Forward Thinking: Local Vision for 2021 by Holly Stupak

ach new year brings hopes and visions for the future. And as our clocks ticked down to that final second in 2020, we all surely raised a glass to wish it a swift goodbye, welcoming 2021 with open arms. What are your goals and dreams for this new year? We set out to ask a few local residents and business owners about their vision for 2021.

The Barry-Cottone Family Broomall residents Brigit Barry and Michael Cottone and their sons Vin (5) and Cormac (1½) said the time at home this year really gave them time to reflect on who they are as a family. “What I think we are most appreciative for is health, family, and employment. We’ve also learned to be flexible and adaptable,” said Brigit. “We are also really grateful to our employers who have allowed us to manage both our family and jobs at the same time.” In 2021, they will continue the mindset of one day at a time. And while they don’t typically make New Year’s resolutions, both Michael and Brigit said they like to set goals for themselves. They also created a unique way to help themselves stay positive. “We created a spreadsheet that we can share on our iPhones. Each day, we enter three things we’re grateful for and one positive experience, and then we share this with each other,” explained Brigit. The Barry-Cottones said that this process helps them keep each other accountable for remembering to be thankful for what they have. “Each day, I’m on a journey to be a better husband and father,” said Michael. Diane Caporella Art in Motion Dance Studio Last Spring, Art in Motion made many adjustments to accommodate their dancers and allow them to keep dancing during the pandemic, including virtual classes and video showcase performances. “The dancers work so hard to prepare for every performance. I can’t wait to see them perform live again!” Diane said. She also plans on spending more time with family and friends and to not take that time for granted. She is also looking forward to seeing Broadway shows and enjoying the arts in person again.

Melissa Anderson (“Miss Mel”) Children’s Dept. Assistant Marple Public Library When the Marple Public Library had to close in the spring, Miss Mel got creative so she could still connect with her young readers, offering lots of engaging online content. “2020 brought a considerable amount of change and pushed me into the virtual world. My family and friends have supported and encouraged me and I have so appreciated that spirit of generosity, kindness and love!” she said. “When I know my kids and families are watching and sending me their love, it gives me the boost I need to give 110% every day. They are my inspiration!” In 2021, Mel said she wants to build her resilience and discover new and creative ways to reach out to patrons and families. “Every year, I set the same resolution for myself: Be the change you want to see in the world.”
