{From The Founder} An Open Mind and an Open Heart I once read a sign in a little country store that said, “As we age, our waistlines get bigger and our minds get smaller.” For some reason, this hokey little comment stuck with me, probably because I have witnessed the truth of it. Keeping an open mind allows us to remain curious and open to new experiences, and to hear different perspectives. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant. It’s the process that’s important.

I have been thinking about the connection between an open mind and an open heart. I have

Since February is the month of celebrating love,

many friends who have given up on finding love. They have divorced or lost their partner in some way and tried online dating, dating apps, etc. After a short time, many have concluded their search is over and they’ll never find someone to love. But I believe finding love begins with an open mind. Keeping a curious spirit can lead us to engage in activities and meet people who may be different or who we don’t meet in our usual social circles. Whether it’s a cooking, exercise or jewelry-making class, we can learn, laugh and grow. And while we are loving ourselves, having fun and expanding our minds, we may find our hearts open up when we least expect it. Sherri Adair, Founder

{From The Editor} Looking Forward to the Future There’s no denying that the past few years have been difficult. But while it’s easy to be pessimistic in the face of things like the pandemic, divisive politics and climate change, I, for one, am looking forward to the future. Perhaps one of the best things about working in journalism, and especially at Best Self, is the opportunity it affords me to learn about the lovely people and places around me. When the world seems at its darkest, I am constantly reminded of the hope that lies in the goodness of people. The women we highlight in this month’s Black History Month article (p. 27) represent the best of human empathy and leadership I know we’re all capable of. Their efforts to make our world a better place inspire me to get up every morning and better myself and my community. Also, what’s a more hopeful cause than the pursuit of love? For those looking for love or just a connection, I encourage you to step out from behind your phone and into the real world. Check out some cool spots to do just that in our 10 Best Places to Meet Singles Over 40 article (p. 35). I promise you won’t regret getting out on that dance floor— metaphorically or literally. Optimistically, Wyndi Kappes Editor

Did you know radon poisoning is the second leading cause of lung cancer worldwide? An odorless, colorless gas, radon naturally occurs when uranium breaks down in rocky granite soils. As it is released into the soil, radon can enter homes through the foundation and well water, building to dangerous levels. Radon poisoning

kills more than 800 Georgians each year and is especially prevalent in northern Georgia counties. You

can test your home for radon by ordering a test kit ($15) from the University of Georgia Extension. Details: www.extension.uga.edu/programs-services/radon-testing.html bestselfatlanta.com

7 ATL Influencers Share Their Favorite Booze-Free Beverages for the New Year Crafted nonalcoholic cocktails, aka mocktails, are all the rage. As people reset for the new year and bring their resolutions into focus, one of the common goals is often to drink less. But if you still crave something special, mocktails can be a tasty option for cutting back without cutting out the fun. Here, seven Atlanta influencers share their favorite mocktails, the local spots where you can grab one and a few recipes for enjoying these trendy beverages at home.

1 Sweater Weather Mocktail In the Curious Kitchen

“Enjoy the flavors of winter with my favorite cold-weather mocktail, Sweater Weather. I love the enticing combination of apples, oranges and warm spices almost as much as I love my favorite pink wool sweater from J. Crew. 2 Hibiscus Ginger Tea O-Ku Atlanta

“O-Ku Atlanta [www.o-kusushi.com] has plenty of alcohol-free options for when I’m on a health kick. A menu highlight is the Hibiscus Ginger Tea. It tastes just like a cocktail and is so refreshing. I love sipping on it while enjoying one of their many specialty sushi rolls.” —Allie Eaton, @atlpeachyeats, www.atlpeachyeats.com

“We love to pair blood orange with rosemary because the citrus provides brightness to counter the deeper flavor of the rosemary. The bubbles offer light effervescence, which is especially great before or after a big meal. Finally, the smoked rosemary fills the room with a wonderful scent. You can’t beat it. Also, they change seasonally, which is great because it keeps things fresh and new. We also love the fact that everything that comes from Biltong Bar is something we can’t make at home.” —Adam McCabe and Cole Robbins, @atlfoodiestiktok

Forza Storico

“I love Forza Storico’s [www.forzastorico.com] zero-proof cocktails, especially the Coconut Limeade. Cool, smooth and delicious, it pairs perfectly with their Fritto Misto di Mare, a savory seafood appetizer with calamari, shrimp and orata. Santa Monica Sparkling Lemonade ChellBee

“Some of my favorite recipes are inspired by my trips across the country. This Sparkling Lemonade mocktail is inspired by a recent trip to Santa Monica and embodies that light and fun feel you’ll find along the boardwalk or bouncing around the city. This mocktail is a crowd-pleaser that works for a girl’s night in, baby shower and more. Find the full recipe on my website.” —Chellbee Johnson, @iamchellbee, www.chellbee.com bestselfatlanta.com

“With the growing sober curious movement and a reported 23 million Americans being in abstinence-based recovery, chances are you’ll likely have party guests who’d rather opt for a nonalcoholic option,” says Heather Hayes, a licensed counselor and boardregistered interventionist with more than 35 years of experience treating clients with an addictive disorder. “It’s important to keep in mind that there are many reasons why a person may decide to stop drinking, whether it be for health reasons, to save money or to simply stave off a hangover,” says Hayes. There may be larger, more serious issues at hand as well. If you or someone you know is looking for help to stop drinking, you can reach out to Heather, the founder and CEO of Heather R. A Regenerative Retreat Get inspired with these unique ideas for a restful and restorative respite on Amelia Island. By Jill Becker

There’s no denying that when you’re stressed, tired or overworked, taking a trip to the beach is one of the most relaxing things you can do. But if you really want to soothe your psyche and feed your soul, you’ll probably want to do more than just lay out on the beach soaking up the sun all day. Here, we share a therapeutic escape to charming Amelia Island, Florida, located just north of Jacksonville, about 5½ hours from Atlanta. Designed to revive, restore and rejuvenate you from head-to-toe, the tailored list of activities below might just change how you vacation.

The regal Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island offers personalized half- and full-day Wellness Retreats, which include a 2½-hour guided Nidra yoga meditation. Just a quick 45-minute session in this ancient art of transforming your state of mind to where the body is still enough to sleep but the mind is still conscious is said to be the equivalent of getting three hours of deep sleep. Another unique offering is the hotel spa’s honey butter wrap, made with honey from the resort’s own beehives. Or opt for the Heaven in a Hammock treatment, during which you’ll be massaged as you relax in a handwoven hammock on the beach. The treatment gives you the combined benefits of zero gravity and touch therapy, while the gentle swaying motion of the hammock is supposed to duplicate the movements of the tides. The resort also offers some exclusive experiences, including private charter boat excursions, during which a chef will prepare a healthy four-course meal using the fish you caught on the trip.

Get Fit Getting in a little exercise is another excellent way to get your juices flowing again. A stay at the Omni Amelia Island Resort qualifies you for a complimentary in-room Get Fit Kit, which includes stretch bands, a mat, 3-pound dumbbells and 5-pound kettle balls. The luxe property also features two fitness centers and has a variety of recreational activities, from spin classes to a heated indoor lap pool.

Get Outdoors Time spent in nature is always time well spent. One way to get out and explore the scenery is by bike. Rentals are available from various outfitters, but if you want a little help with the pedaling from time to time, renting an electric bike from Pedego is the way to go. They offer guided tours of the island but will also direct you if you want to explore on your own. One option would be to check out the local section of the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile-long route that stretches from Florida to Maine. On the island’s northern tip is Fort Clinch State Park, which includes six miles of biking trails under its shady tree canopy. Ever fantasized about saddling up and riding a horse along the beach like you see in the movies? The Kelly Seahorse Ranch is one of few places in the country where you can still do just that. Under the watchful eye of the ranch guides, your trusty steed will ferry you through a forested trail to the beach, where you’ll saunter among the sand and surf.

FORT CLINCH STATE PARK BIKING TRAILS

Trying something new is a great way to challenge yourself and get out of a rut, so why not give pétanque a go. Similar to bocce, this lawn game originated in France back in the early 1900s. There are two sets of pétanque courts in Fernandina Beach, one located downtown by the riverfront and the other at Central Park. Or maybe you want to try your hand at riding a contraption called a hydro bike. Through Amelia River Cycle, you can rent one of these fun water cycles and explore the various marine life along the Amelia River.

Get Artistic To awaken your creative juices, try browsing the island’s numerous art galleries. Better yet, get hands-on by joining one of the Julie Delfs Gallery’s epoxy-resin art classes, and walk away with your own coastal-themed creation you can hang on your wall as a lasting reminder of your trip. Lip Flips and Lip Lifts What is a lip flip? A lip flip is a procedure in which a neurotoxin, such as Botox™, is injected into the muscle around the top lip in order to allow the upper lip to evert and have more of the red part of the lip show. This is often supplemented with filler to add more volume to the lips.

What is a lip lift? A lip lift is a surgical procedure where skin is excised to decrease the distance between the nasal base and the upper lip and turn the corners of the mouth up. This gives the lips a permanent fuller, more youthful appearance. The scar sits completely camouflaged under the nose. This procedure can be done in-office under local anesthesia or combined with other procedures.

BeautiFill™ Fat Transfer & Liposuction System What is BeautiFill? BeautiFill is an FDA-approved device that combines gentle laser liposuction and the processing of fat cells for fat transfer to another area, all in one step.

What makes BeautiFill a game-changing treatment? Until now, fat transfer procedures involved higher risk, more trauma and unreliable results. While some patients had positive outcomes, many were left unsatisfied. Before BeautiFill, many fat cells were damaged during the removal process, which yielded unpredictable results of being overfilled, underfilled or uneven.

What results can patients expect? Thanks to this groundbreaking technology, the removed fat is more uniform, undamaged and the cells have a much higher survival rate. The days of overfilling and unpredictable results are a thing of the past! Recovery is easier with less pain and fewer side effects.

Dr. Alan Larsen Buckhead Plastic Surgery Dr. Larsen is a double board-certified plastic surgeon. He has consistently provided excellent service for his patients throughout his impeccable career. Dr. Larsen and his team pride themselves on staying on the cutting edge of technology to provide their patients with the best services available on the market today. Opus Plasma® What is the Opus Plasma Treatment? Opus Plasma is an innovative, first-of-its-kind fractional plasma skin resurfacing treatment. Plasma is created by combining radio frequency and atmospheric pressure, resulting in tiny micro-injuries, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. The body’s natural healing process repairs the controlled micro-injuries; the result is the formation of new collagen and elastin, resulting in a tighter, brighter, more youthful appearance. Unlike a laser that uses light energy, Opus Plasma uses electrical plasma energy that does not target a specific chromophore, making this procedure ideal for treating a variety of challenges in the skin on both lighter and darker skin types.

How long does the treatment take?

LifeHope Healing Med Spa LifeHope Healing Med Spa has been voted Best of Atlanta for Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation, Best of Alpharetta for Nonsurgical Body Contouring and Best of Georgia for Aesthetics. LifeHope provides an array of options to address our patients’ personal concerns, including HydraFacial MD, laser hair and tattoo removal, body sculpting with CoolSculpting Elite and Accent Prime (ultrasound and radio frequency), laser liposuction, fat transfer, vaginal rejuvenation, photo rejuvenation (IPL), cosmetic injectables, Botox, PDO Thread Lifts, and Opus Plasma. The team looks forward to being a part of your self-care journey.

018-025_Modern Beauty.indd 22

To ensure your comfort during treatment, your provider will apply a topical numbing ointment which will have to sit on the skin for 30 to 45 minutes prior to the procedure. The treatment itself takes approximately 30 minutes.

What can I expect after treatment? Immediately following treatment, a patient might feel like they have a slight sunburn. Within 24 to 48 hours, they may experience slight swelling (patient may notice while others may not). However, patients are able to apply makeup at this point in time. On days 4 and 5, the skin appears brighter and healthier. Downtime associated with Opus Plasm by Alma Lasers is minimal, and results are experienced following the first treatment with optimum results following a series of 3 to 4 treatments, depending on a patient’s goals and initial skin condition. Opus Plasma offers the flexibility to achieve the glowing results of a gentle laser peel or an aggressive CO2 laser with minimal downtime! -Submitted by Kim Buchanan Opus Expert; Surgical Tech

What is Vaser Liposuction and Renuvion? Vaser Liposuction uses ultrasound technology to help loosen the fat in a process called cavitation. This method smoothly removes fat and enables better control of fat removal. It also allows me to perform high-definition liposuction, where I can remove the fat from around the muscles, thereby accenting your abdominal muscles. Renuvion is plasma technology that helps tighten the skin. The plasma heats the tissues under the skin, allowing them to contract. It basically shrinks the skin to your body. This is an absolute game-changer in the field of cosmetics and works well for post-pregnancy skin.

What kind of results can I expect? Vaser Liposuction allows for a smoother contour and is a good fit for patients who have had previous liposuction. With Renuvion, skin tightening is a process that takes about six months to see final results. However, you can see immediate results in most cases.

Who is the best candidate for these procedures? Vaser Liposuction is for everyone. Highdefinition liposuction is for patients who have good musculature but just need to remove some fat to reveal these muscles. Although excessive loose skin usually needs to be cut; for those with mild to moderate loose skin, Renuvion can work wonders.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) What is PRP? PRP, which is short for platelet-rich plasma, treatment is a simple procedure performed in the office in about an hour or so. The healing components of your blood are used to stimulate hair growth. By drawing your own blood and separating the components, we are able to isolate the platelet-rich plasma portion of your blood where growth factors and other naturally healing components are located. We take this platelet-rich plasma portion and inject it into your scalp in the areas where you are experiencing thinning or hair loss to stimulate the follicles in that area. “It is like sending your follicles to the gym for a workout,” Dr. Anderson explains.

Is the procedure safe, and how long do the results last?

Dr. Ken Anderson Dr. Daniel Lee

Anderson Center for Hair Ken Anderson, MD, FISHRS, is a double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon who has specialized exclusively in hair restoration for nearly 20 years, dedicating his career to helping men and women suffering from hair loss. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for seven years in a row and has been recognized as one of the top 25 hair restoration surgeons in the world for three years in a row by Spex Hair. After treating patients from all over the U.S. and 38 other countries, Dr. Anderson finds the best part of his work is when patients return overjoyed at how their hair restoration has transformed their lives for the better. Daniel Lee, MD, FACS, is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, and a tenured surgeon at Anderson Center for Hair. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Lee has a knack for both the art and science of natural hair restoration. His outstanding reputation for compassionate care, genuine concern for his patient’s well-being and attention to detail serves him well when consulting with and treating patients.

While there is always a very small risk anytime you have an injection or the skin is broken, the risks are very low because it is your own plasma that we are utilizing so it is a very natural, holistic treatment option. Both men and women can benefit from PRP treatments whether you are hoping to avoid or delay a surgical restoration or have had a surgical restoration and maintenance is your goal. Hair loss is an ongoing issue that can never be cured, and it does require ongoing treatments to maintain the appearance of your hair. A favorite comparison is to that of dental decay – you will always have to brush your teeth, floss and have regular cleanings to maintain the health of your teeth. Hair is the same. While PRP treatments are effective; they do not provide indefinite change which is why we recommend creating a custom treatment plan with one of our surgeons to reach your specific goals.

How much can I expect to pay? The price for a single PRP treatment is generally $600-$800. Because a single treatment will not create the best results for you, we recommend a package of six, which we offer for $2499. This saves you some money and, depending on the frequency you and your surgeon decide is best, could provide you with a full year of treatments. BEFORE

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY

10

Inspiring Black Women Making History in Atlanta

By Michael Jacobs and Wyndi Kappes

Black women in metro Atlanta are constantly making headlines, from entertainment industry leaders such as Tyler Perry Studios’ new president of original programming, Angi Bones, to star performers such as Cardi B. However, Black women are making history every day, often behind the scenes, by working to make Atlanta a better place to live, and applying creativity and entrepreneurship to various problems they’ve experienced. Although they deserve to be celebrated year-round, we would like to spotlight just a few of these amazing women in honor of Black History Month.

Renee Montgomery

Changing the game on and off the court Basketball star Renee Montgomery won championships in high school, college and the WNBA. Now she’s scoring points with positive change off the court.

After an 11-year pro career, Montgomery walked away from her position as point guard for Atlanta’s professional women’s basketball team, the Atlanta Dream, in 2020 to focus on social justice through her namesake foundation. Since then, she has worked to push important initiatives forward, like increasing voter registration and education funding at HBCUs. In 2021, she made history by becoming the first former player to be both an owner and executive of a WNBA franchise. But Montgomery hasn’t stopped there. She also uses her skills to host a podcast called Montgomery & Co. and works as a TV and virtual-reality basketball analyst. How to support Montgomery’s mission: Volunteer, donate, buy “Moments Equal Momentum” gear at www.reneemontgomeryfoundation.org, or participate in programs such as the fundraising Renee Montgomery Invitational girls’ basketball tournament in April. bestselfatlanta.com

Dr. Jackie Walters Women’s wellness warrior You may know her from her role in Bravo’s “Married to Medicine,” but Dr. Jackie Walters is making waves as so much more than a reality TV star. Not only does the award-winning OB-GYN run her own women’s healthcare clinic and a medical spa in Duluth, she has also developed her own skincare serum and authored a book dispelling myths around women’s sexual health and intimacy titled “The Queen V: Everything You Need to Know About Sex, Intimacy, and Down There Health Care" A two-time breast cancer survivor, Walters is passionate about caring for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer. “Any physician will tell you that a positive attitude truly has an impact on how well you respond to treatment,” says Walters. “I knew that if I looked good, I would feel good, and if I felt good, my treatment would go good. I started the 50 Shades of Pink Foundation to support a patient's psychological needs during and after breast cancer treatment so they can hopefully see the best outcomes possible.” Since its inception in 2013, the nonprofit has empowered thousands of breast cancer patients and survivors through care packages, fashion shows and donations for physical and mental healthcare. Beatrice Dixon Shaking up the wellness industry Neglected by the wellness industry that provided no solution for her bacterial vaginosis, Dixon launched The Honey Pot Co. in 2014 to make gender, body and age-inclusive feminine products free of chemicals, parabens, carcinogens and sulfates. She has since become one of the first 40 women of color to raise over $1 million in venture capital and has committed to supporting humans worldwide with the tools and resources that promote health. With the catchphrase “by humans with vaginas, for humans with vaginas,” she aims to undercut embarrassment and ignorance about women’s health. How to champion Dixon’s wellness ideals for all: Share the educational blog posts and buy items at www.thehoneypot.co, where 2% of your purchase benefits The Honey Pot’s social initiative CAKE (connection, access, kindness and education), which serves vulnerable populations worldwide.

Jaycina Almond Jaycina Almond was an aspiring model when she became a single mom at age 21. Even with access to plentiful resources and a promising start to her modeling career, she quickly found life as a solo parent overwhelming. Now, as her daughter Syx approaches her fifth birthday, Almond enjoys a thriving modeling career in Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles, and has taken it upon herself to provide a safety net and support for other single moms in Atlanta. Recognizing their special needs, Almond launched and leads The Tender Foundation, which since January 2020 has provided more than $200,000 in emergency aid and grocery gift cards and has distributed hundreds of diapers, wipes and formula to single Atlanta moms living on the margins. How to help Almond give back to moms in need: Besides raising awareness of single moms’ needs and giving money, you can drop off or schedule pickups of donations of baby essentials through www.thetenderfoundation.com.

Her desire to make the world more just and equitable in line with Jewish values has also led her to participate in the Atlanta Black-Jewish Coalition, Jewish Family & Career Services, Bend the Arc and her synagogue’s inclusion work, among other nonprofits. How to back Raggs in her efforts for equity and unity: Donate; attend events listed at www.ajocc.org, such as a celebration of the Ethiopian holiday Sigd; share AJOCC’s work; and educate yourself about systemic oppression.

Katie Kern Katie Kern makes a living as a storyteller and as a partner and the chief operating officer of the technical PR and marketing agency Media Frenzy Global. But she does more than apply her creative and strategic talents for corporate clients. In 2020, she helped launch The A Pledge (www.theapledge.com), where she’s now co-chair. The nonprofit calls on advertising and marketing agencies to commit to inclusion, with the goal of seeing agencies reflect Atlanta’s diversity by 2030. How to connect with Kern to make a change: Mobilize within organizations for diversity, equity and inclusion and share your stories, because as Kern says, a better understanding of one another produces empathy and meaningful change.

10 Great Places to Meet Singles Over 40 in Atlanta by Laurel-Ann Dooley Thanks to the pandemic, we’ve been staring at our screens for months on end—Zooming, FaceTiming, texting and binge-watching our favorite shows. But, honestly, all that screen time can be tiring. And while online communication does serve to keep us connected, it can’t replace face-to-face interactions. With necessary COVID precautions now understood, re-entering the world is a welcome possibility. The one question that remains is where to go and with whom. If you’re single and ready to mingle, this question can be daunting, and it gets even trickier when you’re of a certain age. So to give those of you who are single and over 40 a kick start, we’ve come up with a list of 10 local spots to check out when you’re ready to get back in the love game. Here’s to reaching out and meeting up in 2022!

1

Le Bon Nosh For the fun-loving foodie

It’s a cafe, a market, a coffee shop and a wine bar. What more can you say—Le Bon Nosh has it all! The Buckhead newcomer opened its doors in The Irby building in November and already seems to be fulfilling the vision of its chef-founder, Forough Vakili, to be a community gathering place. It’s easy to strike up a conversation as you peruse the food selection, take a seat at the jewel box of a bar or sip a cappuccino at one of the long tables inside. Bring along your laptop and check it out. Details: 65 Irby Ave. NW., Ste. 103, Atlanta. www.lebonnosh.com

Virginia Highland Books

For the avid reader

Virginia Highland Books is the latest addition to Atlanta’s literary scene and a place for introverted singles to feel at home. The cozy storefront is located in the middle of the shops and restaurants of the popular in-town neighborhood, and a steady flow of book lovers wander through two stories of tomes, especially on weekend afternoons. You can also meet fellow readers at one of its many author events or book club meetups. Details: 1034 North Highland Ave. NE., Atlanta. www.vahibooks.com bestselfatlanta.com

The Select For the epicurean extrovert

If creative cocktails, a made-from-scratch menu and late-night dancing are more your style, The Select in Sandy Springs is for you. Offering daily happy hours, live music in the evenings and a DJ for dancing on weekends, The Select has become particularly known for its Thursday Ladies’ Nights, when The Atlanta Rat Pack performs song classics from the original trio. Eclipse di Luna For the salsa-dancing single

This Miami Circle favorite has long established itself as a top spot for tapas, salsa dancing and a convivial atmosphere conducive to mingling. From his vantage point on the stage, musician Juan Bonini takes it all in as a member of Eclipse di Luna’s regular C.O.T. Band. “It’s a very friendly place,” he says. “Everyone is so up to the task of meeting people.” You can even stay sitting down in your own space and still be included. “I’ve seen people come up to the tables,” says Bonini, “and I’ve never ever seen anyone turn down someone who says, ‘Hey, hello!’” Details: 764 Miami Circle NE., Atlanta. www.buckheadeclipsediluna.com

Traditional social settings aren’t the only venues for meeting new people. Volunteering for a cause you believe in presents a different way to connect, with the added benefit of built-in icebreakers. One organization to consider is Habitat for Humanity. The nonprofit brings together groups of 25 volunteers to help families build and repair homes. Atlanta Habitat’s chief development officer Rosalyn Merrick describes the projects as very collaborative. “Volunteers of all skill levels work and learn together,” she says. “Everyone is in the spirit of giving back to not only a family, but to their community.” Participants must be at least 16 years old, with the upper age being limitless. “Our oldest volunteer was 92,” says Merrick. Animal Shelters & Rescues For fur-baby fans

For animal lovers, shelters and rescues also offer numerous opportunities for adult volunteers of all ages. Two of them, Fulton and Dekalb County Shelters, run by LifeLine Animal Project, always welcome help in caring for the hundreds of animals in their shelters. By walking dogs and cuddling cats, you alleviate the stress of shelter life while helping homeless animals find their forever families. A resident named Laura Lawrence even met her husband while volunteering with the Adopt a Golden Atlanta rescue. “It was a pretty cool and unexpected way to meet my soulmate,” she says. Brookhaven Dog Park

A surefire way to connect with people sharing similar interests is through meetup groups. There are meetups for every imaginable interest, from wine tasting to kayaking, travel and more. For a meetup that covers all the bases, try Celebrate Atlanta. This wildly popular group is the most active in the country, a success that organizer Dave Groveman attributes to its wide variety of events, discounted tickets and easygoing atmosphere. “Our events are conducive to meeting people in a relaxed setting,” he said. “We have had thousands of friendships, thousands of relationships, and many, many marriages.” Details: www.meetup.com/celebrate-atlanta

For dog moms and dads

In a similar vein, dog parks bring people together, and Brookhaven Dog Park is Atlanta’s largest, complete with its own nonprofit organized to bring dog lovers together in a well-tended setting. Spread over 20 plus acres, the park presents an easy way to meet others with a variety of planned events like movie nights, potluck dinners and pet costume contests. Details: 4158 Peachtree Rd. What causes knee pain, and how do I know when it’s time to see a doctor?

What causes age spots and how can I get rid of them?

Can HRT help with hair loss?

Knee pain is very common and can have different causes. Whether young or mature, you will likely come across knee pain at some point in time. When a young person experiences knee pain, it’s usually a result of an injury. Knee pain endured by older adults and the elderly may be due to wear and tear or arthritis.

As we age, genetics and sun exposure catch up with us all, leaving what are commonly referred to as sun spots or age spots. These usually darker tan, brown or black spots, of varying sizes, most commonly appear on the face, hands, shoulders, upper back and arms. The fact is the sun’s rays reduce our skin’s natural ability to repair itself. As it tries to repair the damaged areas, a pigment called melanin is secreted to help the body protect your skin from further damage, thus creating these spots. We have multiple treatments available for the treatment of age spots, and truly love to cater the specific treatment for each patient. These treatments include chemical peels of varying strengths and laser treatments, such as the IPL photofacial and VBeam pulse dye laser. Above all else, medicalgrade skincare and sunscreen help tremendously long-term.

Knee pain that doesn’t get better warrants a visit to an orthopedic doctor. Orthopedic doctors have the specialized knowledge and training needed to treat various problems affecting the musculoskeletal system. Pain is your body’s way of alerting you that something is wrong. During the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship, the University of Georgia took on the University of Alabama, and we saw many sports injuries, including a devastating knee injury to star wide receiver, Jameson Williams. Whether you’re playing on the big screen or in your backyard, if you experience a knee or sports injury, call Dr. Nicholson to get back on the field sooner rather than later. Yes. Hormonal therapy can help prevent hair loss if your hair loss is related to a hormone deficit. For women, estrogen and progesterone can help keep your hair in the growth phase, allowing your hair to stay on your head longer and grow faster. If you notice thinning, it could be because of a decline in these hormones during menopause or after. When you add estrogen and progesterone during hormone replacement therapy, you can see a nice restoration in the balance of these hormones and impressive results. Many women see a halt in hair loss and some even see an increase in hair growth.

It’s Good for Women, So Why Not for Men? Women have enhanced their breasts, lips, buttocks and more for years... Finally men can benefit from the same advancements in aesthetic medicine to enhance their bodies for greater confidence and sexual satisfaction.

W

omen have enhanced their breasts, lips, buttocks and more for years. Finally, men can benefit from the same advancements in aesthetic medicine to enhance their bodies for greater confidence and sexual satisfaction.

“Confidence is the key to success,” says Dr. Malik, and with his groundbreaking new Prometheus procedure, men can go, to put it in terms they’ll relate to, “from a Cadillac to a Ferrari.” As the only practitioner in the Southeast performing the Prometheus procedure,

“When men are more sexually confident, it carries over into their lives in other ways.” The taboo is through. That’s the growing feeling among plastic surgeons and other practitioners who are seeing huge increases in the number of male patients getting aesthetic treatments. “Breast augmentation for women has been around since the ’50s,” says Dr. Fahran Malik, medical director at Atlanta Innovative Medicine, noting how the procedure is so commonplace these days that no one bats an eye. While men getting penile enhancement isn’t at that stage yet, it is becoming increasingly more acceptable. A double board-certified specialist in nonsurgical cosmetic penile enlargement, Dr. Malik reports that while still only a fraction of the men who have concerns about the size of their penis act on it, their business has gone up due, in part, he says, to social pressure.

Dr. Malik is uniquely qualified to administer the exclusive technique, which involves millimeter injections into the penis of FDA-approved proprietary agents, similar to that of fillers like Sculptra. The agents are then absorbed by the penis, and after about a month, it turns into collagen, which is what creates the additional girth. The whole visit only takes about two hours, and patients can lie comfortably watching Netflix throughout. “After a breast augmentation, women feel more feminine, while after penile enlargement, men feel more masculine and virile,” says Dr. Malik. “And when they’re more sexually confident, it carries over into their lives in other ways.”

2022 Partners in Health Treat Back Pain for a New You in 2022

Looking for a new you in 2022, but back pain is getting in the way? While low back pain is one of the top diagnoses treated each year in the United States, there are a few changes you can make in your lifestyle so you can be your best self in the new year! • Exercise – Exercise improves your health in many ways, including the health of your spine. One cause of back pain is weakness in the “core” muscles that support the spine. These muscles are small and not as strong as the larger muscles, which is why they are so prone to injuries. Strengthening these muscles can help prevent back injuries. Sit-ups, crunches and pushups can help improve your core strength. Other options include stretching and yoga. Not only will these activities strengthen your core muscles, but they will also improve your flexibility, helping you be less susceptible to injuries. As with any exercise regimen, check with your physician or spine specialist before you begin to ensure the exercises are safe for you. • Healthy Body Weight – Staying fit is crucial to all aspects of your health, including the health of your spine. When you’re carrying extra weight, especially around the torso, those small

muscles around your spine have to work harder just to keep you upright. While our weight is something many of us struggle with, if you can maintain your ideal weight, you can decrease your risk for back pain. • Proper Lifting Technique – Using proper lifting technique can help decrease back pain. Use the big, powerful muscles in your legs to lift, not the small muscles in your back. When you need to lift something, squat down until your hips are parallel to the object’s center of gravity. By doing so, you will force your leg muscles to do most of the work, allowing you to keep your back straight as you lift. • Stay Hydrated – Drinking plenty of water will help prevent back pain by maintaining the size of the fluid-filled discs between your vertebrae. These discs are responsible for absorbing much of the shock your spine experiences during the day. If you are not properly hydrated, the discs can become smaller and offer less support to your spine. Overtime this can lead to back pain. We hope these tips help you start 2022 off with a healthier spine. If you have back pain that keeps you from doing what you love, the physicians at Resurgens Spine Center are here to serve you in one of our 24 area locations.

2022 Partners in Health Your Dream Solution to Better Men’s Health By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA

In our busy world, most men underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep. The three pillars of great health are a nutritious diet, consistent exercise and regular sleep.

Exercise—Modest but consistent exercise will lead to a better night’s sleep. However, exercise should be avoided in the few hours leading up to bedtime.

First and foremost, a lack of sleep makes us more accident-prone. For Weight control and other dietary concerns—Reducing your instance, inadequate sleep can impair our ability to drive the same way sugar and carbohydrate intake can decrease excess belly fat that is drinking too much alcohol does. We also become more susceptible to falls often associated with the most common sleep disorder, sleep apnea. and sports injuries. Sleep deprivation can also Minimizing consumption of alcohol and Sleep Gives Men What They Want caffeine will also lead to a better lead to a whole host of easy-to-ignore medical conditions such as weight gain, cardiovascular night’s sleep. • Mental resilience risk, mood alteration and a weakened immune • Improved heart and brain function Apps, wearables, and other devices—Apps system. When we sleep, the mind and body recharge themselves. For example, during this downtime, • Weight control • Enhanced intimacy our body is hard at work repairing the damage that our cells endure throughout the day. Of course, without adequate sleep, our brains can’t function properly. We tend to sleep in cycles. Interruption of a sleep cycle often will lead to a feeling of tiredness. As such, even losing one hour of sleep can lead to significant sleep deprivation. So, how much sleep do we need? Seven hours per night is usually the minimum requirement for adult men. For those who require more sleep, typical indicators include difficulty waking up in the morning and feeling tired during the day. Here are some tips for having a good night’s sleep: The right environment—The ideal sleep environment is cold, dark and quiet. The bedroom should also be a dedicated space for sleep and intimacy. Work, hobbies, watching TV or browsing a computer screen can disturb your natural wind-down process. Ritual—Having a consistent bedtime routine and time will reinforce our internal clocks. Bedtime rituals can include a cup of herbal tea, a warm bath or some light reading. Avoid electronic devices, TV, caffeine, alcohol and eating during the last couple of hours of the day.

A notepad by the bedside—Sometimes just writing your thoughts down takes them off your mind. If the preceding recommendations aren’t successful, seeking medical advice is the next best step. Your physician can evaluate you for a possible sleeping disorder and treat any associated medical conditions. Look for my article “Spring Forward or Fall Back,” which discusses injury prevention, in the next issue. Scott D. Hormones and Hot Flashes By Jennifer Colosimo

As we continue our conversation about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), a common question often arises: If I don’t have hot flashes, does that mean I don’t need hormones? The short answer is, there’s not a short answer. Hormones exist in men and women uniquely, and they disappear in the same way. Hot flashes are a good sign that it’s time to start, but Vital Living Healthcare’s Dr. Paul Cox is here to help us understand the big picture about when it’s the right time to seek hormone replacement therapy. If I’m not having hot flashes, what other symptoms could I be having that would determine it’s time to start hormone replacement therapy? Hot flashes are one sign and symptom of depleted hormones, but men and women can also experience night sweats, brain fog, irritability, forgetfulness, weight gain, low energy and poor sleep. Any of these symptoms could be a sign that it’s time to seek medical advice. How does hormone replacement therapy help with any of these symptoms? This time the answer is simple: When we restore hormones to our body and our brain, we can alleviate the symptoms caused by that hormone deficiency. That includes brain fog, anxiety, a poor mood and anything on the aforementioned list, really. They will be tremendously minimized, if not gone. I don’t have any of these menopause symptoms right now, but can hormone replacement therapy delay their onset? No. But this is kind of a trick question because you either still have hormones or you don’t. If you don’t have those symptoms, you probably still have hormones. So, in reality, it’s not about delaying the symptoms, but paying attention to when they start. And the good news is that you don’t need to think about hormone therapy until you’re experiencing these symptoms regularly.

Are there any adverse side effects to starting hormone replacement therapy? In general, no, but it depends on the type of hormone replacement therapy you undergo. Hormone replacement therapy based on a horse estrogen, like Premarin, has been shown to increase your risk for breast cancer, stroke and other adverse events. Hormones that are native to the human body, like those we work with, have been shown to be safe and effective when administered correctly. Of course, that means seeking the guidance of a medical professional who is trained specifically in hormone replacement therapy. Who is a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy? Men or women who are experiencing signs and symptoms of hormone deficiency are good candidates. Most people don’t have hormone deficiencies normally until their 40s and 50s, but studies show that the earlier you start hormone replacement therapy, the better the results. Board-certified in anti-aging and family medicine, Paul E. Cox, M.D., MS, is an expert at turning back time. Firmly rooted in a scientific approach, Vital Living Healthcare focuses on early detection, prevention and innovative treatments to reverse age-related decline.
