Forward Thinking: Local Vision for 2021
Our Community article by Holly Stupak
Each new year brings hopes and visions for the future. And as our clocks ticked down to that final second in 2020, we all surely raised a glass to wish it a swift goodbye, welcoming 2021 with open arms.
What are your goals and dreams for this new year? We set out to ask a few local residents and business owners about their vision for 2021.

Broomall residents Brigit Barry and Michael Cottone and their sons Vin (5) and Cormac (1½) said the time at home this year really gave them time to reflect on who they are as a family. “What I think we are most appreciative for is health, family, and employment. We’ve also learned to be flexible and adaptable,” said Brigit. “We are also really grateful to our employers who have allowed us to manage both our family and jobs at the same time.”
In 2021, they will continue the mindset of one day at a time. And while they don’t typically make New Year’s resolutions, both Michael and Brigit said they like to set goals for themselves. They also created a unique way to help themselves stay positive. “We created a spreadsheet that we can share on our iPhones. Each day, we enter three things we’re grateful for and one positive experience, and then we share this with each other,” explained Brigit. They said this process helps them keep each other accountable for remembering to be thankful for what they have. “Each day, I’m on a journey to be a better husband and father,” said Michael.

Last spring, Art in Motion Dance Studio made many adjustments to accommodate their dancers and allow them to keep dancing during the pandemic, including virtual classes and video showcase performances. “The dancers work so hard to prepare for every performance," said Diane. "I can’t wait to see them perform live again!”
She also plans on spending more time with family and friends and to not take that time for granted. She is also looking forward to seeing Broadway shows and enjoying the arts in person again.

When the Marple Public Library had to close in the spring, Miss Mel got creative so she could still connect with her young readers, to offer lots of engaging online content. “2020 brought a considerable amount of change and pushed me into the virtual world. My family and friends have supported and encouraged me and I have so appreciated that spirit of generosity, kindness and love!” she said. “When I know my kids and families are watching and sending me their love, it gives me the boost I need to give 110% every day. They are my inspiration!”
In 2021, Mel said she wants to build her resilience and discover new and creative ways to reach out to patrons and families.

More people staying home this winter means that business is brisk over at Scott’s Fireplace Products. While Ray Magness and his dad, Scott Magness, are very grateful to be busy, Ray is really looking forward to spending time with family at the shore this summer. “We didn’t get to go last year, and that was really disappointing.”
When asked what he will appreciate most in 2021, the one word that comes to mind is FREEDOM. Ray doesn’t make resolutions but he does set goals, and a big one for the coming year is to purchase a new home.

“I hope our country can prosper in the New Year and that all businesses can get back to some kind of normalcy,” said Danielle Camacho, Owner of the Mad Hatter Broomall boutique. In 2021, she will focus on ensuring a safe shopping environment for her customers. Danielle says that her amazing and loyal customers in the Marple community got her through 2020 by consistently returning to and promoting The Mad Hatter Broomall in any way they could.
As a small business owner, Danielle's goal is to continue to create a fun and inclusive shopping experience in-store and online. In 2020, she learned to think outside the box, so her New Year’s Resolution for 2021 is to expand in many ways, including creating lots more fun!
Thank you to our Friends & Neighbors for sharing your hopes for this new year.
Whatever YOUR dream is for 2021, here’s to hoping it happens — and in a big way!
