Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Your Carpets!

by Expert Contributor Jim Casar, Owner of Carpet Warehouse

Has winter snow and ice gotten tracked into your house, causing your carpets to look dirty and spotted? It's hard to keep carpets looking clean during the winter. But now that spring is here, it's important to remove from your carpets all the mud and salts that came in on wet shoes and boots.

One of the most important things you can do all year long is vacuum your carpets. Regular vacuuming helps keep them looking good by keeping the carpet pile raised, not looking dull and flat, which is what happens when dirt breaks down the carpet fibers. But vacuuming alone can’t get all the dirt out of your carpets.

If you really want to get to “the bottom of things” by removing all the dirt and restoring your carpets to like-new conditions, you have to bring in a professional. The money spent on professional carpet cleaning will protect your investment and help your carpet look better longer. Sure, carpet shampooers and steam-cleaning machines do a modest job, but they’re not designed to remove deep-down dirt. They simply don’t pack enough punch to properly handle the job.

The carpet's fibers and backing are prematurely destroyed when dirt remains in the carpet for an extended period of time. In order to loosen and extract all the dirt completely — all the way down to the backing — a professional-grade carpet-cleaning machine must be used.

If you have had new carpet installed in the past, you know that usually includes a manufacturer’s warranty. Bringing in a certified specialist to clean your carpet every 12 to 18 months, and following the manufacturer’s other maintenance requirements, will ensure that your warranty will be honored. Just don’t forget to keep those receipts that prove regular deep cleaning was done.

It’s time to open those windows and get ready for fresh air and flowers! Everything in your home should look and feel new in springtime. As you take the time to spruce up your home, add professional carpet cleaning to your list. Hire a certified professional carpet cleaning company and you’ll immediately notice the difference. Dirty, dingy winter-worn carpets will look brighter and feel and smell cleaner.
