Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2011

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management is proud to be a founding partner of Best Places to Work in Kentucky. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those companies who set a new standard of excellence for employee engagement and business success.
How We Did It! Kentucky continues to be a great place to live and work. Kentucky’s quality workforce and worldclass businesses are two of our most valuable resources. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program helps bring these resources together to ensure our leadership in the future economy. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky, conceived in 2004, is a celebration of elite employers who have proven that they know what it takes to create an environment where people love to come to work. The goal of Best Places to Work in Kentucky is to raise the bar among our state’s employers, creating excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace that will attract talented people for years to come. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program is open to all publicly or privately held organizations, either for-profit or notfor-profit. To be eligible for consideration, companies must have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky.
The Best Places to Work survey process was managed by Best Companies Group (BCG). BCG, an independent workplace excellence research firm, managed the registration process, conducted the twopart survey process, evaluated the data and ultimately selected the organizations that met the criteria to be considered the best. To go through the 2011 assessment process, companies needed to register by October 29, 2010. Part one of the assessment (three-quarters of each company’s score) involved a confidential 76 question Employee Engagement & Satisfaction Survey (EESS) which was used to evaluate the employees’ workplace experience and company culture. Part two of the assessment (onequarter of each company’s score) consisted of The BCG Employer Questionnaire (EQ), used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information. The combined data allowed the experts at BCG to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company. BCG’s workplace assessment experts determined which organizations

were good enough to make the list and then these employers were compared to one another and ranked within different size categories. Each company that participated received the BCG Employee Feedback Report summarizing the employee data collected through the employee survey process. In addition to the employee opinion data, the report also included transcribed employee written comments, as well as the Kentucky benchmarking data from the participating and winning companies. The Feedback Report will help each company understand their workforce better and equip them with the information to make improvements. The companies presented on the following pages are indeed innovators and set an example for other companies to follow. As you read their profiles, you’ll see the often unique ways in which these companies are able to help their employees, their businesses and their communities. Visit www.BestPlacesToWorkKY.com for more information or call Best Companies Group toll free at 1-877-455-2159.

President & CEO Kentucky Chamber
The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is pleased that so many companies in the Commonwealth hold such a strong commitment to their employees. We would like to congratulate those employers who go the extra mile in making their companies one of the “Best Places to Work in Kentucky.” We, at the Kentucky Chamber, are excited that 44 of the 65 companies to be named the “Best Places to Work” this year are members of our organization. From law firms to hospitals, this year’s list of winners encompasses a broad spectrum of services, and it is exciting to see that such a wide range of companies are helping the Chamber achieve its mission of making the Commonwealth a better place to live and work. In order to keep Kentucky’s economy thriving, we must be able not only to educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we must also entice those from out of state to work in the Commonwealth. Through Best Places to Work, you are able to measure your employees’ workplace satisfaction each year. You can then take these results and create positive measures that will, in the long run, help advance Kentucky. We applaud this year’s winners for your commitment to your employees and to the Commonwealth.

Independence Bank At Independence Bank, we believe a revolution in banking has to mean more than what goes on inside the bank itself. Which is why our employees and directors committed to build seven Habitat for Humanity houses in seven counties over seven years. It’s also why the Revolutionary Riders consisting of members of the senior management team rode over 3,000 miles to our twenty banking locations raising money and awareness for the American Cancer Society and proving their commitment to every employee. It’s doing revolutionary things like this that make Independence Bank a great place to work!

River Road Asset Management, LLC Genentech Creative Lodging Solutions Kentucky Employers’ Mutual Insurance 4 Stites & Harbison PLLC
Genentech is a top scorer in the category of Pay and Benefits in this year’s Best Places to Work employee survey. Jeff Uligian, director, explains Genentech’s corporate philosophy on this subject, “Everything we do at Genentech is motivated by a desire to make a difference in the lives of patients. We are proud to reward employees’ hard work with some of the most competitive and comprehensive benefit packages in the country.” Creative benefits that are developed from employee’s personal needs are what stand out most to employees. Genentech has found several out-of-the-box benefits solutions, “Above and beyond standard benefits, we offer an on-site fitness center, support for legal and family services, child and elder care and retailer discounts to name a few. All employees participate in a generous bonus and stock award program, but a company wide benefit that everyone looks forward to is a six week sabbatical that is earned after each six years of service. Employees use this time for personal and professional development and a well deserved rest!”
...Creative benefits that are developed from employee’s personal needs are what stand out most to employees... As presented at www.American-Business.org, reward structures that are fair, promote professional development and provide recognition for employees’ contributions to company success are associated with higher levels of job satisfaction and likely increase employee motivation. As our top scorers in the category have figured out, it is important to create a pay and benefits structure that are in line with company goals.

EMPLOYEE LEADERSHIP & PLANNING SURVEY
Large Company
A company’s leadership should ensure alignment of employee values and goals with those of the organization. This is a challenging task which requires integrity on behalf of the leaders and a genuine understanding of how the organization really functions. In the evaluation of leadership and planning, survey respondents were asked to rank employers on their understanding of long-term strategy, confidence in leadership, care for employee well-being, adequate planning and follow through of corporate and departmental objectives, and openness to input from employees.

At Software Information Systems, LLC, leaders are chosen very carefully. “When our executive team makes decisions to move people into leadership roles, many factors are taken into account,” explains Cecilia Wheeler, director of human resources, “Leaders at SIS are challenged to think both strategically and tactically, while drawing on their past experiences to improve overall performance.”
...leadership excellence comes from the melding of leadership skills and planning expertise... While finding good leaders is paramount, the next step is where leadership and planning come together. Leaders must communicate and model the plan to the rest of the organization. Each individual must have at least a rudimentary understanding of the plan and, most importantly, know how they support the plan’s mission and goals. Bob Mason, president of RLM Planning and Leadership, explains that leadership excellence comes from the melding of leadership skills and planning expertise, “I’ve seen organizations with detailed strategic plans that are not communicated well. The plans might as well not exist as the leaders have failed in their responsibility to make sure their subordinates know why they are important to the overall mission.” As the top scorers in Leadership and Planning have exemplified, leadership can happen with or without a plan, but great leadership requires a plan.

EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIP WITH SUPERVISOR SURVEY Property & Casualty
Relationship With Supervisor One of the most important relationships in the workplace is between employees and their immediate supervisors. Not only are goals and habits passed from supervisor to employee, but traits like attitude and zeal in a supervisor will spread, enlivening employees with a desire to excel. Survey respondents were asked to rank their supervisors on how fairly and respectfully they treat others, how well they handle work-related and personal issues, ability to give constructive criticism or praise, openness to hearing opinions or feedback, encouragement to develop to fullest potential, and trust.
TOP SCORERS IN RELATIONSHIP WITH SUPERVISOR 1 MassMutual Financial Group: The Kentucky/West Virginia Agency 2 Software Information Systems, LLC 3 River Road Asset Management, LLC 3 Connected Nation 4 Edward Jones
The culture and policies developed by a company that support the relationship between employees and their supervisors is critical to success. “Everyone at Connected Nation is encouraged to offer feedback, suggestions, and to participate in every level of discussion,” states Tracie Rotermann, human resources manager at Connected Nation, a top scorer in this category. “Our employees also know that their concerns and opinions are truly valued and we do everything we can to promote open and honest dialogue, from monthly companywide meetings, social events that encourage relationship development, to an open-door policy with all supervisors, who are encouraged to listen and incorporate staff feedback as appropriate.”
... Our employees also know that their concerns and opinions are truly valued...
Mass Mutual Financial Group: The Kentucky/West Virginia Agency also scored highly in the employee survey questions related to their Relationship with Supervisor. Respondents credit this success to “true open communication, which has built strong relationships and a team environment.” Mass Mutual depends on “open lines of communication between staff, management and independent advisors . . . supporting and promoting each person’s goals and accomplishments.” Kevin Collins, general agent at Mass Mutual “conveys his true concern and respect, and encourages everyone to reach their full potential.” As demonstrated by our top scoring companies in the area of Relationship with Supervisor, effective communication in the employee-supervisor relationship breeds trust and better understanding. This trust and better understanding is a hallmark for success in a Best Places to Work company.

EMPLOYEE ROLE SATISFACTION SURVEY
Role Satisfaction Matching the right person with the right job is as crucial to an organization’s success as it is to its employee satisfaction. The Role Satisfaction portion of the survey asks employees to rank the following: how well they like their work; whether they are given proper authority to make decisions; job security; realistic deadlines; feeling valued as part of a team; ability to maintain a reasonable balance between work and personal life; skills and abilities being used well; and whether they’ve been given a clear understanding of their job role and the importance of that role to the success of the organization.

Top scorers in this category have recognized that the employee brings strengths and attributes that are valued in meaningful and productive ways. Tawna Wright, human resources director at Independence Bank explains, “Community, to us, is about working together for the common good of our bank family. In order to continuously improve, we consistently request our employees’ feedback and take action based upon it. This is done with a 360 degree evaluation in which not only the employee is evaluated but they also get the opportunity to evaluate their management. To reinforce the team approach, we hold an annual ‘Five Things’ meeting to find out the top five things that should never change, that we should change, that the CEO should change, and projects we should take on.”
L
...career paths are flexible & designed to complement the unique skills of each associate... For River Road Asset Management, LLC, “Role Satisfaction is attributed to the firm’s competitive compensation strategy, tightknit, entrepreneurial culture, unique Collective Success operating philosophy, and the personal support offered to associates and their families. At River Road, career paths are flexible and designed to complement the unique skills of each associate. This flexibility greatly enhances job satisfaction and creates a more rewarding experience for both associates and the firm.” In a study of workplace support, role overload, and job satisfaction conducted by Robert Chou at the College of Social Work, University of South Carolina, Chou found that low job satisfaction is related to high turnover rates and lower quality of work. This study confirms what the Best Places to Work winners know and practice – a satisfied worker is ultimately at the heart of a successful company.
