How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Plantar Fasciitis
by Expert Contributor Dr. Heather Sefried, D.C., Owner of The Joint Chiropractic - Newtown Square
Many people suffer from plantar fasciitis. Its symptoms often cannot be effectively relieved by traditional care. Chiropractic care has proven to be an excellent holistic treatment plan for plantar fasciitis sufferers because it reduces their symptoms and improves their quality of life.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a condition that refers to a lingering pain on the bottom of the foot. The stabbing heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis is frequently experienced with the first few steps you take each morning. Your heel pain may decrease briefly as you move about throughout the day, but after long periods of sitting or standing, the pain may again return and be even more intense.
Plantar fascia is the thick connective tissue that supports the arch on the bottom of the foot from your heel to your toes. When this tissue becomes inflamed, irritated or damaged, it can cause pain and discomfort in your heel. Because a lot of the pain is due to inflammation, chiropractic care helps reduce inflammation and improve the flexibility of motion in your foot.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
If the ligament that supports the arch becomes strained, plantar fasciitis can occur. There are several different precipitating factors that can increase your risk of developing this condition, including:
• Having flat feet (or, conversely, high-arched feet)
• Overpronating (rolling your feet inward when you walk)
• Age (plantar fasciitis is most common between ages 40-60)
• Being overweight
• Hip misalignment
• Having tight Achilles tendons
• Standing for long periods of time in bad shoes
• Wearing the wrong shoes
• Certain types of exercise including running, aerobic dance and cycling

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Plantar Fasciitis?
Chiropractic adjustments done by a licensed chiropractic practitioner can help reduce or eliminate restrictions along the joints, muscles and other parts of the foot. As those restrictions are eased or removed, the pain caused by inflammation in the foot may be alleviated significantly. Adjustments will also help increase the work and movement range flexibility of the calf, allowing your foot to relax. Having your chiropractor do regular adjustments can help you live with plantar fasciitis comfortably and pain-free.
