How It Works
The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program, conceived in 2004, is a celebration of elite employers who have shown they understand exactly what it takes to create an environment where people love to come to work. Identifying and recognizing these employers of choice is a joint effort of several Kentucky partners led by the Kentucky SHRM State Council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce along with Best Companies Group. The goal of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky is to raise the bar among our state’s employers, creating a level of excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace that will attract talented people now and in the future. The program is open to all publicly or privately held organizations, for-profit and not-for-profit alike. To be eligible for consideration, companies must have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky.
The Best Places to Work in Kentucky survey process was managed by Best Companies Group, who evaluated the data collected from the participating companies and determined the final rankings.
Findings Report will help each company better understand their workforce and equip them with the tools they need to improve on their already solid foundations.
Part one of the assessment (three-quarters of each company’s score) consisted of a confidential employee survey (81 questions) used to evaluate the employees’ workplace experience. Part two of the assessment (one-quarter of each company’s score) consisted of an employer survey in which information was collected about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information. The two combined assessments allowed the experts at Best Companies Group to provide an in-depth analysis of the strengths and opportunities that exist in each company to build a better workplace.
The companies presented on the following pages are true innovators – companies that other firms use as benchmarks. As you read their profiles, you’ll get a feel for the various ways these companies are able to help their employees – and their businesses – succeed.
Each company that participated received an Assessment Findings Report summarizing the employee data collected. This report is each company’s “report card.” Not only is it rich with information about how the employees feel, it also includes averaged benchmarking data from the companies that made the list in Kentucky. In addition, companies were invited to spend 30 minutes with one of Best Companies Group’s analysts to review their results. The Assessment

MAGAZINE
Leading Businesses Create a Successful Kentucky The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management is proud to be a founding partner of Best Places to Work in Kentucky. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program identifies those companies who set the standard for employee engagement. Human resource professionals lead the business of people for Kentucky’s employers. Tough economic conditions both globally and in the Commonwealth have intensified the need to retain and attract the most skilled and talented employees. This is essential in order for business to succeed during and beyond the economic crisis. The partnership between human resource leaders and CEOs is more vital now than ever before. Together, we develop and implement innovative strategies that leverage employee engagement and job satisfaction, which in turn has proven to increase productivity and quality. Kentucky SHRM along with our 13 local SHRM chapters, provides ongoing educational and leadership opportunities for over 2,700 human resource professionals throughout the Commonwealth. These opportunities ensure that our HR leaders are prepared to contribute effective strategies that improve the bottom line. Kentucky SHRM is thrilled to recognize the best of the best in Kentucky. Enjoy reading the profiles of our top employers and feel free to call on them to find out more about their successful strategies. Kentucky SHRM. Engaging People. Leading Organizations. Advancing Kentucky. Congratulations to all of the 2009 Best Places to Work in Kentucky winning companies!
Trasee Whitaker, SPHR Chair, Kentucky SHRM State Council
Kentucky Companies Hold Strong Commitment to Their Employees The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is pleased that there are so many companies in the Commonwealth that hold such a strong commitment to their employees. We would like to congratulate those employers who go the extra mile in making their companies one of the “Best Places to Work in Kentucky.” We, at the Kentucky Chamber, are excited that 35 of the 55 companies to be named the “Best Places to Work” this year are members of our organization. From law firms to hospitals, this year’s list of winners encompasses a broad spectrum of services, and it is exciting to see that such a wide range of companies are helping the Chamber achieve its mission of making the Commonwealth a better place to live and work. In order to keep Kentucky’s economy thriving, we must be able to not only educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we must also entice those from out of state to work in the Commonwealth. Through Best Places to Work, you are able to measure your employees’ workplace satisfaction each year. You can then take these results and create positive measures that will, in the long run, help advance Kentucky. We applaud you for your commitment to your employees and to the Commonwealth. Congratulations!
Dave Adkisson President and CEO, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce

The first part of the formula (75 percent of each company’s score) consisted of an employee survey used to evaluate the employees’ workplace experiences. The second part of the formula (25 percent of each company’s score) consisted of an employer survey in which information was collected about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and general information. Frankfort Regional Medical Center Within the Hospital Corporation of America’s network of healthcare facilities, Frankfort Regional Medical Center is listed in the top four hospitals with the lowest employee turnover. That’s not surprising seeing as employees are given flexible schedules and the encouragement and tools needed to advance their careers. Many employees at the hospital enjoy the convenience of self-scheduling, and there is a no mandatory overtime policy that allows staff the freedom to pick up extra hours — but only if they want to. Not only does the company match its employees’ contributions to a retirement savings fund of their choice, but it contributes an additional nine percent independent of the employees’ contributions. Hospital employees also receive discounts to two childcare facilities located next to the hospital, and half the monthly membership fee for the local YMCA is picked up by the hospital as well. Though every employee reaps the benefits of such generosity, the hospital also rewards its most outstanding employees in many other ways, giving out gift cards, free lunches, prime parking spots and $500 bonuses.

And those who want to advance their careers through continuing education are given every opportunity to succeed. The hospital’s tuition reimbursement program gives employees up to $6,000 a year for continuing education expenses, plus it hands out scholarship money to further help its staff members pursue advanced degrees. Frankfort Regional Medical Center is also there to help when it comes time for an employee’s children to head off to college. Its Concern Student Loan Program allows employees to borrow up to $25,000 per year for all educationrelated expenses, and children of employees are eligible to try for one of HCA’s many scholarships. Last year $500,000 in scholarship money was given to the children of employees at HCA facilities.

At Edward Jones, your hard work is rewarded with more than just a paycheck. The company devotes 24 percent of its net profits — $127 million in 2007 — to profit sharing for associates who work at least 20 hours per week and have been there for at least six months. Associates have tremendous autonomy over their daily schedules and are given mentors to help make sure they succeed. Edward Jones is a financial services firm with more than 9,200 locations, the largest number of branch offices in the nation.
At Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC, staff members enjoy perks like pizza lunches and ice cream socials, discounted memberships to a local gym and free flu shots. Its mentor program benefits all new employees, and awards and special recognition are given to staff members throughout the year.
Stites & Harbison PLLC is one of those rare employers that pays 100 percent of its employees’ medical insurance coverage. It also pays 100 percent of the cost of life insurance and long-term and short-term disability insurance. If that’s not impressive enough, coverage begins on the first day of the month after employment; there is no mandatory 30-, 60- or 90-day waiting period for benefits to kick in. The Southeastern-based fullservice law firm also reimburses staff for 50 percent of any tuition paid for job-related educational programs.

Green River Area Development District
Bluegrass Community Hospital
Green River Area Development District’s business focus is on helping communities, and it makes sure its employees share that focus. GRADD allows employees to take paid time off for community service. When tornadoes or floods have struck the region, GRADD employees have used regular work time to help with relief efforts. Green River Area Development District is a regional planning agency assisting seven counties and 27 cities through community and economic development, social services, transportation planning and workforce development.
Bluegrass Community Hospital makes employee recognition a personal matter. It’s not a culture of mass e-mails or form letters; when a manager recognizes an employee, it’s with a personal note sent home for the employee’s family to read. All new employees are given handwritten greetings from their managers at their new hire orientations. And outstanding departments are rewarded with personalized baskets of treats to thank them for a job well done. Bluegrass Community Hospital is a 25-bed acute and skilled care hospital.
