Amsterdam Unveils World’s First Underwater Bicycle Garage

In late January, Amsterdam opened the world’s first bicycle garage underwater, located under the city’s Central Station canal, with space for 7,000 bikes.

The bicycle garage is connected underground with the metro and the Central Station hall to help integrate cycling with the railway network.

A remarkable feat of engineering, it took four years to build at a cost of around €60 million. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, parking is free for the first 24 hours.

Cycling is by far the top form of transport in Amsterdam, and the Central Station is one of the busiest places in the city. According to the capital’s most recent figures, 835,000 Amsterdam

On February 7, Toronto City Council voted 22–4 to accept the staff report and the unanimous recommendation of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee (IEC) to make the Midtown Yonge Complete Street Pilot permanent.

More than 8,000 people signed the petition, along with thousands who provided personal comments and sent emails. Sixty-four supporters came to speak at City Hall.

According the Yonge4All movement, the Midtown Yonge Complete Street is just the first step. REimagining Yonge will remake the corridor between Sheppard Ave and Finch Ave with detailed design beginning in 2023, and YongeTOmorrow will bring a complete street on Yonge from College to Queen with implementation to begin in 2024.

In mid-January, IKEA added Sunrider solar-powered cargo bikes to its alternative home delivery transport services for more sustainable last-mile solutions. Following a successful pilot delivering products to its customers within the city centre around its store in Delft, Netherlands, the worldwide IKEA franchisor (Inter IKEA Systems B.V.) will scale up and offer the Sunrider.

“This Sunrider bike can accommodate roughly 90 percent of the IKEA product range and emits 98 percent less CO2 than modern diesel vans. Georgian Trail E-Bike Rentals Sees Success and an Award

Launched in July 2022, Georgian Trail E-Bikes Rentals has seen rapid success, growing from eight e-bikes to 13 in only a few months. Embraced by the South Georgian Bay area community, the start-up rapidly connected with the local cycling community, as their novel “contactless” rental program caters to folks who want to explore further.

Velovoute’s Bicycle Parking and eBike Charging System in Quebec Poised for Big Expansion aunched in 2014, Québec’s Velovoute parking/charging system for bicycles and e-bikes is seeing an uptick in demand, and the company is laying the groundwork for significant growth over the next few years. As e-bikes continue to surge and the popularity of cycling tourism grows, Velovoute is well-positioned for expansion.

Currently, the Eastern Townships and Montérégie regions are looking to adopt the system for their popular 235km Véloroute Gourmande ride that features more than 100 epicurean stops and encompasses 12 municipalities with six more poised to get on board, reports La Voix de l’Est. Recently named on the New York Times’ list of 52 places to go in 2023, the route is also part of the 28,000km Trans Canada Trail and could be eligible for funding.

Bromont recently signed on for two units and, back in 2019, the 256km Véloroute des Bleuets circuit (blueberry cycle route) around Lac Saint-Jean signed on for 12 units, which may have been the first e-cycling route in North America.

Velovoute is the brainchild of Louis Fournier from Chicoutimi, Que., dating back to 2014. When he and Daniel Gelinas crossed paths in 2018, the wheels started to turn.

On a trip to Europe, he visited Bike Energy in Austria, a company that specializes in e-mobility charging infrastructure, and the Velovoute system evolved further.

The Velovoute charging system requires a special smart cable, which is offered as part of the package, and end users select the cable for their particular e-bike. “Our system covers 80% of the e-bikes in the marketplace,” says Gelinas, who is poised to become a 50% partner of COMP-X Canada Inc., the sales arm of the Velovoute system.

The preferred model houses four bicycles with the option of adding a charging station for two e-bikes. “About 95% of the orders are for parking/charging units,” says Gelinas.

Charging time is claimed to be half the time of domestic sockets, and end users do not need to carry their charging units on longer trips. A three cubic foot upper box secures the battery, saddle, helmet and other personal effects or accessories.

Gelinas would like the company’s Velovoute system to be able to serve around twenty bicycles at a time, as potential clients, such as resorts that rent e-bikes, will want to charge a large number of e-bikes at one time.

COMP-X Canada Inc. is slated to meet with officials from the Eastern Townships and Montérégie regions, along with Québec government officials in early April — a government announcement is also pending.

Velovoute is currently in discussions with distributors in other countries, which will allow expansion into new markets.

The Perthshire Ebike Enablement Partnership (PEEP) in Scotland is also interested in the Velovoute system.

“We also want to have more autonomy over our production process, as sometimes it’s hard to give our customers firm delivery dates,” added Gelinas.

A four-bike VéloVoûte system runs about $5,899, which includes installation; for two additional charging ports, there’s an additional $4,790 in fees.

How long have you been in the cycling law field, and when did you set up www.bikinglawyer.ca?

TBL: I’ve been a lawyer for 10 years and have been handling cycling cases for at least eight. During 2018, I started going by the Biking Lawyer. In 2019, I started to realize that I could help more people on my own and I really started to lean into bicycle law and started my own firm. Then part way through 2020, a more senior lawyer from British Columbia (Joel Zanatta) liked what I was doing, and we ended up becoming partners and forming the Biking Lawyer LLP, which is a law firm of multiple lawyers. It all started during COVID when everyone was working remotely. It was natural to extend it into work life, and there was already a great online cycling community with people sharing ideas and experiences. It was all just shared organically online because people are looking for information.

Please tell us about your cycling background and your specialized field of law.

The Biking Lawyer: Like most folks, I grew up cycling as a kid. And in my teenage years, I lived up in Collingwood, ON area where there are lots of hills, so I learned how to mountain bike and road bike there. While at school in the city, the bike got put away. When I got into law in downtown Toronto, I decided to start cycling again instead of sitting on streetcars with a hundred other people. I picked up an old 1970s Raleigh to commute to work and fell back in love with cycling. But riders were up against huge failings in road safety and infrastructure. Being a lawyer that helped injured people, I started to see more and more cyclists and it went from there to combining my work with something that I love.

Last summer there were controversial issues at High Park in Toronto between cyclists and police, along with cycling rallies, etc. — was anything resolved?

TBL: There are certain groups that seemingly can’t be reached. Some members of the community took the opportunity to assault cyclists with vehicles. A client of ours, who was riding around High Park at the height of the controversy, was confronted by a driver who screamed expletives at him about not stopping at stop signs and literally ran him off the road. The police also seem pretty closeminded. I’m currently fighting about three pro bono cases on behalf of cyclists who were wronged by police at High Park. I wrote a letter to Police Chief and the Mayor asking for some dialogue without success. We’re advancing the claims,

which is costing me, and the City, a ton of time and money.

That said, it created the impetus for a movement strategy and dialogue as to how High Park should be used. There’s been huge engagement from people of all stripes and, hopefully, we’ll see a park in our city that’s beautiful and wonderfully changed in a really usable and transformative way for people.

Although there were some real downsides with some groups, I think we are making some headway on park usage. And seeing hundreds of cyclists on the streets rallying for a good cause really solidified our community.

Do you think the politicians are ready to embrace safe cycling as a mobility solution that also fights climate change?

TBL: Yes and no. Some will, but some won’t, and others will tell the public one thing, but their actions won’t support it.

It’s going to take a lot of work from community and safety organizations to hold people accountable to fight climate change, reduce the amount of people driving for short trips, while making it safe for cyclists and other modes of transportation. Some will need to be dragged forward, but the winds of change are here, and even if it takes a long time, they’re going in our direction.

You started a law section for e-bikes on your website recently, how is that going?

TBL: It’s an area that we’re super keen on. You can’t be in a major urban centre in Ontario and Toronto’s not see e-bikes everywhere. They’ve thing opened up opportunities for people with mobility issues and others who are eager to get outside and on to bikes — this is fantastic and we’re really stoked about this. There are a lot of hard-working young men and women out there delivering food and being couriers on e-bikes, and we love this as well. To positively support this new emerging segment, and provide rights information for people, we added the new e-bike section. Following the rules of the road is crucial, and there are tons of conversations about e-bikers in this regard. Our main focus is always for people to be safe and know their rights. We want to encourage e-bike use and for people to feel safe on them.

My dad taught me cycling and we gravel bike together, but he’s in his 70s. There’s going to come a time when he’s going to hop on an e-bike so we can keep cycling together, and I’m really grateful for that.

Your website also talks about the Bike Brigade... can you please give us more info on that?

TBL: The Bike Brigade is one of the most beautiful things that I have had the pleasure to be part of. When the pandemic broke out in a big way and the border was shut and everybody was in lockdown, a small group of cyclists and I in Toronto grouped together to help seniors and vulnerable people who couldn’t go out to the grocery store, or pick up medications, etc. We were determined to make sure we’d deliver food supplies, prescriptions, you name it to people

High Park saw police and cyclists at odds in need. We did that through the first lockdown in 2020, the second one in 2021, and we still do it to this day. COVID accentuated the food insecurity issues and other equity issues that plague Toronto, so we have remained dedicated to those communities and we’re grateful to the countless volunteers who have helped along the way. We now have a tech team that created an app to digitize everything and direct riders to their deliveries. Every single day, for multiple community organizations, we deliver food and supplies — it’s wonderful.

People can sign up via our website, and then they’ll receive an intro email, followed by a crash course in delivering to people in need.

How would you rate Toronto as a cycling city?

TBL: I’ve been cycling in Toronto for 10 years now, maybe more, and we’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. COVID sparked a cycling revolution and there are more bike lanes, but as the pandemic has subsided things have slowed down. We have to continue to battle here for safe streets. While I haven’t cycled around in too many other Canadian cities, I would say that Vancouver looks really appetizing for cyclists. I was in Calgary years ago and couldn’t believe that the bike lanes were pristine after a big snowstorm, and Hamilton installed a bidirectional bike lane on Cannon Street, one of its longest streets. Many other cities have done things that we admire which can inspire us to achieve more in Toronto. There’s still a long way to go, but some good progress has been made.

Do you have any cycling goals yourself?

TBL: I ride for errands. I ride to deliver for the Bike Brigade, and I was out delivering hot meals today. I have a nice road bike and a gravel bike, and I like to hop on them for exercise.

I like to take my kids to school as well, so I’m cycling all the time. My goals are to do all the bike races I did last year, all the gravel races, and finish them all and try to beat myself.

That’s what I’m looking forward to trying to do.

NBDA E-Bike Standards and Insurance Certification Database

The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) has announced the formation of an e-bicycle database that focuses on current certifications and insurances held.

The database will be used as a resource for members to quickly access and review the insurances and certifications held by multiple brands.

The NBDA is encouraging all e-bike suppliers and manufacturers to add their contact information and credentials to this list.

Specifically, the database asks for contact information, product certifications held (UL 2849, UL 2271, UL 2272, EN15194), CPSC Certification and product liability insurance. There is also space given to upload supporting documentation.

Cycle Tourism Conference Canada in Toronto a Success The 2023 Cycle Tourism Conference Canada event in Toronto welcomed over 160 delegates

Delegates enjoyed a fabulous buffet lunch and additional networking opportunities that included various booths on display. Another highlight was the post-lunch Bicycle Friendly Business Awards & Presentations that recognized many local businesses and initiatives.

Afternoon presentations included how to showcase great riding opportunities in your region, perspectives on creating an authentic “cycling vacation”, the successes and challenges of charity cycling events, route planning and navigation for all types of cyclists, insights into data and analytics, and measuring traffic on trails for a better understanding to make informed decisions and investments.

Wrapping up the conference was a live video with Liz Thorstensen from Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in the USA, which boasts more than 1 million grassroots supporters,

s the tourism industry worldwide is rebounding from the pandemic, the 2023 Cycle Tourism Conference Canada in-person event in Toronto, held March 2 at Centennial College, was welcomed by 160+ delegates from across Canada, including the USA, for a jam-packed day of informative sessions, networking and camaraderie.

Organized by Ontario By Bike, a program of Transportation Options, a not-for-profit organization, this was their fifth conference with the last one held in 2019, as 30 speakers delivered engaging and jampacked presentations to a captive audience.

International speakers participated via live video and included keynote presenter, Camille Thomé at Velo & Territoires in France. Velo & Territoires has a robust network of more than 188 members with plans to develop 100,000km of additional structural cycling routes, achieve a 12% modal share, quadruple bicycle financing, and bring France to the forefront of world destinations for cycling tourism.

Attendees also learned about Québec’s unique and innovative Véloroute Gourmande, a successful 235km cycling trip across the Eastern Townships and Montérégie regions. Next was Michigan’s 160-mile Great Lakes Way and 2,000-mile Iron Belle Trail that recently announced a new collaboration with Ontario’s Waterfront Regeneration Trust’s 2,250-mile Great Lakes Waterfront Trail in conjunction with the 15,000-mile Trans Canada Trail.

The morning sessions also included information about the growing e-bike market, Sault-St Marie’s active development of mountain bike trails, gravel cycling success in Collingwood, along with Endless Mountains’ incredible and unique 670km (415 miles) gravel bikepacking loop in Pennsylvania.

The one-of-a-kind Salamander folds and can fit through most doors and hallways, meaning you can take it into malls, the grocery store, etc., yet it can be serviced by a normal bike shop. Always innovating, the e-Salamander was born soon after and became a dream come true for many families.

Bell’s company, Wike, developed more than 20 types of trailers ranging from child and pet trailers to niche trailers that can tow a kayak or golf clubs. They also manufacture trailers and products for individuals with special needs, enabling older children, and adults to enjoy the outdoors with their families. He was proud to say that Wike’s products are designed and made in Canada, and sold around the world.

Bob went the extra mile to be of help to friends, old and new, and people he met through the course of his business and time in council. He was always ready to be of service.

Bell developed a special appreciation for Chile and its people and had always wanted to return to Chile for a holiday and specifically to Bell’s Bay on Lago Blanco in Tierra del Fuego. And yes, Bell’s Bay was named after Bob. He was remembered as an enthusiastic camper and fisher and was a founding member of the local Cerro Sombrero Fishing club, which is still in existence today on the shore of Lago Blanco.

He thought that Bell’s Bay was the most beautiful place that he had ever been to and that is where he died suddenly after a morning of fishing.

We join the cycling community in sending condolences to his family and friends, and pay tribute to his longstanding support of cycling and sustainable transportation.

The late Bob Bell founded Wike Bicycle Company back in 1990. he cycling community across Canada, the USA, and abroad, was saddened by the news that Bob “Fergus” Bell, 67, founder of Wike Bicycle Company in Guelph, ON, passed away suddenly in mid-January while vacationing in Chile with his wife, Anna Shaftoe.

Bell was a mechanical engineer who had worked overseas in Chile for five years early in his career. Later he was employed at a number of local businesses while establishing his own company that opened in 1990. The demand for Wike’s legendary bicycle trailers grew and the company built a worldwide reputation.

The company ships products around the globe and proudly claims to be North America’s largest manufacturer of bicycle trailers. Bell didn’t just want to change urban transportation in his hometown of Guelph... he hoped to change the world!

A fierce advocate for active transportation, Bell was also a Guelph city councillor for 16 years and served three terms.

He strove to improve his local community by promoting bicycle trails and hiking, along with the development of social and affordable housing which Wike’s innovative was close to his heart.

The fabled P’tit Train du Nord (PtdN) linear park 234km cycle path is the longest of its kind in Canada.

P’tit Train du Nord welcomes about 950,000 cyclists each year

Former train stations are found approximately every 10 kilometres along the busy southern portions of the PTdN; most have been converted into bike stops, cafés, tourist information shops and small museums.

Many of the B&Bs and inns found on the PTdN route have earned Bienvenue cyclistes accreditation, meaning they are recognized by Vélo Québec as catering to cyclists. Across Québec, there are some 500 inns, hotels and campgrounds that are recognized as such, and the PTdN is a testament to how local tourism has flourished in conjunction with the bike path.

Autobus PTdN offers a luggage transportation service along the bike path and can accommodate up to 85 cyclists a day. About 95% of people using this service start at MontLaurier, the northern terminus of the PTdN, and ride south.

Along the route, cyclists can also access the Parc du Corridor aérobique, a 58km circuit from Morin-Heights to Amherst, through landscapes dotted with lakes and green valleys, along with picturesque villages.

The P’tit Train du Nord is also one of the routes used by the early settlers, and several side-trips will take you to sites of particular heritage interest such as the Gare de Val-David, or the 13 murals of Pays-d’en-Haut in St-Adele that now comprise Route des Belles-Histoires.

The trail also welcomes e-bikes within provincial guidelines, such as a maximum speed of 32kph and wearing a mandatory bike helmet.

The PTdN route is part of the 28,000-kilometre Trans Canada Trail and Québec’s Route verte, a 5,358-kilometre network of bike paths in the province, described by the National Geographic Society in 2007 as “the world’s best cycling path.”

Québec’s love affair with cycling is renowned, and the fabled P’tit Train du Nord (PTdN) linear park 234km cycle path, built over an old railway line in the Laurentians just north of Montréal from Saint-Jerome to Mont-Laurier, is the longest of its kind in Canada.

Opened in 1994, the PTdN welcomes about 950,000 cyclists each year, representing 72% of the total users, along with approximately 400,000 pedestrians/runners, or about 28% of the total.

It’s estimated that 50% of the visiting cyclists come from outside Québec, including Great Britain, Australia, France, the United States and all over Canada to discover the charm of the P’tit Train du Nord.

The entire trail is separated from the road with an average gradient of 4%, and most of the trail (72%) is paved with the remaining sections, primarily gravel roads.

The scenery is mostly forested rolling hills, lakes, waterfalls and villages. Keep in mind that there are some often-lonely sections where it’s recommended to bring food, water, tools, a spare inner tube and insect spray.

The Iron Belle Trail is the longest state-sponsored hiking and biking trail in the USA

The Iron Belle Trail – Michigan, USA

When it comes to incredible cycling routes, Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail tops the field as the longest state-sponsored hiking and biking trail in the USA. Stretching from Belle Isle Park in Detroit to Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula, it includes an 828-mile (1,333km) bicycle route and a 1,273-mile (2,036km) hiking route.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, the world-class trail was initially proposed in 2012 by then Governor Rick Snyder with $220 million ($65M in public funds, $155M in private) budgeted for the development and maintenance of the trail for the next 10 years.

Showcasing hundreds of municipalities, 83 different towns and villages, and more than 170 parks and natural areas, the Iron Belle Trail traverses 48 different counties across the state.

A large portion of the Iron Belle Trail follows the existing North Country National Scenic Trail, which runs from the New York–Vermont border to central North Dakota, encompassing 4,800 miles (7,700km).

The Iron Belle Trail cycling route, which welcomes Class 1 e-bikes, utilizes many of the state’s existing bike paths, bike lanes and designated biking routes such as the Paint Creek Trail in Oakland County, the North Central State Trail between Gaylord and Mackinaw City, and U.S. Bicycle Route 10 in the Upper Peninsula. It will also incorporate routes along U.S. Highway 2 across the Upper Peninsula.

Overseen by Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Iron Belle Trail relies on federal, state and local partnerships to facilitate the expansive nonmotorized, active transportation project under the guidance of the current Governor, Gretchen Whitmer.

To date, about 75% of this fabulous trail project is completed. New funding will be designated to sections that need resources to finish the project which has yet to have a final date of completion.

La Vélodyssée, France

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2022, La Vélodyssée is the longest-marked cycling route in France at 1,300km.

With nearly 80% on car-free roads, the route is the French part of the 11,000km Atlantic Coast Route (EV-1), one of the most stunning coastal adventures within EuroVelo’s cycling network.

As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, a new Passeport La Vélodyssée has been launched to encourage and engage riders to find and collect 38 wooden stamps that can be found at 60 partner Tourist and Information Offices, located every 20km along the route. In addition, a special collector’s stamp celebrating the 10th anniversary is also available.

In 2018, La Vélodyssée recorded more than 3.6 million cycling outings for a direct economic impact of around €103.6 million per year for the territories crossed.

The project’s tourism partners aim to promote ecological travel, while enhancing the territories from a unique perspective. From the flowery locks of the Nantes to Brest canal, to the cliffs of the Basque coast, passing through the Breton-Vendéen marshes, the Landes forest and the Atlantic islands, La Vélodyssée unfolds its route as close as possible to the ocean for points of remarkable views between land and sea.

Safety and sustainability are key to its success, and the route is 100% marked in both directions. Almost 80% is on greenways or cycle paths, and a network of service areas are distributed regularly along the route for an extraordinary cycling adventure.

La Vélodyssée welcomes electric-assist bicycles (as defined by France’s Highway Code) that comply with European directives, i.e., maximum 250W motor, assistance only when the rider is pedalling, and a maximum speed of 25kph. There are many e-bike rental options available, but note that not all trains are equipped for transporting bicycles.

Initiated in 2008, La Vélodyssée was opened in 2012 as a collective project by over 20 partner communities united around a common ambition, to experience the wild beauty

and landscapes for extraordinary cycling adventures from Roscoff in the north, to Hendaye in the south at the border with Spain.

In 2013, just one year after its launch, La Vélodyssée was also voted “best European cycle route of the year.”

The award-winning route is keen to improve the quality and homogeneity of its range of services to achieve 75% customer satisfaction.

By 2024, La Vélodyssée aims to become the first Atlantic Coast Route country to obtain EuroVelo certification for 100% of its route. In 2022, a total of 91% of the route was eligible for ECS certification.

More and more cities are making active transportation and cycling a priority to build stronger and smarter mobility networks so their residents have access to sensible green options. From efficiency, climate action, health, congestion, parking, equality and independence, the advent of e-bikes and e-cargo bikes is helping to spearhead the movement towards communities based on two wheels. In this edition, we highlight three innovative cities on the move to a better future.

Moncton is currently on the move to almost double its overall cycling network.

Moncton is currently on the move to almost double its overall cycling network. With the fastest-growing population of all of Canada’s metropolitan areas growing at 5.4% annually, Moncton is an excellent city for cycling.

Boasting 44km of separated bike lanes and a network of 80+ trails, city council has approved $1 million to kickstart a robust 2022-2035 Active Transportation Plan that will see over 90km of physically separated bike lanes and an overall network of 141km.

There are also 44km of bike lanes for people cycling on the roadway, which include designated white painted lines, signage, and pavement markings.

Moncton loves cycling all year round.

In addition, Moncton offers 36km of shared streets that include pavement markings and signage to indicate where cyclists should be located within the roadway and to remind people driving to expect people cycling along the route.

Currently, 81% of trips in Moncton are by car; 53% of those trips are under 5km, making them ideal for conversion to active transportation modes.

The city devised four scenarios that measured the impact on potential GHG reductions depending on the percentage of car trips replaced by active transportation. All were positive, and other benefits such as reduced health costs were not factored in.

Moncton has also reviewed various execution options, such as the use of pilot programs, quick-builds, and interim implementation procedures to test out different road and facility designs, aiming to improve mobility.

Bike racks are located throughout the city and on all Codiac Transpo buses. La Bikery Co-operative, a community bicycle centre with space for maintenance and repairs, also manages safe, long-term storage of cycling equipment at three locations for a fee.

A proposed Winter Cycling Network, based on the existing cycling and trail networks, is also on the drawing board, as well as planned projects for the next five years.

Maintenance plans will be included and reviewed over time in five-year increments as new facilities are built and included.

It is also recommended that bicycle parking locations receive winter maintenance, and not be removed on a seasonal basis, as another barrier to winter cycling is the lack of accessible locations for people to park their bikes.

Moncton is on track to create even better conditions where even more people will feel comfortable using active transportation.

Minneapolis’ bikeway network has doubled in size to 255 miles

4.1% of residents ride a bicycle to work

Over the last 10 years, Minneapolis’ bikeway network has doubled in size to 255 miles and, on average, 4.1% of Minneapolis residents ride a bicycle to work, which is one of the highest bicycle commuting rates in the country.

Minneapolis has 16 miles of on-street protected bikeways and 23km of protected off-street bikeways. But the Twin Cities, also known as the City of Lakes, is just getting started.

Minneapolis’ overall Transportation Action Plan, which replaced the previous master bicycling plan, has set a goal to increase the trips taken via bicycle, or micromobility, by 10% by 2030.

Traffic counts also indicate that safety and bicycling go hand in hand, as cycling is growing six times faster on protected bike lanes and trails than on other bikeways.

The new Transportation Action Plan establishes an All Ages and Abilities (AAA) Network to be constructed over the next ten years, as only 49% of the existing network meets AAA criteria. Connectivity within the network is also a priority, to encourage more people of all ages and abilities to choose cycling.

The Minneapolis Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) supports all forms of biking and bicycle safety, and while the number of miles of bikeway has increased by 199% between 1993 and 2017 and the average number of bicycle commuters has grown by 212%, the bicycle crash rate has decreased by 75%.

Bicycle wayfinding signage currently exists at several locations around Minneapolis, including the Midtown Greenway and the newly installed mobility hub pilots.

Providing a similar set of navigational wayfinding signs, designed for those using the All Ages and Abilities Network, will help provide direction to those on the network.

The Bicycle Corral Cost Share Program is designed for businesses with high bicycle demand and limited space in the boulevard or sidewalk area. It’s a low-cost method to provide bicycle parking in spaces occupied by on-street parked cars. Businesses are reimbursed up to 50% of the bike corral cost.

Public bike lockers are also available to rent at various locations, including the University of Minnesota, Metro Transit stations and transit centres.

After 13 years, the city’s Nice Ride bike share program operated by Lyft was recently shut down, but the city has other interested licensees in the Shared Bike and Scooter Program and is optimistic that bikes will be available this season.

Minneapolis ranks as one of the best biking cities in the USA with the third-highest five-year average of bicycle commuting for large American cities (based on the 2017 census).

With over 526km of cycling facilities and a cycling modal share of 19%, the volume of bicycle traffic in Leipzig, Germany has doubled over the past 20 years.

Boasting 225km of separated bike lanes and 205km of cycle lanes, there are approximately 100km of routes shared by pedestrians and cyclists, along with an additional 500km of paths in parks and forests.

There are nearly 600,000 bicycles in the city and 12,000 bicycle racks have been installed, with up to 500 new bicycle racks being added annually.

A recent study shows that 79% of all trips to Leipzig’s city centre are made on foot, by bicycle, or by public transport.

Sustainability is a priority, and the city has developed an Urban Mobility Strategy 2030 with a high priority on bicycles and a modal share goal of 23% while aiming for 70% for walking, cycling and public transport.

Leipzig’s Nextbike public share system offers over 1,500 bicycles. Following a successful pilot for cargo bikes in 2022, the fleet now includes 30 cargo bikes, including nine e-cargo bikes and one unit for wheelchair users in cooperation with other local bike share systems.

The city also supports the purchase of cargo bikes, and in 2019/20 a total of 75 cargo bikes were subsidized for companies.

The city of Leipzig is over 1,000 years old with a population of 2.5 million people in the metropolitan region.

Leipzig is rated as the most liveable city in Germany by the GfK marketing research institution. The city is also recognized as having the second-best future prospects in Germany according to the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI).

One of the most important cycling routes southwest of the city centre is over the Sachsenbrücke bridge where 9,000 cyclists (2020) make the journey daily through the countryside.

Leipzig now offers cargo bike sharing and also subsidizes commercial purchases.

In October 2022, Leipzig adopted its Energy and Climate Protection Programme 2030, paving the way to climate neutrality by 2040. The plan comprises almost 60 complex measures.

Stromer ST3 Pinion Dream Urban eBike that Sets the Bar High in its Class

Stromer’s ST3 Pinion e-bike oozes style and power and will turn heads.

tromer, out of Switzerland, has been making top-end boutique-style pedal-assist urban bikes since 2009.

With a focus on power, tech, range, design and connectivity it was no surprise that in mid-July, just prior to Eurobike, they unveiled their ST7, the world’s first e-bike with Pinion GmbH’s Smart.Shift technology.

Needless to say, we were quite excited when the opportunity came up to access their newly released ST3 Pinion via Amego Electric Vehicles Inc., one of their top Canadian dealers, based in downtown Toronto.

Our satin Imperial Red test model was immediately stunning. This e-bike oozes style and power, and people frequently checked out the ST3 during the test ride with a head nod or a thumbs up. One observer even referred to it as the Ferrari of e-bikes.

In this case, beauty is more than skin deep, as the components truly make this e-bike even more special.

The 9-speed C-Line Pinion sealed mechanical gearbox is harnessed in the bottom bracket area and delivers precise and reliable shifting performance with a gear ratio range of 568%. Virtually maintenance-free, it takes some getting used

to like any new system for changing gears at the right moment for optimal performance, and it was a perfect fit for this classy e-bike.

The Syno Drive II 500W rear-wheel hub motor has an output rated 820W at peak, along with 44Nm of torque. The removable internal Lithium-ion 48V, optional 983Wh battery on our test model is rated for 180km of range — the standard 814Wh battery option offers up to 150km range.

The 245W charger is an impressive bit of kit on its own, with a built-in cooling fan to maintain the electronics as it’s racing to get energy back into the battery.

The Gates carbon drive belt is smooth as silk with zero noise when pedalling, and it’s also virtually maintenance-free — hard not to like a no-lube drivetrain.

The 27.5″ Pirelli Cycl-e ST tires, made to order for Stromer, provided ample grip to get the bike up to speed, and it even absorbed downtown potholes. The TRP brakes with 203mm rotors feature a four-piston front and two-piston rear to bring you from top speed to stationary, with no signs of fading. There’s an ABS upgrade option as well.

connected and informed, while a Roxim Z4E Pro headlight and taillight, along with aluminum alloy fenders, and a Racktime rear rack rounded out this cool ST3 launch edition.

When it’s time for a spin the first thing you’ll notice is the precision handling. The Stromer ST3 feels perfectly balanced and handles power with grace and fluidity.

What also hit me was how quiet this e-bike is — even out of the saddle, full-power starts were virtually soundless. For a motor and gearbox with this kind of power to be so silent is quite remarkable.

I took the ST3 out on city streets and multi-use paths for short trips and longer adventures out on the waterfront. The motor is quite powerful and you may find yourself holding back at times — my eyes were tearing more than once.

How aggressively you want to get up to speed is controlled by the + and – buttons on the left brake handle.

For cruising around the city, I’d normally operate in power assist Level 1. When taking the bike into traffic or when pointed at a hill, I’d click-click to Level 3 and let the powerful

motor get the job done. I had zero issues taking this machine up the steepest hills in the city.

Set into the top tube, the OMNI display is clear and easily controlled while immediately informing you of all pertinent information. It connects via your smartphone to the Stromer app for remote control of the e-bike via a built-in colour touchscreen.

One of the app features is being able to find your bike using GPS. The app can also remotely lock the bike by causing the rear wheel to seize up if the bike is moved before being unlocked.

The bike’s lights start flashing while the alarm is blaring. I tested this feature on a busy street while assuring people that the bike was mine.

Another interesting feature of the rear-hub motor and controller is the ability to charge the battery via regenerative braking, which can feel a bit like a small anchor has been tossed out behind you.

The sloped top tube allows easy mounting and dismounting while the Ergon ergonomic grips and Selle Royal saddle both felt comfortable for me. The horn, which is on the other side of the power buttons, is really fun to use as well.

There is so little to nitpick on this machine, although it is a bit pricey as you’d expect. When I returned the ST3 it was great to chat with the lively staff and techs at Amego about bikes in general and why the Stromer ST3 Pinion is such a great e-bike.

I loved my time on it and found myself describing the ST3 Pinion as the Cadillac in its class while setting a high bar for top-level e-bikes. I even felt a bit guilty not taking my own bikes out on trips — perhaps you’ll feel the same.

Louis Garneau e-Espace P Max Step Urban eBike Delivers Smooth Adventures

Louis Garneau’s top-of-the-line e-Espace P Max Step hybrid/ commuter bike is smooth.

he opportunity to test Louis Garneau’s top-of-the-line e-Espace P Max Step hybrid/commuter bike was like an early Christmas gift. I happily picked up the e-bike in Kanata, Ont. at Kunstadt Sports which is celebrating its 30th anniversary next year and boasts four outlets in total.

Louis Garneau Sports is a storied Canadian brand in cycling. Dating back to 1983, Louis Garneau started with apparel and then launched helmets and shoes, followed by kids’ bikes and racing bikes. Their e-bike line-up has been expanding, and the e-Espace P Max Step is another innovative winner from LGS. Once the knowledgeable staff at Kunstadt Sports helped me get acquainted with the e-bike, including loading it onto my bike rack, I was on my way. Keep in mind the substantial weight of e-bikes, as the e-Espace P Max Step tips the scales at around 65lbs.

A Bafang M400 mid-drive motor with 350 watts of power and 80Nm of torque is the workhorse that powers this e-bike (Class 2 in the USA), which is more than enough assist to reach its maximum of 32kph. The handy throttle lets you

access power on demand, and you can accelerate up to the max assist speed without pushing a single pedal.

Packed with standard equipment that feels premium and sturdy, the e-Espace P Max Step’s frame is built with hydroformed S-6 LT aluminum. The downtube conceals a lockable and removable 640Wh, 36V battery that sports a range of 100km.

With five assist levels, my first ride was a 40km route on local gravel roads which made for an enjoyable outing. Using the highest power-assist setting for most of the journey, the battery used about 85% of its capacity on the excursion.

Increasing through the power-assist levels was smooth and linear rather than punchy, and the 1×9-speed microSHIFT drivetrain also worked well, providing very positive shifts and a decent range of gearing.

The rear microSHIFT Advent derailleur has a clutch which prevents any chain slap, even on the roughest of roads.

The Uding TK700 Pro air front shock with 100mm of travel, including lockout, did a good job of smoothing out bumps.

A Bafang M400 mid-drive motor with 350 watts of power and 80Nm of torque powers your ride.

The Torngat D21-700 rims with Formula disc hubs paired with CST Xpedium ampere reflective 700x45c tires felt competent on gravel and asphalt alike. And the Jieke Y-5 hydraulic disc brakes performed well and were easy to modulate.

In what I like to call the command centre, you’ll find a Bafang DP C230/231.CAN display that allows the rider to select the power assist, monitor speed, battery data, etc. The easy-to-use display also provides an on/off button for the front and rear lights, as well as a walk-assist button.

Compatible with the Bafang Go app that interfaces with iOS and Android platforms, you can access additional options such as utilizing your smartphone’s larger display and accessing battery health data, along with other information.

While riding with my daughter to school, I really appreciated the throttle and the full fenders as it was a bit wet that morning. The throttle works well and is tuned to reach the maximum speed of

32kph in the highest power setting, while shifting gears up to that level.

As I hadn’t recharged the battery, I depleted the remaining 15%, and the final kilometre to reach home with no power assist reminded me of the heft of e-bikes.

The 42V/2A charger, which plugs directly into the battery, took almost eight hours to fully recharge.

Though I left the battery on the bike while charging, it is worth mentioning again that the battery is removable, which is a great feature for people storing their e-bike in a place with no access to an outlet.

More great features are bright front and rear lights, a sturdy rear rack for panniers (rated to 50lbs), and a kickstand.

The Garneau e-Espace P Max Step is a smooth e-bike that delivers a solid feeling. This bike definitely competes in the premium hybrid/commuter e-bike space and would be welcome under any Xmas tree next holiday season.

E-Muli St Cargo Bike Ingenious and Compact - Versatile for any Task or Adventure

ne of the most unique e-cargo bikes in the marketplace is produced by Muli-Cycles GmbH, founded in 2016 and based in Cologne, Germany.

The small company has grown quickly as its collapsible front basket is what differentiates this e-cargo bike from others. Given how innovative their bikes are, we were stoked to test one this fall.

We picked up the latest generation, E-Muli St E6100 Di2 5-speed with chain drive, from Allo Vélo Inc., their Canadian distributor that operates retail stores in Montréal and Vancouver.

The new E-Muli St frame is not only lighter, but this very compact cargo bike is just under two metres in length, making it only 8 inches (20cm) longer than my classic city bike.

Also available in a non-electric version, the new St model features internally routed shift and brake lines, and the new replaceable dropouts offer more flexibility for everyday use.

Nexus Inter-5E rear hub gearing system with Di2 delivers a sensation that is powerful, silent and pleasant.

This was my introduction to automatic shifting, and I was amazed at the comfort zone — no need to change gears, as the system adjusts according to your speed and the force on the pedals.

The control unit on the bike also allows you to calibrate the shifting, and you can even “force” things using two buttons near your right hand — impressive.

The precise design of the E-Muli’s foldable 40x60cm front basket, constructed with a perforated aluminum plate, immediately convinced me despite my initial skepticism. It is indeed very easy to fold and unfold, and the solid front basket with 100 litres of loading is capable of carrying 70 kilos of cargo with a maximum overall weight of 195kg.

This e-cargo bike is extremely practical, especially for apartment dwellers, or if you don’t have a lot of room. It was very easy to park the 60cm-wide E-Muli at the entrance of my apartment, thanks as well to the Ursus Jumbo double kickstand.

The precise compact design of the E-Muli’s foldable 40x60cm front basket is ingenious and very practical.

Transporting kids is also a breeze via the optional seating accessories that accommodate up to two children, including seatbelts. The well-thought-out system is easy to install in about 30 seconds once you get the hang of it. A rain cover is also available to protect your loved ones from inclement weather.

Keep in mind that with two children there will not be much space left in the front basket, but an optional rear rack is also available to attach bike bags for up to 18kg of additional cargo. There’s also space under the child seats, and there are integrated storage compartments in the cover of the folding load basket.

With no cargo, simply fold the front basket and spin in much the same way as a conventional bike, quickly and flexibly through the city — and parking is a non-issue. The versatility of the E-Muli’s front basket makes it a useful companion for a small family, a self-employed worker, or any commuter.

Yuba Mundo EP8 eCargo Bike Delivers for Shopping, Kids & Even Commuting

Yuba’s Mundo e-cargo bike makes shopping or transporting kids a breeze… and fun to boot.

eing a big fan of e-cargo bikes, the opportunity to testride a 2023 Yuba Mundo EP8 put a big checkmark of excitement on my to-do list.

Right out of the box, the Mundo delivers on its unique characteristics, starting with a V6 Electric Cr-Mo frame that sports a head-turning gold paint scheme. Its swept-back Yuba City handlebars and 26-inch wheels separate it from other e-cargo bikes in this class, where 20” and 24” wheels tend to be the norm.

Powered by Shimano’s new powerful 250-watt EP800CRG mid-drive motor with 85Nm of torque designed for e-cargo bikes — also popular with the eMTB crowd — there’s no worry about the Mundo’s ability to get the job done, whatever the load or terrain. The removable 504Wh battery is mounted on the downtube, allowing easy access for charging.

There are four power support modes via a Shimano E6100 display including Eco, Trail, Boost and Walk-assist, which are easily navigated using the handlebar-mounted Firebolt Switch Unit with ride info available on an easy-to-

read, compact display. The system is completely tunable through the Shimano E-Tube app, allowing customization for specific ride demands.

Keeping with the mountain bike theme, a trail-proven Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain paired with an 11-36T Shimano cassette provides accurate shifting to access the right gear choice and dial your cadence to maximize the pedal assist.

Magura’s MT32 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors perform their job quickly and safely to bring this rig to a full stop, even under heavy load. The WTB 26” x 36-spoke wheels with Schwalbe Big Ben 2.15” tires are designed to be strong and durable for heavy cargo bike use.

The stock Herrmans lights are an added bonus — they turn on when the bike is under power for high visibility, putting safety at the forefront.

Our test model featured a selection of accessories, which included a Bread Basket front carrier, rear Monkey Bars, Bamboo Deck passenger feet boards, and Soft Spot padded passenger seats. All were quickly and easily installed,

needing only an Allen key to complete.

Having the bike come stock with rear wheel guards is a smart move by Yuba as you don’t want to carry passengers, especially young children, without them. It was also comforting to know that the Mundo has a carrying capacity of 550 pounds, a weight limit that we did not anticipate reaching.

My first trip on the Mundo was a shopping excursion, and the Bread Basket handily accommodated two grocery bags — it allows up to 50 pounds of cargo — and the aluminum rack bars accommodate standard bungies to easily secure the load.

My backpack was at the ready for any overflow. The Bread Basket also has quick-release skewers, making for simple removal when not needed.

The large, motorbike-inspired Stand Together kickstand was also appreciated, as it’s easy to use and provides a solid base of support while parked.

The swept-back City bars and adjustable stem along with the 26” wheels put you tall in the saddle for a balanced, upright position which helps with visibility and ensures control when out on the road.

A highlight of e-cargo bikes like the Mundo is having the option of transporting passengers via the rear Monkey Bars rack system that can manage up to three kids — note with three kids, panniers may not be an option.

Picking up my 13-year-old daughter, Campbell, was a breeze for some very enjoyable father-daughter bonding time.

She found the padded seats comfortable and appreciated the Bamboo Deck feet boards as well.

The Shimano Steps EP800 e-drive system provided ample power to get everything done that we put it through, under all conditions. I found Trail mode to be the workhorse of the Mundo and used this level regularly, as it was capable to assist under load while saving battery charge at the same time.

On steeper hills especially under load, or to maximize speed, Boost mode was my go-to selection. The bigger tires and wheels helped provide a stable ride, and the additional bit of engineering in the frame as seen in the continuous “stays” provided a stiff, nimble handling machine, with the ability to rail around corners at speed.

Although not designed as a commuter, the Mundo got me to work in fine fashion for the 50km round trip journey. I chose Boost mode the whole way to maximize speed and comfort and avoid excessive amounts of personal energy to get this heavier bike to go faster. I even made it with some charge left to spare.

It’s also worth noting that if regular commuting is part of your ride agenda, then planning ahead for easy and secure parking is a good idea. Like most e-cargo bikes, the Mundo won’t fit in all elevators. Getting it through doorways and tight corners can be challenging, and it’s not the kind of bike to take up stairs.

Yuba describes the Mundo EP8 as a two-wheeled SUV. This beast of a bike will make a fine addition to your bucket list, especially as mobility trends around the world continue to evolve and e-cargo bikes take centre stage as a green transportation solution.
