Creating the Outdoor Space of Your Dreams
If you’re thinking about sprucing up your outdoor living space, our local expert, TJ Warner of JHL Landscaping, has the experience and know-how you need to make your vision a reality.
TJ (short for Thomas Joseph) grew up in the Marple-Newtown area, and these days, he and his family are happy to call Edgmont home. His dad owned a construction company that built homes on the Main Line. Since age 12, TJ has been on construction sites, watching and learning what’s required to transform parcels of land into beautiful homes surrounded by lush lawns and landscapes. He loved all the construction machinery, the noise and dirt, the busy-ness, and the working with — and patiently waiting through — weather and other challenges. TJ was lucky to discover very early in life exactly where he feels happiest: outdoors, using dirt, rocks and other natural materials to help his customers create the outdoor space of their dreams.
While TJ attended Marple Newtown High School, he worked part-time for several Delaware County lawncare and landscaping companies. That hands-on experience helped him confidently choose his future career. Soon after he earned his Bachelor’s degree from West Chester University (WCU), TJ
purchased JHL Landscaping, a small local lawn care business that included one truck, one trailer, four employees and some turf management equipment.
TJ met his future wife, Samantha (“Sam”), while they were both attending WCU. Sam grew up in Wyckoff, NJ, and had chosen WCU to prepare for a teaching career. Shortly after they got engaged, a serious foot injury forced TJ to need someone he could trust to help with his business. Sam left teaching, and started handling the office duties. TJ and Sam got married in 2013, and are now parents to four kids, and they're loving life in Edgmont.
Most people can easily appreciate how beautiful lush landscaping creates an inviting natural environment. Few people know, however, how much creativity and scientific knowledge are required to design, create and maintain such natural beauty. JHL’s professionally trained Landscape Architect and Design specialists have the knowledge and decades of experience needed to make their residential and commercial customers’ landscape design ideas obtainable and affordable. They’re experts at educating you about all options for creating beautiful gardens full of variety and color as well as lush “low maintenance” lawns, shrubs and plants. They’re also experts at designing and installing landscape lighting, an excellent way to enhance the beauty of your outside spaces and planted beds.
Hardscape design and masonry refers to structures added to a landscape design to enhance your outdoor living space. Some examples are patios, walkways, stairs, border and edge stone, retaining walls, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, pools and fencing. Hardscape design and construction requires in-depth understanding of appropriate and durable materials, space requirements, irrigation systems and proper grading to ensure adequate drainage. JHL can handle all hardscape design, construction, masonry, installation and maintenance projects. Their in-house specialists work with each customer, side by side, from the initial hardscape design meeting until the project is completed to the customer’s satisfaction.
To stay beautiful and inviting, landscapes require regular and seasonal maintenance. JHL offers many services to reliably manage it all: Spring and Fall clean-up, mulching landscape

beds, monthly landscape care, and regular lawn mowing and maintenance, which includes fertilization, weed and insect control, core aeration and overseeding. Other services offered include seasonal planting, corrective pruning, drainage and irrigation solutions, holiday decor and gutter cleaning. They’ve got the top-notch equipment, professionally trained teams, and industry know-how to keep it all looking tip-top!
JHL Landscaping has a hauling division whose trucks transport their own materials to their job sites. The trucks are also often hired out by large construction companies. And JHL’s “sister company,” The Mulch Connection, sells and delivers mulch, stone, topsoil and firewood to residential homeowners and area landscape companies.
Since 2009, TJ’s hard work, dedication and the expertise of the team he has assembled have made JHL Landscaping one of today’s premier full-service Landscape/Hardscape Design, Construction, Masonry and Management companies in the Philadelphia area. In addition to President TJ Warner and Office Manager Sam Warner, JHL’s Management Team includes General Manager Drew Reish, Landscape Designer Rob Bergen, Landscape Architect Andy Bianco, Field Supervisor Seth Delp, Job Coordination/Shop Manager Nick Custer, Secretary Randi McCormick and Office Assistant Marianne Bianco. Collectively, this team has over 100 years of industry expertise! JHL graciously offers free consultations and estimates, to help bring into focus your vision for your outdoor space.
Every JHL Landscaping customer sees and feels the stunning results, which are due to consistently high quality of workmanship from start to finish. TJ and his team have a level of professionalism and integrity that sets them apart from their competition. Whether you’re considering adding or simply maintaining your landscaping or hardscaping, put yourself in very good hands by taking advantage of TJ Warner’s love for and expertise in beautifying your outdoor spaces. The Richards Family: Love, Laughter and Little Ones
Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors is proud to introduce you to our inaugural featured family: The Richards. Ryan, Alyssa and their four children call Edgmont home in a neigh borhood that stands the test of time, not just in years, but for multiple generations of families.
Ryan grew up in Edgmont Township with his parents and two younger sisters. When Ryan was five years old, his parents moved from Drexel Hill to the Castle Rock section of Newtown Square, located in Edgmont Township. He attended Rose Tree Elementary, Springton Lake Middle School and graduated from Penncrest High School, where he played football and lacrosse.
After high school, Ryan studied construction management technology at Delaware County Community College. Today Ryan works for the Delaware County Water Quality Control Authority (DELCORA) in their maintenance department. DELCORA is a municipal authority in wastewater facilities' construction, operation and management. “I like that my job allows me to solve problems and be part of the solution,” he said. “I also enjoy traveling around the county and interacting with engineers, technicians and customers.”
Ryan is also the elected Auditor for Edgmont Township. “My mom served as the township’s auditor for many years,” he explained. “She moved out of Edgmont in 2016 and I was asked to take the position.” Ryan agreed to serve a term and was recently re-elected to continue his role.
Alyssa spent her childhood in Glen Mills with her parents and two sisters. She went to Boothwyn Elementary, Charles F. Patton Middle School and graduated from Unionville High School. Her education continued after graduation at Empire Beauty School for Cosmetology.
“I knew from an early age that I wanted a career in Cosmetology,” Alyssa said. “I grew up watching my aunt work in the field, and I knew that’s what I wanted to pursue.” Alyssa said that while in high school, she would do all her friends’ hair, either just for fun or for proms and special events. Alyssa has been in the industry for 16 years now and is still just as passionate about helping people feel good about themselves as she

was when she started. “I especially love working with brides and wedding parties,” Alyssa said. “It means a lot to me to be a part of their special day.”
Ryan and Alyssa met in West Chester in 2011 through mutual friends. Alyssa said that a few of her friends kept trying to set her up with this really great guy, but she wanted nothing to do with going on a blind date. “So, my friends asked if they could

invite Ryan to the New Year’s Eve party that I was hosting,” she said. “Looks like our friends knew us very well because we immediately hit it off and started dating.”
Ryan explained that he and Alyssa just clicked. “We shared so many of the same interests,” he said. “We dated for three years, then got engaged.” The couple tied the knot in 2016 at St. Mary Magdalen Church and celebrated with family and friends at The Desmond in Malvern. One of Ryan and Alyssa’s common interests is traveling, so they booked a honeymoon on St. Martin and enjoyed riding horses on the beach, boating, snorkeling and soaking in the stunning sunsets.
After the honeymoon, the newlyweds returned to life in West Chester and began the search for their forever home. Both Ryan and Alyssa knew they wanted to stay in the area because their families were nearby, but finding the right home wasn’t an easy task. “We wanted to live in a great neighborhood, with great neighbors, great schools and lots of kids,” Ryan said. “You know, just like the kind of neighborhood that I grew up in.”
They say that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, it’s green where you water it and for Ryan and Alyssa, that meant settling down in Ryan’s childhood home. “The timing was perfect,” Ryan explained. “Just as my mom was looking to downsize, we were starting our family, so we purchased the home from her in 2017.”

Alyssa said they absolutely love the Castle Rock community. “It’s such a great neighborhood to live in and raise a family,” she said. “It’s quiet and secluded, yet just steps from shops, restaurants and the movie theater.” Ryan said that he loves that there are 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generations of families in Castle Rock. There are many kids running around, a park at the bottom of the street, and caring neighbors looking out for each other. They feel right at home.
Today, their home is filled with lots of love, laughter and little ones! Ryan and Alyssa have four active children who love to play and explore. Family time is very important to them, so when they’re not at work or in school, you’ll find them playing sports, fishing in Crum Creek, playing outside and decorating their front lawn for their favorite holiday – Halloween! Ryan and Alyssa are also gearing up for a home renovation that will give them the space they need in the neighborhood they love.
Ella is Alyssa and Ryan’s oldest. She is an outgoing seven-yearold who just started second grade at Rose Tree Elementary. Ella loves playing soccer and softball and recently expressed interest in playing lacrosse. Alyssa said that Ella is an awesome big sister and loves spending time with her younger siblings.
Next in line is five-year-old Tristan, who just joined Ella at Rose Tree Elementary for Kindergarten. Ryan described Tristan as quiet and shy but loves to play and has such a big heart. Tristan enjoys playing sports like baseball, football, soccer and lacrosse.
Three-year-old Declan is the family’s life of the party! He is Mr. Personality who loves to make everyone laugh. Like his big brother, Declan also loves to play sports. Alyssa said that everyone knows when Declan has entered the room.
Rounding out the bunch is one-year-old Eva. She may be the baby of the family, but Eva is quickly learning how to keep up with her sister and brothers. Ryan and Alyssa said that Eva loves to be outside and doesn’t want to miss out on what her older siblings are doing. Alyssa said that Eva does have a sweet, shy side, too and loves playing with her baby dolls.
Ryan and Alyssa certainly have their hands full with work, school, sports and community activities, but they always find time for family fun both at home and on the road. Every summer, they vacation with extended family in Ocean City, NJ and have hit the road to spend time in the Poconos, Myrtle Beach, Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Last fall Ryan and Alyssa had the opportunity to take a little trip to Boston and Salem, MA, without the kids. “We took a long weekend and experienced all the Halloween, fall activities and rich history of the area, which was so much fun!” Alyssa said.
On behalf of your Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, we would like to thank Ryan and Alyssa for sharing your family’s story in our very first issue. We enjoyed getting to know you and look forward to watching your beautiful family grow. Do you know a Newtown Edgmont family, individual or nonprofit group who should become known by our community? The History of Castle Rock
by Doug Humes
Where do you begin to tell the history of Castle Rock, once one of the most prominent places in Edgmont Township? Millions of years ago when the rock formation thrust above the surface? 12,000 years ago, when the first Native Americans set eyes on the formation jutting out of the earth perhaps 400 feet? Do we start with the early settlers of Edgmont who christened it with the name “Castle Rock” because it reminded them of English castles? Perhaps the tale of Sandy Flash, the Highwayman of Castle Rock? Though Sandy Flash is fictitious, his story is based upon an actual bandit, James Fitzpatrick, who terrorized the community during the American Revolution, and was ultimately captured at a farmhouse nearby.

to view it from Castle Rock Road. There are many chapters to its history – and in future issues we will be exploring Castle Rock and the other stories connected with the 300+ years of history of Edgmont Township.

The rock formation was an early tourist destination, so much so that the Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company built a trolley line from 63rd Street out to an amusement park that they created at Castle Rock. A 1902 news article described what was there: “The cave and the rocks which were the hiding places and fortifications of Fitzpatrick during the long period of his depredations in the Revolutionary War have been made easy of access by shaded walks and are visited by thousands of curious persons. Fishing, dancing, merry go-rounds, shuffle boards and other games are delighting visitors. The Park has a fine restaurant. It is an enjoyable ride on the Philadelphia and West Chester trolley line to Castle Rock.”
The outcropping, now about 325 feet in elevation, was taller in the past. The trolley company blasted the top of the formation for ballast to use in extending the line to West Chester. When the amusement park closed, a church group continued to hold picnics and religious services at the Rock. WWI veterans began camping there to escape from the city, and erected small camp buildings. A developer bought the land in the 1920s and began building a model community, by fits and starts as the country entered the Great Depression.
The tight-knit community of Castle Rock continues today. The actual rock formation exists but no longer dominates the landscape. It is on private property and so not accessible other than

Bringing People Together
by Bob Blaisse, Publisher Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors
Bringing People Together Is Now A Bigger Party!
Idid not think of it. I wish I had. It was an advertising Sponsor of our two neighboring publications, Marple Friends & Neighbors and Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, who first said it when I asked why he also wanted to become a Sponsor of this new hometown magazine, Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors. Candidly he replied: “Bob, we know everyone reads your magazine. We even read every new issue cover to cover, on the day it arrives in the mail. We just want to always be seen at the party.”
Insightful! I suppose our magazine is like a party going on. After all, the mission and motto of our publications is: “Bringing People Together.” We do that through our own unique brand of social-media-in-print which creates a sense of belonging to a community, by one or two degrees of separation most readers find with every feature article. That feels good, like being “at a party.” And readers often tell me that feeling often starts at the moment they notice the latest issue of their hometown magazine has just arrived in the mail.
For you newer residents of Newtown Township, for all you homeowners in Edgmont Township, and our friends & neighbors in Willistown Township, this social-media-in-print hometown magazine is the party, and it’s just starting up for you with this inaugural issue of Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors. Welcome to The Party!
The success of our local Friends & Neighbors magazines as social-media-in-print for more than four years in Marple and Newtown Square, is what inspired our staff and our advertising Sponsors to expand the party’s guest list. Because a good party is always a better party, when it's a bigger party, this new magazine is now mailed to all Edgmont Township homes, the newer homes in Newtown Township, and many of our friends and neighbors living in Willistown Township.
Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, as a new, free monthly magazine that will continue to arrive in the mail each month, and has been made possible by financial commitments made by the businesses you see advertising on these pages. The owners of those businesses are the Sponsors of the party. We owe them our thanks. But for this party to get louder, I need the help of readers who I like to call our “Reader Leaders.”
If you enjoy reading this first issue of Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, let us know. We need your feedback.
We also need your suggestions for future articles. Nominate a friend or neighbor for our cover story. Suggest an organization or place in your community for a feature article. Let’s grow our page count for local features in each new issue. But to do that, we’ll need to add more local businesses who want to be seen every month and be known as our community Sponsors.
Which local businesses should we also invite to the party? Who are the local Experts you trust? Who is missing from this social-media-in-print party which will now be Bringing People Together across Newtown Edgmont every month through this magazine? We expect, just as our other local magazines, it will remain in homes all month long until the next issue arrives in the mail with a new local family on the cover and more interesting local feature articles to read.
The simplest way to be a Reader Leader, and join our Bringing People Together mission, is to kindly let our advertising Sponsors know you have seen them on the pages of this magazine, while thanking them for investing in your community as a Sponsor. Pick a few Sponsors. Call or stop in to thank them for demonstrating how important Newtown Edgmont is to the success of their business by their choosing to use a portion of their limited marketing budget to be seen by you in your hometown magazine. Consider rewarding that investment which is now Bringing People Together across Newtown Edgmont, through Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors magazine, by choosing to do business with our Sponsors first whenever possible.
Help grow our magazine page count so we can publish more local features every month. Here’s how: think of businesses you trust. Recommend they should be seen on these pages and at the party that is Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors.
If your Reader Leadership results in our hometown magazine gaining a new advertising Sponsor, I’ll be asking if we can share your name with readers and I’ll ask you to nominate a local resident family to be featured on the cover of an upcoming issue. Just follow the steps on page 13 to see how easy it is to be a Reader Leader. E

Are you in the market for a quality yet inexpensive used vehicle? Maybe you’re looking for a second car or need a vehicle for a new driver in the family? With so many choices out there, how can you be sure you’ll buy something reliable and safe? How can you avoid buying a known “lemon” or paying too much? Here are some tips to help you make a well-informed buying decision.
Have a Specific Budget in Mind
Cost is usually the #1 variable for most people when choosing the right vehicle, used or new. There are good cars out there for every budget. Pick out a few vehicles you like that are within your budget, then talk to a trusted automotive professional, who should gladly review your list and weed out the vehicles that are too expensive to maintain or just plain problematic.
Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection
Whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private party, any vehicle you want to buy should pass a pre-purchase inspection. If a seller refuses to let you take the vehicle to your auto technician, then cross that one off your list. Set an appointment with your auto repair facility, to have them check out your short list. The information you receive about the vehicle(s) could be priceless. A reasonable inspection for leaks, loose or worn components and rust can help you avoid immediate repair costs. Have your auto technician perform a computer
scan for trouble codes, which could save you hundreds or even thousands in repairs on high-tech features and accessories.
Use a Trusted Auto Technician
If the shop is in Pennsylvania, have an ASE-certified repair shop perform an official inspection. Relying on such professional expertise can steer you away from auto headaches and toward a reliable vehicle.
Expensive Vehicles Aren’t Always the Best Choice
Do some online research about the vehicle(s) you’re interested in looking at. Review the safety features, accessories and reliability of each potential used vehicle you’re considering. Get a report for each vehicle’s accident damage and maintenance history. If the previous owner cared enough to maintain the vehicle to protect their investment, chances are it’s a good investment for you.
Bottom line
Spending some time and even a little money to find a safe, quality used vehicle will give you some priceless peace of mind.
Publishers Note: I may have inspired Lou Matteo to write his feature this month after he inspected my son’s old car in August and suggested it was time to let it go. And then looking over the used pickup truck my son was thinking of buying if Lou approved. Two great recommendations by one great auto mechanic that so many of us have come to trust. Thank you Lou. E

There are moments in life when we are expected to step outside of our comfort zone and rise to the challenge. Imagine that you applied for your dream job and were asked to come in for an interview, or you received a callback after auditioning for a role in a musical. An important life skill for moments like these is confidence.
Confidence can be defined as a feeling of self-assurance that occurs from the appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities. Each one of us deserves to move through life with conviction in what we are truly capable of. While putting ourselves out there isn’t supposed to be easy or comfortable, doing things that sometimes scare us is key to achieving personal growth. Picture the things you can achieve if you just take the leap! Confidence impacts our happiness, success and well-being, and helps shape the way we carry ourselves. The activities we engage in, as well as the relationships we foster with ourselves and others, play a large role in building our confidence.
Dance is a prime example of a confidence-boosting activity – it takes guts to dance in front of others! Whether you’re dancing in the presence of a dance teacher, other students or you’re performing in front of an audience, the more your dancing skills grow, your self-confidence will follow. Because dance provides a space where we are encouraged to believe in ourselves, try our best, and set goals and accomplish them, we learn about the importance of persevering through challenges.
Dance teaches us that growth isn’t always linear: progress is a PROCESS. We can’t always expect things to come to us naturally. When attempting a pirouette turn for the first time, it’s likely going to be challenging. Instead of feeling discouraged when first starting out, be kind to yourself and remember that good things come with time, practice and patience. The same lesson applies to anything new you take on in life.
Immersing yourself in a group who supports one another is key to building self-confidence, and will in-turn change your inner-monologue. A true friend is someone who cheers you on in your mission to conquer your own goals, and who makes it
easy to be there for them when they need a pep talk. Not only are our relationships with others integral in shaping our confidence, positive self-talk can go a long way. If your friend nails their pirouette, cheer them on and remember your time to shine will come. In the words of ice hockey Hall of Famer, Wayne Gretsky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Don’t be afraid to fall… take the leap. E

Community Day Edgmont
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Edgmont Township
Afun day was had by all at the first annual Edgmont Community Day that was held on Saturday, September 10th. Visitors to Arasapha Farm enjoyed music, games, visiting the animals at the petting zoo, face painting, axe throwing and pony rides.
The Edgmont Township Board of Supervisors worked with community members, local business owners and government officials to bring this event to life. Neil Vaughn is Edgmont’s Township Manager and Zoning Officer. “Our goal is to enhance the sense of community within Edgmont Township and this includes community events,” said Neil. “Our first event was an Easter Egg Hunt in the spring and the feedback was amazing. We continued the momentum with this community day and look forward to it becoming an annual event.”
There was something for everyone on the 80-acre farm located on Middletown Rd in Glen Mills. Local craft vendors sold their handmade jewelry, bags, seasonal decorations and candles. Sweet treats and good eats were provided by the area’s top food trucks and restaurants, and DJ Corey Curtin kept the mood fun and festive with some great music.
Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors magazine’s mission is Bringing People Together, and highlighting this event is the perfect way to kick off our inaugural issue! E

Everyone these days seems to have a phone full of photos and videos. Many people also enjoy the ease of having a virtual notebook on their phone, for when they need to jot down something that they’ve seen or heard. But have you ever thought about how helpful having this ‘virtual history’ could be when you have a legal issue or need to prove something in court?
It’s very important to remember to take photos, videos and notes while things are happening in our lives, both good and maybe not so good. Just like keeping a journal or diary, evidence recorded as things are happening can be some of the strongest evidence in court.
The fact is that by the time something turns into a legal issue, it is usually already in the works long before we consult with an attorney and take legal action. Attorneys truly appreciate it when a client pulls out a pic, video or other unambiguous proof taken at the time in question.
Social media is definitely a double-edged sword in countless ways. It can be used against you or it can help you with an issue that you’re looking into. It can be used as evidence both for you or for the other side, so be extremely careful when posting to social media.
If you come across something pertinent to a case that you’re involved in online or on social media, take a screenshot of it and text or email it to your attorney. It absolutely can be used in court and can often be some of the most impactful evidence. Attorneys have been quite successful in court for their clients with the use of social media screenshots, as well as printouts of text messages. Our phones and computers have the ability to memorialize something, as it happens, and timestamp it, including a person's statements and activity. When in doubt, take the photo, screenshot, video or notes to be on the safe side. You absolutely miss out on the benefit of any evidence you don’t record and keep, just in case. E

To “E” or Not to “E”: That is the Question
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard
Have you ever wondered why, as you drive around town, you see two different spellings for Edgmont? Humor us as we take a look at the debate and the history surrounding the extra “e” in Edgemont – Or is it Edgmont?
First, we must take a look at when the township was incorporated. The area was first settled in 1686 by the Baker family and named for the Royal Manor of Edgmond in Shropshire, England. Early history documents reference the site a few different ways: Edgemond, Edgmond, Edgemont and Edgmont. Then in the nineteenth century, the township officially settled on Edgmont. Okay, so how do you explain the Edgemont Post Office? Good question. It turns out that The United States Postal Service established a post office in the township in 1823, but the U.S. Geological Survey declared in 1891 that the federal government would spell it “Edgemont” with the middle “e” even though the township spelled it without.
Adding to the debate is whether township residents use the official Edgemont Post office zip code of 19028 or Newtown Square’s zip code of 19073. It seems either is acceptable, though most residents we talked to use 19073 – unless you’re ordering pizza delivery and live on one of the many streets that exist in both Newtown Township and Edgmont Township. But let’s save that discussion for a future issue!
So, how did we arrive at naming our magazine Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors? For starters, there are already 15 other towns in the U.S. named Edgemont, and that’s confusing enough. But it’s also like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. In this case, we know the Township Charter declaring Edgmont as the proper spelling came first, and so we have decided not to “E”.
So, whether you choose to “E” or not to “E”, we can all agree on the answer to the question: It’s a great place to call home. E

Vent-Free Gas Fireplace Facts
Vent-free appliances are similar to other space-heating and hearth products, with one exception – they don’t have a vent. There is a large misconception when it comes to vent-free gas, but the truth is there are many valuable benefits to this type of heating.
Today, vent-free gas appliances include heaters, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, stoves and log sets, and every year manufacturers introduce new designs and styles of vent-free products. Converting your wood-burning fireplace to a vent-free gas log set eliminates the hassle and mess of hauling in wood, disposing of ashes, lighting uncooperative kindling, tending the fire and guarding against stray embers.
Additionally, installation costs of vent-free products are up to 60 percent less than the cost of installing vented heating appliances, as there is no need to cut through exterior walls or to create an expensive chimney or vent system. Any of the 62 million homes that are supplied with natural or propane gas can inexpensively have a professional install a vent-free heater, fireplace, stove or log set. A certified installer familiar with vent-free products and local building codes can help you choose the right-sized product for your home and install it properly within an hour.
The most common myth about vent-free gas heat is that they are unsafe. First, vent-free appliances feature an automatic safety shut-off device (Oxygen Detection System or ODS).
The ODS turns off the gas in case of a malfunction. Second, with 17 million units installed in the U.S. alone since 1980, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that it is not aware of any documented incident in the CPSC In-Depth Investigation (IDI) database of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning associated with an ODS-equipped vent-free gas heating product. Vent-free gas heaters, fireplaces, stoves and log sets meet all of the most relevant indoor air quality standards and guidelines and have an outstanding safety record.
In addition, in 1996 the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, members of GAMA, an Association of Appliance and Equipment Manufacturers, commissioned an independent research project to be conducted by the American Gas Association Research Division (AGAR). The researchers concluded that “vent-free gas heating products performed well within nationally recognized guidelines for indoor air quality. This research proves that vent-free gas heating products meet applicable emissions requirements even when used over extended time periods, among sensitive populations, and with units whose maximum heat output exceeds the requirements of the space.” This landmark research has been extensively peer-reviewed and has served as the basis for acceptance of vent-free gas products by national code groups and state regulatory agencies.
Vent-free gas heating has been proven time and again as a safe option, and for many people it is a cost-efficient and hassle-free alternative to other heating options. E

His story will inspire you to rethink what you think is impossible. Nick moved to Newtown Square with his parents and younger sister when he was years old. He went to Culbertson Elementary and Paxon Hollow Middle School. Nick graduated from Marple Newtown High School where he played football and lacrosse and worked part-time for his father’s residential masonry company. “I learned lot about discipline and hard work while playing sports,” Nick said. “Coaches Davey Jones and Kevin Merchant really made an impact on me and Coach D’Alonzo taught to have confidence on the After high school, Nick was accepted to Temple University, where he studied Engineering with focus on Construction Management. Temple also where Nick met his fiancée, Amanda. Amanda grew up in Lansdowne and studied at Temple’s Tyler School of Art, earning her degree in Visual Studies and Art Education. She is an art teacher at St. Eugene School in Primos and Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) school in Darby. She, Nick and their 18-month-old son, Domenic, currently live in Drexel Hill but hope to buy home of their own in Newtown Square in the near future. Today, Nick works as Project Engineer for Warfel Construction and based out of their Paoli office. “Right now, we’re working on a major renovation at Dunwoody Village,” Nick said. “I am really enjoying managing project in my own hometown.” It was during Nick’s college years that he began practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This martial art uses the principles of leverage, angles, pres- sure and timing, as well as knowledge of the human anatomy. The goal is to achieve non-violent submission of one’s opponent. It’s sport that requires equal parts physical and mental toughness. As time went on, Nick continued to practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at local gym. That was until Covid hit, and his gym had to shut down. “I needed to stay active, so began running every day,” Nick said. “I set goals for myself to stay motivated by adding one mile and one more day each week.” He started running three miles three days week, then four miles four days a week until he was running every day. Nick said he has always been physically active but admitted that running wasn’t an activity he particularly enjoyed. “Back in college, few of my friends encouraged me to do the Broad Street Run,” he said. “At the time, thought running 10 miles was by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Resident Feature Nick Ciarrochi: Taking Simple Steps to Achieve Big Success Nick and his Eric at an aid during the Eastern States 100 courtesy of Nick Ciarrocchi Continued page 8 Ciarrocchi after Ridley Creek Park Photo by Crissy Photography www.CrissyEverhart.com Hurricane Season Brings Expensive Surprises!
