Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2010

1

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management is proud to be a founding partner of Best Places to Work in Kentucky. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those companies who set a new standard of excellence for employee engagement and business success.

How We Did It! Kentucky continues to be a great place to live and work. Kentucky’s quality workforce and world-class businesses are two of our most valuable resources. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program helps bring these resources together to ensure our leadership in the future economy. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky, conceived in 2004, is a celebration of elite employers who have proven that they know what it takes to create an environment where people love to come to work. The goal of Best Places to Work in Kentucky is to raise the bar among our state’s employers, creating excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace that will attract talented people for years to come. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program is open to all publicly or privately held organizations, either for-profit or notfor-profit. To be eligible for consideration, companies must have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky.

The Best Places to Work survey process is managed by Best Companies Group (BCG). BCG, an independent workplace excellence research firm, manages the registration process, conducts the two-part survey process, evaluates the data and ultimately chooses the companies that met the score. To be considered for the 2010 assessment process, companies needed to register by October 30, 2009. Part one of the assessment (three-quarters of each company’s score) involves a confidential 76 question Employee Engagement & Satisfaction Survey (EESS) which is used to evaluate the employees’ workplace experience and company culture. Part two of the assessment (one-quarter of each company’s score) consisted of The BCG Employer Questionnaire (EQ), used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information. The combined data allowed the experts at BCG to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company. BCG’s workplace assessment experts determined who was good enough to make the list and they were compared to one another and ranked in different size categories.

Each company that participated received the BCG Employee Feedback Report summarizing the employee data collected through the employee survey process. In addition to the employee opinion data, the report also included transcribed employee written comments, as well as the Kentucky benchmarking data from the participating and winning companies. The Feedback Report will help each company understand their workforce better and equip them with the information to make improvements. The companies presented on the following pages are indeed innovators and the ones other companies use as benchmarks. As you read their profiles, you’ll see the often unique ways in which these companies are able to help their employees, and their businesses and their communities. The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is pleased that there are so many companies in the Commonwealth that hold such a strong commitment to their employees. We would like to congratulate those employers who go the extra mile in making their company one of the “Best Places to Work in Kentucky.” We, at the Kentucky Chamber, are excited that 40 of the 64 companies to be named the “Best Places to Work” this year are members of our organization. From law firms to hospitals this year’s list of winners encompases a broad spectrum of services, and it is exciting to see that such a wide range of companies are helping the Chamber achieve its mission of making the Commonwealth a better place to live and work. In order to keep Kentucky’s economy thriving, we must be able to not only educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we must also entice those from out of state to work in the Commonwealth. Through Best Places to Work, you are able to measure your employees’ workplace satisfaction each year. You can then take these results and create positive measures that will, in the long run, help advance Kentucky. We applaud you for your commitment to your employees and to the Commonwealth. Congratulations!

Adding up to

Vision for a sustainable future in agriculture Improving animal health and performance by adding nutritional value to food production In 2010 Alltech, a global animal health company, turns 30 years old. For three decades we have built our company on providing natural, nutritional ingredients to improve the quality of the food chain. As we ponder the future we look to create ways to combat the issues facing the food and feed industry and to make a meaningful contribution to our society. We are guided by our ACE principle, meaning our technologies must improve the health of the Animal, be safe for the Consumer, all while being Environmentally friendly. These ideals have led farms to become more sustainable while creating healthy, nutritious food to feed the world. At Alltech we are preparing to secure a sustainable future for the agricultural industry through four key efforts: 1. A dedication to nutrigenomics, a branch of science that will revolutionize the way we feed for optimal health and performance in animals and humans alike. 2. Training programs for our staff to improve their skills and our core competencies. 3. Educational initiatives that reach beyond our own personnel to the wider community. 4. New product and process technologies that save energy, costs and waste, while improving performance and contributing to the triple bottom line: people, profits and planet.

Creating an environment where people love to come to work requires investing in your employees and valuing their feedback. Best Places to Work in Kentucky honors the top scorers in each category of the Employee Engagement and Satisfaction portion of our survey process. Employees were surveyed with questions pertaining to eight core focus areas of employee engagement and satisfaction. Organizations with the highest scores are noted.

The categories are as follows: LEADERSHIP AND PLANNING A company’s leadership should ensure alignment of employee values and goals with those of the organization. This is a challenging task which requires integrity on behalf of the leaders and a genuine understanding of how the organization really functions. In evaluation of leadership and planning, survey employees were asked to rank employers on their understanding of long-term strategy, confidence in leadership, care for employee well-being, adequate planning and follow through of corporate and departmental objectives, and openness to input from employees. Trilogy Health Care Services, LLC

CORPORATE CULTURE AND COMMUNICATIONS Corporate culture is the summation of all the things that make an organization unique, and a truly unique organization requires excellent communication across all channels. For the Corporate Culture and Communications portion of the survey, respondents were asked to rank employers on the frequency and openness of corporate communications, willingness to disclose financial standings, ability to generate a spirit of cooperation, and other targeted questions. Trilogy Health Care Services, LLC

PAY AND BENEFITS While money may not be the key to happiness, a rewarding salary and solid benefits package makes good employees feel as appreciated as they are necessary. Survey employees were asked to rank their employer on fair pay for the work performed, overall satisfaction with the organization’s benefits package, vacation or paid time off, sick leave, health care, retirement, life insurance and disability benefits, and tuition reimbursements. Appalachian Wireless

OVERALL EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

RELATIONSHIP WITH SUPERVISOR

An engaged employee is a hard-worker, receiving satisfaction from his or her work. Employee Engagement was measured by asking survey respondents to rank their employer on overall satisfaction and the employee’s willingness to give extra effort to help the company succeed, likelihood of continuing their career with the company for at least two more years, and likelihood of recommending the company’s products/ services and employment. Kingsbrook Lifecare Center

One of the most important relationships in the workplace is between employees and their immediate supervisors. Not only are goals and habits passed from supervisor to employee, but traits like attitude and zeal in a supervisor will spread, enlivening employees with a desire to excel. Survey respondents were asked to rank their supervisors on how fairly and respectfully they treat others, how well they handle work-related and personal issues, ability to give constructive criticism or praise, openness to hearing opinions or feedback, encouragement to develop to fullest potential, and trust. Trilogy Health Care Services, LLC

ROLE SATISFACTION Matching the right person with the right job is as crucial to an organization’s success as it is to its employee satisfaction. The Role Satisfaction portion of our survey asks employees to rank the following: how well they like their work; whether they are given proper authority to make decisions; job security; realistic deadlines; feeling valued as part of a team; ability to maintain a reasonable balance between work and personal life; skills and abilities being used well; and whether they’ve been given a clear understanding of their job role and the importance of that role to the success of the organization. Trilogy Health Care Services, LLC

WORK ENVIRONMENT The right work environment can boost employee satisfaction, production and ingenuity, all of which help to make a healthy work environment for employees and employers alike. For this portion of our survey respondents were asked to rank their employers on physical working conditionsthings like lighting, temperature control, cleanliness, noise control, and safety. Employment Plus, Inc.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT A properly trained employee is a fullyfunctioning employee. For the training and development portion of the survey employees were asked to rank their employer on adequacy of initial and on-going training, adequacy of information, equipment and resources, clearly explained expectations for advancement, training or experiences to help explore other possible opportunities within the company, and trust in fair opportunities for increased pay and promotion consideration. Trilogy Health Care Services, LLC

In today’s economy it’s easy to believe that companies would “back off ” the necessary and important measures that it takes to be a best place to work. Hard times and strained budgets make it tougher then ever for companies to treat employees well. The good news is that many companies in Kentucky do it anyway. Extraordinary by definition, Kentucky’s Best Places to Work have pushed their employee-pleasing ways further than ever in the past year. They are blazing a trail for all organizations wanting to thrive in today’s - and tomorrow’s - economic climate. Two new organizations on the list have exemplified that “fighting spirit.” Lexington Clinic and Creative Lodging Solutions are both companies that have participated in the past and utilized the BPWK assessment process to learn areas of strength and weakness in their companies. They have used that knowledge learned from the survey to grow and enhance their strategic planning and policies. Dr. Andrew Henderson from the Lexington Clinic explains, “We engage in the survey and the employee communication of it not necessarily to win but to learn - learn what we do well and not so well, and , more importantly, what we can do better.” These two companies never took a past low ranking in the survey as a failure. Any and all scores are considered knowledge providing the basis to learn what could make them great. And that is a rare opportunity.

IS YOUR COMPANY

a best place to work?

Fischer Homes

Craig Baughman, Executive Vice President at Creative Lodging Solutions, says that having the survey responses provides a “framework to build a best place to work.” Baughman explains, “The survey questions are so specific that we know how people really feel and can make sure we address all those feelings - individually, by department and corporate-wide.” By focusing on staying true and constant to those areas that score well, and focusing specific attention and direction to those areas that score poorly, these companies have incorporated the BPWK assessment process into their overall strategic planning, employee communications and budgeting. The Lexington Clinic has been engaged in a corporate-wide strategic planning initiative. Dr. Henderson reveals that the criticisms in the survey helped to guide the focus of that strategic planning. With the understanding of where the employees stood on critical focus areas, employee engagement was concentrated on areas of greatest need. The results of these organizations’ past surveys have been shared company-wide. In both organizations, the communication of the results are as important as the results themselves. By engaging employees in coming up with solutions, a shared sense of purpose was created. Dr. Henderson shares that it is important to “take this discussion out of the management level and get people talking to gain important information on how to do better.”

In 1980 Fischer Homes was founded on a single guiding principle; create the best total new home solution and build an exceptional customer experience. Today, this core value remains our guiding business model. With nearly 100% customer satisfaction, builder of the year and marketer of the year, we are specialists in providing for every chapter of our customers’ housing needs. Fischer Homes offers a variety of single family, condominium and patio home designs in Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis. Thousands of stories have been written and celebrated in Fischer Homes.

Best Places to Work

Ultimately, using this information is the key component. In the case of Lexington Clinic and Creative Lodging Solutions, these organizations have used the Best Places to Work survey as a learning tool to spark meaningful change and move the organization forward. “The communication and sharing of the results really put us in creative mode,” states Baughman, “once you start addressing one thing it leads to another.”
