finished playing music with the band “Rad and Kell” at the Carousel when he noticed Paige. “We clicked right away and learned that we share a love for music and a deep passion for our chosen careers,” he said. “We had our first official date at a Blink 182 concert on Montage Mountain in Scranton, and the rest is history.”

Their romance continued into the summer of 2017 when Joe played weekly at the Carousel in Sea Isle. “He proposed to me on stage in front of our friends and family,” Paige said. “Joe

was playing his final song, Jersey Girl by Bruce Springsteen, when he popped the question. It was so special because Joe arranged for my family and friends to come out right after I said yes.”

Joe and Paige married the following year at the Mendenhall Inn in Chadds Ford and honeymooned in Jamaica. They began married life in Folsom, where Joe had been living, before moving into their forever home in Newtown Square in 2019. “We wanted to find a community that would be a great place to raise children,” Joe explained. “We are so fortunate to have found a home in a vibrant neighborhood with annual block parties, 4th of July red, white and blue outdoor game competitions and winter holiday festivities complete with a visit from Santa himself.”

Isabella (Bella) is Paige and Joe’s 2½-year-old daughter. “Bella is ALL personality,” laughed Paige. “Like her dad, she loves music and dancing and says hello to everyone she sees on our neighborhood walks.” Paige also said that Bella had shown interest in helping bake goodies for family and friends this past holiday season.

Their son Pierce is ten months old and affectionately called “Peek” by his big sister. His parents said that Pierce loves to go with the flow, jump in his jumperoo, and his face lights up when he sees his sister.

Yes, Paige and Joe have two children, but the title of firstborn no doubt goes to Rylie, their 5-year-old Beagle/Schnauzer mix. Paige and Joe rescued Rylie on the day they got home from their honeymoon when she was just a puppy. “Rylie is so gentle and loving with Bella and Pierce,” said Joe. “She is a big part of the Fisher family, and she certainly knows it!”

For the Fishers, quality time with family and friends is a priority. Joe’s parents still live in Folsom, and Paige’s parents are just an hour away in Hamilton. They love to stay active in their neighborhood but also take time for fun and sun in Sea Isle. Some of their favorite spots at the shore are the Cape May Zoo, Mike’s Seafood, LouDogs and Fractured Prune Donuts. But no matter where they travel, home is where their hearts belong.

Joe and Paige, thank you for sharing your story with our Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors. With all the music in the air, there’s bound to be lots of lovin’ everywhere!

How-To Guide for Healthy

The many benefits of houseplants are well documented, from improving air quality, increasing humidity and adding beauty to your home. Even a few textural, leafy specimens can make a difference, especially during cooler months. Winter houseplant care can be easy as long as a few simple requirements are met with proper light exposure, placement, watering and fertilizing.

Most houseplants require bright, indirect light to thrive, so in the winter it may mean placing them closer to windows or other light sources such as lamps or grow lights. Even opening the curtains more can make a big difference. Be sure to not place them near a heat source, vent or door where they may receive frequent drafts.

The most important tip for houseplant owners is to not overwater – especially if giving more light is a challenge. The key is to water thoroughly (with room temperature water) so that it drains out the bottom of the pot and not to water again until the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. This is especially true in wintertime when houseplant growth slows or stops. Most indoor plants prefer to be on the dry side soil-wise; soggy soil can lead to disease and insect problems. They do love humidity however, so frequent misting with a spray bottle is always helpful. Grouping indoor plants together is also helpful as they will share each other’s humidity from their own respiration.

While using an indoor plant fertilizer is important throughout the year, reducing feeding in the winter is best as plants do not take in as many nutrients when it’s cold and less light is available. There are many houseplant fertilizers to choose from and those with lower Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium (NPK) ratios are best. There are also products geared towards specific types of indoor plants such as cacti and orchids.

When the time comes to repot your houseplant, ensure success by using a high quality potting soil and appropriate size container (just a touch larger than the pot it originally came in). It’s also essential to have at least one drainage hole in the container, roots must be able to breathe and not sit in water or soil that is constantly wet.

Last but not least, indoor plants always appreciate having their leaves dusted off and being rotated on occasion. During the winter, leaves will reach towards the light even more and by rotating the pot, the plant will grow more evenly.

By following proper winter houseplant care, you can keep your plants happy and thriving, just when you need a connection to nature the most! E

Bringing People Together

Think of any local business in Newtown or Edgmont townships, or just beyond in nearby Media, Glen Mills, Willistown, or Upper Providence townships. Now consider if that business could remain in business year after year, if they didn’t work to guard and to improve their reputation, particularly in the local communities they know are important to their financial success? No, of course not. Because if they did not, the business would slide towards failure. We’d likely say: “They’ve lost me as a customer.” The short reason why is because the business lost their purpose

When a business begins to recognize it’s losing more customers than it’s gaining, the most common reason is because top-ofthe-mind awareness of the business has faded from the memory of too many of its past customers, whose failed memory causes

them to no longer talk about the business with purpose to their friends and neighbors, making it even harder to gain needed new customers. How can this all be turned around? The same way top-of-the-mind awareness of any business is fueled – by the business being noticed as a business with recognized purpose!

In recent years consulting firms have come to the rescue to improve business reputations by sourcing new Internet content that claims higher search engine directory rankings over less favorable content about a business, which can also leap over favorable content about a competitive business. Such wizardry is technical subterfuge that can fulfill an intended purpose to improve the reputation of a business by manipulating search engine rankings, but can do so even more when the elevated online reputation of the business includes its social purpose that impacts society, in turn impacting the social perception of the business.

Social purpose demonstrated by a business has become the gateway of business reputation. Studies show that the majority of Americans expect the companies they do business with, to lead with purpose, and are ready to reward those companies that are Purpose-driven, with their stronger loyalty, which builds deeper customer bonds and more favorable widespread business reputation to more quickly increase a customer base, particularly with the kind of customers more willing to be brand advocates of the business.

The 2018 Porter Novelli/Cone purpose Study: How to Build Deeper Bonds, Amplify Your Message & Expand Your Consumer Base, revealed that 78% of Americans believe businesses must do more than just make money; they must positively impact society as well. It also showed that 77% of Americans feel a stronger emotional connection to Purpose-driven companies, while 66% would switch their buying habits to buy from Purpose-driven companies and 68% are more willing to share that company’s content with their social networks. Spring Forward Into Your Home’s Exterior Maintenance

Going into a new spring season with warmer temperatures is a great time to evaluate your home’s exterior after the long winter. Remember your house is about to face massive temperature swings with wind driven rain storms in the coming months. Here are a few things to look for to make sure your home can withstand the upcoming seasonal weather fluctuations:

• If you have access to attic space, look for water staining on the underside of the roof decking. Pay special attention around any pipe/vent penetrations in the roof, as these areas are the most vulnerable to water/ice/snow infiltration.

• Inspect the roof from the ground, looking for any missing/ damaged or misplaced shingles.

• Notice if the edges of the shingles are frayed or cracked. (The average shingle life is +/- 20 to 30 years)

• Look for moss growth or staining on the shingles as this can be a sign of water damage.

• Make sure there’s no tree damage from falling limbs or debris laying on the roof or in the gutters.

• Inspect the gutters and downspouts from the ground to make sure they have been draining properly. (Check when it's raining for best results.)

• Look for gutters/downspouts pulling away from the house due to snow/ice loads.

• Make sure all downspouts are draining away from the house.

• Look for holes in soffits. (During the cold, squirrels/chipmunks/etc. love to dig.)

• Make sure the fascia and rake boards or capping are still in place.

• View around the chimney looking for missing or damaged counter flashing, cracks in the mortar/stucco or massive staining at the top of the chimney.

• Windows and doors sometimes fog up, which is a sign that the seals are broken or worn.

• The trim around doors and windows should be inspected for holes, rot, cracking or nail pops.

• Inspect your siding, looking for missing/misplaced, cracked or broken pieces.

• Review the stucco or stone facades again looking for cracks, discoloration or damaged sections.

Of course the best way to inspect your roof/siding/chimneys/etc. is up close but we do not recommend homeowners climb ladders to complete these inspections. Please let a professional do the dangerous work, if you see anything that looks out of place. E

The truth is that most Americans want the senseless violence among our youth and in our country to stop. That is where responsible ownership, firearm education and safe storage is a contributing solution for all of us.

Part of educating current or potential gun owners includes teaching these BASIC SAFETY RULES:

The bottom line is that responsible ownership means that you can never be too careful or too cautious with any type of weapon. If you own or are interested in owning a firearm, talk to your children about what responsibility and safety mean in terms of any weapon. Don’t assume you have it hidden where they’ll never find it, and so it’s therefore safe. They will find it and because it was never discussed, it could become a fascination for them. Along these same lines, teach kids the differences between real and make believe, as well as the very serious consequences that confusing the two can have, even if for just a moment in time. E

1. Treat a firearm as if it’s loaded, even when you’re POSITIVE it is not.

2. Keep it pointed in the safest direction at all times.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until or unless you are 100% ready to take a shot.

4. Know your target and the surrounding area.

5. Learn the mechanical workings, such as how to load and unload it, as well as how to clear a malfunction.

6. Store your gun and ammunition securely, so that no unauthorized use can occur.

Some common sense rules that are important to remember are as follows:

1. Do not handle a weapon if you are depressed.

2. Do not shoot in the air for celebration – what goes up will come down.

3. Don’t shoot at flat or hard surfaces where a projectile could ricochet.

4. Never hand a firearm to someone, or take it from someone, until you’ve verified that it’s unloaded and the chamber’s clear.

5. Alcohol, drugs and certain other medications are NEVER a good mix with a firearm.

6. When shooting, stay behind the line of fire. Proximity too close may cause hearing or sight damage, so wear protection.

You Can Extend the Life of Your Carpets

With spring almost here, it’s time to think about spring cleaning. From power washing the exterior to deep cleaning the interior, when it’s time to open the windows, many homeowners also invite professionals in to do what they do best to ensure that their home gets a thorough cleaning.

Carpets require professional service one to two times a year, to not only deep clean and sanitize but to extend the life of a carpet. Besides hiring a professional, there are steps a homeowner can take to also help a carpet last longer. The most important thing for a carpet is regular vacuuming. A good vacuuming daily — especially for the high traffic areas — will remove dry soil and debris that can scratch and damage the fibers. Once damaged, light reflects differently off those fibers and a “wear pattern” will begin to show. Regular vacuuming will help prevent that from happening, and will lift the fibers regularly. When that regular maintenance is combined with a professional cleaning every 6 – 12 months, your carpets can last for many years.

It’s also important to consider high-traffic areas, where the carpet meets directly to a door such as from your kitchen to the

outside or from a bath to a hallway or bedroom. A doormat or throw rug should be placed at those spots, to catch as much dirt and debris as possible. This will protect the carpet where it is most vulnerable and susceptible to damage. Throw rugs should be laundered or replaced as needed, so they can continue to protect the carpet.

When purchasing new carpet, it’s always important to get the best padding you can afford. An important purpose of padding is to protect your carpeting by keeping the underside of your carpet (its backing) from wearing against the bare floor. It will also help with the impact of heavy furniture and foot traffic. Commercial applications do have glue down options but for residential use, it’s best to discuss with your carpet installer what your best options are. Don’t settle for “free padding” that big-box stores advertise.

The combination of regular vacuuming, higher-grade padding, strategic rug placement and semiannual or annual professional cleaning will help keep your carpets and house cleaner longer, and will also extend the life of your carpet, so you can enjoy it for many years. E

Make Sure Your Yard is Ready

Winter is on its way out, which means that warmer temperatures will be beckoning us outdoors again. You may start to notice that your lawn and landscaping are in desperate need of some serious upkeep and updating. Spring clean up, weeding and mulching are great ways to get your landscape ready to look lush and beautiful again, as well as bring you joy and satisfaction in the coming spring and summer months.

With the warmer weather, you may start to notice an increase in the pest population within your yard. The increase in mosquitoes, ticks, Spotted Lanternflies and other pests can make even the loveliest garden, patio or deck not only a nuisance, but can cause you and your family to limit spending time outdoors. So adding a plan to deal with these pests can be another important item to add to your outdoor maintenance checklist.

Also, now is the time to set up and stay on a monthly care program, to properly care for your landscaping, trees and garden beds, to ensure you create a well maintained look for your home the entire season. Consider adding an eye-catching pop of color near your front walkway or entrance, in your garden beds and borders or around your patio, deck or pool area. Consider adding some window boxes and planters for colorful flowering plants and complementary vines.

The spring is also the perfect time to move forward with your new hardscape plan, by looking into the logistics of the construction, design and installation. An outdoor entertainment and living area adds a whole new sense of relaxation and escape, plus it adds both curb-appeal and value to your home.

Get a start on the clean up by eliminating debris build up that occurred over the long winter months, by removing leaf and branch debris from turf areas and flower beds. As tempting as it may be to get started on the fun stuff, like planting seasonal annual flowers and plants, you must first weed and adequately mulch your flower beds.

Some popular ideas for new hardscape plans include fireplaces, outdoor kitchens/pizza ovens, patios, walkways, retaining walls, paver borders and stone edging. New and attractive landscape lighting options will help showcase your newly designed areas, allowing you to enjoy them during the day and night.

Warmer days are right around the corner. Treat yourself to an enjoyable outdoor living experience this year by planning and taking action now! E

The 1950s Cold War Came to Delco

World War II ended in August 1945, but the “Cold War” essentially began at the same time. The struggle between democratic capitalism and authoritarian communism lasted for most of the 20th century. The possibility of an exchange of nuclear weapons was very real in the 1950s, and so Civil Defense became the watchword. To protect likely military and civilian targets, we installed missile bases surrounding our cities. Philadelphia, then the 3rd-largest city in the country, was one of the protected cities, with a dozen Nike missile bases ringing the city, including Site PH-75 right off of West Chester Pike in Edgmont.

The Edgmont base was completed in 1955. Each site had three parts: a radar system to detect incoming aircraft and direct the outgoing missiles; with 1–3

underground “magazines,” each with four launchers; and an area for personnel, headquarters, barracks, mess, recreation hall and motor pool. The base was staffed by 109 soldiers, initially Regular Army but later PA National Guard units. The initial missile was a Nike (Greek Goddess of Victory) Ajax, with a 25-mile range that could be fired at incoming bombers. At least one launcher was on constant alert.

Over the next few years, as missiles improved in range and power, the new generation – Hercules – were installed in area sites. While the Ajax was a conventional warhead, the Hercules missiles were nuclear.

Having a missile site in your neighborhood was a two-edged sword. While it may have given some sense of protection, it had its own risks. In May, 1958, eight fully armed missiles blew up “in a furious mushroom of fire and death,” at a Nike base in Middletown, NJ, killing 10 men. Those missiles were not the nuclear missiles, or the results could have been much worse.

While anti-war sentiment grew in the 1960s, it came earlier to Edgmont in 1958, when a group of 50 young activists held a silent vigil for peace at the entrance to the base. That peace vigil lasted several days.

Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) spelled the end to the Nike bases. The new missiles traveled too quickly to be intercepted by the Nikes, which were designed for slower-flying bombers. The Nike bases were all closed down, including Edgmont in September 1968. The site continues to be used as a U.S. Army Reserve Center. Cold War traces remain there, as well as in the Don Guanella woods, which once hosted an anti-aircraft battery.

Recalling The Eagles Pep Rally Will Keep Hope Alive

Atrip to the Super Bowl calls for celebration, and although our beloved birds didn’t come home with a win, we did our best to send them soaring into the big game!

Media Borough was transformed into a sea of green on Sunday, February 5th, when thousands of local residents lined State Street in downtown Media for Delaware County’s Birds Pep Rally Parade.

Philadelphia Eagles fans gathered under sunny skies to enjoy the parade and pep rally that featured Kane Kalas, recording artist and son of the late legendary Philadelphia broadcaster

Harry Kalas. Kane entertained the crowd from the steps of Spasso’s restaurant and also served as the parade emcee.

Other entertainment featured the Mummers, school marching bands and local dance troupes. A long line of antique cars and local business vans and trucks also showed their support for our beloved birds with their fun and creative decorations.

Thank you to Media Borough for hosting the parade in Everyone’s Hometown, and to the Media Police and Fire Departments for keeping the community safe. A big thanks to the restaurants and businesses for opening their doors and to the thousands of residents who came out with their Eagles Gear to cheer on the birds and show their Philly Pride! E

Pennsylvania is home to some of the best trout fishing in the eastern United States. Our state offers over 86,000 miles of streams and rivers, including over 15,000 miles of designated Wild Trout Water. Here in our area, we are fortunate to be home to popular well-stocked trout fishing locations like Ridley Creek, Dismal Run, Darby Creek, and Ithan and Chester Creeks. Our local trout hatchery program, run by Delco Anglers and Conservationists, raises and releases the fish into our local streams every year in time for the start of the trout fishing season.

Opening Day for trout season this year is Saturday, April 1st. Anglers can start preparing for the big day by purchasing their 2023 Pennsylvania fishing licenses and renewals online at www.FishAndBoat.

c r i s s y e v e r h a r t p ho t o g r a p h y

com, the FishBoatPA mobile app, or by visiting a nearby retail issuing agent. To participate in trout fishing and keep trout, anglers ages 16 and older require both a fishing license and a trout permit.

Trout fishing continues to grow in popularity for good reason. Trout are gorgeous, elusive in nature, hard fighters and are at home in some of the most pristine and picturesque waterways in the country. Brown trout—both wild and stocked—are the most common species in most PA rivers and streams.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to the sport, a fishing license is truly your ticket to outdoor fun for the whole year, opening the door to fishing adventures that can become lifelong memories. If this

is your first time, you’ll want to visit one of our local pro shops to get the tools and expert advice you need to succeed.

Having the right gear will make all the difference. Because trout are predominantly cold-water stream fish, you’ll want to invest in a good pair of waders for those times you must jump in to cross that cold creek! A trout vest will pay for itself in no time by giving you plenty of space to carry tackle and all the essential tools you’ll need for a day on the creek.

Trout can be caught easily on both spinning and fly rods, so pick what best suits you. If you’re a spin fisherman, choose a shorter and more sensitive rod, like a 5 to 6-foot light or ultralight model. For fly anglers, the most popular rods are 7 ½ to 9-foot models with either floating or weight-forward lines. Be sure to purchase the right bait for your fishing method, as there are a wide variety of options out there.

A landing net is vital when fishing for trout. Because trout are strong fighters and fishing lines are light, catching them with a net will not only help save your fishing line but will also help protect the trout’s delicate skin so they can swim away unharmed when you release them. But releasing trout from your hook can often be challenging, so having a good pair of forceps is important. Trout have teeth and narrow bony mouths, making unhooking them a chore for even the most skilled anglers.

Now is the time to get prepared for a successful spring trout season. Gather your gear, bait, rods and reels and get ready to make memories! E

A Reverse Mortgage Could Be Just What You Need

While a reverse mortgage is not for everyone, in the right situation a reverse mortgage may be perfect for you. As life expectancy increases across the country, many retirees are finding their investment nest egg is insufficient to meet their long term needs. A customized reverse mortgage may be an excellent way to insure you will be capable of providing for yourself in retirement, without needing to sell off assets. To qualify for a reverse mortgage, borrowers must own their home, be 62 years old or older and meet some basic income requirements.

The only out-of-pocket costs to set up a reverse mortgage are loan origination fees, mortgage insurance premiums and customary mortgage settlement fees. These fees are required and regulated by the federal government.

Over the years, there have been many misconceptions about the details of how this federally regulated program works, the biggest is that the bank assumes ownership of your home in a reverse mortgage. This is not the case. Just like a traditional mortgage, the lender places a lien on your home to make sure the loan is repaid. Another common misconception is that a borrowers’ estate or children will be responsible for repaying the reverse mortgage. A reverse mortgage loan can only be repaid out of the proceeds from the sale of the home.

There are several ways a reverse mortgage can provide you with tax-free extra cash with no monthly payments required until the house is sold; a lump sum payout, a growing line of credit for life, monthly cash payments or any combination of the three.

With the lump sum payment, you can pay off an existing mortgage on your home to eliminate monthly mortgage payments. With the line of credit, you gain a credit limit that grows over time. If you choose the monthly cash payments option, you’ll receive a lifetime tax-free income stream.

The repayment of a reverse mortgage occurs when one of the following happens:

• The death of all borrowers including a qualified, nonborrowing spouse on the loan

• The sale of the property

• When the property is no longer the primary residence of at least one borrower for a period greater than 12 months

• If the property falls into disrepair and the borrowers are unable or unwilling to make repairs

• If the borrowers fail to pay property taxes and insurance costs

When any of the above happen, the home owners or executor of the owner’s estate has six months, plus two 3 month extensions to sell the property. The outstanding balance of the reverse mortgage loan and its accrued interest are paid from the sale proceeds. If they exceed the proceeds, the borrowers, their estate and their heirs are not liable for the shortfall. The shortfall is paid to the lender by a federal insurance program, meaning the borrower’s other assets remain untouched. E
