n the last decade or so, thinking about what we’re putting into our bodies has gotten a lot more on trend. We seek out whole grains and lean meats, and we avoid processed and preserved foods. We take our health seriously and know that feeling good starts with the fuel we’re using; and the kind we’re using is getting a little … cleaner.

What It Means to Eat Clean According to fitness competitor, radio personality and passionate healthy lifestyle advocate Madison James, the first key to taking clean eating to the next level is knowing where your food comes from.

“If you get meats, fruits and vegetables produced Madison James here, in Georgia, you know it’s cleaner because nothing had to be added to keep those foods fresh for the trip from the farm to your table,” James says. “Then, it’s important to know what kind of practices a farm uses on your produce.

Think about an organic apple versus a nonorganic apple in the grocery store. The nonorganic apple is vibrant, shiny and looks like a brand-new car. The organic one doesn’t, but, it’s not supposed to. It took doing something to that nonorganic apple to get it that way—and then that is what goes into our bodies.”

“The same goes for restaurants,” she adds. “Clean eating doesn’t mean you can’t go out to eat, but you do have to ask questions. Ask where their foods came from—most of the time they’re proud to tell you it came from somewhere local. When it does, and you know that the farm where it came from doesn’t use hormones, or inject other chemicals into their animals, then you know what you’re eating is clean.”

Flower Child, in Buckhead and Sandy Springs, is one of those restaurants where you can trust what’s on your plate hasn’t been pumped with extra additives.

“People tend to think that eating ‘clean’ means eating food that’s bland in taste,” says

How Things Get Dirty The bigger problem is in additives like sodium, sugar and manufactured flavorings. Even chicken—Americans eat an average of 87 pounds of chicken per person every year, and about a third of it has been synthetically saturated with water, salt and other additives via needles and vacuums to make it juicier, tastier and more tender, according to Cooking Light. In its 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the U.S. government recommends adults consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day.

This means you can potentially rack up about a fifth of your daily allotment of sodium with “enhanced” poultry before you even think about adding your own pinch.

Tammy Stokes, a California transplant and founder of Cafe West Express, West Coast Workout, and author of “Live Your Healthiest Life,” offered her (dirty) laundry list of Tammy Stokes things to look out for. We already know to buy high-quality, grass-fed meats, organic eggs, small, cold-water fish that are low in mercury and natural sweeteners like honey, coconut nectar, molasses, maple syrup and stevia to boost eating for your health, but scary chemicals and additives are in a lot of foods we don’t think about. She pointed out some of the places where we don’t expect to see additives: • Chlorine and aluminum: bleached table salt • High fructose corn syrup: breads, candy, salad dressing, yogurt, cereal, ketchup • Monosodium glutamate (MSG): Chinese food, chips, lunch meats, soups, broths • Trans fat: fried and fast foods, margarine, baked goods • Artificial sweeteners: gum, toothpaste, breath mints, chewable vitamins, tea • Sulfur dioxide: beer, dried fruits, juices, vinegar, potato products • Nitrates: lunch meats, bacon, ham, cured meats, smoked fish • Food dyes: The worst ones are Blue No. 1 and No. 2, Red No. 1, Yellow No. 6

How can you get healthier and feel better when the food industry makes it so hard? It starts with knowing how to read labels, learning what to avoid and not being afraid to ask questions. The result is an enjoyable, manageable lifestyle—free of junk—that we can maintain forever.

“I call it eating for your health,” says Raul Hiteshew, a self-named nutritarian, competitive bodybuilder and founder of HiveFit All Natural Supplements. “By avoiding artificial sweeteners, colorants, synthetic preservatives or Raul Hiteshew anything that wasn’t intended by nature, clean eating naturally sets up our bodies to prevent illness and live a vibrant life.”

But sometimes, those additives are even in products customers are buying to actually “get healthier.”

“You are not required to list an ingredient in a supplement if it’s under half a gram (500 milligrams), or even list the amount used if it’s a nonactive ingredient,” Hiteshew says. “Some of these ingredients, a little goes a long way, and even half a gram is actually very unhealthy. Grab any protein powder and read the ‘other ingredients’ below the nutrition label.

You will see fillers, anticaking agents, flowing agents and preservatives— and this is assuming you’re drinking a healthy product that doesn’t use artificial colorants and sweeteners.”

Our lesson? Look at the labels, and check the ingredients to reveal exactly what’s about to go in your body. If you’re opting for something packaged, choose those made with whole ingredients you’d be able to find in your own pantry.

Too much fat leads to high blood pressure, bad cholesterol and potentially serious heart issues. Many chemicals and additives have been associated with increasing the risk of cancer. In general, toxins lead to inflammation, and inflammation prevents our bodies from fighting disease, staying healthy and operating the way they were meant to.

“When you eat foods that are clean, like fresh produce and simply prepared proteins, you feel an energy that lifts you up and is more consistent over time,” Bondhus says.

“Clean eating is based on the foundation of eating foods that create health not deteriorate it,” says Stokes. “Food is either good medicine or a bad drug, and eating clean is the first step to better health.”

How to Beat the Tricks and Train Your Palate “The technology and psychology behind making packaged foods is shockingly advanced. You can control taste, reactions and emotions by modifying it genetically or simply adding sugars, MSG, phosphate salts, etcetera,” says Hiteshew. “It can get overwhelming quickly, but if you start reading labels before something goes into your shopping cart, you can beat the sneaky marketing strategies and fill your pantry with the right foods.”

“Once you stop eating so much sugar, salt and unnecessary fat in your food, you’ll actually be able to taste fresh, delicious pure flavors,” says Nancy Waldeck, a healthy chef and “partyologist” who turned her love for food and entertaining Nancy Waldeck into a healthy lifestyle. “When eaters realize that they can make food at home that is delicious and tastes better than the food they have been ordering out, it opens up the possibilities to feel and look better.

“Being a label detective is the best way to shop,” she adds. “I often use a box of organic mac and cheese to illustrate this.

That ‘organic’ product contains excess sugar, salt and loads of preservatives, even though you thought you were buying something healthy. When you make mac and cheese at home, you can make it super delicious and you get to be in charge of the ingredients.”

Stokes adds, “Clean food tastes real and delicious, because most of the time it is made with fruits and vegetables that are fresh and in season, so the flavors are at their peak.”

“Real clean eating doesn’t mean you have to eliminate whole food groups or never go out to eat again,” James says. “It’s simply about eating real, whole foods, and eliminating the junk that doesn’t belong in our bodies. It takes work and commitment, yes, but the people who do it have never felt better.”

Be Leery of Labels With plenty of ways to say “healthy” these days, you have to read ingredients to know what’s really in your food. Here’s the truth on what some of the most common package labels mean, and which ones you should and shouldn’t trust.

Organic A USDA organic seal or a label of 100-percent organic are the only labels that truly mean a product is organic. But not all farmers pay to have their products certified, so just ask at your local farmers market.

Natural There is no universal standard or definition for this label so it gets used and abused. A typical label might say, “made with all-natural cheese,” but the product contains all kinds of preservatives to keep that “natural” cheese fresh.

Local Local is a common term, thanks to the surge of the farm-to-table trend, especially in restaurants. But because there is no regulation on this label, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a product is clean.

Free-range If you’re passionate about this concept, you’ll have to do your research, because this label simply means the animals were able to spend some of their time outside of containment—that could be 10 minutes or 10 hours. It doesn’t mean they don’t spend time in confined living conditions, and doesn’t say anything about the quality of those conditions.

Hormone Free This is another noncertified label, so while it does mean a farmer has chosen not to inject his or her cows with artificial growth hormones, it doesn’t apply to poultry, because it’s illegal to inject chickens with hormones.

Gluten Free Using this buzzword captures a lot of attention from people trying to avoid gluten, but it’s not necessarily healthier for those who don’t have an allergy or an intolerance. In fact, gluten-free versions of some food may have less fiber, so it draws your eye with no real advantage.

Sugar Free The FDA allows for small amounts of sugar, even when foods carry this label, so if you’re eating these foods in excess, know that these tiny amounts can start to add up. Also sugar-free foods may not be calorie or carbohydrate free, which is bad for someone with diabetes. Sugar alcohols, a common substitute, can also cause digestive discomfort.

Dr. Azi (as her patients call her) attended the Georgia State University, graduating with her undergraduate degree in mathematics and chemistry. She continued on to the Medical College of Georgia where she earned her Doctorate of Dental Medicine. In order to become a specialist in pediatric dentistry, Dr. Azi completed a two-year residency at Colorado Children’s Hospital where she also served as chief resident. During these two years, Dr. Nia treated a diverse population of medically compromised patients and people with special healthcare needs and was an active participant with the craniofacial lip and palate team. She also gained expertise in advanced behavior guidance techniques, hospital dentistry, trauma and prevention.

Dr. Azi is dedicated to providing excellent pediatric dental care and building confidence in her patients. Creating a positive dental experience customized to each young patient is central to her practice philosophy. She believes in supporting her patients and their families by finding realistic solutions and preventing problems before they arise. Dr. Azi’s greatest goal is helping a child overcome their fear and anxiety and getting them to a point where they actually enjoy their appointments.

H

aving a physician who is skilled in women’s health, understands gynecoendocrinology, and is comfortable prescribing compounded pharmaceuticals is a requirement for successful bioidentical hormone supplementation. It is this physician who will monitor your clinical response to treatment, evaluate you for any side effects, and adjust the dose of your compounded prescription to precisely meet your needs. The benefits described below can only be obtained from a compounding pharmacy because pharmaceutical companies do not manufacture bioidenticals. All of these elements are necessary to ensure a successful outcome for a woman on balanced bioidentical hormone supplementation.

How the Hormones are Delivered In my opinion, the preferred way for a postmenopausal woman to supplement with bioidentical hormones is by using an elegant cream formulation of balanced hormones given vaginally at bedtime. This is done by using a simple applicator and has four benefits. First, the dose required for topical administration is only 1/10 the dose if given orally. Second, topical use avoids these hormones passing through the liver first before going through the body, which eliminates the high risk of blood clotting seen with oral estrogen use. Third, giving the supplement as a nightly vaginal cream restores the health and function of the vagina lost at menopause, which improves intimacy. Lastly, the veins that drain the vagina are the same ones that drain the

ovaries, meaning that over the six hours the hormones are absorbed from the vagina, the body receives the same bioidentical hormones the ovary would make in small doses, similar to what it would expect to receive from the same entry point nature intended.

My goal is to provide patients with as normal a hormonal background as possible, mimicking nature, to provide her with what she had before menopause.

The Importance of Staying Balanced I advocate using four bioidentical hormones in appropriately selected postmenopausal women whether they have had a hysterectomy or not. By appropriately selected, I mean healthy women within 10 years of menopause who have not had breast cancer or cardiovascular disease.

I evaluate every patient before I prescribe hormones to her to ensure I keep her safe and I monitor her regularly to ensure she stays that way.

It’s my opinion that nature intended women to have all these hormones rather than just one or two. My goal is to provide patients with as normal a hormonal background as possible, mimicking nature, to provide her with what she had before menopause.

This means including bioidentical estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, and DHEA, the four principal regulatory steroid hormones

Windy Hill has always felt like a safe place.

There are smiling faces everywhere you look. The equipment is clean and the spaces are well lit. The staff at KidTown are kind and well qualified. The trainers are knowledgeable. The general manager Karen Foley’s door is always open. It was important for me and my family to choose a place that made us feel valued. It was also important for us to feel welcome, at all stages of our fitness journey. The club continues to exceed our expectations.

I like to think that I spend just as much time using the amenities at the club as I do participating in the classes. We love the pool when it is warm outside. We are regulars at the café. My husband and I

So, You Have Been Told You Have A Cavity. What Does That Mean?

You just came from your dental appointment. We spoke to you in what seemed to be another language. You nodded your head as if you understood— but did you?

We said, “You have occlusal decay on tooth #30, a MO lesion on #29, and a buccal Class V on #21.”

Wait, what? OK. So, here is the decoding.

There are several types of decay. They are based on location in the mouth.

The occlusal surface is the biting, chewing surface of the tooth. This surface has the pits and fissures that require dentists to use “Get your Sonicare toothbrush and use it at least twice a day. uffering from low back pain? You’re not alone! It might begin as an ache after a round of golf or working in the yard. On the other hand, it can begin as a sudden, intense pain that can affect your function and alter your quality of life. Epidemiological statistics indicate that there is an 80% chance that you will experience significant low back pain at some point in your life. In the majority of cases, pain relief is accomplished by simple conservative measures such as physical therapy, activity modification, and oral medications.

When conservative therapy fails, there is still hope of avoiding surgery. Epidural steroid injections (ESI) can provide both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits and serve as an integral part of a comprehensive spinal-rehabilitation program.

What is an Epidural Steroid Injection?

An ESI is the administration of a long-lasting steroid solution into the epidural space (the area which surrounds the spinal cord and the spinal nerves). ESIs work by delivering steroid, the most potent anti-inflammatory in modern medicine, to the exact area of inflammation. Fluoroscopic or live X-ray guidance is used by interventionally-trained physicians to deliver the steroid to the precise location in the spine. By injecting directly into the spine, we can avoid many of the systemic adverse effects common to oral steroid medications. In addition to the obvious therapeutic benefits of ESIs, due to the precise nature of fluoroscopic guided injection, it frequently enables the physician to determine the exact pain-generator in the spine.

The History of Epidural Steroid Injections ESIs are not a new concept. The first documented ESI to treat low back pain was reported in 1901. The first ESI for the treatment of a lumbar disc herniation occurred in 1952. As medicine and technology advanced in the 1980s and 1990s, the addition of fluoroscopy became more commonplace. Now, this procedure is significantly more effective and most importantly, safer.

How Many Injections Will Be Needed?

The interval between and the number of injections given to a patient varies from individual to individual depending upon the

clinical response. However, it is not uncommon for the treating spine physician to administer up to three epidural injections per year. Clinical judgment and communication between the physician and the patient are what determines the appropriate number of injections and scheduling variations.

In Summary Epidural steroid injections play an integral role in the nonsurgical management of low back pain that is unresponsive to conservative management including rest, activity modification, physical therapy, and oral medications. They can serve both a therapeutic and diagnostic role in the nonsurgical management of low back pain.

Benefits of the treatment include decreasing back and sciatica (radicular) pain, improving quality of life, decreasing use of oral analgesics, improving return to work statistics and helping to avoid surgery in some patients.

Lesa Kagan Now Loves Her Legs

or Lesa Kagan, an audiologist and active mother of three (she takes care of her 95-year-old mom, volunteers with several organizations, and plays ALTA tennis)—loving her legs is a new thing.

“I have had problems with my legs since I was in my 20s. Varicose veins run in my family. We have a very strong history of it,” Kagan says of her diagnosis of Chronic Venous Insufficiency, or CVI. She adds, “I’d asked my dermatologist, my internist, and my OB-GYN about what to do about my varicose veins. None of them had any strong recommendations, or were that knowledgeable about them.”

About 30 million people in America suffer from CVI, yet many physicians don’t know to tell patients that varicose veins and spider veins are oftentimes much more than a cosmetic problem.

When one-way valves in leg veins fail, blood that is supposed to travel upward to be reoxygenated by the heart and lungs flows backward instead. This can cause the blood to pool, and create pressure in the legs, extending veins and causing a host of problems, including pain and swelling. These problems do not correct themselves; CVI is a progressive disease, which develops most often due to heredity, pregnancy, lifestyle (standing or sitting for long periods of time), or injury.

“It makes sense that I would have tired and achy legs. I am up and down a lot at work, but on my feet a good bit. When I was active, playing tennis, my legs would be sore and tired the next day. Also, flying and riding in a car for a long time was a problem. I always felt as though my legs needed to move. They ached. I just felt as though I needed to walk around more,” she says.

Treatments can be done in less than an hour with local anesthetic, and with little pain or downtime. Patients are encouraged to walk and resume normal activity immediately following procedures.

Kagan says, “Nothing is standing in my way now that I have had my legs done. My life is better. I would like to say my tennis game is way better!” she laughs. “I am definitely less tired. I have always been a runner on the court. Now, I am more energetic.

And I definitely feel better in my skirt, because my legs look better.”

Kagan’s symptoms were classic. With the calf muscle being the heartbeat of the lower body, CVI sufferers are often compelled to jump out of bed and walk around in the middle of the night, or need to get up during a flight and move around to relieve the pain and get the blood traveling in the right direction. Many patients

s we come to the end of another year, we look forward to the holidays, good food, and resolutions. We also buy gifts for ourselves and others, sometimes using that beloved credit card that we will pay off next year. All is good.

Unfortunately, “health debts” are not as easily reconciled. At the top of the list is balancing food and exercise. Let’s just think in terms of calories. A bagel and cream cheese for breakfast will provide 300 calories to start your day. If you chose to eat an egg and sausage biscuit, it would set you back 500 calories. That’s an extra 200 calories without any additional time commitment. In order to burn off those 200 calories, you will need to sweat for 20 to 30 minutes. Now repeat the calculation for all of the other dietary choices you make during the week. Balancing the budget can quickly become a challenge.

Now let’s talk sleep deficit. Sleep is not a luxury, it is a requirement. Although we often talk about “catching up” on our sleep over the weekend, the lost sleep creates a lot of other deficits along the way. Here are some examples: ¨ Increased cortisol levels leading to higher stress and weight gain ¨ Increased appetite ¨ Becoming accident prone ¨ Decreased cognitive ability ¨ Poor memory creation and recall To make matters worse, the more sleepdeprived we become, the less we recognize

Figure out why you want to change careers.

In 2020, nearly 20 percent of college and graduate students are expected to be over the age of 35, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. If you’re going to be one of that growing number, make sure you know the reasons behind your restlessness.

The most common reasons to go back: • Seeking a change in work-life balance • Re-entering the workforce after raising a family • A result of early retirement and the need to keep doing something • To open doors for advancement opportunities in a current field

when it comes to filling those positions. Start prepping now by seeking out professionals who are already in your field of interest and ask a lot of questions.

• How did they get to where they are?

• What kind of schooling did they go through?

• What is their current experience like?

• What is the average starting salary? How much can you make in their field?

Do a lot of research.

Based on the answers to those questions, find out where you can go to get the training, certifications or degree that is required for your potential new job. And even before you apply, look for ways to immerse yourself in that new field so that you can get hands-on exposure and a reality check on how committed you are to a career change.

• Check out The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the O*NET Resource Center to survey expected skills required for the job you want • Attend events or seminars to expand your knowledge • Get an internship that offers face time and hands-on experience with professionals in your new field

Make connections.

Networking not only provides a resource for asking questions, but it will help you meet the people you need to make connections with in hopes that they can assist you with landing a job later.

• To establish job security in a current position

• Get to know your teachers/instructors

• To do something different

• Meet and harbor relationships with pros already in the field

Amanda Young, director of admissions and student services at Belhaven University-Atlanta says, “The decision to change careers or go back to college has a lot to do with [individuals] being at a point in their life where they feel the freedom to pursue what truly interests them.”

But, buyer beware. Hone in on those reasons before you quit your current job, or pay for more schooling.

Whether it’s attending college and taking courses, a weekend-long certification, or any type of training program in between, you’ll have to develop the skills to become a competitive candidate for a new position. Consider the following: • Online schooling • Continuing education programs • Certification courses

Start asking questions.

According to “USA Today” and HuffingtonPost.com, in 2025, employers will need roughly 23 million more workers with degrees than the country’s colleges and universities are producing at their current rate.

Childhood Cancer Companions According to research and development think tank Sproutel, on average, childhood cancer treatments last over 1,000 days. Eager to alleviate the loneliness that accompanies children through that process, Sproutel partnered with Aflac to create the My Special Aflac Duck™.

Kids can feed, bathe, pet, and play with the smart companion. The interactive robot can even endure the same oftentimes painful procedures its owners have to go through. In September, the first batch of ducks was delivered to children at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. This winter, the ducks are expected to be available nationwide so that no child has to face cancer alone.

Coffee for a Good Cause

In honor of Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, staff and volunteers from Rebuilding Together Atlanta and Lowe’s will join over 100 handy helpers (you could be one!) and NFL players to repair homes in the Just Us community on Feb. 1. A resource fair will also provide these Westside residents with job opportunities and healthcare screenings.

Breast cancer survivor and former Best Self Atlanta cover girl (October/November 2017), Heidi Floyd and her husband Stuart Floyd are on a mission to bring hope and healing to breast cancer patients and foster families. The pair started Home Grounds in January 2018. Run entirely by volunteers, the coffee shop donates 100 percent of its proceeds to local breast cancer and foster family initiatives such as Adults Protecting Children, Inc. It also hosts breast cancer support meetings on the first and third Monday of every month along with church services every Sunday followed by a free family luncheon.
