the river’s rules:

a misadventure on the snake

“Never let anyone else row your boat,” we had said. “It only leads to disaster.”

So we jinxed it from the start.

The adventure du jour was an evening float on the Snake River through Grand Teton National Park with my partner, my parents and visiting cousins.

The stretch we chose is notoriously tricky.

The calm water puts people at ease, but the river is braided and lined with dangerous strainers (obstructions in the river that allow water to pass but block larger objects such as boats and people). These seemingly innocent obstructions can, and have, lead to fatalities on the river.

Still, our late start was no cause for alarm.

My partner — the captain — had rowed this stretch of river countless times.

Wildfire smoke choked the mid-August sky.

We stopped for a swim and a snack as the sun floated west, painting the sky in orange and red.

Then, my partner gave up the oars.

Our temporary captain was at least as experienced on the river, but this 16-foot raft was unfamiliar and heavier than he was used to.

It all happened in a few short seconds, but I still see it in slow motion. The raft floated

into a strainer and was pinned against a tree. From the raft’s high side, we watched the contents of the boat float in the water around us, and then away from us: a cooler; dry bags full of phones, cameras, wallets and keys; clothes we had shed; life vests we couldn’t be bothered with to wear. They would do us no good now.

We got lucky.

All six of us fit on the tree’s huge trunk.

Teton County Search and Rescue was poised and ready to save us from this precarious perch. But without the weight of six bodies (and their possessions), the raft righted itself. Our captain was able to quickly maneuver back into the main channel as we all jumped back into the boat. We were off the tree and safe.

But darkness was falling. Five miles still separated us from our final destination — at least an hour’s row.

The river ahead was interwoven; navigation is tricky even in broad daylight.

Call it survival instincts or adrenaline, but our captain’s other four senses kicked into high gear. He rowed through dusk into darkness, guided by sound and memory. A Search and Rescue volunteer met us at the takeout to ensure we had made it safely.

This story has a happy ending. We even

recovered most of our lost belongings, found floating in eddies by friendly strangers and acquaintances.

I would love to chalk this all up to bad luck, but that would be insincere.

So what can we learn? Adventures of any size can go wrong in the blink of an eye to even the most prepared parties. All it takes is a second of indecision, inattention or false security. Our combined experience on the river likely saved us, but there are

plenty of things we did wrong — we left too late. We took off our life vests. We didn’t plan for an emergency, so we had no lights or first aid supplies.

A few extra precautions can go a long way.

Whether you’re on the river or the trails, it’s best to prepare for the worst and expect the best.

20 Here’s how: Be prepared to scrap your adventure or have a Plan B if conditions change. Remember, time is a condition! Late starts happen; they might just require a smaller adventure.

Every pack or dry bag should include basic emergency goods: light, warmth, food, water, first aid and navigation tools.

Backcountry Zero has complete packing lists on its website to help guide you.

And if things do take a turn for the worse, Teton County Search and Rescue is there.

You can call or text 911 to reach them, or you can use their app, BackcountrySOS, to send your status and location to emergency personnel.

Some misadventures make for good stories, but this is a cautionary tale. These rivers and trails don’t care about your plans or your experience. They demand respect and attention.

Give them that, and you’ll have a good story to take home with you. But a lesson is a useful souvenir, too.

Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return, and where to call if you don’t.

Know your limits of swimmers rescue and self rescue on whitewater rivers. Know when and how to swim for an eddy.

NEVER BOAT ALONE. Be sure your whitewater/boating skills and experience are equal to the river and the conditions.

Carry a first aid kit and know how to use it. Learn or review medical aid responsibilities and CPR.

Wear a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) at all times when you are in or near the river.

Never run a rapid unless you can see a clear path through it. Watch out for new snags after winter and spring floods.

Recipe: Fueling for Mountain Fun

Whether on trails or snow, the people of Jackson thrive outdoors. As a community of athletes, we are constantly tuning, tweaking or replacing our gear to take us faster and further into the landscape that surrounds us. However, what about finetuning our bodies to become trail running/ mountain biking/skiing superheroes?

While there’s a lot that goes into feeling stronger recreating in the mountains, there is one simple tweak that can seriously improve performance.

Nutrition is one of the most important components of training that is often overlooked. Fueling appropriately can help you achieve King/Queen of the Mountain status, or simply feel good about your effort. Focusing on pre- and post-workout meals and snacks is a great first step toward fine-tuning your nutrition.

Which foods and how much to eat depends on the type, duration and intensity of your workout. However, a good rule of thumb is to eat a complete meal containing carbs, protein and healthy fat 2-3 hours before exercise. Depending on the timing of your workout, that timeline may not be achievable. In that case, you can still eat a decent pre-workout meal or snack within a shorter window of time. Keep in mind that the closer you eat to the start of your workout, the smaller and simpler your meal or snack should be. If you are eating 30-60 minutes before your workout, choose foods that are easy to digest like simple carbs.

After a workout, your body needs to build up glycogen stores and repair and regrow muscle proteins. Eating the right nutrients after you exercise is essential for these processes. The two most important macronutrients after a workout are carbs and protein. Eating a meal filled with these crucial nutrients will ensure optimal recovery and allow you to get after it in the mountains the next day.

If your workout starts within 2-3 hours: During this time frame, you want to consume a meal with carbs, protein and healthy fats. Try grabbing an omelet from the Virginian, a grain bowl from Persephone or the rendezvous bowl from Cultivate Cafe.

If your workout starts within an hour: My favorite meals containing mostly simple carbs include a Pearl Street bagel with a small amount of peanut butter or cream cheese, a fruit smoothie from Healthy Being Juicery or a pastry from Picnic.

Looking to make something at home? Try my favorite pre-workout PB&J smoothie.

INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup frozen blueberries 1 frozen banana 1 tbsp peanut or almond butter 2 handfuls spinach 1 cup soy milk DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until mixed. Top with granola, seeds or fresh fruit!

My favorite post-workout meals include a sandwich from Creekside Market or Sweet Cheeks Meats, any noodle or rice dish at Teton Thai, a burrito from Pica’s Mexican Taqueria or Chowmein noodles from Everest Momo Shack.

Looking to cook something up at home?

Try this super easy Power Grain Bowl* recipe: INGREDIENTS 1 lemon, zest and juice 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp honey Salt and pepper 1 can (5-oz) tuna in water, drained 1 cup cooked barley (if gluten-free use brown or wild rice) 1 small bell pepper, cored and chopped 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped 1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped DIRECTIONS Prepare barley or other grain ahead of time according to package directions.

Let cool. In a bowl, whisk together zest (if desired), juice, Dijon, oil and honey. Season with salt and pepper. Add tuna and stir to coat. Add remaining ingredients and toss. Serve cold or at room temperature. *adapted from Self Magazine

By Emily Simpson In a valley like Jackson Hole with so much to do, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of constant activity. As we approach summer and the days become longer, there’s a feeling that we need to cram as much into our days as humanly possible. As a result, it’s common for individuals, both residents and visitors, to feel a sense of burnout. To successfully meet the demands of our increasingly stressful world, it is essential to attend to not only our physical health, but also our psychological, spiritual and social needs, too.

That’s where self-care comes in. This trending buzzword has actually been used by mental health professionals for decades to recharge and maintain effectiveness in their work with clients.

In the same way, athletes use rest days in order to regain energy levels and build endurance. Self-care is essential to giving our bodies and minds the breaks they need in order to be our best selves from sun up to sun down. It is a time set aside each day to prioritize ourselves, so that we can be better equipped to handle life’s daily stressors.

Below are five ways to incorporate self-care into your busy schedule.

5 Self-Care Ideas in Jackson Hole Enjoy a walking meditation by the Snake River Levee/Emily’s Pond.

This popular walking route is a flat, scenic trail alongside the Snake River. Walking meditation involves walking slowly back and forth while you meditate. Instead of focusing on your breath as in traditional, seated meditation, you pay attention to the sensations of your feet as you take each step. When your mind begins to wander, turn your attention back to your feet and the feeling of the ground beneath you. Continue the meditation for at least ten minutes, walking at different paces, and observe how these changes feel. At the end of the meditation, enjoy a few deep breaths before you continue on with your day.

Art is a great way to increase creativity and mindfulness.

Often, the focus necessary to create art helps one to center themselves and be more present. The Art Association of Jackson Hole offers a number of incredible classes for all ages from painting to pottery and everything in between.

If you’re just starting to explore your creativity, beginner classes are a great way to learn the basics and get to know a medium. Intermediate and advanced classes are offered to practice new techniques and hone your skills. The best part? Grab a cup of tea or coffee with a friend.

For some, self-care looks less about time alone and more about social time with friends. Drinking a warm beverage calms the nervous system and can also give you the chance to catch up with a loved one. The Teton County Public Library has thousands of books, audiobooks and movies for children, teens and adults to check-out. The library is also a great place to learn more about events and happenings in the community. Find a spot by a window, cozy up on a big chair and relax into a good read.

growing against all odds high alpine farming at huidekoper ranch

Though the views around Jackson Hole are ripe with beauty, the same can’t always be said for fresh produce.

The arid and rocky environment of the Tetons, as well as the cold winters, have historically made growing fruits and vegetables very difficult. However, farmers and ranchers have worked hard to learn from the land and grow food and raise healthy animals despite the elemental barriers. One such farm is Huidekoper Ranch, located about one mile from the base of Teton Pass, that successfully provides fresh produce to Teton Valley.

The Huidekoper (pronounced highdee-coo-per) Ranch has been in the Huidekoper family since the 1950s when Virgina and Jim Huidekoper bought the land after they married.

Preceded in death by her husband, Virginia passed away in 2010. Now,

her granddaughter, Claire Fuller, and her brother, Nate Fuller, own the ranch along with a few other family members.

Nate, Claire and her husband Brent Tyc, manage the property together, with Tyc taking the role as the ranch/ farm manager. Although the farm's first season was 2016, the family has boarded horses for more than 30 years on the property’s 140 acres.

Most of Huidekoper’s vegetables are sold to local restaurants. Calico is their biggest buyer along with Persephone, Persephone West Bank, Coelette, Local, Trio, Healthy Being Juicery, Cultive Café, and Snake River Grill.

They also sell wholesale to Slow Food in the Tetons Farmstand and online marketplace. Produce from Huidekoper can also be found at their booth at the People’s Market every Wednesday evening throughout the summer.

Regenerative growing: Tyc pulls from a variety of agriculture techniques, including the biointensive method and regenerative farming practices. Tyc follows the methodology of regenerative agriculture but applies it to the specific needs and challenges Huidekoper faces. Regenerative agriculture describes a variety of sustainable techniques, that when combined, mitigate climate change by growing plants and raising livestock in a way that moves the carbon dioxide into the soil.

While Huidekoper doesn’t have livestock yet, they utilize a lot of the techniques from regenerative farming, such as the no till methods, minimal inputs and making their own compost. They also use organic alfalfa meal and kelp meal.

“We have just one-third of an acre of growing space, so to maximize productivity on that [space] I set up a pretty detailed planting calendar each year. I basically never have soil that’s

sitting empty,” says Tyc. “From the start of May to the end of May, I’ll fill up the beds, and then every bed will have something in it for the rest of the season.”

Rather than growing crops that need a full season to mature, Tyc focuses on fast growing, quick to harvest crops that yield a high poundage per square foot, like salad mix, arugula, baby lettuce, mustard greens, radishes and baby turnips. They also grow microgreens in a shed and tomatoes in a larger greenhouse space near the outdoor plots.

“The greenhouse was a wedding gift from my in-laws,” shared Tyc. It is now home to the tomato crop that includes beef steaks and saladettes. Almost all of the tomatoes Huidekoper harvests are sold to Calico.

In order to maximize every square inch of space, Tyc interplants in the beds, with crops like lettuce and bush beans, allowing him to get a harvest while the tomatoes are still growing.

High alpine growing: The growing season is short in Jackson Hole. Depending on the year, the last frost can occur between May and July, and the first frost can be as early as August.

“We’ve had frost every time of the year; that’s why I focus on the fast growing hearty crops,” he said.

Those crops include arugula, baby lettuce, head lettuce, fennel, leaf broccoli, radishes and turnips.

“Pretty much everything I grow can withstand a little frost for a night or two,” Tyc said. “The only two things I do outside that are kind of sensitive [to frost] is summer squash and zucchini.”

Organic: While they follow their own set of strict farming guidelines and only use organic seeds and compost, Huidekoper isn’t certified organic and doesn’t plan to be.

“Organic agriculture can still be industrial agriculture,” Tyc said. “A 10,000-acre strawberry farm in California that’s certified organic isn’t really the solution to the problem. To me it's all about small-scale local or regional production and building healthy, strong, resilient soil is way more important. You don’t try to grow a plant; you try to build the soil and let the plants do their thing.”

Brent’s favorite crop? Carrots.

“Something about our soil here in Wilson, the glacial till and this bench we are on grows amazing carrots,” he explained.

“I think we have some of the best tasting carrots around.”

While expansion always seems to be on Tyc’s mind, he is calculated and wants to maintain the quality of his crops in a space that is manageable for his small team. Two employees are moving on to the property this summer, opening up more opportunities for the small farm.

“I still have a vision to bring animals in, but it’s just a matter of time and making it happen,” Tyc said.

Huidekoper has the possibility to expand to five acres, an agreement that was arranged through the Jackson Hole Land Trust since the property is part of a conservation easement. But working more land means more hands will be needed and with the current workforce shortage across the valley, Tyc isn’t rushing into anything. His goal is to grow the farm at a manageable pace and create healthy soil that, in turn, grows delicious and fresh produce for the community.

“People are starting to go with this smallscale agriculture system and to me that’s more and more what the future of food needs to be,” Tyc said.

ISTORY IN THE HOLE THE STORY BEHIND JACKSON HOLE LANDMARKS

In the summer of 1872, a group of travelers named a surprising number of places in Jackson Hole and Yellowstone.

River Division of the expedition that left their mark 150 years with several place names you’ll still recognize today.

The first Hayden Expedition explored the Yellowstone area in 1871, producing a report with iconic images by painter Thomas Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson. The written reports and inspiring images helped sway public support for the Yellowstone Protection Act. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the protection act making Yellowstone the first national park.

For thousands of years, Yellowstone and the Teton region were populated

by American Indians. These lands were a part of the Shoshone and Bannock tribes’ homelands, and today 27 tribes are associated with the greater Yellowstone area. It’s important to remember that the Hayden Expedition’s place names supplanted most American Indian names that had existed for millennia.

The second Hayden Expedition was commissioned in the same year to complete a geological survey of the newly declared Yellowstone National Park, as well as the area south of the park extending to the Tetons. It was the Snake

Euro-American explorers tended to name places after famous and influential people of their time, as well as themselves, as the Lewis and Clark Expedition had done in 1804-1806 when they journeyed from the Mississippi to Columbia Rivers.

JENNY AND LEIGH LAKES The second Hayden Expedition of 1872 returned to Yellowstone and broadened their explorations to the Teton range, splitting into two companies to cover the vast territory. The Snake River Division planned to start from the south and move north along the Snake to join Hayden at the Madison River.

A group of about 38 people left from Fort Hall, Idaho, on July 12, 1872, to meet their guides Beaver Dick Leigh and his Eastern Shoshone wife, Jenny, along with their four children. The expedition would later name two, now wildly popular lakes, after these valuable guides: Jenny and Leigh Lakes.

BRADLEY AND TAGGART LAKES Led by James Stevenson, the Snake River Division included a number of people whose names remain recognizable today. The chief geologist for the group was Frank H. Bradley, who brought his assistant William Rush Taggart.

According to Jackson Hole Historical Society researcher and writer Steve Morriss, much of the information about the surveyors’ time in the Tetons comes from Bradley’s official geological report and Taggart’s description of the survey called, “Wonders of Yellowstone,” as well as a letter Taggart wrote home.

Two now-famous hiking destinations in Grand Teton National Park, Bradley and Taggart Lakes, bear the names of these survey geologists.

PHELPS LAKE The division arrived on the west side of the Tetons on July 24 and camped in Teton Canyon with two prospectors. One of them was also a notable hunter named George Phelps. The book A Place Called Jackson Hole credits Beaver Dick with telling the surveyors that Phelps was the first white man to see and report a specific lake. The surveyors named that lake, located at the mouth of what is now Death Canyon, Phelps Lake.

The group soon decided to attempt to climb the tallest of the Teton peaks on July 29, according to the book The Grand Controversy by Orrin H. and Lorrain G. Bonney. Twelve of the group members attempted to climb the Grand, including Bradley, Taggart and Nathaniel P. Langford—the first superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. Langford and Stevenson claimed to have reached the top of the peak, which they afterwards named Mount Hayden. However, without evidence of their ascent left behind on the summit, the climb was not ultimately credited and the name didn’t stick.

MT. LEIDY While Bradley was waiting at the saddle on the Grand for Langford and Stevenson to return from climbing, he noted a prominent peak across the valley. He named it Mount Leidy in his geologist’s report after Professor Joseph Leidy, an “anatomist” on the expedition.

Meanwhile, expedition photographer William Henry Jackson took two assistants and his mule, Old Molly, through steep terrain to Table Mountain, where he took the first known photographs of the Tetons from the west side of the range. As documented in A Place Called Jackson Hole, Jackson spent most of the day making 8x10inch, 11x14-inch, and stereoscopic negatives. (see the photo on page 73) On August 2, 1872, the Snake River Division left the camp and traveled to Madison Valley in Yellowstone to meet Hayden’s division. Taggart wrote in his journal that the two parties, after nearly two months of separation, reached their meeting place within three hours of each other and were camped only two miles apart.

MT. MORAN After a month of exploring Yellowstone’s major geyser basins, the Snake River Division turned south again. As they journeyed, they named several Yellowstone features including Shoshone Lake, Lewis Falls and Bechler’s River before finally reaching what is now Grand Teton National Park. Along the way, the expedition also named the impressive peak Mount Moran after the painter Thomas Moran, although he was not on the 1872 expedition.

In just one summer, the Southern Division of the Hayden Geological Survey of the Territories influenced the names of some of the most well-known locations in the Tetons and Yellowstone today.
