HIFU can work for you

A new prostate cancer treatment option is waiting. Prostate cancer is more treatable today than ever before—but too many men beat the disease, only to experience crippling side effects, like erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. That’s why doctors and patients everywhere are so excited about HIFU. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), is a non-invasive treatment that destroys prostate cancer cells without harming the surrounding tissue. HIFU offers drastically reduced side effects, no radiation, very little pain, and no overnight hospitalization—all with the same efficacy rates as more invasive treatment options. In Atlanta, the recognized authority on HIFU is Dr. Vahan Kassabian of Georgia Urology, who has years of experience performing the procedure. If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, remember—HIFU can work for you.

Meet Our Team of Aesthetic Dentists

The Beauty of Spring! Springtime in Atlanta is a sight to behold. Nature explodes in color, animals frolic, and spring cleaning is in full swing. This is the time when our city comes alive and is quite simply beautiful. It’s the perfect season to refresh, renew and shine. Welcome to our 2018 Beauty Issue, which celebrates beauty from the inside and out. From the ultimate magic of a mother’s love to the kind of outer beauty that can help us feel better about how we look, we have hundreds of tips and resources to help you transform your look and get a fresh perspective.

Dr. Debra Gray King is the founder of the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry (ACCD) and a pioneer in cosmetic dentistry. She is one of less than 75 dentists worldwide to be an Accredited Fellow, which is the highest level of competence recognized by the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). She has been featured on The Doctors, Extreme Makeover, the Wall Street Journal, and various news media outlets.

And back by popular demand for its 8th season, voting is in full swing for our 2018 Over 40 & Fabulous! contest. This contest measures true beauty by celebrating Atlantans who look good, make healthy living a priority, and do good things to help others live a better life. The annual celebration is made possible by the support of our Advisory Board panel of experts and partners. They join us to provide you with information and tips to help you navigate health and beauty options to look and feel your best after 40. Did you know your hair quality and style can add years to your look? Did you know that there is a fitness facility that has a large, active and supportive community of over-40 Atlantans? Did you know that just because you are getting older, it doesn’t mean you have to lose your confidence in your feminine self? Our Advisory Board is here to help. Meet all of this year’s experts (below) on p.45 and get advice that can help you thrive and be your best self.

Dr. Charlie Cooper is an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). He has transformed thousands of smiles and his cosmetic cases are used in lectures nationwide. Dr. Cooper studied at the world famous Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. He is a regular participant in the “Give Back A Smile” Program in which he and the ACCD donate their time and skills to help battered women achieve a new smile.

2018 Advisory Board Dr. Ken Anderson of Anderson Center for Hair & Aesthetics Karen Foley of Windy Hill Athletic Club Ming Matthews of Bob Steele Salon Dr. Stanley Okoro of Georgia Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Dr. Louis Prevosti of VEINatlanta Dr. Monte Slater of Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging Tom Sullivan of 11Alive Shops Around Lenox And a special thank you to our Over 40 & Fabulous! reveal party host Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

Celebrating Carey Carter

A Celebration of Womanhood From makeup transformations to the ups and downs of being a mother, this issue is a celebration of womanhood. On Feb. 21, we hosted our second “Amazing One-Hour Makeovers” event. This year, professional wardrobe and accessory stylists were on hand to add an extra layer of sparkle to the makeovers. And although each of the 13 lucky reader attendees walked into the Best Self Atlanta Studio already beautiful, after 60 minutes with the artists and stylists, they walked out even more radiant. It’s inspiring to see how a new look can truly reflect what’s on the inside. Meet this year’s professionals and see how they worked their magic on p.27. Although being a mother in no way equates to fulfilling your female potential, for many, it is a role they cherish. In honor of Mother’s Day, we gathered insight and advice from Atlanta moms on how they handle the tougher aspects of parenting. Wading through child-rearing tips from well-meaning friends and family to brushing off mom shaming are just a few of the topics we tackle in “The Messiness of Motherhood” (p.53).

Atlanta’s fashion and style community came together at Flourish in Buckhead to remember an icon and friend on Monday, March 19. “CELEBRATING CAREY

CARTER” DREW NEARLY 500 OF ATLANTA’S SOCIAL SET FOR A FASHION SHOW AND COCKTAIL RECEPTION THAT HONORED THE MEMORY OF CARTER BARNES CO-FOUNDER AND PHILANTHROPIST CAREY CARTER. Monica Pearson, long-time friend of Carter, lit up the stage as emcee of this touching tribute, which raised funds to benefit the newly named “Carey Carter Therapeutic & Medical Services Center” at Murphy-Harpst, the residential treatment center for Georgia’s most severely abused children that he supported for many years.

Carter died on January 18, of complications from a stroke. Throughout his career, he chaired countless galas, earning him 11 Alive’s Community Service Award, and raising millions of dollars for causes such as Murphy-Harpst, The Chelko Foundation, AID Atlanta, Jaden’s Ladder, UNICEF, Susan G. Komen and Open Hand. One of his greatest legacies remains the “Carey Carter Reading Room,” a library that he donated to Murphy-Harpst, and to which he continued to stock with books each year.

Finally, we’re taking a fresh approach to our yearly breast cancer coverage. We’re breaking out of the October (and pink) mold with Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta. On p.39, learn more about why the organization has renamed its popular Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta Race for the Cure and where it’s focusing its efforts in the fight against breast cancer. I hope this issue encourages you to lift up the women around you and take time for yourself. Happy reading,

Alex McCray Associate Editor

Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before legacy models who Carter worked with over his expansive career hit the runway in fashions by Saks Fifth Avenue and hair styled by Carter Barnes on Paces.

We also chatted with another mom, Jennifer Webb, about her book “Mom’s Soul Café.” The author and meditation leader takes a hilarious and raw look at having what some call the toughest job in the world. In her “My Best Self” Q&A, Webb shares how mindfulness saved her sanity and how it can help you too.

Quiet Helpers

Fidget spinners, a ball-bearing toy that rotates between the fingers, have become a trendy coping tool for kids with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and autism. However, they are often banned from schools for being a distraction. But according to the education advocates at Brain Balance Achievement Centers, silent alternatives such as kneaded erasers, sand-filled stress balls, chair rubber bands, or doodling can work just as well. bestbites Shrimp Boil Skewers

Registered dietitian and nutritionist, Carolyn O’Neil, who is also a blogger and author of “The Slim Down South Cookbook,” shares how to get the flavor of a shrimp boil without the mess—or the calories! INGREDIENTS: • 24 wooden skewers • 2 tablespoons butter • ¾ cup chopped red bell pepper • ½ cup chopped sweet onion • 1 garlic clove, minced • 2 cups corn kernels • ½ teaspoon Creole seasoning

• ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • ¼ cup Old Bay seasoning • 24 baby red potatoes • ½ pound smoked sausage, cut into 24 slices • 24 peeled and deveined extra-large raw shrimp (about 1¼ pounds)

DIRECTIONS: Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add bell pepper, chopped sweet onion, and garlic. Sauté 4 minutes. Stir in corn and Creole seasoning and sauté 3 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in parsley and vinegar. Bring Old Bay seasoning and 5 quarts water to a boil, covered, in a large stockpot. Add potatoes and cook 10 minutes. Add sausage and shrimp. Cook 3 minutes until shrimp turn pink and potatoes are tender. Thread 1 potato, 1 shrimp, and 1 sausage piece onto each skewer. Arrange on platter. Spoon corn mix over skewers. Details: TheHappyHealthyKitchen.com

Instead of reaching for protein shakes, grab a bowl of ProYo. The revolutionary “ice cream” packs in 35 grams of protein per 14-ounce container. Each of its nine flavors are also low in fat and made with natural nongenetically modified ingredients. For an afternoon pick-me-up, try blending two scoops of the Blueberry Pomegranate with frozen berries and milk. Top off your berry bowl with nuts and flaxseed for a well-rounded snack. Find ProYo at an Earth Fare, Kroger, Publix, or Fresh Market near you. Details: ProYos.com

CREATE A GREENER KITCHEN: 3 Simple Steps toward Sustainability BY: Emily Clausen, PeachDish

Eliminate Food Waste When a bruised apple goes in the trash, it’s not just wasted food and money. Water, gasoline and packaging, along with labor, are lost too. However, it’s easy to keep food waste way down in your kitchen! • Buy only what you need. It’s hard to waste food you don’t have! PeachDish, a meal kit service in Atlanta, sends you portioned ingredients to make dinner a no-brainer. • Preserve extra ingredients. If you see fresh ingredients that you can’t not snag in bulk (u-pick berry farms are SO tempting), freeze or preserve what you can’t cook through. • Make delicious soups, salsas, and smoothies. Unwanted greens? Spin ‘em into pesto.

• Recycling: Many food packaging materials can be recycled curbside (pro-tip: DON’T bag your recyclables). Even better, if you’re a PeachDish customer, just send it back to us! • Reuse: Reuse jars for storage and organization or small bottles for travel, and ice packs are always a handy tool.

Recycle A big side effect of portioned ingredients? A stack of plastic and cardboard that can look disheartening. Don’t worry, you can lessen the environmental impact, and contribute to your community!

• Giving Back: Groups like Meals on Wheels, scout troops, or first-aid offices always need ice packs. Local farmers will reuse egg cartons and jars. Have dozens of bottles? See if a school or daycare needs them for crafts or experiments.

• Regrow food: Many fruits and vegetables can be “regrown” from stalks and stems. You’ll never need to buy green onions again when you realize how quickly they regrow! • Make stock: Toss together your scraps and bones to simmer up a flavorful soup base. • Compost: There are several composting methods. PeachDish works with Atlanta-based Compostwheels to turn our spoil into soil!

Gains Without Pain

Clothes with a Cause

For the more than 1.2 million children in Georgia who live in low-income families, activewear is a luxury. Roswell residents Lisa and Mathew Moore founded Moshyn to change that. The one-for-one online athletic apparel company makes eco-friendly tank tops and T-shirts that are manufactured in the U.S. or in international factories that are certified by Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production, which promotes ethical manufacturing. Any time you buy one of Moshyn’s fun tops, its nonprofit arm, Youth In Moshyn, donates a new gym outfit, including shirt, shorts and socks to a deserving child in the community. So far, more than 100 children in Georgia and more than 1,100 youngsters nationwide have received gear. Details: MoshynWear.com

“No pain, no gain” is a harmful tagline for a healthy lifestyle. If pushing through pain progresses to a more severe injury, it can lead to the derailment of your fitness journey. Pain while working out is not normal. It is a warning sign that you are loading your muscles or joints improperly, explains Alexis Lowery, PT, DPT, OCS of Atlanta Physical Therapy. Physical therapists are clinically trained movement specialists equipped to keep your gains on track without pain.

High-Tech Health Want to see your workout results through more than just your reflection in the mirror? If so, try a 40-second full-body scan at Next Age Fitness. Is this procedure with injectable fillers permanent? No. This nonsurgical approach is not the solution if you are looking for a permanent change to the shape of your nose. These injections last anywhere from six months to two years. Surgical rhinoplasty is the only permanent option.

Q Q Q Q

Am I a good candidate for injectable fillers? If you are looking to remove wrinkles and lines, avoid complex surgical procedures, and see quick results, injectable fillers can be a great option for you.

Q

How long does the procedure take? Injections normally take around 10 minutes to complete.

Q

Are there different types of fillers? My staff and I use a variety of fillers and will recommend the best option available to address the issues in which you are most concerned.

Q

Is the procedure painful? You will experience some minor discomfort during the procedure. Topical anesthetics are applied to the skin beforehand to minimize any needlestick pain. The newer fillers I use are hyaluronic acid-based fillers containing a small amount of lidocaine, which also helps in reducing pain.

Q

What about recovery? You should have little or no pain after the injection(s). In some cases, there is minor bruising and some irritation around the injection site but, usually, the patient can continue on with their day.

Q

How fast will I see results? You will see smoothing of the skin and reduction of wrinkles almost immediately. The results can last six months to two years.

MEET THE ARTISTS OF

We turned Atlanta’s most talented makeup artists loose on 13 lucky readers at our second annual “Amazing One-Hour Makeovers” event in February. This year, we added fashion to the mix with the help of David Duncan of Style4Style in partnership with Bloomingdale’s, Kam Throckmorton of BEAUXLD jewelry, and Morgan Wider of Wider Style, who provided clothes and accessories styling. Onlookers observed the artists at work while enjoying delicious food and beverages provided by Red Pepper Taqueria, Gold Star Vodka, and Hendrick’s Gin. There is no-down-time; treatment is very comfortable, there is no anesthesia, no recovery period; no pain and you will see immediate results. Treatments are a series of three monthly 30-40 minute sessions. New collagen is generated beneath the skin which lifts, tones, and tightens the vaginal canal and external skin. This has the positive effects of decreasing urinary leakage with coughing, laughing, or during sex, improving sensation and may improve orgasm, improving blood supply to the area and also improving vaginal lubrication. It also decreases urinary tract infections. All women after childbirth in menopause benefit by restoring youthful vaginal function. The results can significantly enhance your sex life.

Why Race for the Cure is embracing a new title, new colors, and a refreshed focus.

W

hen it comes to breast cancer awareness, some

worry the intended message about the cause becomes obscured in the “pinkification of everything from jewelry to shoes. This is one of

the reasons Susan G. Komen has unveiled a new name for the annual Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta Race for the Cure, which will now be called the Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta More Than Pink Walk. The change reinforces the notion that the movement is not about a color, but a proactive call to do more in the fight against breast cancer.

Go Beyond the Pink

Susan G. Komen’s four pillars represent the organization’s work toward its mission to end breast cancer. At the More Than Pink Walk on May 5, participants will be immersed in the nonprofit’s four pillars of emphasis. Funds raised will provide services to those who cannot afford them and support cutting-edge research to advance Komen’s goal to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026. The title is also intended to bring attention to the resources Komen offers and the hands-on work it does. Below, meet five Atlanta women and men who have been directly impacted by Komen’s key pillars.

An assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Susan Thomas develops cancer immunotherapies and explores their potential to combat breast cancer. Immunotherapy is emerging as a powerful new way to treat cancers that are impacted by the immune system, like breast cancer. Susan G. Komen

provided a $450,000 grant to Dr. Thomas and her team to provide the support needed to advance this exciting research and achieve new breakthroughs in breast cancer. The grant was also awarded to develop nanotechnology, which works by aiming the powerful drugs directly to where they are needed so they will work better with fewer side effects. Thanks to Komen and Dr. Thomas, this local research will have a global impact.

As Komen Atlanta looks toward the future, the affiliate is committed to reaching more of the city’s minority population. In Atlanta,

African-American women are 40 percent more likely to die from breast cancer and 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage. Through outreach programs such as Sisters of Promise, Komen Atlanta aims to end breast cancer disparities. To register for the Susan G. CARE

In 2014, Delphyne Lomax remembered that it was time for her mammogram. Recently divorced and without insurance, she was lost as to where she could go for this essential check. Fortunately, she went to

the Center for Black Women’s Wellness and received a free screening through a mobile mammogram clinic funded by Komen Atlanta. A few days later, Delphyne received the devastating news that she had breast cancer. Luckily, it was caught early. This experience drove her to encourage her friends and family to get screened. Her sister listened, got a mammogram and was also diagnosed with breast cancer. They underwent chemotherapy and radiation together and both defeated the disease. Today, Delphyne is a Komen Atlanta advocate among the metro Atlanta African-American community.

ACTION President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta from 1992 until 2017, Janice McKenzieKrayton has always had a passionate, philanthropic drive. When she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, she underwent lumpectomy surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Eight years later, Janice was diagnosed again, and in 2013, she received her third breast cancer diagnosis. At this point,

Janice decided it was time to become a megaphone to tell her story that cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence. She got involved with the Komen Atlanta Board of Directors and immediately found her calling in educating the African-American community. Recently retired, Janice has committed her time to Sisters of Promise, a group of Komen Atlanta volunteers dedicated to lowering breast cancer mortality for African-Americans in metro Atlanta. rom an early age, Dr. Bahar Nia took a keen interest in her father’s dental practice, hovering around him, watching his skilled approach and hoping to follow in his footsteps. Once she turned 18, she decided to pursue her college education and work toward her dental degree. Having family and an affinity for Atlanta, she started taking courses at Georgia State University (GSU) and Georgia Institute of Technology. She and her husband, Frank, met while both students at GSU, but she completed her undergraduate work in Houston, near her sister. The couple were back together again for dental school at the University of Pennsylvania and she followed up studies there with a residency at MD Anderson Cancer Center back in Houston.

dentistry practice. The sole focus of the newly renovated Buckhead Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is to provide exquisite, concierge level patient care. “I want to create a lasting impression for patients. No one will ever be treated like just a number or name in the appointment book. This practice has the latest technology and a beautiful spa-like aesthetic in a convenient location, but what’s most important is connecting with my patients so that I can anticipate their needs.” While nurturing her relationships with other seasoned dentists, Bahar is poised to lead the way in creating beautiful smiles through modern cosmetic dentistry. This approach is sure to attract not only families but also the likes of sports superstars and local celebrities.

Over-the-Counter or Professional Treatment? When to choose expert care…

For Bahar, creating long-term personal relationships with her patients helps her bring them the best possible care. “I have a holistic approach. Treating the whole patient gives insight into a variety of problems with symptoms that show up in the mouth and teeth—grinding, sleep apnea, and nutrition,” Bahar says. She feels honored by the trust her patients have in her and respects the challenges that might lead them to her office door. “For me, cosmetic dentistry really isn’t just ‘cosmetic’ at all. These are lifechanging improvements, which bring new confidence to people. That’s extremely important.”

So what does a top cosmetic

It was key for Bahar’s office to be close to her house, the schools her two daughters attend, as well as to be central to the community. “We love this area. We spend Dr. Bahar Nia with husband, Frank, and daughters. a lot of time with the girls at Chastain Park, at the tennis center or amphitheater for concerts and festivals. We are huge fans of Bartaco, Superica, and Rumi’s Kitchen.”

Turns out, many of the drugstore items work quite well. “I am pro over-the-counter products such as Sensodyne® ProNamel® and I love Philips Sonicare,” Dr. Bahar Nia reveals. However, she warns over-the-counter whitening products won’t measure up to professional because the formulations are too different and cannot give “the wow factor as most patients wish.” She sports guards, noting “the overthe-counter products are of a one-size-fits-all mentality … not comparable to one that is custom made by taking a mold of the teeth.” For serious problems, such a malocclusion, crowded teeth, Bahar advises concentrated professional attention by a cosmetic dentist with an artistic eye to give phenomenal results.

Is it time to enhance your looks so you can truly enjoy your life? You’re ready to tackle the lumps and bumps you see in the mirror, but need some direction. “What does a mommy makeover actually entail?” DR. STANLEY OKORO OF GEORGIA PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY offers insight into how to find the right cosmetic treatment for you.

Is your hair aging you? HAIR EXPERT: Ming Matthews, Bob Steele Salon BobSteele.com Try these five tips from MING MATTHEWS OF BOB STEELE SALON for haute tresses that stand the test of time.

Women often think that once they hit 40, it’s time to go short. Some women can pull it off, but the majority can’t. Look at the overwhelming number of Hollywood stars who are over 40, most have long to mid-length hair. If you want a new style, add color or bangs.

Say No to Structure Super structured updos are a big no-no. This can create an old-fashioned look.

3

Don’t Keep Your Cool

2

You’ve spent the last 10 to 15 years concentrating on your children, and now it’s time to focus on yourself. Mothers deserve to have their body back after pregnancy. We can do breast augmentations and/or lifts and combine them with tummy tucks to give our patients their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Ashy hair color has a cool undertone that often appears gray. Sometimes, this cool tone makes skin look pale and sickly.

4

Add Moisture

What should people look for when choosing a doctor? Always pick a board-certified plastic surgeon. Real

Healthy hair should routinely include products like the Kérastase Densifique Densimorphose Thickening Treatment Mousse, which creates density without weight. Products like these allow moisture to be held in the hair, making it look plump and hydrated.

5

BODY PLASTIC SURGERY EXPERT: Dr. Stanley Okoro, Georgia Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery GeorgiaPlastic.com

plastic surgeons have more training, and most importantly, can treat any complications that arise from their procedures.

What can people do to maximize their results? Maintain, maintain, maintain! All patients should uphold a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet and exercise routine after any procedure.

Talk it Out

If there is a look you desire, talk about it with your stylist. Discuss the length in detail—an inch is always an inch but show the stylist what you think an inch will be. As far as color, bring photos. Be open to discussing the possibility that your hair may or may not be able to change on the first try. Often, we can achieve your goal, but it may take a few months as not to damage your hair.

What would you tell people who are concerned about the price of cosmetic procedures? I often tell my patients, “Do you want it done right, or do you want it done cheap?” In the long run, if patients are looking for the cheapest cosmetic option, they often end up paying more because they need revisions. People should also consider their safety over price.

Want to sport short shorts all summer long? The secret to legs you love? According to DR. LOUIS PREVOSTI OF VEINATLANTA it’s maintaining their health. Here, he offers advice on how to take care of them for years to come.

What signs / symptoms should people look for as it relates to vein disease? One out of three women experience vein disease, yet many ignore their symptoms. Symptoms may include achy, heavy, swollen or tired legs. Changes in the skin can also occur, such as redness, discoloration, itchiness, and exceptional dryness, along with a burning sensation or numbness. In advanced cases, skin breakdown and ulceration can develop.

Photography by Brian Reeves, Perfect Day Photos.

Is there anything people can do to limit their risk for developing common vein conditions? Some risk factors are unavoidable, i.e., family history and female gender. However, the risk of developing vein disease can be lowered by avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, exercising, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight.

Why is it so important for working professionals to seek the care of a vein specialist? Many professions require prolonged sitting or standing, which can put individuals at a greater risk for developing vein disease. Vein disease is a progressive medical condition and can become worse if left untreated. A dedicated vein specialist can restore your legs, beginning with an accurate diagnosis and a customized treatment plan. Most treatments are covered by insurance. If you experience any symptoms, call VEINatlanta at 404-662-3407 or visit VEINatlanta.com for your free screening today!

Ready to break free from bathrooms? FEMININE REJUVENATION EXPERT: Dr. Monte Slater, Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging SlaterMD.com For millions of women that suffer from incontinence, a simple laugh, sneeze, or workout can evoke a sense of panic. Whether childbirth or time have taken a toll on your body, DR. MONTE SLATER OF AESTHETIC BODY SCULPTURE CLINIC & CENTER FOR ANTI-AGING reveals how feminine rejuvenation can help you get your life back.

What is a common misconception about feminine rejuvenation? Many associate feminine rejuvenation with improved sexual function, and while it does offer this benefit, it also can improve urinary incontinence.

What quality-of-life benefits does feminine rejuvenation offer? Many women who have given birth have some form of urinary leakage, most of which is not severe enough to require surgery. These women are advised by their gynecologists to double down on their Kegel exercises and wait until they become a candidate for surgery. In the meantime, women are being held hostage by this issue. Correcting pelvic dysfunction problems such as stress urinary incontinence, even if mild, can profoundly affect one’s sense of well-being and self-confidence.

What types of feminine rejuvenation are available? We are excited to be able to offer women an alternative to surgery, improved urinary and sexual function, and a definite improvement in quality of life. Our various female rejuvenation techniques address issues of stress urinary incontinence, improved vaginal tissue health, and improved sexual and libido function. Methods we use to accomplish these include V-Lase®, a laser-based treatment, ThermiVa®, a radio-frequency based treatment, the O-Shot®, which utilizes platelet-rich plasma, and bioidentical hormone replacement for women.

How can I look and feel my best over 40? Taking care of himself has always been a priority for TV host and corporate emcee TOM SULLIVAN. And now that he is over 40, he finds himself looking and feeling better than ever. Here’s his advice for being your best self at 40 and beyond.

Ready to get out of your workout rut? FITNESS EXPERT: Karen Foley, Windy Hill Athletic Club Midtown.com/atlanta Busyness can knock even the strictest workout warriors off their routine. KAREN FOLEY OF WINDY HILL ATHLETIC CLUB shares how convenience and the right environment can be crucial to building an exercise routine you can’t quit.

What’s the secret to getting the most out of a fitness routine? Our trainers and instructors know how to make workouts enjoyable because we believe the best way to achieve any fitness goal is to have fun doing it.

What is one of the biggest trends emerging in the fitness world?

What should people look for when searching for a fitness facility? Every person is different with unique needs, so it’s really about the type of experience they’re looking for. Windy Hill is a clean and safe fitness oasis with group exercise, squash courts, a rock wall, an indoor track, activities for kids, a locker room with full amenities, a café, and more. Our team makes sure members feel supported and that our facility gives them everything they need to be successful. Plus, membership is actually less than what you would pay for a single boutique studio experience.

MEDIA/COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR Tom Sullivan, 11Alive TomOnAir.com

What tricks of the trade do you utilize to be your best self? Buckhead Elite Training Studio with Javarious Broxton keeps me in shape. Cryo Elite Therapy reduces wholebody inflammation and increases energy. The Nouveau Clinic keeps my skin in check.

What have you learned since turning 40? I think as you get older you become wiser and more grounded. I’ve strengthened my faith and grown as a person. I now host and emcee corporate/charity events and freelance on “Atlanta & Company” on weekdays.

What advice would you give to someone about to turn 40 or who is already over 40? Have a grateful heart and always trust your gut!

For years, DR. KEN ANDERSON OF ANDERSON CENTER FOR HAIR & AESTHETICS has been a leader in the world of modern hair restoration. Now, with the addition of aesthetics, his practice is the go-to for hair loss treatment and skin that glows.

How do I get my hair back?

BEFORE

Are the days of hair plugs really gone? The introduction of the ARTAS® Robotic System was a technological quantum leap forward in the field of hair restoration surgery. Compared to a traditional, linear hair extraction with a scalpel, robotassisted hair restoration surgery is less painful and offers a quicker recovery time. Additionally, because there is no linear scarring, which is a telltale sign of traditional hair restoration surgery, it allows clients to have short haircuts. What other new treatments are available for hair loss? Hair restoration continues to evolve at a rapid pace.

AFTER

In addition to robotic technology, we also have stem-cell therapy and low-level laser therapy treatments available.

What will my hair restoration experience be like? We are a world-class center that is specifically for people with hair loss. I do all of the consultations personally, and we offer a very comfortable environment in a private facility. No patients meet face-to-face, and we only do one procedure per day. That way we can dedicate all of our time and effort to each particular case.

How can I make my 40-year-old skin look 20 years younger? What are some of the hottest antiaging skin care treatments? The Fractional Antiaging Treatment is amazing and helps to build and strengthen collagen, diminish fine lines, and resurface the skin. Microneedling is also wonderful for improving pore size, and reducing sun damage and wrinkles.

Tell us more about your signature facials. Whether you need pampering or clinical correction, we have you covered. We offer a basic facial, seasonal specialty facials, a 24K Gold Facial, the Fire and Ice Facial, and advanced clinical facials.

What skin care lines do you recommend? We’re huge fans of iS Clinical’s superior quality cleansers, treatments, moisturizers, and sun protectants. These have been a mainstay of clinical skin care for more than a decade. Plus, Viktoria De’Ann Peptide Cosmeceuticals is our favorite new product for targeted corrections. The Messiness of Motherhood Celebrating the Imperfections of Parenting and Finding Your Own Style

By Amy Meadows

I

was a mom twice over and I was not feeling like I was “supposed” to feel. Our family schedule had fallen into place, both of my boys were healthy, and my work was back on track. Yet, I couldn’t get over the sense that I wasn’t doing things correctly. I felt out of sorts. Everything should have been a certain way, and it wasn’t. And then my very wise therapist said something that has stuck with me to this day: “You have to stop ‘shoulding’ all over yourself.”

It

was an aha moment. The kind Oprah Winfrey has talked about for years. So much of the pressure I felt was selfimposed—yet based on the way I thought I “should” be parenting because of what I saw all around me. And it was difficult to find my way in a sea of messages about what I “should” be doing. So I couldn’t find a way to really celebrate the mom I had become. Maybe you can relate? Whether you have small children, teenagers or young adults who are getting ready to leave the nest, it can be challenging to embrace your own parenting style. Fortunately, it can be done. We’ve asked moms in the metro area to share their insights about the most challenging parts of this roller-coaster ride called motherhood. Their stories and revelations about some of the most talked-about topics in mother circles today just might help you find your way to championing the mom you are.

Personalize Your Parenting Style Oftentimes, your parenting style comes from a combination of sources. And in many cases, you find yourself doing the opposite of what you’ve known or what you expected you would do. The key is to find what works best for you and your family.

The First Days of Motherhood When you’re in the newborn or infant phase, it’s hard to imagine celebrating yourself as a mother. “We are bombarded with these images of what a ‘good’ mom looks like. Moms are born into motherhood with expectations and start off already feeling inadequate,” says Melissa Keane, LAPC, a therapist who specializes in supporting women through the journey of pregnancy to parenthood. “There are moms who seem like they can do it all—get up and look perfect and seem so natural at it. But if it doesn’t come naturally to you, you feel like you did something wrong.” Fortunately, there are ways to help you ease the transition into motherhood. Keane suggests: • Surround yourself with supportive people and accept their help. “It’s a myth that we have to do it all on our own. Historically, women didn’t necessarily do it on their own. It takes a village,” Keane notes. Let someone come over and do your laundry or set up a meal train for you and your family. That tangible support can make a difference. • Reject perfectionism. No one says you have to be perfect. “Nothing about motherhood is perfect,” she reveals. “You can’t control that. You’re going to be OK if the house is messy or you don’t put on makeup or you don’t fit into your pants five days postpartum.” • Know when to seek professional assistance. The “baby blues” can be very normal, as you’ve just been through a life-altering event. However, if you don’t feel like yourself after a few weeks or experience severe symptoms right away (you can’t get out of bed, you’re constantly crying or you have a history of mood or anxiety disorders that seems to be rearing up again), then it’s time to seek help. Find a provider who understands—and possibly specializes—in maternal mental health. You can find trained professionals through the Georgia Chapter of Postpartum Support International; visit PSIGA.org to learn more.

“I knew what I didn’t want to do. And I think that’s really valuable. Knowing what you don’t want is often more powerful than what you do want because parenting is always going to be this unknown. We’re parenting our children for a future that is faster than we can even imagine. We don’t really know how to prepare them. We might as well be launching them into space. We have no clue what’s coming up [for them], so we have to give them a firm but flexible foundation. If you’re too rigid, the second there’s a crack, they will tumble.” –Katherine Michalak, mom of three boys, ages 17 and 14 (identical twins) “My pediatrician gave me the best advice: don’t read parenting books. A lot of it is in you—use your instincts.

Don’t do what everyone else does. Instead, parent by instinct and the reaction of your children. We’re more traditional, so for us, rules are standard. But we see the importance of parenting children differently. There are different ways to handle situations for a social child versus a nonsocial child. Whatever you do needs to fit the child, and you adapt that over time.” –Melanie Frady, mom of an 8-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son

Photography by (bottom right) Angie Hammond.

“It’s important to remember that all moms have their own individual struggles and are trying to do their best. Be confident in yourself, have faith in your decisions, and trust your gut. You don’t have to be perfect to be an amazing mom, you just have to love your family.” –Teri Xerogeanes, mom of a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son

“I would go on playdates, and I just didn’t connect. I would come home defeated every time. I would look at people who were doing things like making homemade bread every day, and it felt like such a competition. I cut out mom groups and playdates. As a mom, I had to stop comparing myself to everybody else. It’s still hard to this day. But I read a lot of self-help books to help me find my inner strength. I have to look at what makes me and my family strong.” –Melanie Frady

Avoid the Comparison Trap It’s very easy to fall into the trap of comparing everything you do as a parent to someone else, thanks in large part to the presence of social media in our lives. Yet, those comparisons can be inaccurate and also detrimental to your psyche. “Everything online is curated. And there are useful and not-so-useful components to comparing ourselves. If the way someone is doing something lines up with your values [and you want to do it too], then that can be viewed as ‘useful peer pressure.’ But the other side of it just feeds into the sense that we’re not doing something right.” –Dana Goldman, LPC, NCC, of Stone Cottage Counseling, mom of a 3-year-old daughter bestselfatlanta.com

Tackle Mom Shaming

Photography by (bottom left) Cherished Moments Photography and Albums; (top right) Ashby Webber of Ashby Webber Photography.

The idea of “mom shaming” has come to the forefront in recent years, with the term becoming a very common one as women discuss their parenting choices with others. It’s important to know how to deal when you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation. “At first, I did attach myself to a [child-rearing] philosophy, which is very natural and child-led parenting … But [I found that] any group attached to a certain way of doing things will have a group mentality that says, ‘We all do it this way.’ You’ll contend with judgment. If you’re not ‘doing it correctly,’ someone may reject you or shame you or correct you. I was at a playdate, and [my son] was upset. I wanted to leave, and a mom came to me and said, ‘You should stay and allow him to cope.’ The way she delivered her message was so undermining to me and my instincts. I knew this [playdate] wasn’t crucial. And I immediately knew that I couldn’t be part of anything that makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong. So I separated myself from that.” –India Powell, mom of a 4-year-old son “I think it’s OK to engage someone if it’s personal. If someone is speaking in generalities, you can roll your eyes and walk away. But if they look at you directly and say something about you as a parent or about your child, you have—and maybe I’m feisty—an obligation to you and your child to validate your point of view. If it’s online, people feel emboldened to say something using a keyboard that they

Katherine Michalak and husband enjoying life with the boys.

Take Care of Yourself Taking care of yourself as a mother can mean so many things, from taking time out for yourself to chasing your own dreams. Whatever it means to you, it’s actually a key element of motherhood. “For many parents, being told to make time for yourself can increase anxiety. You’re already feeling behind and there may be real barriers and challenges to making time for yourself. It’s easier said than done. But I always think about when you go on a plane with a child, and they say to put your own oxygen mask on first. We have to provide ourselves enough oxygen to be present for our kids. For those parents who feel guilty about making time, remember that tending to our own needs can actually benefit our children.” –Dana Goldman, LPC, NCC “You need to spend 30 minutes a day finding a way to understand yourself. That’s one of the most important parts of parenting. And it’s whatever that means to you—exercising, journaling, meditation, prayer. Just 30 minutes. You won’t solve world problems, but you’ll be checking in with yourself. You have to have something for yourself before you can share it with someone else.” –Katherine Michalak

would never say in person. I’ve found that it lessens the older [your children] get. Moms are more active and vocal in the toddler, elementary, and early middle school years. But puberty becomes the great equalizer. Nobody makes it through puberty unscathed. We’re all in the trenches. People learn slowly but surely to keep their own counsel. If you’re online, you’d better be ready. Karma will keep you in check.” –Katherine Michalak bestselfatlanta.com

0418_052-057_MOMS.indd 57

“Studies show that the more time working mothers spend taking care of themselves, the better their children are both emotionally and physically. Moms are the motor that keep the family machine running smoothly and that’s why it’s so important to make time to take care of yourself. Whatever it is that makes you feel good—do it! As the saying goes, “When mama’s happy, everyone’s happy!” –Teri Xerogeanes Resources Melissa Keane, LACP, NCC, MelissaKeaneCounselor.com Stone Cottage Counseling, StoneCottageCounseling.com BEST SELF ATLANTA

partners in health What Is Healthy? It all begins with the heart By Scott D. Miller, M.D.

e all want to be healthy. We search for the best diets, try to exercise regularly, and wonder which supplements are the most beneficial. There is an abundance of information on how to become healthier, but what is “healthy?” In order to achieve a goal, we must define it. As a urologist, I am often asked, “What can I do to keep my kidneys healthy?” My answer is a very simple one: whatever keeps your heart healthy will keep your kidneys healthy. After all, a kidney is a specialized collection of blood vessels. Whether we want to keep our minds sharp or our “man parts” working beyond their years, it all starts with the heart. A rich flow of blood will supply us with all of the nutrients and disease-fighting elements that our body craves.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy heart, the checklist is a simple one: • A diet with a Of all the diet and exercise programs balanced variety of out there, the best ones are those that work fruits, vegetables, for you—not the other guy. protein, complex carbohydrates, and “good” fats Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical • Avoid processed foods and “simple” sugars

• Caloric intake to match your daily energy expenditure (or slightly less if you want to lose weight) • Moderate exercise on a regular basis • Stress reduction

What are some measurements of a healthy heart?

• A good night’s sleep every night

The best indicator is how you feel on a daily basis. Is your energy level good throughout most of the day? Can you climb a flight or two of stairs without becoming short of breath? Are you generally happy with the way your life is going? These subjective measurements can be the most reliable indicators of good health, but we should not ignore the following objective metrics:

• Health screening by your primary doctor at least once a year

• A reasonable exercise tolerance, adjusted for age and any existing medical conditions or limitations • A sensible and realistic body weight • A good report from your physician at your annual wellness visit, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels

• Don’t smoke

D

isorders of the spine constitute one of the largest public health problems in America, costing billions of dollars annually. Statistics indicate that in our lifetime, each of us will experience an episode of back pain requiring medical intervention. Enter, the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physicians at Resurgens Spine Center. What is a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Physician? PM&R Physicians, also known as physiatrists, are medical doctors who have completed training in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In addition, they must pass both a written and oral examination administered by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). Physiatrists are subsequently skilled in the diagnosis and management of a variety of nonsurgical musculoskeletal/ orthopaedic and neurologic conditions that cause acute and chronic pain, as well as musculoskeletal and neurologic dysfunction. What areas do PM&R Physicians specialize in? There are numerous areas within the field of PM&R in which to specialize. Among these are interventional spine care, electrodiagnostic medicine, sports medicine, spinal cord injury, and brain injury to name a few. Because back pain, spine disease, and spinal injury are responsible for such a large percentage of disability in the general population, many physiatrists have chosen to specialize in treating those particular entities. Six ways we manage your care conservatively and maximize your outcome without surgery: • Obtain a complete history and perform a physical examination to assist in directing your care and in determining the source of your pain (muscle, disc, bone, joint, etc.) • Use different diagnostic studies (X-ray, MRI, CAT scan, bone density), and interpret and review these studies with you to assure your complete understanding of the results • Implement the use of a variety of anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxant, neuropathic, and, if needed, narcotic pain medications to help alleviate your symptoms • Perform electrodiagnostic studies, electromyography (EMG)/nerve conduction velocity (NCV), to assist in diagnosing and determining

prognosis for neurologic disease processes and nerve-related injuries of the spine and limbs • Prescribe a focused and individualized physical therapy program utilizing therapeutic “hands-on” exercises and various modalities specifically effective for your problem • Offer diagnostic and therapeutic interventional spinal injections and procedures. Included among these are epidural steroid injections, selective spinal nerve root blocks, facet and sacroiliac joint injections, and discograms to name a few. Our patients are injected at one of our state-of-the art outpatient surgery centers, with the assistance of fluoroscopy (X-ray) and contrast, to reinforce optimal placement of the medicine. Resurgens Spine Center Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physicians: At Resurgens Spine Center, we have a dynamic team of specialized board-certified physiatrists to provide comprehensive care for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders and spine-related pain. We utilize the most up-to-date research to identify clinical protocols and utilize the latest technology to maintain the highest standards of care. From Day One until discharge, at any of our 23 office locations in the greater Atlanta area, our physiatrists will assure personal and professional care. Our team approach to treating patients of all ages will secure continuity of your care within the Resurgens family.

partners in health Living Gluten-Free: Recognizing and Understanding Celiac Disease By Nirav R. Patel, M.D.

C

eliac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten—a protein commonly found in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is typically found in foods such as bread, pasta, pizza, pastries, and cereal. Consuming these foods causes damage to the lining of the intestine. This leads to difficulty absorbing nutrients from food. While there are only 40,000 known cases of celiac disease in the United States, it’s estimated that this digestive disorder affects more than 2 million Americans—including adults, adolescents, and children. People who have a first-degree relative with celiac disease have a 1 in 10 risk of developing it. Other high-risk groups include those who have Down syndrome, type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, and juvenile chronic arthritis. Signs & Symptoms Celiac disease can be difficult to diagnose because it affects people differently. Some develop celiac disease as children, while others later as adults. The “classic” symptoms of celiac disease include:

• Dental Enamel Defects • Delayed Growth and Puberty • Dermatitis Herpetiformis (itchy skin rash) • Fatigue • Depression or Anxiety • Irritability and Behavioral Issues • Seizures or Migraines • Iron Deficiency Anemia • Missed Menstrual Periods • Infertility or Recurrent Miscarriage Young children tend to exhibit more classic signs of celiac disease along with growth problems, while older children and adults tend to have symptoms that are not entirely gastrointestinal in nature. Recent research has demonstrated that only a third of adult patients diagnosed with celiac disease experience diarrhea. In fact, the most common sign of celiac disease in adults is iron deficiency anemia that does not respond to iron therapy.

• Abdominal Pain and Bloating

Detection & Treatment

• Vomiting

If you are experiencing these symptoms or have additional risk factors, you should be evaluated for celiac disease by a gastroenterologist. It is advised to see a doctor first before cutting out gluten from the diet, which will help make diagnostic testing more accurate. Highly sensitive and specific tests can be useful screening tools. If celiac disease is suspected, an upper endoscopy with small intestinal biopsies is recommended

• Chronic Diarrhea • Weight Loss or Failure to Thrive • Pale, Foul-smelling, or Fatty Stool Some of the less typical, nongastrointestinal manifestations may include: • Arthritis/Joint Pain • Osteopenia/Osteoporosis

Our registered dietitians have helped many people suffering from celiac disease achieve and maintain a healthy and happy gluten-free lifestyle. to confirm the diagnosis. Once confirmed, living a lifelong gluten-free diet is the only known treatment available at this time. Guidance from your physician or a registered dietitian can be quite helpful in maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet. Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates offers comprehensive nutrition counseling at many of our offices across metro Atlanta. Our registered dietitians have helped many people suffering from celiac disease achieve and maintain a healthy and happy gluten-free lifestyle.

An Answer for the Most Common Cause of Hair Loss in Women By Grattan Woodson, MD, FACP

Atlanta women with androgenic alopecia (AGA), the most common cause of chronic hair loss, now have access to an effective new therapy. This comes about as a consequence of advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of this disease. There is no cure for AGA, given its genetic cause, but when these advanced treatments are administered appropriately and the newly restored hair is conserved with Minca Scalp Spray, the resulting hair regrowth is almost as good as a cure. A Common Conundrum Androgenic alopecia is common and affects about 50% of Caucasian women. Hair loss due to AGA in women begins in the late 30s and accelerates during the 40s as women approach menopause. AGA advances significantly after menopause and can lead to loss of scalp cover. The rate of hair loss slows in the majority of patients once they are in their 70s and 80s. However, for 1 in 5 people with AGA, it can become more severe and result in hair loss from the entire head and leave large swaths of scalp uncovered. There are always some wisps of hair remaining, even in the most advanced cases. A Simple Solution Before there is loss of scalp cover, AGA is effectively treated with Minca Scalp Spray, which was designed in our laboratory exclusively for women. The Minca Scalp Spray contains pharmaceuticals, hormones, and antihormones that protect the hair follicle from the predatory effects of testosterone, increase its access to vital resources including protein, minerals, and fats, and augment the blood supply to the base of the follicle.

There is no cure for AGA, given its genetic cause, but when these advanced treatments are administered appropriately and the newly restored hair is conserved with Minca Scalp Spray, the resulting hair regrowth is almost as good as a cure. For more advanced cases of AGA, we add treatment with platelet rich plasma in tandem with microneedling. Research and our patient experience show this approach to be a very effective form of management. We reserve it for women with scalp exposure to induce hair recovery within the affected and surrounding areas of the scalp. Treatment is repeated every month until sufficient organic hair regrowth has been achieved. Once hair cover has been reestablished it is conserved and maintained solely by twice daily use of Minca Scalp Spray. Our goal is for patients to grow their own hair naturally and to be able to go anywhere

and do anything with their hair. In most women, these therapies yield positive results that are visible within 3 months. It is important to remember that a treatment is not a cure. A woman who has successfully regrown her hair using our therapies still has AGA, the underlying disease that caused her hair loss. If she stops use of the Minca Scalp Spray, she will lose the benefits she has worked so hard to gain. Insurance companies or Medicare does not cover our treatment services. Great Legs For Life By David A. Martin

A

few questions for Darrell Caudill, MD, FACS, Medical Director of VeinInnovations (VI) from David A. Martin, the Founder and CEO of VI. I recently caught up with Dr. Caudill at his office in Sandy Springs to ask him some questions about the future of vein treatments. Here’s what he told me:

DM: Dr. Caudill, you’ve been a full-time vein specialist since 2006. In the twelve years since you devoted yourself to this specialty, what changes have you seen?

Colleagues for more than 20 years, VeinInnovations Medical Director Darrell Caudill, MD, FACS, and CEO David Martin, RN, share a moment’s consultation.

DC: Surprisingly, most of the changes I’ve seen have not been positive ones. The basic procedures we do have remained more or less the same, with the thermal ablation techniques still the go-to therapies. There have been improvements in laser fibers for instance, with the advent of the radial fiber, which allows for more precise distribution of energy, but the mainstay of therapy remains the radio-frequency catheter that started it all nearly 20 years ago, and hasn’t changed much in the past 15 years or so. The negative changes I have seen involve the many physicians who have decided to treat veins as a sideline, rather than a primary form of practice. These doctors may do an adequate job at the partial treatments they provide, but they cannot provide the same level of care as a primary vein practice such as VI or others.

DM: So, the actual treatment techniques have remained about the same for 15 years? Isn’t that sort of unusual? DC: Yes, it is a bit unusual for a widely practiced set of procedures to remain relatively unchanged for such a long period of time. This is the case with thermal ablation partly because the procedures were so good to start with that improving them happens only incrementally, in small ways. But that’s not to say we don’t look for improvement constantly. At VI, for example, we have utilized other techniques that don’t require the administration of tumescent anesthesia, which of course the thermal catheters do because of the tremendous heat they generate. Some of

these new procedures have involved embolization coils to block the veins, and precisely controlled, ultra-sound guided injections of a new drug called Varithena. These things have shown some promise; the Varithena for example can be safely used in the lower leg without concern for tissue and nerve damage which remains a danger with the thermal devices.

“We have been asked to be the principal investigator for a brand-new procedure that involves a newly invented catheter.” — Darrell Caudill, MD, FACS DM: So is there anything new on the horizon at VeinInnovations? DC: Actually there is. We have been asked to be the principal investigator for a brand new procedure that involves a newly invented catheter. Our initial testing of this device was done last year, and we believe it has the promise to be a major advancement in vein treatment as it doesn’t involve heat or any sort of foreign body. It is also painless, and requires no anesthesia of any kind, nor does it require the use of compression stockings after the procedure. Because it uses no heat, it can treat the entire leg safely, and because it requires no anesthesia, more than one leg can be treated at a single session. The hope is that this will ready for general use sometime in the coming year.

Making Time for Mom By Karen Foley

Why is it so important for mothers to take time for themselves? Moms are often pulled in a million different directions and it can be difficult to carve out time for self-care. Having time to focus on their own health not only makes them stronger physically and mentally, it can even make them better moms.

Moms love the club as a respite and a great place for their kids to interact with other kids. Mothers feel comfortable bringing their children here and feel that their kids are safe and loved while they get a workout in.

Photography by Jon Ramirez

What resources does Windy Hill Athletic Club (WHAC) provide so moms can make time for themselves? We have outlets for moms to utilize our club in whatever way is best for them, which can be different every day. We have tennis teams where moms can play matches and socialize. We have group classes so they can sweat it out with their closest friends. We have cardio equipment for that alone time, yoga to quiet the mind, and a café to have a meal and enjoy adult conversations. For just plain relaxation we have a whirlpool, steam room, sauna and luxurious showers— having a moment to take a shower is a big deal when you’re a mom!

What about childcare? We have Kidtown, which is a place where moms can bring children as young as 7 weeks all the way to 12 years old to play and learn for up to 2 hours a day up to 10 hours a week. Activities at Kidtown include puzzle time, homework helper, kid creation, storytime, and more.

How does WHAC help moms create a sense of community? We believe active social people lead happier and healthier lives. The facility provides that setting. You can meet friends here and find people that you share common interests or similar goals with.

Tell us more about the kid-friendly programs and amenities WHAC offers. The club has children’s programs throughout the week so kids can enjoy swim lessons, tennis lessons, squash lessons, “Group X” classes, climbing the 50-foot rock wall, and playing tennis or basketball. There are programs for kids of all ages. We even have a “Learner’s Permit” program to help kids ages 8 to 17 know their areas in the club. As the weather warms up, children can head outside to play on the playground. Plus, there are swimming pools where moms can go to relax or bring the kids to have fun in. And if the whole family works up an appetite, you can stop by the café, which has a children’s menu, to have snacks, lunch, or dinner.

What do moms have to say about their experience at WHAC? Moms love the club as a respite and a great place for their kids to interact with other kids. Mothers feel comfortable bringing their children here and feel that their kids are safe and loved while they get a workout in.

B

looming flowers aren’t the only things that accompany the arrival of spring, so do the billions of tiny pollen particles that trigger seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as hay fever. Hay fever can not only affect your quality of life, it can also lead to sinus infections, disrupt your sleep and affect your ability to be productive at school or work.

You may suffer from hay fever if you have the following symptoms: • Itching in the nose, roof of the mouth, throat, eyes • Sneezing • Stuffy nose (congestion) • Runny nose • Tearing eyes • Dark circles under the eyes If you suspect you suffer from hay fever, consult with an allergist or immunologist who can diagnose you. A specialist can also perform simple tests to determine your specific allergy triggers.

If you do have hay fever, use these four strategies to reduce symptoms: • Keep track of pollen counts in your area by subscribing to the National Allergy Bureau’s email alerts.

If you suspect you suffer from hay fever, consult with an allergist or immunologist who can diagnose you. A specialist can also perform simple tests to determine your specific allergy triggers. • Take a shower after coming indoors. Otherwise, pollen in your hair may bother you all night. • For long-term allergy relief, consider allergy shots (immunotherapy) for relief from allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Did you know?

• Limit outdoor activities during days with high pollen counts.

Depending on where you live, there are generally three pollen seasons. The start and end dates of these seasons, as well as the specific plants, vary based on the climate.

• Keep windows closed (at home or in the car) to keep pollen out.

Trees generally pollinate in the spring. Birch, cedar, cottonwood and pine are

big allergy triggers. Grass releases its pollen in the summer. Timothy, Johnson, and Rye grasses are examples of allergens in this category. Weeds cause hay fever in the fall. Ragweed is the biggest offender as it can grow in nearly every environment.

D

id you know? The number one cause of death from oral cancer is related to human papillomavirus (HPV). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this will be an epidemic that affects more than 80 million people over the next 20 years. While cervical cancer is associated with HPV, oral cancer is too. Here is the scary part—oral cancer doesn’t hurt. You often don’t feel its wrath until you have advanced symptoms. We used to think that if you were a smoker, you had the highest chance of getting oral cancer. People are not smoking like they used to, so why are rates of oral and tonsillar cancer still so high? HPV.

“As a dentist, I always do an oral cancer screening at every hygiene visit. ”

There is a lot of buzz about getting your children vaccinated for HPV. The problem for adults is that if you have ever been sexually active, you could have, and still can, contract HPV. While there are over 200 strains of the virus, there are only two that are associated with cancer—HPV 16 and 18. Your general practitioner, gynecologist or urologist can test you. As a dentist, I always do an oral cancer screening at every hygiene visit. Any sore in your mouth that hasn’t gone away in 2 weeks needs to be followed up by a visit to an oral surgeon or an ear, nose, and throat doctor. Remember, early oral cancer detection doesn’t hurt!

— Jill M. Golsen, DMD Look out for advanced symptoms (conditions that last more than 2 weeks) that might include: - A persistent hoarseness or sore throat - Difficulty swallowing - A swollen but not painful tonsil - A red, white or black discoloration on the soft tissue in the mouth. Make sure your dentist performs an oral cancer screening even though you don’t smoke. Cancer sneaks up on us!

Screening Mammography Redefined By John F. Arnold, MD, MBA

The goal of any breast screening program is to find cancer early and reduce false positives. The American College of Radiology Commission on Breast Imaging has performed a thorough review of the evidence that annual mammography screening starting at age 40 for women of average risk can decrease breast cancer mortality by about 40%. Benefits of screening also include tumors being found earlier and the ability to discover high-risk lesions earlier. Supported by Research Over 70% of cancers occur in dense breasts. Mammography has limitations in imaging dense breasts. The ASTOUND study is defined as adjunct screening with tomosynthesis or ultrasound in women with mammography negative dense breasts. This was a multicenter screening trial of tomosynthesis and adjunct ultrasound screening in women with dense breasts. Adjunct ultrasounds led to significantly higher incremental breast cancer detection, the rate per 1,000 screening mammograms was 7.1/1,000 screening exams for ultrasound and 4.0/1,000 screening exams for tomosynthesis. Three studies—European Asymptomatic Screening Study, SOMO•INSIGHT Clinical Study, and performance studies by Shane, et al—included adding 3-D

OutPatient Imaging is introducing 3-D automated whole breast ultrasound at its Atlanta location. automated whole breast ultrasound to screening mammography to improve the performance of mammographic interpretation. Adding 3-D automated whole breast ultrasound has shown a significant increase in invasive cancer detection with a nominal insignificant decrease in specificity. Eighty-five percent of cancers found with screening ultrasound are node negative invasive cancer. OPI is Leading The Way OutPatient Imaging is introducing 3-D automated whole breast ultrasound at its Atlanta location. Even better, OutPatient Imaging will be performing an automated 3-D screening breast ultrasound as an adjunct to all screening

mammograms with no additional cost to the patient during the introductory phase. Ultrasound is fully automated and takes approximately 30 seconds per breast. The exam requires no external compression other than the patient’s own body weight. The 3-D images generated from the ultrasound will be interpreted by the radiologist as an adjunct to the patient’s screening mammogram. Three-D automated breast ultrasound does not utilize ionizing radiation as tomosynthesis uses, therefore it can reduce the radiation exposure to the patient. OutPatient Imaging is proud of its commitment to women’s health and will continue to offer patients a choice for all of their imaging needs.

Just outside of Athens, Georgia and located in historic Greene County, visitors of Lake Oconee can choose to stay in adorable accommodations in town to explore the history still preserved, or book a suite at an upscale resort. The region offers cozy campgrounds, access to plenty of on-the-water activities, a renowned food and wine festival, outdoor concerts and more.

Toes in the Sand CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER

Whether jumping off the roof of a boathouse on private, pristine Lake Burton, water skiing between North Carolina and Georgia on blue-green Lake Chatuge, or taking a dip in Lake Rabun, these northern lakes offer postcard-worthy snapshots, and plenty of fun things to do. Perhaps most picturesque is the crystal clear aquamarine waters of Lake Blue Ridge. This family-friendly area offers access to picnic and campsite accommodations, plus a home base for bike rides, easy shoreline hikes, fishing, kayaking, paddleboards and more. Spend a day hiking, antiquing, visiting wineries and popping into unique eateries.

Take (Us) to The River The 93-mile Toccoa/Ocoee River runs from Tennessee into North Georgia and boasts roadside rafting headquarters every few miles for experienced (or more adventurous) rafters. The river also provides plenty of can’t-miss stops like the swinging bridge along The Benton MacKaye Trail. The rapids of the 25-mile-long Chattooga River begin near the tristate area where Georgia meets both North and South Carolina, and is considered to be one of the best whitewater runs in the world. Another worldly nod is the Niagara of the South, or as locals know it, Tallulah Falls. North Carolina’s Nantahala River offers rafters of all ages and experience levels 8 miles of sparkling water and varying rapids to tackle, as well as exhilarating Jeep tours, hiking, mountain biking and more. 72

On May 28, cheer on the fundraising and awareness arm of the initiative, Shepherd’s Men, as they complete the final leg of a seven-day run (covering 22K daily) starting in Chicago and ending in Atlanta to raise awareness for the 22 veterans’ deaths that occur by suicide each day in the U.S.

my best self Jennifer Webb “Today I will put myself first. At the tippy-top of the list—the kids can get themselves up for school, I will leave the dishwasher unemptied, and the clothes unfolded,” says Jennifer Webb, in an excerpt of her book, “Mom’s Soul Café.” When Webb penned the book in 2016, the realities of motherhood were often much more complicated than the images she saw in the social media postings of her friends. From a messy minivan to surviving summer break, the hilarious and chaotic experiences of the 47-year-old mom left her with the realization that to avoid mommy-burn out, she had to find inner peace. In her book, Webb, who is also a meditation leader at the Atlanta Center for Wellness, shares how the practice of mindfulness has enabled her to be a better mother to her children and a more Zen individual. By Rachel Miller

I’ve always been a very spiritual person, but meditation started after I had my children, Nathan, 12, and Jessie, 10. Honestly, I wasn’t taking motherhood very well. I knew I needed to approach things differently. By nature, I’m not a calm person. I’m actually very hyper and excited about life, which is great! I’ve never wanted to change who I am; I just wanted to become a more centered and mindful individual. I felt it would make me a more patient mother to my children.

What tips do you have for someone who wants to begin to practice mindfulness but doesn’t know where to start? I would recommend going to a guided meditation, if possible. Or listening to a recorded meditation. Find a recording that resonates with you. People say they can’t sit for an hour and that is understandable. Do it for 10 minutes or even three minutes. People say they can’t quit thinking, but no one said you are not supposed to think. In meditation, you think, but you come back to the breath. Mindfulness is not mystical. You don’t feel totally different. You just become more aware of yourself.

In what ways can “Mom’s Soul Café” inspire a stay-at-home mom or a working mom? I’ve always felt like the working mom is trying to carve out time for her family. However, the stay-at-home mom is always trying to carve out time for herself. There is guilt on both ends, so you really cannot win. It truly is a personal journey because everyone needs spirituality and everyone needs a center. Everyone needs a place they can go for themselves. Sometimes, that can be a spa, but sometimes, it just has to be where you are, right in that moment.

You write about the importance of being present with your children. What is the biggest distraction you work to avoid and how? Anxiety. Sometimes when I am with my kids for a long time, it seems like it’s never enough. They want to play games over and over again. For me, it can be overwhelming and tiring. I think every mother can relate to the fact that there comes a point, when you’re ready for “me” time. The reality is that children aren’t always ready for that, so that’s when I start to feel my anxiety. I’ve found that by surrendering to the moment, taking a deep breath and staying present when I may not want to be there, I’m able to be more mindful, which lowers my anxiety.

Who helps you be your “Best Self?” Besides my children, this might sound strange, but it’s authors. I love reading books on philosophy because I am living the lessons of these wise teachers. Two of my favorites are Thich Nhat Hanh’s book, “You are Here” and “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. To find out more about Jennifer and her journey, go to JenniferKWebb.com.
