By Neal McSpadden Have you ever wanted to be a surfer with your feet in the water and the wind in your hair? Do you find it difficult to make this dream a reality when you live in a land-locked city like Atlanta?

SUP is taking the country by storm as the new way to have fun on the water and get a great whole body workout at the same time. Paddle boarders use an oar while standing on a large surf board, and the full body workout comes from the paddling. Best of all, you get to be in the water and have fun in the sun.

I met Bubba, a nationally ranked SUPer, and another SUP expert, Caroline from High Country at the dock below Morgan Falls Overlook Park in Sandy Springs for my first lesson. Here, they taught me how to SUP in about five minutes. Next it was my turn to take the board out into the water and start SUPing on the Hooch. After paddling out from the dock, I stood up and started paddling. I’ll spare you the suspense: I fell in the water. It turned out that my feet were askew on the board, so I got back on the board and tried again.

My hair is very dry and brittle. Is there a medical reason and what can I do about it?

There can be a medical reason for dry, brittle hair. One of the main reasons for dry hair can be changing hormones, especially at the time of menopause. When hormones begin dropping in the perimenopause (usually in the late 40s) the quality of a woman’s hair can begin to change.

Another medical reason for dry, brittle hair is an underactive thyroid. Thyroid disease is very common in women and can develop at any age. If the medical work-up is negative for any specific diseases, then some recommendations for treatments can include vitamin E, Biotin and a B-complex vitamin.

However, nothing is as good as a nutritious diet.

Why do I see white, scaly patches on my elbows and knees?

This sounds like psoriasis which is a disorder of the immune system. It’s a non-contagious skin condition that may respond to various treatments, including a new class of systemic drugs referred to as biologics. Plaque psoriasis is the most prevalent form of the disease. About 80 percent of those who have psoriasis have this type. It’s characterized by raised, inflamed, red lesions covered by a silvery white scale and is typically found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. The tendency toward developing psoriasis is inherited. Psoriasis gets better and worse spontaneously and can have periodic remissions (clear skin), however, it is controllable with medication.

What should I do if I experience palpitations or “heart flutter”?

Although palpitations are often caused by factors as simple as excess caffeine or stress, it can be an indicator of serious underlying problems such as anemia, thyroid disorders, heart problems and many others. Whether you’re new to Atlanta or you’ve called this city home for decades, chances are you’ve heard about the Peachtree Road Race. The annual event attracts runners and walkers alike, and this year will mark the 43rd year of the Atlanta tradition. With the countdown to the race officially on, Atlantans are busy gearing up for this 6.2mile trek down Peachtree Street. In preparation for the big day, we’ve got your complete guide to the best shoes, running gear, training practices and more.

Preparing for a 10K may sound a bit daunting, especially if it’s your first race. But according to Tracey Russell, executive director of the Atlanta Track Club, training doesn’t have to be a chore.

She encourages participants of the Peachtree Road Race (or anyone who wants to improve their 10K finish time) to try the In-Training for Peachtree 10K training program presented by Publix. The 11-week program is designed for novice and intermediate runners to train, and features Saturday group runs based out of 12 Publix locations throughout the metro area.

Weekly Mileage: 17 to 22.5 miles “If you don’t really run, pace yourself,” he says. “Gauge your intensity by monitoring your heart rate while running in your peak zone and your lower zone. Start running before the race to find out what is a comfortable pace for you and stay within it.”

At what point can you improve your time? Are you lagging off in the third mile? Can you save some energy by going slower in the beginning and speeding up at the end?”

“This is the time for sprint work,” he says. “The biggest mistake is when people have sprint days without exposing the muscle to a sprint-type environment while they’re already at their peak. A fresh muscle doesn’t mimic race speed.

If you want to increase speed at end of run, take a muscle and fatigue it. Run four to five miles, then do sprint work so it mimics the race.”

According to Dobbins, the three main elements to look for are: • Control in the heel - There cannot be true support if the heel is not controlled • Stability in the midfoot or arch - This needs to be a snug fit around the midfoot • Release in the forefoot - The forefoot should be able to flex and allow your body to be as efficient as possible in the propulsion phase “A properly fitted shoe won’t do the workout for you,” Dobbins says. “What it will do is reduce the chance of injury and discomfort, allowing you to maintain your regimen. It’s hard to get motivated when your feet hurt.”

WORD ON THE STREET For a runner like Kevin Gaston, 44, training is all about building up his endurance. He has run multiple races including two 5Ks, one 10K, the ING half marathon and the Peachtree Road Race. “For a 10K I like to run fast, so I train by running in intervals,” he explains. “I’ll do a number of three mile runs, or intervals of one mile on a running track.”

When he’s working out to maintain his stamina, Gaston hits the running track one to two times a week to do intervals of ¼ mile or 100 and 200 meters. “Sometimes I’ll jog ¼ mile, and after every lap, I go to a workout station to do push-ups, pull-ups or abdominal work,” he says. “I call it ‘active recovery’ because it allows you to run at a higher level than you would normally.”

For less serious runners like Nick and Shannon Seyfried, both 34, training for this year’s Peachtree Road Race involves chasing after their toddler. “I won’t be going for gold this year!” Shannon says with a laugh. “I typically get into running mode by running around Piedmont Park or the Chattahoochee River trail several weeks before.”

After 10 combined years of running the Peachtree (six for her and four for him), the Seyfrieds don’t worry too much about preparing for the big day. “It is such a great, well-run race,” Shannon says. “The support from the community is so amazing that little prep is needed for hydration while running – even in Atlanta July heat!” They’ve also made a tradition of going out for a celebratory lunch following the run. “We like to hit the Nook in Midtown post race” Nick says.

For veteran runner, Bill Payne, 63, this year’s race will be a bit different from years past. After 32 years of running Peachtree, he’ll be one of the 150,000 observers lining the streets to support the participants. “I just had surgery for my torn meniscus,” he says. “I ran my first Peachtree Road Race in 1979 after a friend asked me to do it with him. I really did hope to run this year because I was going to run with my 10-year-old grandson.”

Payne’s running career is certainly one to be proud of. In fact, he’s run 12 marathons, countless 10Ks, and at age 58, he did an Olympic distance

triathlon. “I ran the first marathon so that I could run faster 10Ks in the spring,” he says. “I was trying to break 40 minutes— and did—but it took three years. The trick was to do speed training three times a week.”

MORE RACE DAY TIPS FROM THE PROS Get Acclimated “Because the race is in July, you’ve probably been training in more moderate temperatures, so you need to acclimatize your body to the temperature at which you’ll be running,” Cole says.

“Go out during the hotter part of the day and be active, whether it’s working in the yard or playing with your kids. Expose yourself to heat and work your way up to training in that environment.”

Know the Life of Your Running Shoe “Never try new shoes on the day of a race, and always train in shoes you plan to race in,” Dobbins says. “Get a new pair of racing shoes one month out and run in them for at least two weeks to develop adequate comfort for a race. Three to six months is the life of a running shoe.”

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate “Drink about one pint of water one to two hours before a race, and take a sports beverage along with you,” Cole says. “Gatorade or anything with 20 percent carbohydrates will get you where you need to be. This prevents the depletion of electrolytes and keeps glycogen in the blood high. This is the main source of energy for localized muscle.”

• In 1978, the race finish was moved to Piedmont Park in front of the Bath House to accommodate the 6,500+ runners.

• The Shepherd Center’s Wheelchair Division was added in 1982.

• Due to the drought in 2008, the race could not finish in Piedmont Park and was moved to Juniper Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

• The first AJC Peachtree Jr. was held in 1987.

• Approximately 3,400 volunteers are needed to work the race.

• Water is provided to runners at each mile, and approximately 500,000 cups and 120,000 gallons of water are used during the race.

• It is estimated that the Peachtree Road Race costs over $1,000,000, if in-kind contributions are included.

• Since 2004, satellite Peachtree Races have been held for U.S. soldiers stationed overseas. The Atlanta Track Club sends race supplies, including T-shirts, to the runners.

• The men’s course record is 27:04 minutes, which was set by Joseph Kimani in 1996.

• In 2011, the race cap increased to 60,000 and an online lottery system was implemented for registration.

• Lornah Kiplagat is the women’s record holder with her run of 30:32 from 2002.

• In addition to the 60,000 participants, approximately 150,000 observers line both sides of the course to cheer and support the runners.

• The coolest starting temperature on race day was 62 degrees in 1986 and 1989. The warmest temp was 80 degrees in 1970, ’73, ’77, ‘80, ’83 and ’91.

• On July 4, 1970, 110 runners gathered at the old Sears parking lot on the corner of Peachtree and Roswell Road.

The group, now known as the “Original 110,” ran 6.2 miles through Atlanta to Central City Park in what would go down in history as the inaugural Peachtree Road Race.

“In terms of food, eat something light the morning of the event such as toast or a bagel,” Russell says. “It’s also important to stick with foods that you’re used to eating prior to your training runs. Race morning is not the time to introduce new foods into your diet.”

DR. DEBRA G. CARLTON – WINNER Bio: Dr. Carlton is a physician of internal medicine and associate medical director of primary care and informatics with Kaiser Permanente of Georgia.

Her mission is to make health and fitness an integral part of her life and help others do the same. She is married to William Craven, an orthopedic surgeon and former NFL player.

They have three daughters; Mariah, Morgan and Meredith.

How has life changed since turning 40?

My three daughters have grown up and are successfully on their own. Each time our daughters have reached a milestone, my husband and I have reflected on what it took to get there. We always came back to involved parents, extended family, friends and community. Our children benefited from their relationships with grandparents, aunts, uncles, babysitters and our friends.

I can’t overstate the importance of making sure your children have concerned, supportive people in their lives.

Also, I have become a better communicator, more open and straightforward. My husband and I have been married 33 years and I attribute a great part of our success to open communication, which I had to learn. Open communication makes the truth available to you at all times.

I am more intentional about my health and well-being because I have had a lifelong struggle with my weight. My road to weight control began with a program at Kaiser Permanente called 10,000 Steps. Our goal was for every employee to walk 10,000 steps a day. The accountability of tracking and reporting my daily steps jumpstarted my path to consistent physical activity, and it continues to this day. Since then, I have run three Peachtree Road Races and finished one triathlon. Currently I work out about four days per week. My activities include step, Pilates, boot camp, dance and weight training. I also bike and run. I have become a huge proponent of including weights as part of my exercise routine. I have found that activity is a key to keeping those extra pounds away.

I embrace the fact that others can benefit from my experience and knowledge and that I can benefit from theirs. At my age (well past 40), I have lots of experiences I can share and I still have a lot to learn. I have come to understand how important it is to let people know what I’m doing and when I need help. I also understand that others do not always ask for help, and offering it up when I see the need is important. Help can come in many different ways – a listening ear, an objective viewpoint, a show of love and support.

What is your favorite vacation getaway?

About four years ago, one of our daughters taught English as a second language in Jakarta, Indonesia.

My husband and I planned a trip to Indonesia and Thailand to visit and travel with her as her assignment was ending. We traveled to Jakarta, Bali and Jogjakarta in Indonesia as well as Bangkok and Chang Mai in Thailand. It was an incredible trip in many respects. The culture, art and architecture were amazing. And the people were great! Whenever we have traveled outside the U.S., we have said, “We are all more alike than we are different.” People all over the world want the same basic things: love, hope, security, education, food and financial stability. My hope is that more of us, through exposure to other cultures, can appreciate the similarities as well as embrace the differences of others.

What is your best piece of advice for our over 40 readers?

Thrive by being intentional about treating yourself well.

• If you are overweight – lose weight. Your life depends on it.

• Eat nutritiously. If you need guidance, the USDA has a great website, www.choosemyplate.gov. www.bestselfconnect.com

• Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week and put it on your calendar. Find something you enjoy and stick with it.

• Get enough sleep – seven to nine hours. Sleep deprivation can make weight loss more difficult!

• Learn to deal with stress. We all have stress in our lives. We can avoid some stressors, but not all. How we react to stress is what is important.

• Enjoy your family and friends.

• Read a book.

• Learn something new.

How do you give back to your community?

I am thrilled to be associated with a non-profit organization called Open Hand. I sit on its board as co-president. I have been associated with Open Hand for about two years, but it has been in existence for over 22 years. Both Kaiser Permanente and Open Hand are focused on the importance of preventive healthcare for individuals and for the health of the U.S. as a whole. I also work on various volunteer projects through Kaiser Permanente and provide medical consultations to the homeless population in Atlanta whenever I can.

What is your favorite book and/or quote?

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What fictional character or celeb do you identify with?

Instead of favorite fictional character, my favorite historical figure is Harriett Tubman. She is a historical figure whose courage, leadership, caring and faith I greatly admire.

How would your friends/family/peers describe you?

From Dr. Carlton’s daughters: I would describe my mom as amazing. She is able to juggle many different aspects of life-work, personal health, family, friends and even wedding planning-with grace and calm. She is practical yet passionate, and classy yet down to earth.

She has always taught us to do our personal best and accepted our flaws with unconditional love. I love my mom!

My mom is tireless, savvy, fierce, dedicated and selfless.

She is love. She somehow manages to be both the perfect storm and the calm that comes before it. She is the quiet rainbow that appears after.

From Dr. Carlton’s sister: My sister is someone you can trust to be there for you, to deliver on her commitments and her word and to be consistent in how she shows up.

Who are the people that help you be your best self?

There are so many people who have had a significant impact on my life that it’s impossible to name them all. That led me to ask myself, “Why so many?” The answer is my parents. My mother taught my sister and me respectfulness and humility.

My father taught us courage and persistence. Both taught us about setting lofty goals and working hard to achieve them. Their influence made it possible for me to receive the “teaching gifts” that others had to offer.

I am more patient with my body, I have less patience for negativity and I am conscious of the clock ticking away now and I want every moment to count.

Unfortunately I haven’t taken a vacation in nearly five years! However, I love to surf, so anywhere where there is consistent surf such as southern California or Hawaii I count as my favorite places to be.

Last year I participated in EDIN’s Celebrity Dance Challenge to help raise money for their organization, I was the keynote speaker for SEGO (southestern gynecological oncology) Survivor’s Day and every year Authentic Beauty provides makeup services at Cure’s Quiet Heroes Luncheon for the moms of children with cancer.

What is your best piece of advice for our over 40 readers?

Get to work on listening to and unfolding your authentic self. It changes all the time.

Do not ignore what’s important. Make time for yourself and commit to designing a life you love. That includes your image. Do not allow your visage to become a caricature of the past.

Who are the people/professionals that help you be your best self?

My staff! Crystal Rock does my makeup and brows, Tatiana Jones does my lashes (which have transformed my life), Pam DeWeese does my color and Lindsey Skyrocker does my hair styling whenever I want to look awesome. I see Dr. Larsen of Buckhead Plastic Surgery for a little lift every now and again, and The Gym of Buckhead where I work out five days a week.

ANDREA GRIFFIN – 5TH PLACE Bio: Andrea is such a busy lady that her car tag says “buzybee.” She is a wife to Carey, mother to children Kylie and Ben, and district manager for Verizon Wireless. Not only does her work keep her busy but her very active children keep her constantly on the move! She loves being a mother and takes pride in teaching her children all of the wonderful things her mom and dad taught her. They would probably say I am genuinely energetic, kind, fun-loving, caring, very organized and the most positive person they know. Going through this process of being nominated for the “Over 40 and Fabulous” contest, so many people said so many wonderful things about me, and it is truly humbling.

What makes you feel fabulous?

I love birthdays and have always enjoyed getting older, but for my 40th birthday I wanted to do something extra special. I sat down about six months before my birthday and wrote out a list of things that made me happy. The first two things were “get a massage” and “get a pedicure.” After that, the list took on a whole new twist as I wrote things like “send a friend flowers,” “write a note to someone and tell them what they mean to you,” “call someone you have not spoken to in more than five years and take them to lunch,” and “sincerely compliment five people today.” The list goes on and on. I had over 75 things on the list that made me happy and they all were about making others feel good about themselves. So for the 40 www.bestselfconnect.com

days before my birthday, I did one thing off my list every day (sometimes two things), and it was the most fabulous 40 days I have ever had. And in the process, I realized that making others feel good about themselves genuinely makes me happy!

What famous person or celebrity do you identify with?

Mary Kay Ash was a woman who people never expected to start and run one of the most successful cosmetic companies in the world. But she had a secret that motivated her and that same secret motivates me.

She chose the bumblebee as her personal mascot, and so did I. The bumblebee, based on the aerodynamics of its body, should not be able to fly. But the bumblebee flies anyway! You can’t change what people think about you. You can only make up your mind to be a success at whatever you choose.

What is your favorite vacation getaway?

Probably one of my most memorable vacations was to New York City. My family had a great time exploring the city. One of the things I am personally working to complete is a vacation to all 50 states where I can spend time traveling all over the state and really experience what the state is all about. This is the main thing on my bucket list, and I have 13 states to go.

What is your favorite book and/or quote?

Growing up, my mom was a wealth of quotes. She had a quote that inspired her on just about everything, and told them to me daily. I think the one that inspires me the most is, “if you think you can, you can, and if you think you can’t, you are right!” Mom did not write this quote, but said it to me all the time. I realized at an early age that being successful starts with your belief that you can do it!

When you are over 40, you are old enough to be content with who you have become but not too old to continue to change. Life is about growing and changing, and I am still doing that every day!

Believe it or not, my favorite vacation getaway is my home! I travel quite often with my work as the regional minority health consultant for the southeastern United States and really enjoy coming back to my own bed and surroundings.

How has life changed over the age of 40?

The biggest change is that I realize life ends.

When the doctors told me that both my baby and I could’ve died, it changed my life forever.

For the first time I was faced with a situation that I couldn’t work hard and pray for a different outcome. God had delivered the final verdict.

My baby was dead and my marriage was failing, and from that emotional tsunami I learned that 40 brought a second chance to surrender to God’s plan and stop dictating my will and my way.

What makes you feel fabulous?

Every new day I get, I work out, not only spiritually but physically, and I do gratitude runs where I spend my

How has life changed over the age of 40?

My life over 40 changed in my approach to it. My motto is be feisty and fearless.

After all, what do you have to lose? You learn through mistakes anyway. While I try to learn something every day, I hope that I have self-actualized by this point in time. For that reason, I don’t take matters too seriously and have recognized that to love and be loved is the only thing that matters in life.

What makes you feel fabulous?

I feel fabulous when I hike and run along my favorite river paths, gather with my gal pals each month for brunch at a different restaurant in town, read on a porch beside a raging mountain creek, listen or dance to music or travel anywhere.

What fictional character or celebrity do you identify with?

Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride and Prejudice.”

What is your favorite vacation getaway?

Besides a long weekend at the Inn at Smithgall Woods, a week or three on a cruise on the high seas also has the ability to make my heart sing.

I love Wonder Woman. I identify with the power, strength and being the only superwoman hero standing sometimes. That character continues to be the one I relate to today when I feel like I have to step up and be the one to make the changes I want to make in my life and the lives of others.

What is your favorite vacation getaway?

I love Hawaii or any place with beautiful water and beaches.

What is your favorite book and/or quote?

My favorite quote is Romans 8:28. “For we know that all things work together for the good of those called according to His purpose.” That served as my anchor when things in my life just didn’t make sense.

How do you give back to your community?

I sign up for 5K and 10K races for different charities and I waive my PlanBE coaching class fee at least once a month to serve those who cannot afford a coach.

What is your best piece of advice for over 40 readers?

Be slow to label a situation as bad in your life. You don’t know enough to put that kind of final definition on it, so be open to the possibilities that can come from devastation, heartbreak and destruction.

Who are the people that help you be your best self?

My parents inspire me to be my best self. My mother is my spiritual anchor and my father is my example of being a warrior no matter what. I feel so grateful to be able to call them my parents.

What is your favorite book and/or quote?

I’ve been a vigorous volunteer for many organizations such as the Junior League of Atlanta, the Atlanta History Center, the Atlanta Symphony Associates, University of Tennessee Atlanta Alumni Chapter, the Georgia CourtAppointed Special Advocates (CASA), Pink Ribbons Atlanta, and my sorority alumnae chapter, Delta Delta Delta.

What is your best piece of advice for our over 40 readers?

Reinvent yourself every year. If tenured associations with people, places or things bring you down, lose them. The short-term pain of loss will be erased by the long-term gains in peace of mind. Every moment counts, so why not experience joie de vivre at all times.

Most days you might spy me singing at the top of my lungs in my rag-top convertible on I-285!

Who are the people/professionals that help you be your best self?

The people who help me be my best self are my staff, friends and family. As for the latter, we are very close. We had to lean on each other a lot when I was growing up, relocating every other year or so as a military family. My entire immediate and extended family taught me a lot about character, leadership, public service and the importance of relationships, all combined with a dash of humor. If you can’t laugh, you perish.

Do not tan in tanning beds and always have your bras fitted properly. A properly fitted bra will prevent hard spots in the breast and make you look taller and thinner in your clothes.

Bio: Angela grew up in Texas and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin before taking off to Budapest, Hungary to spend a year teaching English abroad and working on independent films.

After returning to the states, she moved to Atlanta and has been here for 18 years. In 2004 she founded the Atlanta Rollergirls and has been involved with the sport of flat track roller derby ever since. After turning 40, I have a much better idea of the path I want my life to take and I have more confidence in my decisions. I have plans, I look forward to completing goals and I feel great about the accomplishments I’ve made in my life thus far. By no means do I have all the answers, but I’ve got a lot more than I used to have!

What makes you feel fabulous?

When I am able to help someone else grow. I watch a lot of women come into Atlanta Rollergirls or Atlanta Derby Brats and I love seeing them blossom and become the best they can be. Helping women find their stride, gain confidence and accomplish their goals is the most fabulous thing I’ve ever done and I am so thankful to be able to do so.

What is your favorite vacation getaway?

My favorite vacations were always spent with the Rollergirls! I played on and coached our all-star team, the Dirty South Derby Girls, for six years and traveled all over the country with the team. I’ve had so many amazing experiences with those ladies.

We experienced victory and defeat, but we went in and left as a team and there’s no better feeling than that. The trips where my husband traveled with us were doubly great!

How do you give back to your community?

I have helped to create and continue to work to promote the sport of roller derby throughout the Atlanta area. This sport provides not only fun and fitness, but also provides women with a group they are a part of regardless of shape, size, religion or ethnicity.

When you join Atlanta Rollergirls, you join a family that will offer you support regardless of life’s ups and downs.

I am also so proud to have started the Atlanta Derby Brats. Through roller derby, we are building confidence and leadership skills in the future women of Atlanta. I have been so lucky to have met and worked with some amazing young women. They make me so proud with their drive to learn, their ability to work together and their acceptance of one another.

What is your best piece of advice for our over 40 readers?

Age ain’t nothin’ but a number! When you get older some doors may close but so many others open. Don’t look at getting older as the end of everything. It’s just a new beginning to a different set of exciting adventures.

Who are the people/professionals that help you be your best self?

My mother and my grandmother have always helped me be my best self. My mother provided me with so many opportunities without which I would not be the woman I am today. She made life choices that were very difficult for her but she did them to provide me with the best start to life and to guide me toward becoming my best self. I’m so grateful to her for that. From my grandmother I learned patience, kindness and empathy towards my fellow humans.

To keep sodium levels as low as possible, we use other flavorings like fresh herbs and spices instead of salt. To sweeten foods, we use less processed sugars like honey, which also provides antioxidants.

OK, what new and interesting things can we look forward to on the GMM menu?

Some of the newer featured items in the Spring/Summer 2012 meals include greens like kale, Chinese broccoli and Swiss chard, which add that extra pizzazz to some of our dishes. We’ve also added a new hand-cut Chicken Gyro marinated in house with a homemade Tzatziki Sauce.

Wait - are there also health benefits to food prepared in-house?

Absolutely! Preparing our own meals allows us to have a fresher product without extra preservatives or cheap flavor enhancers and gives us control over fat and sodium levels in our meals.

Pinpointing Joint Pain What are some common causes of joint pain?

Joint pain can be caused by a trauma, overuse or from arthritis. There are many types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The most common arthritis is osteoarthritis. As one gets older, arthritis is the most likely cause of joint pain.

Is there a difference between joint pain and arthritis, or are the two interchangeable?

Joint pain is a symptom of arthritis. Stiffness and swelling at the end of the day are also symptoms of arthritis.

At what age does joint pain typically occur?

Joint pain can occur at any age. If it is not related to a traumatic event and lasts for more than 10 days, it is best to visit your orthopaedist for an evaluation.

How do you diagnose arthritis?

Arthritis is a diagnosis made by evaluating the patient’s complaints, examining the joint and then taking x-rays.

Osteophytes (spurs), a decreased joint space, cysts and sclerosis (thickening) of the bone are all radiologic signs of osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthropathies can be diagnosed based on blood work. Crystalline arthropathies such as gout sometimes require placing a needle in the joint to remove fluid (aspiration) and then evaluate that fluid under a microscope.

What are the best non-surgical treatments for joint pain?

Treatment of joint pain varies depending upon the etiology. Frequently, a short course of rest, icing and anti-inflammatory medication is all that is necessary to resolve the episode.

Can diet and exercise affect this?

No specific diet has been shown to affect joint pain, but there is some support for changing one’s diet in order to see if there is an effect. Exercise is usually aimed at maintaining or improving range of motion of the affected joint. Over-exercising can aggravate joint pain and arthritis.

When is joint replacement urgery necessary?

Joint replacement surgery is a last resort for joint pain.

When medication, bracing, exercise and joint injections fail, the best method of treatment is to remove the worn out joint and replace it with metal, ceramic and polyethylene. Hips, knees and shoulders have been replaced for over 40 years with great success, bringing millions of people relief from the pain, allowing them to return to active lifestyles.

The sacroiliac joint is often overlooked by most doctors. The sacroiliac joint or S/I joint is a semi-fixed joint, located approximately at the top of each buttock, between the hip joint and the lower back. It sits between the sacrum, at the base of the spine and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined by ligaments.

It is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint (A lubricant in most major joints) with irregular elevations and depressions that produce interlocking of the two bones. Humans have a left and right S/I joint that often match individually but are highly variable from person to person.

When the S/I joint becomes inflamed or degenerated from an old fall, slip or minor trauma, it is called S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliatiis. The S/I is also susceptible to overuse, especially with women who have given birth. During the birthing process, this joint is exposed to high levels of stress, increasing that areas susceptibility to arthritic changes and arthrosis. When this happens, the joint surface is no longer smooth, causing irritation to the surrounding overlapping tissues and nerves. Weak ligaments in the area may also allow the S/I to “shift” improperly causing undo stress.

The problems and pain associated with S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliitis can include unexplained groin pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, leg inflammation and even sciatic type nerve problems. What is your most memorable experience from volunteering?

Moving the very first family into their own fully furnished apartment and seeing the excitement on the daughter’s face was my most memorable experience. Also, hearing the graduate moms tell their success stories at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is a highlight.

How can others get involved?

We welcome individual volunteers and service groups. Individuals can sign up for an orientation and then volunteer with TDH on a regular basis, or they can contact Lynn Canty at lcanty@thedrakehouse.org and schedule a day to come in this summer.

Are there any upcoming events at The Drake House that people could get involved in?

Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ will be held on August 26 at the Historic Roswell Square. We need people to volunteer the day of the event. We can always use weed killer, and our dream donation would be a new lawn mower and blower!

Dinner & A Cause Cards Starting June 1, diners can enjoy a wonderful meal while also supporting a great cause. The local nonprofit organization Children of Conservation is offering the Dinner & A Cause Cards for the entire month of June. my journey picked on in the early years, it just means you have something epic in line for your future. What better way to share those stories than through talking about our scars of all types?

As a transplant patient yourself, what made you decide to become a speaker and mentor to other transplant patients?

In 1993, being a liver transplant recipient was very rare, and to add to it, I was a teenager and didn’t really have someone I could reach out to who could relate. So when given the opportunity, I wanted to share what had been self-taught with others who were facing their own challenges and inspire them to reach for greatness. Georgia Transplant Foundation started their Mentorship Program along with so many other programs and I just had to be a part of it.

Transplant mentor and trailblazer Since going through a liver transplant in 1993 due to undiagnosed hemorrhaging tumors, Amy Tippins has dedicated her time and efforts to helping other transplant patients. Tippins is an Atlanta native and the founder and CEO of RockScar Love Designs, a clothing company that focuses on helping people with physical and emotional scars. In partnership with Live Wright Society, RockScar Love Designs launched the “Scars R Sexy” campaign in March in an effort to give people a platform to tell their stories.

What makes the “Scars R Sexy” campaign unique?

There is zero prejudice. Scars are being celebrated for the beauty that they are in this campaign, and for the beauty that we all have inside us and out. We are providing a place of safety for people to share their most difficult moments in order to find their own healing and to help others heal.

What was the inspiration behind creating RockScar Love Designs?

My transplant and my childhood experience growing up were the main catalysts for RockScar Love. For starters, I have a really hard time seeing people use their life’s circumstances as an excuse.

Experiences are given to you in order to teach you how to do something. It’s about how to achieve greatness, not why you can’t.

The second reason is that I experienced a tremendous amount of bullying from students, coaches and adults growing up because I was “different” in their eyes due to my sickness. I wanted young people to see that through heartache can come something absolutely beautiful and amazing—life! Being made new! Empowerment! If you are 70

What inspires you in your daily life?

God, my niece and nephew, the emails I get from people telling me how “Scars R Sexy” gave them a voice and helped heal something inside of them.

What do you do to stay healthy and active?

I love spin classes, weights, yoga and my dog. I try to eat healthy, I meditate and pray, and I love music! I also have to stay close to the positive people in my life and admit when I can’t do it all myself.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Two phrases that were not as much advice, but words of encouragement that have helped to make me the person I am today and shape what I do: “You are worthy” and “To tell someone that you believe in them is to have faith in all that they do. Have faith in them as people. I believe in you.” Both statements were made to me by the same person. Both have forever changed me because they reminded me that I am worthy, but that it is my responsibility to make something of that, and if I don’t, then that is my failure as a contributing member of society.

Who are the people and/or professionals in your life that help you be your best self?

My doctor, Andrei Stieber, my sister, my niece and nephew and an amazing group of friends.

What has been the most interesting thing you’ve discovered about yourself when you went through the process of having a transplant?

When I thought I had nothing left in me to give or keep going forward, I had to remind myself to dig deep inside and find that extra push. Going through the process was the hardest thing in my life. The physical side is unreal. What your body goes through is something not many people even think about, but that is not even the hard part. Your mind is what changes. You deal with “survivor’s guilt” in some form or another. Some days it just seems easier to stay in bed with the thought always lingering in the back of your mind that there could be a day that your organ will go on strike again. I don’t let any of that affect me, and I do not know how I do it some days, to be honest. Now, I’m not saying I don’t have rough days, because I certainly do! I just have learned how to control how it affects my life. I have also discovered that the more I am able to give back, the more vulnerable I have to choose to be with my feelings, and that is not always an easy thing to allow to happen.
