JILLIAN MICHAELS & TEE MAJOR So you want to lose some weight, but not sure where to start? This is the first major challenge that prevents many people from getting healthier and more fit. The unknown makes it easy to come up with excuses for not taking the first step in becoming a better you. Then there are the people who achieve the first step by starting a weight loss regimen, but falter when things start to fall apart – be it losing motivation, missing a few workouts or the results are not coming fast enough.

5 ways to turn your house into a holistic hotspot I’m a business owner and a mom of 4 and over the past few years, my gym membership has been collecting dust. Fit

BY CAROLYN ERICKSON

Fashionista

Andi Neugarten was born in South Africa. She grew up playing tennis and , at 16, when she forced to give up her dreams of a tennis career, she took up running. Not just running like you and I know running.....she embraced long distance running. To date, Andi has as over 100 marathons under her belt and has been running for over 20 years. CE: You stated you had to move away from your home in South Africa. Why did you leave and why San Diego?

CE: Really??? 100 marathons and that wasn’t enough? Your makin me look bad. LOL. What else is there?

CE: That was something I didn’t see coming. The clothes were your concern rather than the competitions?

AN: This was the biggest, boldest decision I have ever made in my life. We literally left the perfect home, perfect jobs, and a perfect life. We left Johannesburg in 2002 when the political situation was getting worse and worse. It was no longer safe for us and our future was not secure. We chose San Diego because of the large South African population that resides here and it is similar to South Africa in a lot of ways.

NE: I set my sights on triathlons but first I had to learn how to swim. (she laughs). I mean I knew how to swim but not fast and certainly not competitively. I joined a Masters Swim program and learned how to swim against the clock. If you ever want to really learn how to swim, just join a Masters Swim program. They are incredible. The bike was also a challenge. I had never been on a bike outside…ever… It was very scary learning how to clip the pedals in and out and of course I fell a few times.

AN: Yes, absolutely. I was so frustrated with the apparel available to women triathletes. The running shorts didn’t fit right, the fabric was all wrong, the colors were ugly, the bike shorts were polyester and swimsuits were horribly tailored. Everything about them was bad. I hated it. I had searched everywhere for apparel that worked until one day I decided to make my own. I bought some fabric and hired a designer who started making me custom-made athletic wear. I designed the outfits so that when I got off of my bike at Starbucks, I could walk into the shop and still feel sexy and beautiful and get back on my bike and finish what I was doing. I work very hard on my body and I finally had something to wear that appropriately showed it off.

While listening to a speaker at UCSD one evening, Andi became motivated to dive deeper into sports. The speaker was just an ordinary woman who explained how she had completed an ironman and boy did this ever speak to Andi. With all the running she was doing, she finally admitted she had become a little bored and wanted a change. She knew that she wanted and that she could do more. It was then she strategically designed her next steps.

10

best self san diego / june 2016

Soon after she had been comfortably riding her road bike locally, Andi took part in a 650 mile bike ride from San Francisco to San Diego. She was more than ready to take on the triathlon world but competing as a triathlete was no longer the concern. While training for this new venture she was getting more and more irritated with, of all things… the clothing selection available to her.

CE: That is really amazing! I am sure that is why you continued the line as it is today. Where did you come up with the name Alii Sport?

www.bestselfmagazine.com

AN: Everybody I came across loved the clothes. Women were asking me where I bought it and how they could get their hands on it I knew there was a need for an endurance lifestyle apparel that is classy, functional, and fashionable and feminine, but I didn’t anticipate diving in to the retail business. It is amazing to think that the love of my sport brought me on this path. I came up with Alii because anyone that knows about triathlons knows about Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Alii Drive is the name of the street that takes you across the finish line at Ironman Kona. You have to work so hard to get to this event. You can’t just show up and compete. You have to qualify. To me, Alii is a mindset that translates to strong and sexy. In Hawaiian, the word means royal. I just loved how Alii just seemed to work for the name of the clothing line. It’s royal, it’s feminine, it’s powerful. Alii Sport is all about an endurance lifestyle. We understand how hard you work to stay in shape. Whether you go to the gym, do yoga or swim, bike and run, we believe that you are an endurance athlete if you are passionate about staying in shape and you incorporate some sort of work out into your daily routine. And, as a busy modern woman, you have no time to think about what to wear throughout your day. You are juggling family, career and life and you need clothing that will take you from your early morning workout into the evening. Alii Lifestyle bridges the gap between performance and fashion and delivers beautiful lifestyle garments that take you from your early morning swim, to carpool, to a meeting, to the mall or market and then out to dinner. All the garments are made from Italian performance fabrics and can be worn to run or work out. The best thing about them is that they are stylish enough to wear out for a night on the town. You can find Alii in local boutiques, and on line at Aliisport.com. We ship all over the world! Ladies, ladies, ladies… if you like to workout and still look like a million bucks, you might want to check out Alli Sport. I am sure you will wonder how you ever got along with it. Happy shopping!!!

DROPPING KNOWLEDGE (AND POUNDS) WITH JILLIAN MICHAELS & TEE MAJOR S o you want to lose some weight, but not sure where to start? This is the first major challenge that prevents many people from getting healthier and more fit. The unknown makes it easy to come up with excuses for not taking the first step in becoming a better you. Then there are the people who achieve the first step by starting a weight loss regimen, but falter when things start to fall apart – be it losing motivation, missing a few workouts or the results are not coming fast enough.

The reality is that each of these challenges are opportunities to build your confidence and become a stronger individual, but to ensure you overcome those roadblocks you have to have a plan, a great mindset and a support group to help you keep your eye on the prize. Best Self San Diego recently spoke with Jillian Michaels and Tee Major to gather their expertise and offer guidance on how to start and stick to a weight loss regimen with the goal of becoming your best self. Both Michaels and Major are trainers on FITFUSION.com and bring unique perspectives when it comes to kickstarting and sticking with a weight loss and fitness program. Michaels is America’s health and wellness expert and creator of dozens of fitness programs and DVDs like Hot Body, Healthy Mommy, Beginner Shred, One Week Shred, Ripped in 30 and others. Major is the YouTube fitness sensation with his 44 Best Bodyweight Exercises Ever (it has over 12 million views!), creator of Militant Athletes Extreme Physical Training (MAX PT) program and U.S. Armed Forces trainer who most recently trained the U.S. Navy on Coronado Island. 14

BSSD: What advice would you have for someone just starting out on a weight loss/fitness program?

will feel. Envision your new self and what it will feel like to not have the extra weight you are trying to lose.

JM: Find your ‘why’. It does not matter how superficial or profound it is, as long as it matters to you. It can be as simple as fitting into a certain size or style of jeans. It could be walking your daughter down the aisle or performing the mother-son dance. If it matters to you, you’ll fight through the tough days. The other critical component is nutrition. Educate yourself and find a couple of resources you trust with regards to tracking calorie intake, portion size, foods to avoid, etc. Lastly, you have to find a fitness regimen that keeps you engaged because it makes it just a little easier to stay committed.

TM: Make it official. I get my clients to write down their goal(s) because it makes it more real. Write it on post-it notes and place it around the house – next to your alarm clock, on the bathroom mirror, in the kitchen or in your car. Each time you see the note, visualize accomplishing your goal – it’s a powerful practice to maintain focus and direction. Lastly, enlist the support of friends, family, and co-workers. Tell everyone about your goals. You’d be surprised how supportive most people will be by your openness. You may even inspire others to make healthy changes in their own lives.

TM: In addition to those, the mental game is as important. It is so easy to get distracted by the aesthetics and superficiality of fitness and lose focus on the form and function of working out. I tell my clients to get back to the basics and encourage those just starting their fitness journey to start with bodyweight training. There is simplicity in bodyweight training and starting with the basics gives the mind and body a chance to stay steadfast on your fitness journey.

BSSD: What are some go-to workouts you recommend for fitness beginners?

BSSD: What tips do you give your clients to stay motivated during a weight loss program?

JM: It just depends on your fitness level and personal preferences. That’s why it’s important to find regimens that you find engaging. A resource like FITFUSION. com is so great because there are over 300 workouts from top notch trainers so no matter what your fitness level or what workout you love, there is something for you. A couple other benefits include being able to do the workouts in the comfort of your own home. You can also access FITFUSION anywhere so you can stick with your program when you are traveling or on-the-go.

JM: This sounds simple, but remind yourself of how awesome being healthy

TM: As I mentioned before, bodyweight workouts, no matter your fitness level,

www.bestelfmagazine.com

will always be king because you can progress the movements to make them easier or more difficult. That’s the same with MAX PT because it’s definitely made to get our military personnel in top notch shape, but it’s also scalable (can make the movements easier or harder) so someone just starting out can still get an amazing workout done in just 30 minutes. To see more variations of bodyweight moves and some out of this world pushups (see his crucifix pushup!) or need daily motivators, follow Major (@ TeeMajor) on Instagram. He also offered a favorite workout that requires nothing more than your body (and maybe a towel). “For San Diegans, get the most of your “sunshine tax” by getting out to the beach and performing a high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout. My favorite from my time in Coronado was to pick a few bodyweight exercises like burpees, lunges, squat jumps, pushups, and planks and arrange them in a circuit. Perform 30 seconds of each exercise with 1-2 minutes of rest in between each set for 8-12 rounds for a quick and functional workout.” So if you are ready to finally start that weight loss journey, determine the driving force for why you want to make the change and don’t settle until you achieve that objective. It will be tough, but build a support crew that keeps you motivated. Start today and never look back because it is up to you to become the best version of you.

How to Envision or Visualize Your Best Health

B

ased on research in neuroscience, humans think in pictures. Even for people who say they aren’t ‘visual’, they are simply seeing images so fast they aren’t aware of it. If you have any doubt about this, notice the next time you’re worried about something, it’s usually a scene you’re playing out in your mind that you’re afraid will happen. Of course there’s lots of mental commentary too, but that moves slower than images and thus, tends to be easier to notice. A core tenet in Chinese Medicine is “Qi follows the mind”. Qi is life force, the very force pumping your blood, beating your heart, and conducting nerve impulses right now as you read these words. There are the unconscious, or automatic life force happenings, the things you don’t have to consciously direct, like the digestion of your last meal, and then there is conscious awareness, directed by choice. This is where you can affect your health in extremely positive ways by the use of visioning or visualizing. Visualizing is the very least you can do to bring about the very most in change. After a tipping point of regular imagery fed to your brain, your life force will cause that outcome at the level of your cells. Let’s dive in to the three simple ways of affecting such powerful change in your health! 1)

2)

3)

18

Get clear on the results you’re intending. It could be better sleep, less pain, or overall vitality. Clarity is key. If you aren’t clear, you’ll ping all over the place, which doesn’t work. Imagine your desired outcome as if it’s here right here and now in your present moment. Envision from this perspective. See yourself in this desired result (in other words don’t watch yourself as if on an external screen, see yourself in the vision enjoying your outcome as you) and see as many details of the outcome as you can, movements, smells, textures, tastes, sights, colors, and any other vivid details you can playfully imagine. Feel what you will feel (with the enhancement), right now. Gratitude, joy, blessed, whatever it is you’d expect to feel, have that experience now in your vision. Emotions are like rocket fuel for our visions and they move energy quickly. Visualizing with emotion is one of the fastest ways to shift matter (i.e. your body).

Any or all of these elements may seem strange at first, but that’s only because it’s unfamiliar. The more you play with it, the more familiar it becomes, and the more you’ll see the changes over time. A key to the process is bypassing the mind. If your mind won’t let you imagine a pain free shoulder because right now it bloody hurts, then go broad and envision overall health. See and feel your whole body as vital and healthy, which will help settle the one or more parts that aren’t there yet. The idea is to be relaxed when you visualize, if you’re tense or resistant for any reason, try a different vision angle until you find one that helps you stay open and enjoy the process. Visualizing a few minutes at a time is all that’s necessary, as many times throughout the day as want. The key: don’t until your vision materializes!

Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM) of food involves the laboratory process of artificially inserting genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. The result is called a genetically modified organism, or GMO. GMO’s can be engineered with genes from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals, or even humans. Since GMO’s were introduced in 1996, many health problems have skyrocketed: food allergies, autism, reproductive disorders, organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, infertility, and digestive disorders. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Sucrose, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), Xanthum Gum, Vitamins, Yeast Products, Flinstones vitamins. The list goes on and on.

Some people believe GMO’s are safe. The people who have done research and read even a little bit about GMO’s, know differently.

On any given day, most people are opening their kitchen cupboard or refrigerator and * Corn unknowingly consuming food with GMO’s. Please, please educate yourselves and read * soybeans * canola labels. * cottonseed * tomatoes Buying ‘Certified Organic’ does mean there are no GMO’s, but any product * Hawaiian papaya * alfalfa labeled as Non-GMO indicates that its manufacturing process is designed to * yellow squash * zucchini avoid GMOs. Consumers should be aware that GM contamination is possible due to * potatoes natural pollen movement, weather events, * alfalfa (from a cows diet) seed contamination, or human error. Hence * beef there is no guarantee such products are 100% free of GMOs. The list does go on…

There are many things I did not touch upon in this article, including the name of the company that has started this whole mess. There are numerous websites, books and articles out there that will educate you about GMO’s.

Tips for avoiding GM crops: Buy Certified Organic- It must be 100% organic to be non-GMO Look for ‘non-GMO’ labels Avoid the top GMO food sources:

GMOs are hidden in common processed food ingredients such as: Amino Acids, Aspartame, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin C, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Flavorings (“natural” and “artificial”), High Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Lactic Acid, Maltodextrin, Molasses, 20

There are at least twenty-six, including: Switzerland, Australia, Austria, China, India, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Mexico and Russia. Significant restrictions on GMOs exist in about sixty other countries.

The book, ‘Your Right to Know: Genetic Engineering and the Secret Changes in Your Food’, by Andrew Kimbrell is a good place to start! Please stand up for our food supply and protect yourselves!!

Must-Know Tips to Shop your Farmers’ Market like a Pro By Lauren Forgione Chef Abe Botello of West Coast Tavern in North Park is known for creating craveable dishes using the freshest ingredients sourced from local farmers’ markets. Since many of us tend to stick to our usual shopping list, we thought some valuable tips from a pro might inspire all of us to create something new for dinner. What are some examples of your farmers’ market inspired dishes? Some of our farmers’ market inspired dishes include Butter Poached Seabass Zuchinni Pasta; Sauteed Market Veggies; Quinoa Stuffed Bell Pepper; Roasted Tomato Soup; Grilled Cauliflower Steak; and Carrot Rissotto. Habits are hard to break. Like only buying basics like tomatoes and avocado. How can we explore new items? All the veggies sold at the market are being sourced directly from the farms, sold by the farmers and they only sell what is in the peak of the season. A key tip is to engage and ask questions with the vendors – they are always happy to share some knowledge. Do you have a favorite recipe you may be willing to share (or technique) on how to cook with those delicious squash blossoms? Squash blossoms are really fun to work with and versatile, Stuffing is the best way to go, if you choose to go vegetarian you can stuff them with pesto, goat cheese, of your favorite filling, you can also stuff with ground beef, chicken or even lobster or shrimp. These little guys can be battered in tempura and fried, sautéed or steamed. What are you most excited about as far as summer produce from local farms in Southern California? Summer is one of my favorite seasons as far as vegetables go. This summer, I’ll be on the look put for tomatoes, Zucchini, Peppers, Lettuce, Radishes and Peas. What are your favorite farmers’ markets in San Diego? I have a few favorites markets here in San Diego, starting in North Park right in the backyard of my kitchen (North Park Thursday Market), Little Italy is another favorite, and the Otay Ranch Market near home. www.bestselfmagazine.com

What other places do you go to source the freshest ingredients? (Seafood, etc.?) Specialty Produce, San Diego Seafood & Central Meats. Executive Chef Abraham Botello of North Park favorite, West Coast Tavern is known fondly as “Chef Abe.” His warm spirit, love of cooking and family heritage in the restaurant industry come together to inspire his delicious menu featuring “upscale tavern food.” He previously worked at Urban Solace in North Park and Solace and The Moonlight Lounge in Encinitas. A recognized award winner, Chef Abe was a Tops Finalist in the Food & Wine Festival and has won the “People’s Choice” award at various festivals including Bacon & Barrels and the “Solno” chili cook-off. Best Self reader tip: Head to North Park on a Thursday afternoon to check out their North Park Thursday Market (runs 3-7pm on North Park Way right behind West Coast Tavern, 2895 University Ave.) then enjoy a bite to eat at West Coast Tavern to try Chef’s dishes for yourself.

ENLIGHTEN YOUR WORKLOAD BY KAREN JOY

There is a great synergy between a spiritual practice and a livelihood when we slow down enough to allow the experiences to co-mingle. This marriage has been especially potent for me when I get ‘stuck’ creatively or otherwise. Here’s the map I use to navigate the challenges that come up. It’s especially helpful with people-related issues, but also works with other creative challenges. This map has provided me with many insights that have both strengthened and humbled me. The first four steps are the foundation of the map, and I start here to check my behavior and make sure it’s consistent with these principles before I go further. Many thanks to Belinda Lopes for introducing me to the work of Miguel Angél Ruiz in The 4 Agreements. The first 4 Agreements were created by Miguel Ruiz, and I added 3 of my own. 22

www.bestselfmagazine.com

First Agreement: Be Impeccable with your Word

Words have power and impact. Use them judiciously and respect their potency. This level of integrity is as important when communicating with others as it is to your thoughts about yourself and the way you talk to or about yourself.

Second Agreement: Don’t take anything Personally Other people’s communication reflects their state-of-mind, their filters, judgments, creativity, beliefs and experience. It’s not about you and it never was. What others do and say is a reflection of their own reality, and of their own dream.

Third Agreement: Don’t make Assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Get enough information to have a clear understanding and communicate clearly with others to avoid needless sadness, misunderstanding and drama. This includes making assumptions about the goodness or badness of experiences. Those judgments can be short-sighted and premature. Fourth Agreement: Always do your Best Your best is going to change from time to time depending on your state of health, and other factors that contribute to our states of consciousness. If you commit to your best, you will avoid self-judgment and regret.

I’ve added the next 3 Agreements: Fifth Agreement: It’s Your Job to deal with You

You have a responsibility to yourself, and to others, to not pollute your work or your workplace with drama, psychic baggage, and your own neuroses. When you let your fear, your anger, or your penchant for drama drive your behavior, you are putting others in a place of having to deal with you because you won’t or don’t.

on around you as a mirror of what’s happening inside of you. It’s another way of acknowledging the filters we use to choose what we pay attention to. For me, this is one of the most challenging things to do, especially when I’m faced with behavior that really angers or frustrates me. It’s often difficult to see this as an unwelcome reflection of my own behavior that I have been blind to, or as a boundary I’ve neglected to set. When I am able to refrain from judging myself or the other person, I usually become aware of the connection sooner than not.

Seventh Agreement: Silver Linings

If you find yourself stuck in momentary judgment of something that doesn’t feel good, right, or positive, make a choice to focus on the Silver Lining that’s present in every situation. I don’t mean to sound Pollyanna about ‘focus on the positive and everything will be ok’. My intention is to focus on the reality that everything is transient; events, situations, feelings and thoughts are all temporary by nature, and will pass. Because there is a balance in nature, there is a ‘good’ for every ‘bad’. It’s up to us to acknowledge what benefit can be gained from a temporary obstacle or crisis, and to shift as much of our attention as possible to that thought.

Sixth Agreement: As Within, so Without.

Relationships are Mirrors. Our outer world is a manifestation of our inner journey. When you don’t like what’s going on around you, you need to either change it or accept it. Sometimes, the easiest way to navigate change or acceptance is to view what’s going

MINDFUL OR MIND FULL? Hmmm, which are you right now? Is your mind going a mile a minute, full of all of your “to do” lists, or feeling stressed about all the work you have to do, or dwelling on something that has already happened that you wish never happened, or??? In other words, is your mind full or are you mindful of how to help yourself feel less stressed, how to get back into balance and find your “happy place?” In today’s world it is very easy to get sucked into stress and drama. But the problem isn’t really what’s going on in the world or with other people or experiences that have upset you, because unfortunately those things will always be unpredictable and uncontrollable. The problem is your reaction to the external stressors that are happening around you and triggering your own internal reactions. These are the things that keep your mind full… The sad thing is, some people don’t really know how, or maybe even remember how to get back to a balanced state of mind. How do you find peace with your reality?? Can you relate? Are you stuck listening to the committee chatter in your head that is constantly telling you what you need to do, or what you should be doing? When you turn on the news does it depress you and make you feel powerless and afraid? If you’re having a bad day, do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a downward spiral of stress and worry? When your mind is full of negative chatter and you are not doing anything to help yourself regain your emotional balance, it can leave you feeling depressed, depleted and anxious. Would you like to know how to help yourself switch gears and become mindful of how to create more peace of mind and balance in your life?? How to help yourself dump out the clutter in your mind?? 24

best self san diego / june 2016

Here are some tips: Step 1: Focus on what you are feeling. Don’t numb out with distractions. Tune into what is stressing you out and give it attention. Notice how you feel. Notice where you feel any tension in your body and be aware of it. Step 2: Breathe into it. Focus on your breath. Take 5 slow deep breaths in and then blow them out slowly to the count of 5. Feel your body relax. Step 3: Find something to be grateful for. Anything. Focus on that. Step 4: Create a mantra. Maybe something like “I am enough” or “I am where I need to be” or “I am at peace.” Whatever resonates with you, find something to repeat to yourself over and over when you find yourself with a full mind… So, what’s the bottom line here? Over-thinking and worrying about everything will only keep your mind full and it will never take away your troubles, but it will take away your peace of mind. The reality is, a peaceful, mentally strong person is not a person who has a perfect life and is always in a good situation, but rather a person who is finding a healthy way to stay balanced when life gets tough. It’s all about how you choose to react to what life throws at you. Will you choose to react in a way that makes you feel more stressed and depressed, or will you take the time to mindfully respond to whatever is bothering you or cluttering your mind?? You are in control and you CAN always choose your response to thoughts that fill your mind. Be mindful when you see that your mind is full. Will you choose to react and create more internal stress, or will you take the time to mindfully respond and help yourself get back to a more balanced state of mind? You can do this! You deserve to live a healthy, balanced life.

What would Love do? One day a beautiful woman broke my heart. I was hurt; I believed the world would no longer contain color for me. The world from then on would only be gray. Have you ever felt this way? I read the question somewhere. I wrote it down. I asked the question over and over… What would Love do? Then I listened. And Love spoke to me. Love told me many things. Love always loved no matter what. No matter the fault or blame, there was never any guilt or shame. Your Life can be changed for the better by this question. I promise. Mine was without doubt. Please experiment. When you’re hurt or angry ask yourself, what would Love do? Please be still and listen for the answer. The answer will come. 26

After that your most important relationship on the planet will be with little you inside… Letting her know from your point of view that you will never leave her and that you will praise her, I appreciate her listen to her, and breathe with her whenever she’s scared… And this will translate into a date when you’re able to be with a handsome man you’re attracted to, and stay present, free of anxiety, authentic and connected :-) so he’ll ask for the 2nd date.

ASK ALLANA Relationship Advice from Intimacy Expert, Allana Pratt www.AllanaPratt.com

Moving Past the Fear of Rejection Question: Ms. Pratt, I’m 40 and have never had a boyfriend/husband. I was in therapy , in which we have found the underlying issue for me is I grew up in an abusive household so its hard for me to deal with unwanted adrenaline. Like your clients, my fear of rejection is staggering. I’m told I have Social Anxiety so bad that it’s hard for me to be around people at all. Can you please talk about some techniques to deal with unwanted adrenaline and how to get over fear of rejection?? Thanks in advance. First off I’m so sorry for the abusive household you grew up in… All of that unwanted adrenaline would of course make your fear of rejection staggering. While I appreciate that your therapist has labeled you as having social anxiety… I would encourage you to let go of labels and take all power back into your own hands. When we label ourselves, it’s as if the only change or growth that’s possible, is ‘rearranging the furniture’. Yet when we let go of the labels, then a completely new living room is possible… does that makes sense? In my coaching sessions it’s a combination of effective tips tools and techniques that I teach mixed with the energy of healing, the energy of tenderness, the energy of safety security unconditional love, non-judgment, and total appreciation for who you are… I literally BE this energy and people have a chance to exhale ALL the way knowing they are seen, safe, heard and honored. I provide an energetic sanctuary for you to let go, heal, relax, open and come home into your heart, into your body and into the arms of the Divine. www.bestelfmagazine.com

That may sound a little woo woo and yet I’m sure you’ve heard of quantum physics. I’m sure you’ve heard of the scientific terminology of entrainment… When all of the clocks in a clock store begin to tick-tock in unison… Or when the other strings on a violin begin to vibrate when you only pluck one string… Or when many women rooming together end up having their menstruation cycles at the same time, yes? You will literally align with my vibration which is one of peace and centeredness, grounded’ness and home, nothing to prove, nothing to defend, nothing to justify or control…. just BE you. There sounds like a very young part of you wired in your brain and throughout your central nervous system that learned to survive by going into fighter flight with adrenaline in order to manage and navigate the abuse. Through a series of clearings and breathing into the discomfort with allowance and not resistance… It’s as if we go back in time and find little you and snuggle her tight and breathe with him until she calms down. This calmness creates new brain synapses which allows your central nervous system to be soothed in the present moment where you are safe.

As your relationship with yourself deepens, so does your relationship with the divine and you truly begin to not only believe but experience the Universe having your back through things like miracles and coincidences yet also through a feeling of deep peace and connection in your heart, where you feel home in your body and home on the planet. Another modality I’ve used personally and with my clients is TRE which helps people release stress from difficult life circumstances. http://www. bercelifoundation.org Look inside to see if you are ready to do this deep work with a coach/ healer like me in a series of private sessions so you could come home to the peaceful grounded centeredness that is your birthright. Many people after years of therapy get very quick results because of how far they›ve come on an intellectual basis… yet now it›s time to heal on an energetic emotional spiritual basis. I invite you to contact my manager at AllanaPratt. com and request a strategy session with me, or you could apply to receive a complimentary session at AllanaPratt.com/connect. I’m so glad you’ve reached out. You’re young, 40 with so much life and living ahead of you… it’s often darkest before the dawn, yet the dawn is immanent if you choose it, do the work, show up, let go and receive. In fact the dawn is often more amazing than you could ever imagine because of your courage, humility and willingness to BE all of you. Huge love, Allana

“Your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.”

Play nice

-Robert Holden

Our society teaches us from a very young age how to get along and play well with others. As babies we’re taught to make nice, touch gently, take turns, and share. In elementary school we learn to obey our teachers, stand in line respectfully, and salute the flag. As tweens, we attend etiquette class, cotillion, and karate, as we bow to our sensei. We’re reminded not to talk with our mouth full, take only a small serving, say please and thank you. Everything we learn at a young age is geared toward the pleasing of others. We are taught to people-please from day one; how to be liked, how to make friends, and how to impress a future employer during an interview. Then in our early 20s we focus on speaking eloquently to potential suitors, and are taught to be on our best behavior to attract a mate; with the hope of gaining the supreme prize…a proposal! It’s ingrained in us from the beginning. It’s all about them.

Self Care 101 So, tell me, did I sleep through the portion of Home Ec where they taught us that in addition to sewing on a button, we needed to learn positive self-talk? Did I miss the college course: “Care for Thyself Fundamentals?” At what point are we taught to love and honor ourselves as individuals and human beings? In what class, or at what age, are we taught anything about self-care? And why don’t we question this missing link until we reach adulthood? Employers, for example, give sick leave, but not “well leave.” It seems like people in our society need to get sick to take a break or get some well deserved time off. This is backwards.

In Michael Moore’s new film, Where to Invade Next, he visits an average couple working in Italy who get eight weeks paid vacation a year! Yes, you heard me correctly, eight weeks! They also get a two-hour lunch break every day to come home and eat with their family. The Italians insist their employees enjoy quality of life. So, assuming we can’t all just up and move to Italy, please allow me to take this moment to introduce you to Self-Care. “SelfCare, meet our Best Self Magazine Readers, Readers, meet Self-Care.”

Becoming your own best friend There is nothing more significant than the relationship we have with ourselves, as it sets the foundation for everything in our lives. Unless we are around people that know how to love themselves, most of us are unclear what that looks like, feels like, or sounds like. This is your opportunity to learn now. Part of becoming your Best Self is learning self-compassion and self-love. I have known too many unhappy people, trudging along for years, thinking they are unable to find a suitable mate or quality friendship; the fact of the matter is, they do not have a relationship with themselves. This saddens me. I ponder what our world would be like, what America could be like, if we were taught to take proper care of ourselves the way we expect others to. Self-love is the most important love a person can hold, and ahead are a few ways that you can practice more of that.

Going within There are many ways to peel back the layers of an onion. The question is, which way is best for you? In order for us to truly know ourselves, to love ourselves, we need to spend time within: undistracted, unplugged, undisturbed quiet time with ourselves.

Again, solitude is not something our society teaches us. We can learn to quiet our minds in yoga, prayer, chanting, or mindfulnessbased classes, through peaceful role models and spiritual teachers. We have become so disconnected and distracted these days. It breaks my heart. Cell phones are all but attached to our bodies. Facebook somehow climbs in bed with us at night and video games follow us around, flashing, begging us to earn points. There is certain intimacy Google can not provide. Taking time to be quiet, to do absolutely nothing but close our eyes and breathe, is a genuine act of self-love. Selflove is respect, appreciation, compassion, kindness, acknowledgement, and uplifting of one’s self.

Defining Standards and Boundaries A dynamic duo of self-love is standards and boundaries. Standards are guidelines you set for yourself in life. Boundaries are guidelines you set for others. As one changes and grows wiser, we set better standards for ourselves to achieve higher levels of fulfillment. Boundaries are positive ways to let others know how they may treat you. Yes, part of self-care is teaching others how they may treat you. Isn’t that the best? How others treat you is your choice! Standards are something we all hold, but most of us have not voiced before. It’s good practice to write out 5 standards you hold yourself to and 5 boundaries for how others may treat you. This can be a life changing experience. I got to the point where some close friends could actually voice my boundaries for me, this is when I knew I had reached a new level. One standard I have is that I do not give out a friend’s personal phone number to anyone without asking permission.

something I did. Standards and boundaries are precious entities. They are guidelines for taking quality care of yourself, and I believe that if you are reading this article, that is something you want more of.

Be selfish, get those needs met All of us have personal needs. Not primal needs like water, food, and shelter, but needs like acknowledgement, accuracy, or touch. If we don’t identify our needs and get them met, they take over. Needs drive us, chase us, and stay in the driver’s seat until we acknowledge or fulfill them. We’re not even taught that we have personal needs until they turn into undesirable behaviors like extended sadness, poor habits, or compulsions. We must identify our most immediate personal needs first, so we can create healthy steps and consistent action to get them met. Once we learn to get our personal needs met, we can start living a life from our highest values; which leads to a genuinely fulfilling life. Identifying needs is one of the first things a good coach does with their clients. One of the greatest questions we can learn to ask ourselves is, “what do I need?” If we do not meet our own needs, who will? Self-love is a practice, an art. You can begin at any point, in any place. Self-love is not something you do once in a while, or on special occasions, it is something you practice daily. You choose self-love, and commit to it, like you would a good relationship. You learn it from wise role models, rock star goddesses, or sages who have walked the path before you and written about it themselves. Self-love is perhaps the most important love a person can embrace. Without it we will not experience our Best Self in our best life, and that…is simply not an option.

A boundary I hold for others is that they speak to me respectfully, even if they are angry with

“Settling for less than the best in life gets us more of what we have always gotten. In order for us to move ahead further than we ever have before, not only do we need to do things differently, we need to change our thoughts about them as well.” www.bestelfmagazine.com

IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WORTH FIGHTING FOR? 30

best self san diego / june may 2016

www.bestselfsmagazine.com www.bestselfmagazine.com

In previous issues of Best Self Magazine, you have likely read about the five facets of a wellness lifestyle, DREAM, representing a healthy Diet, plenty of Relaxation, adequate Exercise, ensuring that you are in Adjustment, and of course, creating a life with Mental Wellness. This month I would like to delve into one of the leading causes of emotional toxicity that people experience which often takes away from their mental wellness…THE WRONG RELATIONSHIP! All too often we see friends or family members, or even ourselves in a long term relationship that seems like it’s going nowhere. So why are those two people together we ask? Well, they typically love each other; they are comfortable with one another; it would be too embarrassing to tell everyone they broke up; it’s too complicated to break up (money, property, etc); they’ve already invested so much time into the relationship; or the one that few will say but often think, “We can’t both live forever!” What if there were a calculated, scientific approach using mathematics that could actually quantify the likelihood of two people having sustainable compatibility that would increase the odds of a longterm relationship thriving, rather than just surviving? Well there is, and it is called the Ultimate Life Tool (ULT®). The ULT® is a patented advanced human assessment tool consisting of 87 questions which will demonstrate how each person in the relationship authentically shows up in nature. The ULT® will reveal what drives and motivates them to discover their natural, inborn talents versus learned skills (reliable, flakey, intimidating, controlling, loyal, over protective, compassionate, good listener, etc); their natural level of refinement and how it impacts their compatibility (messy, neat, high quality, extravagant, “crunchy”, etc); how they perceive life (from an overly optimistic or more critical standpoint); and how they best connect with people and their surroundings (needs touch, needs to move,

www.bestelfmagazine.com

needs to think, needs to be social, etc). This invaluable “operation manual” gives each partner the information needed to “feed” one another, rather than take energy away that causes unnecessary strain on the relationship. The results of this test will not only quantify important compatibility factors, but it will also provide each person with the tools necessary to help the relationship thrive. Sometimes the results reveal a significant uphill battle for a couple to survive, while other times, just the knowledge will show them what “tweaks” are needed to grow into something remarkable. As the owner of a wellness center that offers this technology and the husband of a certified ULT® Consultant and trainer, I can tell you that I have heard every excuse in the world for a couple to not take the test. One person in the relationship refuses to take it (red flag); they are afraid to learn what the test will reveal (red flag); the relationship is already too far gone and they would rather avoid doing the work necessary to move forward- either together or apart (red flag); it’s just not worth it (bright red flag)! Being in unfulfilling relationships can be one of the worst things for one’s health. It leads to increased stress, depression, anxiety, resentment, anger, and even hatred. We all know the Buddha saying, “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die”. Why not let the anger go away and all the negative effects of the bad relationship by either fixing it or ending it? People often want to know when the best time in a relationship is to take the ULT®. The answer is similar to going to the chiropractor (something I know a

lot about). Some people only go to the chiropractor when they have some type of problem causing physical pain. When they wait for the symptom to arise, they are typically in a crisis situation that requires swift attention. At that point, the chiropractor will analyze the spine and nerve system to determine the care necessary to get to the cause of the problem and make specific adjustments if necessary. This is comparable to a couple waiting until they are in a struggling relationship and either need to fix it or end it. Maybe they are “on again, off again”. Maybe they have been together for 4+ years and one person isn’t ready or willing to take the next step. Maybe both are questioning whether the next step is the right one, but neither is willing to admit there may be an issue. Then there are many who go to the chiropractor for routine checkups to help deal with the toxicity and stress of life to prevent issues from arising. This would be analogous to a couple taking the ULT® early in the relationship so they learn how to navigate the relationship so the toxicity (stress) of life doesn’t affect them negatively. Every decision a person makes is value clarification. If you (or someone you care about) values happiness and fulfilling relationships, then taking the ULT® is a great step to take. The results will either give the excuse needed to end the wrong relationship or the ammunition to fix it! DREAM Wellness is offering the readers of Best Self Magazine an opportunity for you and your significant other to test drive the ULT® at no charge AND receive a 10 minute results consultation. Email brooke@ dreamwellness.com and tell her you want the Best Self analysis and she will send you the link and code for the assessment. best self san diego / june may 2016 2016

5 ways to turn your house into a holistic hotspot

I have always loved to workout but since having 3 babies and becoming a stepmom, every moment in my day is precious time. This time was of course precious before but I have such a more heightened sense of how precious it is now that personal time is so limited.

Because my husband and I both work from home, we have implemented some strategies and practices that have helped us keep our home clean, clear and healthy. Our mission is to be walking examples of wellness and leadership for our children and we are very mindful that a family philosophy is the grounding base for excellence. We have chosen to make happiness, freedom and health the core principles of our family lifestyle. There are simple strategies we’ve implemented that help us to stick to our integrity and keep ourselves functioning optimally for ourselves and our kids. www.bestselfmagazine.com

Here are some of our simple strategies you can implement starting today to turn your home into a holistic hotspot:

1)

Treat your home as sacred space. The more spacious, clean and alive your home is, the more inspired you will be to keep up your healthy habits. Keep clutter to a minimum (or remove it all together) and create extra breathing room in your health. Remember that every inch of clutter in your home sucks your life force. The more space you have, the more you can breathe in life force. I also like to use vinegar and essential oils to clean my home.

2)

Create a holistic hotspot- find a corner or a room in your home that is dedicated to holistic health. This area of your home should make you feel alive, healthy and vibrant. Infuse this area with art, natural fibers/flooring, natural light, natural scents (like essential oils) and anything that is meaningful to your wellbeing. Crystals, yoga mats, and fitness props are also great ideas. Keep this area bright and filled with positive energy. Be mindful of keeping this space free from chemicals and toxins.

3)

Minimize electrical gadgets in your bedroom. Be mindful of how many electrical gadgets you have in your bedroom as these can impact your sleep. I suggest removing as many electrical items as possible from your bedroom. Artificial lights and even alarm clocks can mess with melatonin production. I like to encourage clients to keep their bedroom free from electrical gadgets. Remember that good sleep is the top priority for optimal health and those cell phones, ipads and laptops on your bedside table mess with melatonin.

4)

Turn your fridge into your life force engine. It’s amazing how vibrant your body and cells will feel at the very glance of a fridge packed with live, whole food. Do a fridge detox of all that isn’t serving your body well (and any foods that might be weighing you down physically and emotionally). Fuel your fridge the way your body wants to be fuelled- alive, whole and loaded with life force. The practice of doing a fridge detox and a life force refuel will make your cells smile with gratitude.

Be mindful of the language you speak in your home. We often forget that our home is our sanctuary and our sacred space. Who wants toxic energy in their home? It takes patience and discipline but implementing a daily practice of more love and kindness does wonders for the home. When we see our home as alive and vibrant, we are more mindful of the language we speak in the home. Reducing (and eventually eliminating) negative language, gossip and complaining from the home is the first step. We can then graduate to replacing this language with love languages of respect, integrity, kindness and wellbeing. Your home will thank you and so will your body. What has been most important for my husband and I is to have extreme patience and kindness during the transition phase. Making your home a holistic hotspot is simple but takes a deep commitment not only to your health but to living your greatest life with the precious time you have.
