Perhaps you don’t know the Cunninghams personally but you remember them through Kelly’s late husband, Clinton. A decorated officer with the Newtown Township Police Department, Clint passed away unexpectedly a little over three years ago, while working out at the gym. He was a loving, devoted father, husband, brother and friend, and is described by his peers as being a great police officer but an even better person.

The Cunninghams’ story is one of love, laughter, faith, family and community. Like a beautiful love song that stands the test of time, looking back to where it all began helps us to appreciate and understand how their story continues to carry on.

Kelly grew up in Springfield, with her parents and three siblings. She graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High school where she played basketball, lacrosse and ran cross country. Kelly’s love for basketball continued as point guard for the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins. After Kelly earned her degree in Elementary Education with a focus in Special Education, she began her career teaching kindergarten at Manoa Elementary School in Havertown. These days, you’ll find Kelly combining her love for sports, fitness and education at Ellis Athletic Center.

She’s a Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor and Nutritionist, and is currently launching her own program to help women develop healthy habits.

Clint Cunningham grew up in southwest Philly, attended St. Clement’s Grade School, and graduated from West Catholic 6

High School. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Clint entered the police academy. He began his career with the Philadelphia police force, assigned to the First District in south Philadelphia. After serving nine years there, Clint was hired by the Newtown Township Police Department, where he excelled, and in 2018, was named the recipient of the Walt Wolff Award for Officer of the Year, just one week before he passed away. He had also earned a promotion to Sergeant along with a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Joseph’s University, both of which were awarded posthumously.

When asked to tell the story about how Kelly and Clint met, Kelly’s eyes light up. “We had a mutual friend, Brian,” Kelly explained. “Brian and I both went to Gwynedd Mercy, and Brian and Clint had grown up together.” Although Kelly and Brian were close friends in college, she and Clint didn’t finally connect until after graduation. “I’m not sure how our paths didn’t cross sooner!” she said. “Clint had been up to visit Brian at school a bunch of times, but somehow we never met.”

Kelly laughs when telling how their love story actually came to be. Brian, on a match-making mission, was out with Clint one night and mentioned Kelly’s name, yet again. Brian then excused himself, leaving his phone on the table. Kelly says she doesn’t know what came over Clint, but he grabbed Brian’s phone and called Kelly, to introduce himself. Thinking it was

Brian calling, she was shocked to hear Clint’s voice on the other end. It was a short conversation, but enough to convince Kelly to meet Clint, Brian and some friends for a casual night out at Barnaby’s. “I went to Barnaby’s in Havertown, looked around but couldn’t find them. Turns out they were at Barnaby’s in Ridley!” she said laughing. “Once we figured that out, I jumped back in my car and headed down the Blue Route.”

It took only a few minutes for the pair to hit it off. “I could tell immediately that Clint was a gentleman,” Kelly said. “He was funny, too. He had this dry sense of humor and a way of quietly cracking jokes so only his closest friends would hear.” As the night went on, the connections deepened. They both loved sports and fitness. She and Clint also discovered that they each came from close-knit families and were raised by devoutly Catholic parents. Family and faith were at the top of their lists, so it was no surprise when they became engaged within one year of dating and married six months after.

The couple spent their early married life living in Philadelphia, for Clint’s job. But when the police department lifted their residency restrictions, they made the move to Newtown Square.

Clint told Kelly that he always wanted to live in Newtown Square because to him, it felt like the country and a healthy escape from living and working in the city. As a child, Clint would often spend weekends with his cousins at his Uncle George and Aunt Janet’s house in Newtown Square. A lot of that time was spent watching his cousin Chris play ball at the Newtown Edgmont Little League fields, and Clint just knew it would be an amazing

place to raise children. For Kelly, Newtown Square felt right because it kept her close to her family. They were excited about their move soon after Clint joined the Newtown Township Police Department in 2013.

With a new home and a growing family at the forefront, Kelly and Clint decided that Kelly would leave her teaching position, to homeschool their children. “Clint’s schedule as an office Continued on page 8

Resident Feature included shift work, so homeschooling gave us the flexibility to spend a lot of quality time together as a family,” Kelly explained.

“Although it was challenging, looking back now, it was an absolute blessing.” That flexibility allowed Kelly, Clint and the kids to go hiking, play basketball, walk the neighborhood, travel together and have more dance parties than they could count because as much as Clint loved basketball and sports, he loved music even more. He was always in charge of the playlist, and his kids loved every minute of it.

After Clint passed away, Kelly enrolled the kids at St. Anastasia’s.

Oftentimes when Clint was on duty, he would stop into our area school buildings, just to check in. He enjoyed getting to know the faculty, staff and kids. Kelly considers it another blessing that shortly before Clint passed, he told Kelly how much he loved St. Anastasia School. That made her decision a bit easier and the kids adapted well.

Next is Devon. She’s in 6th grade and aspires to be a doctor someday. Like her big sister, Devon plays basketball, lacrosse and field hockey, and runs track and cross country. “Devon is a sweetheart,” said Kelly. “She’s kind, mature and has lots of friends.” Devon loved to snuggle with her dad, and she holds tightly to those special memories.

When asked how she manages life without her partner, Kelly was quick to respond. “I will tell you it’s hard sometimes. Clint and I were a great team, we had a strong, loving marriage and I miss him terribly,” she said. “But my family, Clint’s family and this amazing community is what carries us through.” Kelly feels blessed knowing that someone is always there to help.

Kelly’s parents and her sister, Natalie, are just minutes away, and Clint’s parents recently moved to Newtown Square so they could help with the kids. Both families, whether near or far, have given Kelly and the kids their unwavering support as has their Police family, their Ellis Athletic Center family, their St. Anastasia family and the entire Newtown Square Community.

The Cunninghams are well loved.

CJ is Kelly and Clint’s oldest son, named after his father, Clinton Joseph. CJ is an active 11-year-old 4th-grader. Kelly described him as a kind and awesome big brother. “He’s a hard worker, but he’s also chill, like his dad.” Clint loved to watch CJ play baseball at NELL, and spent much of his time off playing basketball with him in the driveway.

Clint, Kelly and their kids packed a lot of memories into the time they had together. And Clint’s legacy will continue to live on through the wonderful gifts he gave his family: His unconditional love, undivided attention and unwavering faith that surround Kelly and the kids every single day. He gave them life’s perfect playlist. Turn it up and dance!

Rounding out the bunch is Sean, who is a spitting image of his dad. At just 5 years old and in Pre-K, he has managed to wrap them all around his cute little finger. “Sean is a character,” chuckled Kelly. “He’s funny, outgoing and loves starring in his sisters’ TikTok videos.” Following in his big brother’s footsteps, Sean is playing Tee Ball at NELL this spring.

Kerrilyn is the oldest of Clint and Kelly’s children. She is a 7th-grader who loves basketball, track, cross country and field hockey. Kelly says she is absolutely just like her dad. “Kerrilyn is a born leader. She’s confident, smart and incredibly funny.”

A Student Council member for four years, Gabrielle (“Gab”) currently serves as Senior Vice President on the Student Council's Executive Board. As a four-year member of For the Kids (FTK), she has helped raise money to find a cure for childhood cancer. And since her sophomore year, Gab has given back to the local community as a member of her school's Feeding Fellow Americans Club, which prepares food packages for distribution by Philabundance, the area's largest hunger relief organization.

Gab also serves as a member on several sports teams. Since age 5, she has played softball, first in the Newtown Square Petticoat League (NSPL), and all four years at MNHS. Since freshman year, she has also been on the Indoor Track and Tennis teams. Gab’s tennis skill and team leadership earned her the role of Tennis team Captain in her junior and senior years.

Gabrielle also excels academically, and is a member of the National Honor Society, the English Honor Society and the Social Studies Honor Society. And as a member of the World Language Honor Society, she enjoys studying the culture of Spanish- and French-speaking countries and participating in charity drives to benefit needy people in those countries.

Gab’s college major may be Environmental Studies because she’s “super-passionate about preserving the environment and renewable energy sources.” She’s also considering studying Business Marketing, to prepare for a career in sports marketing or management.

Properly waterproofing the walls requires more than simply sealing wall cracks and painting the walls with a waterproof paint. Basement windows may need to be repaired, replaced or installed, to provide adequate ventilation so humid air can escape and fresh air can come in. And your home must be properly weatherproofed: Gutters, downspouts and landscaping around your home must make rain and melted snow and ice drain away from your home’s foundation so that moisture can’t leak back in through the basement walls.

If your basement floor floods after it rains, or you don’t want to risk flooding if your washing machine or water heater malfunctions, a french drain and a sump pump will effectively keep water off the floor and also pump the water outside.

PHASE 2: Clean and Seal the Floor After the floor and walls have been properly waterproofed and the french drain has fully cured, the basement’s concrete floor must be thoroughly cleaned, using basic soap and water. (No harsh chemicals are needed. “Green” solutions work.) Remove all the dirt and residue by hosing down the floor with the spray nozzle at full volume. The slop will flow into the french drain, and the sump pump will push it outside.

100 Years and Four Generations of Entrepreneurial Spirit

Nearing the 100th anniversary of the company, O’Donnell Roofing has experienced a long history of change, growth and adaptation. Current Owner Kevin O’Donnell is proud to be part of the history of O’Donnell Roofing, which spans four generations of his family.

In the first generation, a roof could cost $28 and a repair could cost $.60. For a time, the company signs read ‘C.A. O’Donnell II’ with no mention of roofing. C.A. was Kevin’s great-grandfather, Clement Aloysius O’Donnell. Clement started the company in West Philadelphia in 1924, and provided a number of services to the community. Instead of focusing only on roofing, C.A. O’Donnell II serviced coal burners in the winter when the demand for roofing quieted down. He owned a sheet metal shop where they would fabricate roofing and heating materials. There were no big box-stores down the street to buy materials for putting a roof and gutters on a house. Everything was custom.

Since the 1920s, the roofing industry has changed drastically, and so has the company’s service line, but the O’Donnell name

still stands strong. The family business has combined innovation with adaptation, to remain relevant and hold on to the traditional local charm that started almost 100 years ago.

Kevin O’Donnell has managed the company since 2012, when his father, Laurence, stepped away from his executive management role. Laurence had started with the company at age 19, and by 29, he took over the head role from his father (Kevin’s grandfather) Clement Jr. Under Laurence’s influence, the company expanded and changed quite a bit, by moving into different roofing product lines and customer types. Laurence started doing roof restorations and custom roofs including slate, cedar and copper. His work became the premier standard for custom metal and restoration roofing in the area, and he was even hired to restore the R5 Line Train Station roofs. “My dad is now a consultant for a lot of companies because of his extensive experience,” Kevin said proudly. “He’s one of the best in the area and in his field.”

Kevin and his dad Laurence were always close and loved spending weekends together at the shore in Ventnor. Kevin savored the chance to spend time with his dad when he was younger, and attributes his time working with his father from age 12 as a huge part of his work ethic. “I was a determined young kid,” Kevin said. “Whatever I did, it was entrepreneurial.”

After graduating from Haverford High School, Kevin went to college in Vermont, through a work-study program. In between his classes, he kept himself busy by running a deli. The lifestyle was fun and fast. Kevin also enjoyed snowboarding in Burlington 100 days out of the year while he was there. With that said, it wasn’t “home” and it wasn’t what Kevin really wanted to do.

“I realized up there what I was always destined to do,” Kevin explained.

After four years in Vermont, Kevin returned home in the early 2000s, and began working for his dad again. “I was surrounded by 30-year-olds but I didn’t care. My whole philosophy was “Show me once, and I won’t forget it,” Kevin said proudly about his younger self.

In the past 10 years, Kevin O’Donnell has taken over the company and focused on growth. He dove headfirst into the business side. Laurence stepped aside after leading the company for over 30 years, but continued to help Kevin by maintaining clients and continuing to provide the customer service and work ethic that O’Donnell Roofing is known for. By 2012, Kevin had taken the lead and the company began growing rapidly.

Since 2008, the crew has grown from 5 employees to about 50, and Kevin makes it a priority to treat every employee with time and respect. “They rely on me for work every day, and I worked hard to build these relationships and honor that,” Kevin said.

In the past seven years, Kevin began servicing commercial clients, a new branch of work that he has nurtured since taking over the company and one that he considers the first innovation he can claim as his own. The new employees and the professional growth of the company under his management have been something he takes pride in and focuses time, effort and resources on building.

Spring Vehicle and Snow Removal Equipment Tips Spring has sprung, and it’s time to start getting out and about again! Thank goodness the pandemic restrictions are easing and the 25+ inches of snow have melted away. Having just gone through the worst winter in recent years and a significant reduction in typical amount of driving, it’s important to take several steps before using or storing the vehicles and equipment that make our lives easier.

If you own snow removal equipment such as snow blowers, plows and salt-spreading equipment, take some steps now to ensure reliable operation next season as well as a long-term return on your investment. Read and understand the storage instructions in the owner’s manual. If the manual is not available, these few simple steps may help: 1. Rinse off all equipment, especially anything that may have come in contact with salt. When rinsing, use only a garden hose, do not use a power washer, which can cause water to get into and damage vital equipment parts. Before storing this equipment, make sure it’s completely dry.

2. Drain the fuel tanks and run the engine until it stalls. Leaving fuel in tanks and carburetors even for one season can make starting difficult when the equipment is needed again. This step is important for all gas-powered equipment or toys.

3. Change the oil in engines, and lube parts that have service fittings. Some snow plow manufacturers advise changing hydraulic fluid every season. If possible, store snow plow pumps and exposed pistons where they won’t be affected by the weather.

Now is the perfect time for sprucing up your vehicles for the spring and summer driving season. Whether you’ve been driving your vehicles all winter or you’re dusting off your summer ride that’s been in storage, here are three tips that may be helpful for smooth driving and extended years of reliable use: 1. Have your vehicles detailed. Whether you clean them up yourself or have a professional do it, make sure all salt and brine residue get rinsed off the undercarriage.

2. Clean the interiors and replace cabin air filters. When a vehicle has been sitting unused for a while, the cabin air filter and heater ducts are common areas for rodents to enter and make their nests. Have a helper run through the operation of

electrical components such as lights. Rodents love to nibble on vehicle wire harnesses.

3. As always, keep up with scheduled maintenance. Have the fluids checked and topped off, and set the tire pressure to specs on the door frame.

Let’s Gather in the Circle

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Tucked away from all of Newtown Square’s noisy roadwork and never-ending construction is a little slice of hometown pride called St. Albans Circle. This hidden gem is home to many diverse local businesses, charming, historic buildings and nearby walkable neighborhoods. But be honest: How many times have you taken this roundabout just to avoid traffic on West Chester Pike? Do you ever think to stop and shop?

The business owners “on the circle” invite you to take a second look. Many have established themselves in St. Albans because they recognize it as a special part of our community. From the central location to the proximity to major roads and transportation, this unique section of Newtown Square also seems to be the last remaining spot that hasn’t been transformed into one of today’s cookie-cutter shopping districts.

One of the first events to take place is the Newtown Square Farmers Market. Beginning June 4th, the market will run every Friday from 3pm to 6pm through September. Pam Purser, co-Chair of Gather in the Circle, said, "I am looking forward to all of the projects that we are planning this year, but I am especially excited to be heading up the Newtown Square Farmers Market! We have received such a great response from the community and can’t wait to showcase amazing local growers, producers and artisans."

healthy, locally grown delicious food.” Other vendors’ specialty items will include artisan breads, coffee, pickles, flowers, plants and candles. Plans are also underway to offer entertainment and activities for the whole family.

Another fantastic project in the works for spring and early summer is a Pop-up Park in St. Albans Circle. The Gather in the Circle committee is excited to partner with Newtown Square in Bloom, to create a space where folks can gather and relax. The temporary park will feature native trees and plants, benches and gardens and local artwork. Newtown Square Business Association President and Gather in the Circle co-Chair Paul Seligson said, “This park will be a great example of how we can turn underused paved surfaces into something healthy, green and interactive.” Look for more information coming soon for this outdoor oasis!

If you typically use the circle as your cut-through to West Chester Pike or Route 252, you may be wondering how these events will all take place without closing the roads to vehicle traffic. It’s no secret that the circle can be dangerous to navigate, especially as a pedestrian. The Gather in the Circle committee recognizes this challenge and is in the process of exploring how physical changes to existing roads such as painted crosswalks and directional signs, even if temporary, can calm vehicle speeds and increase pedestrian safety.

As we begin to return to normal, it’s important to remember all the local businesses who have consistently shown up to lend their support to our community year after year. Whether it be

Newtown Edgmont Little League Announces Exciting News

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard, Photos courtesy of Daren Grande Oh, how the sweet sounds of spring fill the air! Birds are chirping, kids are playing and bats are cracking over at Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL). Baseball season is officially here!

Boys and girls from all over town have been eager to return to the fields. It’s been a long winter of waiting, and players and families alike have come back to the place they call their second home. NELL is truly a special spot where kids ages 4 through 12, of all playing abilities, learn to develop their love of the game. From Tee Ball to competitive tournament teams, NELL offers an ideal environment for players to excel and for families to enjoy their time at the fields.

Aside from the sheer excitement of returning to baseball, NELL Board President Daren Grande tells us that much more is in store.

“We are undergoing a major and much-needed renovation this year,” he said. “We have a new snack bar and new bathrooms, and players will love the new dugouts and field improvements!”

Such improvements include a complete overhaul of Field 1

with new fencing, scoreboard, backstop and renovations to the Peterson Building that sits behind home plate.

Daren shares more exciting news. “For the first time since 1996, NELL has been chosen to host the Pennsylvania State Tournament in 2023!” he said. “So, these renovations are happening at the perfect time.” The tournament, for 11- and 12-year-old players, will bring the top eight teams in the state to NELL. The winning team will then advance to the Mid-Atlantic region tournament where they will play for the opportunity to go to the Little League World Series.

Visitors who have come to NELL in the past have always been amazed by the complex, which offers a memorable experience for players and families. It’s an impressive layout of eight meticulously maintained fields, six outdoor batting cages, a 15,000 square foot indoor facility, a snack bar that rivals area restaurants, and plenty of on-site parking. It’s hard to believe it’s only going to get better!

How to Achieve a Gold Medal Garden...

Field 1 renovations

These exciting renovations come at a price of course. Because NELL is a volunteer-directed 501(c)(3), they rely heavily on volunteers and funding from the community. One of the fundraising initiatives this spring is NELL’s Green Picket Fence campaign: Families can purchase a personalized, engraved placard that will be affixed to the new composite fence surrounding Field 1. On April 9, 1956, just past Noon, the Marple-Newtown High School custodian, George Earle, was eating lunch in a basement room. He smelled smoke, opened the door to an adjacent storage room, and found it in flames. At the same time, teacher Anne Campbell saw smoke and instructed her class to leave the building. The fire alarm sounded. A contemporary news article noted that 750 pupils and 38 teachers filed out in two minutes, in orderly fashion.

The fire alarm was supposed to alert the nearby fire companies, but someone noticed that the phone wires from the building had burned. Two students jumped in their cars and raced to the Newtown and Marple firehouses, to give the alarm. When teacher

The fire destroyed the original 1914 portion of the building, causing $500,000 worth of damage. The silver lining? The million dollar addition then under construction, largely escaped damage. Classes were suspended that week while the school board met to devise a plan for getting students back to the classroom. (At that time, the high school included students in grades 7 - 12.)

Cleaning up the debris from the fire

The Haverford Junior High building had been recently closed for renovations. Haverford offered that building for use, so students in grades 8-10 temporarily went there. Students in grades 11 and 12 were relocated to the incomplete new addition while work continued all around them. And 7th-grade students were split up: Some attended classes at Garrett Williamson Lodge, others at the Marple grade school.

In the fall of 1956, the 10th - 12th grade students had classes every morning in the old high school’s intact portion, and 8th- and 9th-graders had classes there afternoons 12:00 - 4:15pm. Double sessions continued that way until January 1958, when the new high school (grades 10 - 12) opened and the renovated old building became the new junior high (grades 7 - 9).

Highlights of Legislation Impacting Your 2020 Income Taxes Included in the massive legislation passed by Congress in 2020, to address the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, were a number of tax breaks that caused taxpayers a great deal of confusion. As the May 17 tax-filing deadline approaches, here’s some Q&A about 2020 tax returns.

Q: What can I do to reduce my 2020 income tax?

A. If you’re eligible for a traditional IRA in 2020, you can make a maximum tax-deductible contribution of $6,000 plus, based upon your age, an extra $1,000 catch-up contribution. The IRA must be set up and funded by May 17, 2021. Even if only one spouse has wages or self-employment income, both spouses may be eligible for a separate contribution.

If you claim a standard deduction instead of itemizing deductions, you’re eligible to deduct $300 in charitable contributions you made during 2020. If you itemize deductions, your cash contributions to most charities during 2020 are deductible up to 100% of your income. (The previous limitation was 60% of your income.)

If you have business or rental income from a sole proprietorship or a pass-through entity such as a partnership, an LLC or an S corporation, remember to claim the qualified income deduction of 20%.

Q: Is there any special tax relief if I took a distribution from my traditional IRA? A. Normally, distributions from traditional IRAs are taxed in the year received plus a 10% penalty if you are under 59½. During 2020, if you hadn’t reached age 59½ when you took a distribution from a retirement plan or traditional IRA due to COVID-19, the normal 10% penalty for a premature distribution is waived on distributions up to $100,000. The distribution is still taxable but you can elect to pay that tax over three years. On the other hand, amounts re-contributed within three years will not be taxable.

Q: Is there any special tax relief if my business had a loss in 2020?

A. If your sole proprietorship or pass-through entity incurred a loss in 2020, you may be eligible to receive a cash refund by carrying the loss against the taxable income reported on your

2015 through 2019 income tax returns. While you have three years to amend prior year returns by filing IRS Form 1040X, you may be able to receive a “quick refund” by filing Form IRS 1045, but it must be filed by December 31, 2021.

Q: Is the stimulus money I received taxable?

A. Stimulus checks paid to individuals are not taxable income.

They are advance payments of a refundable tax credit that must be reconciled on your IRS Form 1040. PPP loans to businesses that are spent on payroll and other eligible expenses are not taxable income when forgiven. The initial IRS ruling — that expenses paid with the forgiven PPP loans were not deductible — created an unexpected tax liability for borrowers. Congress solved that dilemma by mandating that expenses paid with the forgiven PPP loans are deductible. Pennsylvania has adopted the same treatment as the federal government.

We Are 70% Water!

Our body is 70% water. To maintain our internal chemistry, we must drink plenty of water. But not all water is beneficial to our body and overall health. Water is acidic or alkaline, measured by the pH scale, numbers that range from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline), with 7 being neutral and our blood being 7.4.
