A BRAND NEW HOME FOR BEST OF JACKSON HOLE Words Olaus Linn

ED ITO R’ S NOT E

We had a vision for a guide that would celebrate the folks who work hard to make their lives here.

How do you know when something is the best? These days, if we are visiting a new city, most of us turn to the internet to tell us where to get a cup of coffee or a hamburger. Ratings systems and popularity algorithms give us rankings of everything imaginable wherever we are. The results are pretty good - you can generally trust that if a restaurant has a high rating on Yelp it’s going to be decent. But these ratings do lack something fundamental: local knowledge. You’re never going to find that perfect hole-in-the-wall breakfast spot or classic dive bar looking at Google Maps. What you really need is a local to slip you some secret insider tips.

the brand-new bestofjacksonhole.com website. But the Buckrail team didn’t want to stop there. They brought me and my experienced magazine editorial and design staff on board to help bring to fruition a Best of Jackson Hole print publication. We had a vision for a different kind of guide to Jackson Hole: one created by and for the locals who live here. A guide that would highlight the hidden gems of the valley, celebrate the folks who work hard to make their lives here, and inspire readers to have experiences that they would never have found through TripAdvisor. We set out to capture a little bit of the magic of living in this place year round and share it with you.

Enter the Best of Jackson Hole competition. Every year since 2007, the Jackson Hole community has cast their votes for their favorite yoga instructors, artists, sandwich joints, and bike shops. Across 120 categories and hundreds of businesses, the cream of the crop rises to the top every time. This year there were over 240,000 votes cast by Jackson locals during the voting period in February. When the dust settled we awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze wins to over 300 businesses and individuals. Chosen by the people for the people: these are the Best of Jackson Hole.

So without further ado, welcome to the Best of Jackson Hole 2019 Locals Guidebook. This is Issue 1 of what will be an annual publication. It is packed to the brim with awards given out by the people who live here, along with stories that expand on the insight of those awards. We have designed this guide to be the starting point of your adventures in Jackson Hole and we hope cracking it open will help you get off the beaten path while visiting the Tetons. Who you see in these pages are our friends and neighbors, companies we’ve worked with and worked for, and people who have contributed enormous amounts to the fabric of Jackson Hole. Highlighted are many of our personal favorite spots; places we’ve had birthday parties, first dates, and wakes. This is a slice of our very own vibrant little community, which is both sustained–and strained by–the popularity of this place. We hope you’ll support these folks while you’re here. It takes the creativity, passion, and the hard work of everyone who lives here to keep making Jackson Hole a great place to visit and the best place to call home. -Olaus Linn

What you are holding in your hands is something completely new. Prior to this year the competition was operated by the local alternative weekly newspaper Planet Jackson Hole, and the results were published as a special edition of the paper once a year. This past summer stewardship of the contest passed to another local source for news: Buckrail. With Buckrail’s digital mastery, the voting process for Best of Jackson Hole this year was bigger and smoother than ever, and the results now have a permanent online home at

Jenna Mahaffie Like just about everyone else, Jenna moved to the area with an intent to stay for 3 months, but after 5 years of romping around the Tetons, she now calls Jackson home. When she’s not pushing pixels as a graphic designer and copywriter, you can find her somewhere in Phelps lake with a wetsuit and goggles, exploring the depths of the Snake River with a snorkel, or gracefully embarrassing herself on the Cabin Fever story slam stage.

Julie Fustanio Kling Julie Fustanio Kling is a freelance writer, yogi and ski instructor who teaches “snowga” - inhale rise, exhale turn. Her mindfulness practice began in New York City 18 years ago. Since then she has helped launch Teton Spirit Connection, a wellness magazine, and sixminutesdaily.com, a website and app to help people develop a daily practice of breath, positive intentions and gratitude. She is a graduate of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism and Boston College.

Aaron Davis Ben Gavelda Writer and photographer Ben Gavelda has deep roots in the snowboarding, mountain biking and outdoor worlds where’s documented everything from expeditions to Chilean Volcanoes, to profound interviews with the sports’ most prolific professionals. After a decade plus career in media Gavelda is now planted in building as a Project Superintendent/Manager for Jackson Hole Contracting. He wrote and photographed the piece on the best of biking for this issue.

Tory Cameron Tory moved to Jackson hole in her early 20s, keeping true to a pact made with her cousin when they were 12 years old. She loves everything about the Jackson culture, but her most precious times are spent running along mountain peaks and eating potato chips with her yellow lab named Keela.

Aaron Davis is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and member of bands Screen Door Porch and Aaron Davis & the Mystery Machine. He has been covering the Teton County music scene as a journalist-photographer since 2005. Aaron released his ninth album and second solo record, The Meander, on June 21. AaronDavisMusic.com.

Emlie Newman Emile is a writer, snowboarder, and outdoor generalist based in Jackson. She is interested in the intersection of environmental science and storytelling. As well as the power of conversation to bridge worlds and transform our relationship to the land and one another. When she’s not roaming the surrounding mountains she’s soaking up solitude in their shadow.

Shannon Sollitt Shannon Sollitt grew up in Jackson under the watchful eye of the Tetons. Wyoming shaped her into an outdoorswoman, but a love for language and the human condition compels her to write.

Roads The constant buzz of ratcheting freewheels and laughter rolls down the road. Kids, couples, and characters in costumes carve across the two lanes of open asphalt. A carefree calm carries on, as there are no vehicles for miles. Cruisers, carbon fiber rigs, trailers, and townies roll along this snow-banked path as the Tetons loom overhead. For a few sweet weeks in early spring Grand Teton National Park (Bronze–Best Biking pg. 12) is a haven for cycling as roads are cleared of snow and open only to bikes. The weather, however, can be fierce. Yet even when cars begin filling the road, GTNP boasts more separated cycling paths than any other national park in the country. Road riding is not the usual asphalt-only affair here in the Tetons. Car-less bike paths, old railroad grade, dirt roads, and pavement make up the hard surface riding options around the valley. What this rural nook of the mountain west might lack in traditional road riding it makes up for in miles of paved paths, varied routes, and lonely country roads. A lot has changed since Jackson’s first fourmile bike path was built in 1996. The Jackson area now boasts 67 miles of car-less pathways and has

garnered national attention and recognition for its two-wheeled infrastructure. Those individuals timid of tackling too many miles can utilize the one-way bike rentals from Hoback Sports (Silver–Best Bike Shop pg.15) to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which is an easy 12 mile ride. While you’re out in the Village, Teton Thai (Gold–Best Asian Cuisine pg. 40) or The Handlebar (Bronze–Best Après Scene pg. 54) are well worth a stop for fuel and relaxation. On the west side of Teton Pass, the path from Victor, Idaho, to Driggs is made up of quiet farm roads and the old Union Pacific Railway gravel route. Another choice route is Ski Hill Road, which climbs from Driggs up to Grand Targhee Resort under striking views of the western flank of the Grand Teton. More options are in store with a paved bike path from Victor to the top of Teton Pass in the works, alongside many more connections to fulfill the 180-mile Greater Yellowstone Trail. From Fall Creek Road to Ski Hill Road, Antelope Flats and the old rail gravel grind there’s no shortage of twowheeled tours around the Tetons.

Pedal Powered Tetons JACKSON’S FAVORITE ROAD AND MOUNTAIN BIKING Words & Photos by Ben Gavelda

As the season’s snowfall fades away, the paths and trails of the Tetons come alive with bikes. In a bike seat at this slower cyclical pace the landscape unfolds intimately. Free from a vehicle windshield it’s all right there: the views, smells, sounds, even the tumultuous climate. Whether deep in the forest on twisted singletrack or out

of town on the bike paths that line Jackson Hole, biking in the Tetons does not disappoint. The area’s riding and the culture that sustains it continues to grow. Advocacy, passion, planning, and a remarkable landscape help steer it all. Here’s a brief look at the dirt and paved possibilities the area has to offer.

Dirt Aspens creak and sway in the strong spring winds while a faint crackling of pine needles under our knobby tires keeps rhythm. Glacial gray-blue water rushes under the bridge as we rumble over the boards. Traversing the Aspen Trail from Teton Canyon to Darby Canyon delivers widespread views of the Teton Valley in Idaho, and a short singletrack solace in early spring. It’s just a taste of what the region has to offer though. One drainage to the south sits a web of 70 miles of singletrack at the famed Grand Targhee Bike Park (Gold–Best Biking pg. 12), rated one of the top-five bike parks in the Northwest. For more of the gravity-fed, Teton Pass on the border of Idaho and Wyoming delivers easy shuttle access to some of the only Forest Service sanctioned downhill trails in the valley. A bit further north you’ll find the bike park at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which delivers loads of liftaccessed trail. Beyond the resorts, miles and miles of trail can be found in the forests on each side of the Pass. Mountain biking is barely forty years old, and it’s finally coming of age here in the Tetons. With

growing trail organizations and support, events like Targhee’s Wydaho Bike Festival, and a blooming base of passionate mountain bikers, the Tetons are becoming an established mountain bike hub. Backcountry epics and mellow beginner loops can be found on both the east and west side. In Jackson, the Cache Creek Trailhead (Silver–Best Biking) provides an easy jump off point for in-town trails. Some of those can be linked with Snow King Mountain (Bronze–Best Family-Friendly Activity pg. ). From tubes to tunes, professional suspension service, and basic rentals, Jackson Hole has a number of full service bike shops. Hoback Sports or Hoffs Bikesmith (Gold–Best Bike Shop pg. ) in Jackson and Fitzgerald’s (Bronze–Best Bike Shop) in both Jackson and Victor are go-tos for gear, service, rentals and trail beta. Whatever kind of bike or adventure lay on your horizon, these shops will help you reach it. Be it smooth and bermed, chunky and challenging, or fast and loamy there’s trail for all in the Tetons. - Ben Gavelda Photo: Ben Gavelda

Voted #2 in the Top 5 Best Bike Parks in the Northwest region on MTBparks.com three years running! With spectacular singletrack trails winding through wildflower meadows and miles of technical lift serviced downhill trails, Grand Targhee Resort established itself as the first downhill mountain bike destination in the Tetons. But this is only part of the story. With incredible trails both on Teton Pass and at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort the region is slowly and quietly becoming a downhill mecca. During the summer months when the West is sweltering, Grand Targhee and the Tetons might be the most extraordinary, cool temperature riding in the lower 48!

Easily accessed from downtown Jackson, Cache Creek Trailhead is a local favorite trail system used year-round for biking, hiking, walking, and skiing. Located on the east side of the valley, is part of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The iconic beginner mountain bike trail is called Putt Putt Trail, which leads riders from the trailhead back to town.

Grand Teton National Park offers over 100 miles of paved roads and multi-use pathways excellent for biking, sightseeing, and exploring the park on two wheels. There are also ten campsites at the Jenny Lake Campground that are designated for bikers and hikers only, making it a little easier to secure an otherwise highly competitive campsite.

Hike up Snow King with your pup for sunrise and enjoy the ski down!

Upon arriving in Jackson Hole, it becomes clear that locals love their pets. With numerous dogfriendly businesses and restaurants, virtually unlimited trails to run, bike, or hike with you fourlegged friend, Jackson Hole is a dog paradise.

Take Your Dog For A Walk On-Leash Want to explore the town of Jackson and its surrounding neighborhoods? Your pup can most definitely join! Check out the Town Map provided by the Friends of Pathways nonprofit organization at friendsofpathways.org. A dog favorite is the Elk Run entrance to High School Road and back. This route has a path that winds along the river, offering plenty of opportunities for cooling off in the water. Keep in mind that your dog must be leashed.

Dog Friendly WAYS TO ENJOY JACKSON HOLE WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND Words by Tory Cameron Photo by Ryan Dee

off in the creek. A local favorite is the Hagen/Putt Putt Loop which is about six miles, the perfect distance for your pup. On seriously hot summer days, the best place to be is soaking in a large body of water. Slide Lake offers the perfect place for a cool dip. Try renting a paddleboard from Rendezvous River Sports and paddling around the lake with your dog lounging on the bow. During the winter, Emily’s Pond and Turpin Meadows offer miles of dog friendly crosscountry ski trails. If you’re more in the mood for some downhill action, purchase an uphill ski pass and hike up Snow King with your pup for sunrise and enjoy the ski down! Dogs are allowed on the mountain before the lifts start to spin for the day.

Off-Leash Adventures

Out On The Town

Snow King Mountain, the ski hill that watches over the town of Jackson, is perfect for dog adventures. In the summer, follow the switchbacks to reach the top, passing through all of the smells of critters, wildflowers, new friends, and fresh air! There is no requirement for dogs to be leashed, so let them be free, but keep them in sight and under voice control, of course.

In the summer months take advantage of the warmer nights and sit outside on a restaurant patio with your pooch! Bin22 (Gold–Best Happy Hour, pg.), Café Genevieve (Silver–Best Breakfast, pg.), Cowboy Coffee (Gold–Best Coffee Shop, pg.), Healthy Being Juicery (Silver–Best Health Food, pg.), Persephone (Bronze–Best Coffee Shop), and The Bird (Silver–Best Outdoor Dining, pg.) all allow your pets to relax, and enjoy a night out with their humans.

Need a little more of a challenge? Check out the Table Mountain hike on the Idaho side of the Tetons. Afterwards, stop by Grand Teton Brewing to enjoy a beer outside with your pooch and sample a variety of snacks from local food trucks. If you want to stay on the Jackson Hole side, Jackson Peak is an amazing option for a challenging day-hike with views of the town and all of its surrounding mountain ranges. On your way back down take a dip with your dog in Goodwin Lake. If hiking is not really your thing, try exploring the Cache Creek trail system by bike (Silver–Best Biking, pg.) where you can mountain bike (or run) with your dog. The trails offer plenty of spots to cool

Lost and Found! If you and your pup get separated while you’re out exploring Jackson Hole, don’t panic. Contact the Teton County Sheriff’s Department and PAWS of Jackson Hole (Bronze–Best Nonprofit, pg.) so they can help reunite you with your best friend. And if there’s room in your heart for another furry pal, consider adopting a pet from the Animal Adoption Center or from PAWS. - Tory Cameron

Eco Immersion

DISCOVERING THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM OF THE TETONS Words by Shannon Sollitt

Photo: Jackson Hole Eco Tours / Josh Metten

As a guide in the Tetons, how do you keep a van full of new guests entertained for hours on end? Answer: you know absolutely everything about where you are and what you’re looking at. You’ve built a repository of stories from a lifetime of studying wildlife. You’re not just doing your job— you’re sharing your life. Jackson Hole Eco Tour Adventures provides guided tours that offer fully immersive experiences with

the incredible Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and its abundant wildlife. What sets Jackson Hole Eco Tour Adventures apart is its guides, according to Josh Metten, who’s been a guide for five years now. Every guide at Eco Tours has a background in wildlife biology, management, or environmental science, plus years of experience living in the Jackson Hole area.

“We’re trying to connect people with this ecosystem and present them with the best information,” Metten says. “You can’t get that accurate interpretive experience on your own.” Eco Tour clients agree: “It would have taken us two weeks to capture half of what we saw,” said participant Gretchen Ward after a particularly eventful tour. “You can tell Josh has a biology degree. He knows everything.” Technically, Metten has a degree in Natural Resource Management, but he started off as a biology major in college. Metten has dedicated his entire adult life to understanding wildlife—first as a field technician and an educator, and now as a guide. He is ready to answer just about any question thrown his way. Have a question about cougars? Metten has two stories to share about his cougar close encounters. What’s that bird out the window? Metten can identify it with hardly more than a glance (he loves birds). One cold May morning, Metten’s tour chances upon a Great Gray Owl. It is the last stop of an already thrilling day—the same group has seen a baby moose who couldn’t have been more than a few days old, a mama bear with her two older cubs, and countless elk, pronghorn, and bison. But Great Gray Owls are particularly elusive and hard to spot. The only thing that gave this owl

B E ST O F JAC KS O N HO L E 201 9

away was its piercing yellow eyes, and Metten found it right away. This is Eco Tour’s biggest asset. The guides don’t just know wildlife—they adore it. Their connection with each animal they encounter is so strong and so profound that it’s impossible for the guests not to feel it too. Which is exactly the goal, according to Metten. “We’re trying to ensure a future for this ecosystem.” Conservation is a core principal of Eco Tour Adventures. They want guests to fall in love with Jackson Hole and its wildlife so that they feel inspired to protect it. “The coolest thing that happens is when I get guests who ask me at the end of a trip, ‘how can I donate to help this place?’” It’s an especially powerful learning opportunity to see a whole family of grizzlies and to be informed that they are a threatened species. Perhaps it’s strategic, then, that Metten waits until that grizzly spotting to tell his guests, “the future of grizzlies depends on our tolerance for them and this ecosystem depends upon people to advocate for it.” “Everything you see—97% of it—is public land,” Metten told guests as their tour came to an end. Although protection of this area is far from perfect, “This is a conservation success story.”

What can I expect on an Eco Tour Adventure? “Be as prepared as possible to get unexpected and rare wildlife sightings,” says Metten.

Small private groups and tours of up to five people travel in an equally luxurious SUV.

With Jackson Hole Eco Tour Adventures, no two days are the same. All adventures are dependent on the weather and the season but there are certain luxuries on which guests can depend: Eco Tour Adventures uses comfortable 10-passenger vans with full-length windows for most of their tours. With groups of seven people, everyone gets a window seat. The vans are equipped with “safari hatches” on the roof so that, if necessary, guests can observe wildlife from the safety of the van.

Eco Tours provides all of the spotting equipment to get a closer look at wildlife from a safe distance, including pairs of binoculars and spotting scopes. Additionally, guides have phone adaptors that allow them to take photos through the spotting scope so guests can enjoy the wildlife and not have to worry about getting the perfect shot themselves. In addition to equipment all trips include meals, snacks, and beverages.

What is the best season to see wildlife? Every season! “There’s always stuff to see,” says Metten. Each season in Jackson Hole is dramatically different and offers a completely unique wildlife viewing opportunity. In his five years as a guide, Metten has never not seen wildlife on a tour. You just have to know where to look. Here’s what you might be able to see each season: Summer: June is a great time to see baby animals. Most baby animals in the valley are born between mid-May and early June. Late July is the beginning of mating season for bison, which is “really cool to watch.” August is affectionately known as “angry August” because it’s probably the least forgiving month of the year. It’s hot and dry. Wildlife tours have to start extra early—like, before sunrise early— or be out until dark, because animals get too hot to be out in the daylight hours. Fall: this is the mating season for most large mammals in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, making it a popular time to view wildlife. It’s also the season of hyperphagia, which is a scientific term for overeating. Both black bears and grizzly bears start consuming upwards of 20,000 calories a day to prepare for winter hibernation. Generally, you can see black bears until the end of October and grizzlies until the end of November. Elk begin gathering in the National Elk Refuge in late November, which is also when bighorn sheep begin rutting (fighting for mates).

Winter: the deep snowfall in Jackson Hole means fewer species are out and about but higher densities of animals in low-lying areas. Certain animals, like bears, are hibernating (hunkering down) for the winter. But the critters that are active are visible in abundance: golden eagles, bald eagles, and thousands of trumpeter swans make winter homes here. Elk and bighorn sheep gather in the National Elk Refuge, and the moose are highly concentrated in the valley looking for food. It’s also the best time of year to see wolves. February and March are the wolves’ mating season, and they become especially active. Winter also offers a totally unique Wyoming experience: tracking. Put on cross-country skis or snowshoes and go on an expedition to find animal tracks. You’ll feel like an original pioneer. Spring: Means more babies! Animals are migrating out of the valley and back up into the mountains, but not before taking advantage of the newlyexposed vegetation on the valley floor. Bison begin calving in April. Then elk, deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and moose follow suit in late May / early June. You also see fox kits, bear cubs, wolf cubs, baby eagles, baby owls… everything is in miniature. It’s also a great time for Metten’s favorite: birds! Close to 300 species migrate to or through the valley, and more than 150 of them nest right here.

What should I wear and bring on an Eco Tour?

Photo: Jackson Hole Eco Tours / Josh Metten

Unless you’re on a winter ski or snowshoe tour, most wildlife viewing happens within a comfortable distance of the van. Still, guests should be prepared for short hikes and all sorts of weather. Wear clothes you can comfortably sit and move it. Summer days generally start off cool, but warm up dramatically. Metten recommends bringing a pair of shorts to change into if it gets

too hot in the afternoon. Afternoon thunderstorms are pretty common in Jackson Hole, so a raincoat is always a good idea. Fall and spring tours are generally cooler, so bring extra layers, warm socks, a warm hat that covers your ears, and gloves. But the most important thing you can bring, according to Metten? “Questions. Lots of questions.” - Shannon Sollitt

B3: T HE BREAK FAST BU RRITO BIBLE

Photo: Ryan Dee / Best of Jackson Hole

Generally speaking, Jackson Hole locals are looking for two things when it comes to breakfast: convenience and saturation. When you consider those two factors, it’s no wonder that breakfast burritos are pretty much available every half mile in town. From your classic grocery store selection to some of the finer bespoke options in town, we’ve done the work required to get you all the beta you need to find the breakfast burrito of your dreams.

1.

Sweet Cheeks Meats: what started as a lazy habit has quickly turned into a Tuesday tradition for many people in Jackson. On that day Sweet Cheeks (Gold–Best Local Food or Drink Producer, pg.) makes their signature breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs, cheese, meat, and their oh-so-delectable Oaxaca gravy. They’re not so big that you can’t devour them while driving, but they’re also not too small—this thing will keep you fueled ‘til lunch and beyond, whether you’re at the office or the mountain.

3.

Lucky’s Market: honestly, Lucky’s (Bronze–Best Health Food, pg.) burritos are the best bang for your buck. Topping out at just $4.39 (with tax!), this is one of the cheapest options for a breakfast burrito in town, while still maintaining a solid level of flavor and size. Pro tip: go with the chorizo option if it’s available. But whatever you do make sure to get there early, as they tend to run out quickly in the mornings!

B3: The Breakfast Burrito Bible THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO THE ULTIMATE BREAKFAST ITEM Words by Jenna Mahaffie

5.

Creekside Market & Deli: while it’s true they are known for their loaded lunch sandwiches (Gold–Best Sandwhich Shop, pg.), Creekside also deserves breakfast burrito respect. There’s a chance you may have to wake up before sunrise to secure one of these bad boys, but let’s just say the juice is worth the squeeze! Their burritos are just as packed with ingredients as their infamous sandwiches and are the perfect adventure fuel for those heading up into Grand Teton National Park (Bronze–Best Biking, pg.).

2.

Jackson Whole Grocer & Cafe: yet another great option for breakfast burritos, the “Whole G” (Gold–Best Grocery Store, pg.) makes theirs fresh every morning and offers a few options (meat, veggie, and occasionally chicken). The Whole Grocer’s burritos are huge, and sometimes after consuming one, I’m slightly appalled that the whole thing fits in my stomach.

4.

Phillips 66 Gas Station on the corner of Broadway and Highway 22: one day this past winter, I was planning on skiing in the sidecountry at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and I realized my avalanche beacon was out of batteries. In a rush to get ready, buy new batteries, fill up on gas, and eat breakfast, I figured the fastest route to the mountain would probably be to try and attempt all of those things at the Phillips 66. Though I fully intended to just buy a granola bar, I saw their breakfast burrito offering and decided to give it a shot. Going against everything I knew about gas station burritos, I was pleasantly surprised at first bite — these things are made fresh every morning and stuffed with all the cheesy, sausage-y, eggy goodness that qualify as an A+ burrito-based breakfast.

The Stagecoach Bar was established at the base of Teton Pass in Wilson, Wyoming, in 1942. Since then it has been the local watering hole for skiers, ranchers, hippies, millionaires, and cowboys alike. Since 1969 the world-famous Stagecoach Band has been playing swing dance music at the bar every single Sunday night (regulars call it Church). Thursday is Disco Night, drawing a crowd of young souls sporting their finest sequins, bell-bottom jeans, and multi-colored wigs. On the other side of the building you’ll find the famous Streetfood restaurant, one of Jackson Hole’s hidden gems. All told, the Stagecoach is more than just a small-town bar – it is a place for the community to socialize, eat & drink, and boogie all night long.

The Silver Dollar Bar & Grill is located in Jackson Hole’s historic Wort Hotel, which opened its doors in 1941. The Silver Dollar Bar is a fixture of the nightlife in downtown Jackson and is one of the best places for live music and dancing. Stop in on Tuesday nights for Bluegrass night to get your swing on, and try sipping a Wyoming Mule.

Snake River Brewing is Wyoming’s oldest brewery, and has been a favorite watering hole for Jackson locals for over 25 years. The Brewpub (how you’ll hear most locals refer to it) cleans up in the Best of Jackson Hole competition every year – they’ve had 8 wins since 2016 alone. Snake River Brewing produces their award-winning beers in house while serving up a full menu of locally-sourced food. Thirsty and in the mood for a quick bite? Grab a Scratch Pretzel, which they bake fresh daily, and pair it with their classic Jenny Lake Lager. We’re getting hungry just thinking about it.

The idea for Melvin Brewing originally developed from a desire to bring West Coast-style IPA to the “west coast” of Wyoming (aka Jackson Hole). They now have a large facility in Alpine, Wyoming, that is producing deliciously creative brews for distribution nationwide. They also still serve a wide swath of craft beers with a side of hip-hop and kung-fu at their Jackson location: Thai Me Up.

Creating a Wellness Department at St. John’s Health

The Deep Well of Jackson Hole MAKING WELLNESS A PRIORITY IN THE TETONS

Words by Julie Fustanio Kling Photos by Ryan Dee, Matteo Steiner, Jared Spieker, and Stephen Shelesky

Sometimes you have to take on a posture to create a pose. A posture, in addition to being the unconscious way we hold our bodies, is an approach to something, whereas a pose is a way of posturing that is done for effect – and often used to teach others. As a yogi and as a freelance journalist who has covered wellness in the Tetons for eight years (and now working on a mindfulness app called Six Minutes Daily) let me say that I know firsthand

how impressive the wellness community in Jackson Hole is. What you see here in the Best of Jackson Hole Guidebook is just the beginning when it comes to the amazing healers we have in our community. While the number of wellness practitioners per capita in the valley has never been officially measured, it is vast, and what makes it even more interesting is it has a grassroots component that has helped bring mindfulness into our schools, businesses, and even into the operations of our local government.

Connie Kemmerer’s wellness posture began 15 years ago when she started the Teton Wellness Institute, a non-profit organization that has helped the local hospital’s wellness program develop. The pose was affirmed when the Wellness Department was featured in the American Hospital Organization’s 2016 Ideas & Innovations for Hospital Leaders. Kemmerer, who is a part-owner Jackson Hole Mountain Resort with her brother Jay Kemmerer, has been quiet about her involvement with the Wellness Department, but she has been an integral part of it from the beginning. Later this summer, St. John’s Medical Center will be transitioning to St. John’s Health, a change made in response to the results of extensive surveys of both patients and community members. Respondents emphasized that a core quality they valued in St. John’s was its commitment to community wellness and preventative care. St. John’s Wellness Director Julia Heemstra[ML1] sees the rebranding as opening a new chapter for wellness in the community. “I never would have predicted we would be here when I first began eight years ago,” Heemstra says. “We see the community support for wellness as a real endorsement of the approach we have taken. Sometimes it’s hard to know if you are on the right

track. But this rebranding effort has shown that we’re offering exactly what the community wants.” “I never would have predicted we would be here when I first began eight years ago,” Heemstra says. “We really see the community support for wellness as a real endorsement of the approach we have taken. Sometimes it’s hard to know if you are on the right track. But when we saw the surveys we were like, wow, we really have been on the right track.” Heemstra attributes the success to Kemmerer, who was “ahead of her time,” but despite pushback, stayed the course, and courageously defended the wellness programs to the medical staff. Now the staff is coming to the Wellness Department, a glass office straight ahead from the hospital’s main entrance, to ask for help. Their programs include the Words on Wellness speaker series, healing touch for patients, pre- and postnatal yoga, certification for wellness coaches, dieticians, science-based stress relief programs that encourage exercise, laughter and sharing vulnerability, and mindfulness programs within the Teton County public schools. The speakers, curated by Heemstra and her team, are vetted based on the readiness of the

community. “I’ve always maintained that with our speaker series we are not just bringing in worldclass speakers, the goal has been to create a conducive culture for change,” and strengthen the glue between wellness programs, the community, and the schools, Heemstra says. “We recently starting putting a wellness champion in each location in the school district, even at the bus barn where they are encouraging each other to work out,” Heemstra says, adding that their wellness partners are growing every day. “We see it as all boats rising together. It’s how we catalyze change in the community.” And while change takes time, the impact is more evident now than ever before. In addition to the schools, the Wellness Department is beginning to

work with local businesses that want to implement their own wellness programs, and with former Jackson Mayor Sara Flitner on a civic initiative called Becoming Jackson Hole. The Becoming Jackson Hole conference this spring invited Dr. Amishi Jha, an associate professor of Psychology at the University of Miami, to raise important questions: “How can we address stress? What could a toolkit look like with social, emotional learning and mindful-based interventions? How can we use science to test it?” Flitner asks. “It has been a long road, but the cool thing is I’m still excited,” Kemmerer says. “I see a new evolution coming… the next step is really changing the community in the civic arena and in business.”

We want to use wellness as glue to connect with people on a different level.

Wellness as a Business Chelsea Kmiec, a Los Angeles-based wellness consultant, became the Chief Wellness Officer for Jackson Hole Real Estate last year. This year, she began working with traditional fitness studios like Pursue Movement and Inversion Yoga (Gold–Best Yoga Studio, pg.), along with forwardthinking healers like Tanya Mark, a nutritionist who talks about the taboo subject of emotional eating, and Vera Iconica Architecture, a firm which specializes in designing spaces for wellness. Kmiec sends out a “Wellness Wednesday” post that is designed to help realtors reduce their stress and provide content to clients like “The dangers of home cleaning products,” and

“The benefits of beeswax versus soy candles.” “We want to use wellness as glue to connect with people on a different level,” Kmiec says. “The buying power is soon to be in the hands of millennials who value experiences over things and lifestyle over wealth.” The Global Wellness Institute, a large non-profit organization with a mission to empower wellness worldwide, says the wellness economy is worth $4.2 trillion and is growing rapidly, giving rise to the term ROW (return on wellness).

Home of the Medicine Wheel As a self-described “Healthcarepreneur” Francine Bartlett has gone through her own transformation in the past seven years. She’s a physical therapist who started Excel Physical Therapy and now owns Medicine Wheel Wellness, a wellness collaborative with 20 alternative medical practitioners under one roof in downtown Jackson. By providing the back-end booking and billing support for a Chinese medicine expert, a chiropractor, sound healers, core strength trainers, a shaman, and physical therapists who are all independent contractors, she helps healers heal by taking away the administrative headaches. “Doctors are bad businesspeople,” she says. “They went to school to save lives.” The wheel, an idea that came to Bartlett during a yoga training in Hawaii, and is the subject of her book, “The Way of the Medicine Wheel,” hit home when she realized how close Jackson Hole is to the Bighorn National Forest where the prototypical medicine wheel is, an ancient ceremonial site built by the indigenous people native to this region. Indigenous people have also built stone medicine wheels in South Dakota, Montana, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Bartlett’s version of the wheel incorporates the cardinal directions with colors, seasons, and Earth elements to encourage patients to integrate modern medicine with ancient wisdom when it comes to preventative care. “In Jackson, our dominating force is physical activity,” Bartlett says. “Everyone is tough and wants to be in the mountains. But we lose a lot of people in the mountains too. We have to hold space for the emotional, mental, and spiritual along with physical.” No one knows this better than Medicine Wheel’s ambassadors, including Jimmy Chin, Travis Rice, Kelly Halpin and other local athletes. The reason Bartlett thinks they chose Medicine Wheel is because they are mature athletes who are looking to center themselves when they come home. In return they help her by bringing cutting edge healing modalities that they are exposed to in their travels back to Jackson. Being an athlete in extreme sports takes a mindset that requires practice, precision and an ability to be in the present. Perhaps that’s why there are so many healers and wellness initiatives in Jackson.

Civic Engagement In her four years as the mayor of Jackson, Wyoming, Sara Flitner said she saw lots of really committed people who nonetheless struggled to engage positively, which made solving conflicts difficult. In an effort to help the town come together, she introduced 100 people involved in local government to The Four Constituents of Wellbeing, a program of mindfulness and meditation designed by the founder of The Center for Healthy Minds, Richard Davidson. The program is intended to show people that well-being is a skill that can be trained. Davidson is a professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin, who has visited Jackson to participate in the Words on Wellness series.

Project, an initiative that helps communities encourage awareness, compassion, and generosity in their residents and businesses. The pair hope to bring to Jackson at some point in the future. “When I swore out of office I was committed to seeing this through,” says Flitner. “I think we will get there. We don’t need to be afraid of asking any question, that’s the posture I’m adopting. Let’s keep trying stuff and then asking, are we getting it right? People are ready. We are all human beings who want more connection, less stress and to become more relevant.” - Julie Fustanio Kling

Mindful Schools In Alta, Wyoming, on the other side of Teton Pass elementary school kids from kindergarten through fifth grade come together for a weekly circle to practice calming their bodies, a routine they’ve come to know well. They take mindful minutes before standardized testing, and this spring they’ve implemented a breath-a-day program, an initiative that fifth- and sixth-graders started. “The momentum that it has created is amazing,” says Alta Principal Jennifer Beck, who was initially introduced to mindfulness through St. John’s Health. She is also certified in an online program called Mindful Schools that is based in California. “The kids are internalizing strategies and beginning to use them when they are riled and when they need to get calmed down.”

“What I’ve seen is a real change in behaviors,” Beck says. “Kids aren’t hitting each other. They are able to walk away, identify their feelings and say what they need.” When they began the program three years ago, Beck says they engaged the parents. “At first it seemed foreign and kind of woo-woo—but sitting down and going through the curriculum with them helped make them supportive for the program.” Was there pushback? Of course, she says. “We have pushback on math too, but kids still have to take math class,” she says. “That’s how I’ve handled it.” Photo: Ryan Dee / Best of Jackson Hole

“Let’s live the moment instead of wondering what it’s like / I can’t wait any longer so tell me if your wondering what it’s like / Let’s live the moment so I can go to asleep at night / Do you want to hear the truth? (tell me the truth) / Can we quit pretending that we don’t need to speak / Would it scare you if I still need who I need / We all hear the voices, do they scream inside of you? Why don’t you scream in yours (scream in yours)?” -lyrics from “The Truth,” written by Candice (Miller) Kwiatkowski appearing on the Bootleg Flyer release, “Saving Grace” The graceful sister harmonies, endearing outfits, distinct Midwestern accents, the unwavering wall of collective duo energy, and the intimacy of sharing the gift of music with adoring fans—The Miller Sisters are ever present. They always will be. 17th Century Quaker William Penn once said, “Death cannot kill what never dies.” That spirit is what Candice’s legacy leaves to this community and what it leaves to her family and her musical partner and sister, Karee. “Candice was very intelligent and a great performer, and that helped me shine,” Karee said. “We wanted to play music for soul satisfaction rather than high dollar or fame, and I believe we completed that task.”

The Miller Sisters: In Retrospect CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF CANDICE MILLER Words by and photo by Aaron Davis

The last two children of a tight-knit family of ten including six siblings, Candice and Karee grew up on a farm in Southern Minnesota singing gospel in church as well as folk and country music. Early influences from The Everly Brothers and The Judds made lasting impressions before the youthful travel bug drove the duo to Nashville, Reno, California and Alaska in the early 00s. They eventually settled in Teton Valley Idaho in 2004. It was there that they uplifted the community with the Fox Creek Fandango, an annual family-friendly music festival to showcase the local talent that they felt deserved as much respect, wages, and stage time as the touring acts passing through the Tetons. Last month’s 10th annual Fandango featured six bands and was billed as a celebration of Candice’s life. Charismatic and immensely talented, The Miller Sisters have released six recordings through three different projects—eight-piece rock band Mandatory Air’s “Live at the Knotty Pine” (2005) and lone studio album “Take Me Home” (2010), the fivepiece country soul of Bootleg Flyer’s “Saving Grace” (2013), and The Miller Sisters’ “Live at the Mangy Moose” (2006), “One for the Veterans” (2010) and an under-the-radar live-in-studio recording, “Hymnal Favorites” (2015). The latter twenty-two songs were

recorded in just three hours on the same day that Candice and her husband, Chad, had visited the cemetery where they had laid a child to rest the previous year. “The level of vulnerability to the performer’s spiritual access is [intense],” Karee explained. “What happens when we share the songs of our souls, something is happening in that moment, the live music that is filtering through us [to] those that are present.” In a 2010 interview prior to a Mandatory Air album release show, Karee had said, “Pretty much all of the songs on “Take Me Home” have something to do with the way we have lived, seeing out our experiences. We can give this to our kids, and that’s how we’ll portray to them what we have done in our lives.” Now, speaking with Karee nine months after Candice’s suicide, the enduring soul-searching is evident. Candice was not only her sister and her musical partner, but also her guiding light. Candice was a natural songwriter, the impetus of chasing musical dreams across the country, of being in multiple bands and writing original material. She inspired Karee to begin writing. The overarching authenticity of their career came from performing together, deeply communicating with listeners that were willing (whether they knew it or not) to consume and connect with sometimes-intimate lyrical subjects. “Since you’ve been gone, I’ve been so blue / Since the only thing I could cling to was you / You broke my heart, when you found someone new / And now that you’re gone and I can’t move on, what am I to do?” -lyrics from “Since You’ve Been Gone,” written by Candice (Miller) Kwiatkowski. “Performing without Candice, I’m like a child again,” Karee admitted. “I’m not sure that I want to be a solo act or leading a band, but I’m along for the ride and getting to know who I am again and what I want. Music transcends something so much more powerful than we are able to process—medicine for the mind—and that’s a calling but I need to find what makes me satisfied. I’m a steady rock and have a good support team, and the overflowing love from this community is what gives me hope.” Karee is continuing her musical journey as Sister Karee & the Other Brothers, which features many members of Mandatory Air. They are billed with Hayes Carll at the JacksonHoleLive! show at Snow King on July 19, 2019. -Aaron Davis

Jackson Hole: home of old-world grit and grind. Few places produce, lure, and boast a higher density of athletes—pros and non-pros alike— than the Tetons. As a local and global community, we prize these folks not merely for what they achieve publicly and personally, but for how they elevate those around them. Like the mountains we inhabit, our athletes are living purveyors of stoke, inspiring us to see what’s possible when you apply yourself to the dream. Regardless of whether you were born here or came and never left, there is something to this place that awakens, attracts, and encourages the best in us all. This valley gets into you, and there is nothing else. Yet, there so many other mountain towns with similar qualities. What is it about this vortex that magnifies the athletic prowess of so many?

Maybe it’s the caliber of competition, an instincttriggering landscape, or access to a wider range of possibilities. Maybe the beauty lies in our inability to name it. You’ll just have to spend some time here and see what she makes of you. Most Jackson Hole athletes will tell you it’s not necessarily about the accolades or boxes checked, but rather the journey, lifestyle, and relationships built along the way. From the prehistoric vision quests of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes to pioneers and fur trappers manifesting west, folks have journeyed to the Tetons to discover and test themselves for millennia. If you’re here long enough, life in this valley will distill you to your purest form. The following list of noteworthy Jackson Hole athletes is short but mighty, and a reflection of the deep pool of athletic stock in the Tetons.

Jaelin Kauf: Olympic Mogul Skier

Travis Rice: Professional Snowboarder

At just 22 years old, US Ski Team freestyle mogul skier and Olympian Jaelin Kauf possesses a level of sustained discipline and drive most folks won’t ever comprehend or muster. Born in Alta, Wyoming, to two pro mogul skiers, Jaelin’s path to professional skiing was as ingrained in her as her genetic makeup. Before her career took off, Jaelin planned to pursue an architecture degree, but that all changed with her breakout 2016 World Cup performance. That immediately landed her on the US Ski Team followed by a Rookie of the Year award from the Federation of International Skiing, demonstrating that her hunger, work ethic, and dominance are very much her own.

Travis Rice won Gold this year for Best Athlete in Jackson Hole. At this point, if his name is unfamiliar to you, one has to ask, “Where have you been?” Few riders have done more for contemporary snowboarding culture than Travis. Born and bred in Jackson, you’d be hard pressed to find a ski town where he isn’t a household name. Reigning snowboard powerhouse and hometown hero, with a career spanning twenty years, Travis proves that a wunderkind’s prime isn’t confined to his youth. He is at the center of bar-raising snowboarding films like That’s It, That’s All, The Art of Flight, and The Fourth Phase. He is firmly cemented as one of snowboarding’s greatest talents, elevated by his blend of fast, burly and bold riding that defies all gravity and logic.

Since her breakout, she has medaled Bronze and Silver in dual moguls at FIS World Championships.

She competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and finished 7th, and then she finished 1st in three of the five World Cup stops. Now her sights are set on ranking number one in the world and on competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Jaelin dreams big and works even harder. If her second year in a row ranked as the number two skier in the world indicates anything, it’s that her goal to be ranked first is well within reach. When she’s not following a jam-packed training regimen and competition schedule, she’s feeding her creative impulses with graphic design, travel, and surfing. And if you think this gal’s prowess is in just one area, wait until you see her surf.

If his exhaustive list of career achievements and most recent ‘18/19 winter season demonstrate

anything, it’s this: the man is insatiable. From throwing down a mental line in Hakuba, Japan, and winning as a wildcard in his first-ever Free Ride World Tour, to capturing the crown at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s Kings and Queens of Corbet’s competition, and taking off to Alaska to devour viral-worthy monster pillow lines — there are few arenas Travis doesn’t dominate. It’s worth noting his drive is not just snowbound. These days you’re just as likely to find Travis out on the water, surfing or sailing. In 2018, he sailed his catamaran, Falcor, from Tahiti to Oahu with big wave surfer Ian Walsh, collecting water quality samples for research along the way. A master of time management and carrying ambition in spades, Travis Rice is the ultimate dream-chaser and dream-generator.

Jimmy Chin: Mountaineer Filmmaker From eating ramen cups out of his van to working the Oscar circuit, Jimmy Chin proves there is no ceiling on what a former van-living dirtbag can accomplish. A veteran North Face Team athlete and National Geographic Explorer, when Jimmy isn’t traveling the world he calls Jackson home. Despite his now widespread fame and global acclaim for films like Meru and, more recently, Free Solo (which won him an Academy Award), Jimmy is as humble as they come. He maintains a level of fitness and skill comparable to, and often beyond that of, the athletes he shoots—all while carrying the additional weight of camera equipment. There is a reason Jimmy is one of the most highly regarded athletes among his peers. A true multi-talent with a keen eye, you’ve likely been stopped in your tracks by one of Jimmy’s stunning photographs. His most recent feat

includes an expedition down to Queen Maude Land in Antarctica with The North Face alongside climbers Conrad Anker, Anna Pfaff, Alex Honnold, Savannah Cummins, and Cedar Wright. There he and Conrad put up a new 4,000-foot big wall climbing route on Ulvetanna, a peak also known as The Wolf’s Fang. There they climbed under extreme conditions that would give even the most seasoned astronaut vertigo. Time, he will tell you, is his most valuable asset, and whenever he has a few days to spare, depending on the time of year, you’ll find him right back in the Tetons ascending or descending his favorite lines. If his mountains of accomplishments don’t leave you breathless, his friendly laid-back demeanor will leave you feeling like you just met the rarest of human forces.

Cam Fitzpatrick: Professional Snowboarder Cam Fitzpatrick is a Jackson-bred grom (young shredder) turned professional young gun who took full advantage of his surroundings and made a career out of playing in his backyard. Under the wings of legendary local riders like Travis Rice, Bryan Iguchi, Willie Mcmillon, and his dad Mike Fitzpatrick—a JHMR Ski Patroller for 30+ years—Cam found his own flight. Such early guidance ingrained in Cam a strong and nuanced understanding for managing risk and safety in the mountains. After years on the competitive park and slopestyle circuit in Park City, Utah, Cam returned to Jackson to pursue filming and reconnected with his snowboarding roots. His respect for and knowledge of the mountains allows him to send it as big in the backcountry as he does inbounds.

In 2016, his dedication, work ethic, and persistence landed him a breakout part in Red Bull’s The Fourth Phase, alongside his mentor, Travis Rice, and other snowboarding heroes. Whether you spot him on screen or in person out on the hill, he’ll likely be in the midst of a good time, riding alongside friends like local Jackson Hole shredders Mikey Marohn, Rich Goodwin, and Rob Kingwill. As of this ‘18/19 winter season, the group began releasing short films under the tag of This Is Us In, giving Cam a platform to share his unique riding style and honor the mountains that raised him. A true hustler, when Cam isn’t pushing it in the winter, he’s making the most of summertime by slinging signature cocktails at parties and events out of his renovated horse trailer called Bar-SIP-Bar.

Janelle Smiley: Alpinist & Life Coach Janelle Smiley is one athlete whose life embodies a pure love for mountain landscapes and being in them. Smiley was born in Colorado, and has been a local Jackson ski mountaineer and holistic coach for many years now. This Arc’teryx Mountain Endurance Athlete’s life is a culmination of every dedicated choice she’s made to be closer to the mountains. From crafting a career as a professional guide and athlete to marrying a partner who loves to climb and be in the elements as much as she does, Janelle knows her proximity to wild spaces makes her whole, inspiring her to go beyond her perceived limits to achieve the extraordinary. In 2018, she was a part of an elite group of alpinists

that competed in the Red Bull Der Lange Weg Race. The goal was to complete one of the world’s most grueling traverses in record-breaking time. Her team covered 1,000 miles over the Alps from Vienna, Austria, to Nice, France, and won by completing the challenge in an astonishing 36 days. Lately, this new mom is mindfully mining new ways to be of service to the Jackson Hole community by providing novel holistic coaching experiences that blend self-discovery and empowerment through guided mountaineering trips. -Emile Newman
