The move is on as cycling, e-bikes and e-cargo bikes continue to take hold in households and businesses around the globe.

This summer Toronto elected Olivia Chow, its first cycling mayor since the late ’70s, while Colorado launched the USA’s largest statewide e-bike and e-cargo bike rebate program in Aug. Then the European Commission adopted the European Declaration on Cycling in Seville, Spain on Oct. 4, paving the way to unleash the full potential of cycling in the EU. As far as the eye can see, two wheels are in motion as a sensible and green mobility option. From public bike share, to bicycle super highways connecting cities in rural areas, to last-mile deliveries by cargo bikes, hopping on two wheels has never made more sense for families and commercial enterprises. eNEWS Colorado Launches USA’s Largest eBike & eCargo Bike Rebate Program

In late June, Olivia Chow, 66, was elected the 66th mayor of Toronto, edging out runner-up Ana Bailão after a whirlwind two-month campaign that saw more than 100 candidates registered.

An avid cyclist, Chow first became a Toronto city councillor in November 1991 after serving as a school board trustee, when she was elected to what was then called Metro Council. She held that position until 2005, and then became the NDP’s MP for TrinitySpadina from 2006 to 2014.

Chow, partner of the late NDP leader Jack Layton, lost her 2014 mayoral bid, coming in third. She found success this time garnering more than 260,000 votes. Chow breaks several barriers in Toronto politics, becoming both the first female mayor since the city amalgamated in 1998, and the first mayor of a visible minority. June Rowlands was the first woman to serve as Toronto’s mayor from 1991 to 1994.

Hundreds of supporters joined Chow as she biked to City Hall, where she was officially sworn in. Back in 2014, during her campaign, she vowed to create a 200km network of bike lanes in the city.

She is the first mayor who rides a bike to work since John Sewell, the city’s mayor from 1978 to 1980. Chow and her former husband, Jack Layton, both long-time avid cyclists, championed many cycling initiatives in the city, and she continues to support and advocate for safe cycling.

“I feel so blessed to come to my first day of work as mayor of this great city joined by hundreds of cyclists,” said Chow upon arriving at City Hall.

2024 Winter Cycling Congress in Edmonton Feb. 22-24

The 2024 Winter Cycling Congress will be held in Edmonton, AB, from Feb. 22-24. The multi-day event features informative sessions, bicycle excursions, and a community of passionate winter cyclists.

Confirmed presenters include Alex Stieda, the first North American to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, and The War on Cars podcasters Doug Gordon (@BrooklynSpoke), Sarah Goodyear (@buttermilk1) and Aaron Naparstek (@Naparstek).

The Congress theme is A Bridge to A Healthy Future, and the event is hosted by the Winter Cycling Federation and the Edmonton Winter Cycling Congress Planning Committee.

Edmonton boasts an impressive $100 million Bike Plan to expand its active transportation network through protected bike lanes and other infrastructure.

The city is home to the River Valley, one of the world’s largest urban parks that serves as a cycling superhighway.

Olivia Chow Elected 66th Mayor of Toronto

In mid-Aug., the Colorado Energy Office opened its first round of applications for a new program to cut the cost of e-bikes with rebates ranging from $500 to $1,400 US. Following the success of Denver’s e-bike vouchers, the state modified its program based on income levels.

All applicants can receive an additional $300 if they purchase an e-cargo bike, and an extra $100 to cover the cost of essential bike accessories like a lock and/or a helmet.

Participants can redeem the pointof-sale rebate at more than 100 e-bike retailers across the state, which hopes to help approximately 7,000 residents.

The largest statewide e-bike and e-cargo bike rebate program in the USA, it will last until it burns through $6.6 million of funding allocated through air quality legislation signed into law in 2022 — and more rebates are coming.

Solid-state batteries represent groundbreaking technology with respect to energy storage and offer a range of advantages specifically for e-bikes.

A European Declaration on Cycling was adopted in Seville, Spain on Oct. 4 by the European Commission, recognizing cycling as a sustainable, accessible and inclusive, affordable and healthy means of transport, with strong added value for the EU economy.

Guiding principles to boost cycling in the EU include safe and coherent cycling networks in cities, better links with public transport, secure parking spaces, the deployment of charging points for e-bikes and bike highways connecting cities with rural areas.

The Declaration delivers on a pledge made earlier this year by former Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans at the CIE Summit and follows an EU Parliament Resolution in February and a Belgium-led Member State Declaration signed by a majority of EU countries.

With eight principles and 36 commitments to boost cycling and support the delivery of climate targets and objectives of the European Green Deal, the Declaration consolidates the previous announcements and is expected to be finalized by the end of 2023 as a joint inter-institutional commitment.

VanMoof acquired by McLaren Applied

Back in July, the cycling industry was stunned when VanMoof filed for Chapter 11 protection, and it soon after was declared bankrupt by the Amsterdam District Court when it could not secure financing.

Founded in 2009 by Dutch brothers Taco and Ties Carlier, the firm had raised more than $180 million from investors in 2021, claiming to be the “most funded e-bike company in the world.” VanMoof soared during the pandemic, selling around 200,000 of its sleekly designed e-bikes for more than 2,000 euros ($2,176 US) each, but it struggled to shoulder the costs of repairs, long delivery times for bikes, and a shortage of parts.

The new owners plan to invest in VanMoof to stabilize the company and expand its business.

Montréal’s Bixi to Run Pilot Winter Project with Studded Tires Montréal has announced that its Bixi bike-sharing service will be available this winter via a pilot project across seven boroughs. The service usually stops in November which is disappointing to some residents as there are still plenty of nice weather days to bike.

According to Bixi Montréal, about 150 of the city’s 850 bike-sharing stations will be included in the pilot

Bixi Montreal to run a pilot this winter project. “We have to remember that it only snows [heavily] about 10 days per year,” commented Alexandre Taillefer, who chairs the board of Bixi Montréal.

The pilot project will only include traditional bikes — not e-bikes — equipped with studded tires to deal with slippery conditions.

BIXI officials project about 4,000 users a day in the winter months. The bike-sharing stations that are part of the project will be located near metro stations and close to the city’s large Réseau express vélo (REV) bike path network.

Saint-Jérôme Installs 16 Velovoute Parking Units for Bicycles & eBikes

In late Aug., the City of Saint-Jérôme, the Trans Canada Trail and the Le P’tit Train du Nord Linear Park unveiled 16 Velovoute secure parking / charging stations for bicycles and e-bikes at Place de la Gare, the start of the renowned cycling path.

In early Sept., bankrupt Dutch e-bike global company VanMoof was acquired by Lavoie, the electric scooter unit of Formula One engineering and technology firm McLaren Applied. VanMoof was acquired for an undisclosed amount.

Saint-Jérôme, just north of Montréal, marks the beginning of the world-famous 234km P’tit Train du Nord bike path, built over an old railway line in the Laurentians, and the longest of its kind in Canada.

The project was supported in part by a grant from Trans Canada Trail as part of the Destination Development component of its funding program.

McLaren Applied’s Lavoie Acquires VanMoof eBike Company

Volkswagen Financial Services (“VW FS”) and Pon Holdings (“Pon”) are intensifying their partnership in company bike leasing.

VW FS will acquire a 49% stake in the Pon bike leasing subsidiary Bike Mobility Services (BMS) aiming to expand the bicycle and e-bike leasing business in Europe and the USA. BMS is Europe’s leading bike leasing company and operates in six countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, and recently the USA), providing bikes to over 600,000 employees working in 65,000 companies.

Approximately 90% of its bikes for lease are electric, delivered and serviced through a network of 8,000 bike dealers. The European market potential for company bike leasing is estimated to reach 10 billion euros in 2028.

New Executive Director at Vélo Canada Bikes

In May 2023, Samuel Benoit, based in Ottawa, became the new Executive Director of Vélo Canada Bikes. Benoit hit the ground running by launching the organization’s Pedal Poll project with only weeks to pull it off.

Benoit has worked to promote sustainability and education in Canada, India, China, Thailand, Ethiopia, Ghana and the United States. Much of his experience has been with bicycles. As a Programs Director for the youth-led environmental organization The Otesha Project, he has developed new systems and increased earned revenues for their signature cycling and performing tours.

Black Iron Horse: New Majority Shareholder & Sustainability Initiatives arlier this year, the Black Iron Horse cargo bike company based in Copenhagen, announced that the Ebbefos Foundation, a Danish charity organization, had become the majority shareholder. The move is part of the company’s restructuring that will see even more efforts to create sustainable products that support families and professionals around the globe to trade in their cars for cargo bikes.

Founded in 1996, Black Iron Horse unveiled its innovative design offering revolutionary rear-wheel steering that allows 180-degree turns with remarkable stability and maneuverability.

“The fact that all our bikes are designed, assembled and tested in Denmark is one of the key aspects of our identity.

Therefore, our workshop has never left Copenhagen since the company was founded,” commented Jesper Lindahl-Berg, who is one of the original founders and is now a minority shareholder along with Mike Eschen.

The variety of waste results in unique colours for the boxes that are not only aesthetically pleasing but truly help the environment.”

New products are in the works, such as a larger front box to hold more passengers and/or gear. “We source our materials as ethically and sustainably as possible, while keeping manufacturing centralized to reduce the carbon footprint of each one of our products,” added Lindahl-Berg.

he Canadian Electric Bicycle Association (CEBA) was quietly launched back in 2019 by Michael Pasquali, who owns the Electric Avenue E-bikes shop based in Hamilton, Ont. As e-bikes quickly grew in popularity, Pasquali realized that there was a growing need for reliable, in-depth knowledge to help dealers service them. We caught up with him to find out about his passion for cycling and e-bikes, his take on the industry, and the past, present and future of CEBA.

Please tell us about your cycling background.

Michael Pasquali: I started out as a BMX rider and transitioned to mountain biking — now I ride an electric bike. I’ve always been curious about how things worked and when e-bikes entered the market, I dissected one and then put it back together to fully understand how it functioned.

We opened Electric Avenue E-bikes in Hamilton, Ont., in April 2011 and quickly outgrew our small 700-squarefoot shop. We moved to a bigger storefront with 4,000 square feet and also focused on servicing all makes and models of electric bicycles.

What motivated you to start CEBA? MP: We launched CEBA in 2019, as it was evident that the e-bike industry in Canada, which was growing fast, did not have a clear voice. From our perspective, technician training Helping dealers was one of the biggest bottlenecks service e-bikes. as there’s a huge opportunity for traditional bicycle shops to capitalize on e-bike repairs. The key barrier to capitalize on this business is training.

How did the cycling community respond, and how did the pandemic affect CEBA? MP: It was very challenging to launch CEBA during the pandemic. We had 10 students booked for our in-person < 16 > FALL 2023 eBIKES INTERNATIONAL

training class in November 2020, but with Covid and travel restrictions we shifted our training to an online format. Once shops learned about our online e-bike technician training courses, we had a resounding response in the off-season.

You’re sponsored by the Government of Canada, Ontario, Employment Ontario, and the City of Toronto… tell us more.

MP: We worked diligently to foster relationships with the City of Toronto, the provincial and federal government, along with Employment Ontario because it’s necessary to be at the table as stakeholders to help develop policies and provide feedback on behalf of the industry. Early on, we did receive some funding as part of a program by the City of Toronto.

How many people attend your courses?

MP: We decided to limit the class size to six (6) students, as this allows the opportunity to spend time one-on-one with each student, create a better overall learning experience, and ensure everyone has a full grasp of the curriculum.

Are bicycle shops the primary attendees?

MP: We have a high number of bicycle shops attending the e-bike technician training courses as many shops are receiving several calls daily to diagnose and service e-bikes.

The positive testimonials on your website must be satisfying for the CEBA team.

MP: The reviews we receive are absolutely gratifying and really mean a lot. The most satisfying part is seeing how students, who may have no experience with e-bikes, gain confidence after the training.

Is CEBA’s certification of bicycle technicians recognized?

MP: Among other things, we are working towards having the curriculum recognized by our respective partners. Currently, we believe that we are the only e-bike technician training program designed for professionals and people who are entering the e-bike industry.

What are the benefits to bicycle dealers?

MP: Our courses teach technicians how to properly diagnose and fix issues, and learn several proven techniques and methods in a safe, easy-to-learn and functional manner. This also gives a shop the ability to service any make or model of e-bike that has a brushless hub motor, which is one of the most common types on the market today. We also teach the safe handling of lithium batteries, including storage, charging, disposal and best practices as well. Our training has changed the “we only service what we sell” mentality.

What are CEBA’s goals/plans for the future…?

MP: One of our main goals is to have e-bike technicians recognized as a trade and every dealer to have a certified technician so they can safely work on e-bikes — similar to the auto industry. Our plans include continuing to lobby for a federal rebate program for e-bikes, and to encourage the growth and use of electric bicycles across Canada. - BAS

s e-cargo bikes continue to gain traction around the globe for personal and commercial use, the conference, organized by Our Greenway Conservancy, welcomed players from the government and business sectors to exchange ideas and propose solutions to some of the challenges facing this evolving sector of sustainable cycle logistics.

The presentation was in the form of round table discussions starting with a Municipalities panel, followed by Operators and then Manufacturers, with panel leaders posing questions.

Starting with Municipalities, the trio of experts included Jessica McLennan (City of Vancouver), Jason Meggs from Washington, DC (Transportation Research Board), and Aaron Dixon (City of Coquitlam). The three experts reviewed the pace at which changes can take hold amidst provincial transportation and highway act regulations, along with city by-laws. While acceptance is on the rise, in order to advance cycle logistics on a wider scale, green solutions need to meet or exceed the value proposition for delivery companies to convert.

“The NACBC is a stepping stone to bringing validation and collaboration in the cargo bike space. We need a venue where stakeholders can network, evaluate, and work to create the framework for broader market adoption. Following a lunch break that included networking, test rides and taking in the manufacturers showcase, the conference resumed with two workshops that were challenged to address what the future state of cargo bikes and cycle logistics might look like.

The conference, sponsored by the Government of British Columbia, with support from the International Cargo Bike Festival, concluded with closing remarks by organizers Sam Starr and Darnel Harris from Our Greenway Conservancy, who thanked all sponsors and attendees.

“NACBC’s inaugural year had a great showing of leaders from across the North American commercial cargo bike industry, from municipalities, operators and manufacturers.

Between the panels, the manufacturer’s showcase, and the interactive workshops, we are laying the foundations for the future of cargo bikes and cycle logistics across the continent.

The key takeaway from the conference was the importance of collaboration and co-opetition, and the need for a sustainable ecosystem across all stakeholders to accelerate scalability and adoption,” added Starr.

The NACBC was greatly inspired by the International Cargo Bike Festival (ICBF), which is co-locating with Fully Charged Live Europe at Rai Amsterdam on November 24-26, 2023.

First launched in 2003, the global company focuses on all e-mobility trends for e-bikes, e-cargo bikes, and e-scooters for personal and commercial use, along with public bike-sharing schemes.

t Eurobike 2023 in Frankfurt, Bafang hosted a party at their booth to recognize this company milestone and to thank their many supporters, customers, employees and friends. “We extend a special thanks and are grateful to all of you for supporting us over the years,” said company President and Managing Director, Qinghua Wang.

Wang’s business career began after he graduated from the Harbin Institute of Technology back in 1988, where he majored in micromotor control. Working at various companies over the next decade, he gained valuable experience in both motor design and manufacturing. His focus then turned to the application of brushed circuit board reduction motors in the field of electric bicycles.

In 2003, Wang established Suzhou Bafang Motor Technology Co., Ltd. with co-founder Xianbing He, and thus began a journey that would see the new company become a Chinese powerhouse in the world of two-wheeled e-mobility.

The next year, Bafang began exploring business in the European market. In 2005, it unveiled its first hub motor for e-bikes.

Soon after Yu Zhenhua joined the company as a director, and Bafang began developing its own expertise in-house, as management understood that e-bike power systems included the motor and other complex components such as controllers, e-bike sensors and batteries. By training their own personnel, they could manufacture complete systems in-house to become more selfsufficient and have better control over the various technologies needed and their costs, while gaining a competitive advantage.

Aiming to expand overseas, the company opened a subsidiary in the Netherlands in 2011 to tackle the lucrative European market. In 2012, Bafang Electric developed its first-generation mid-mounted motor system, and with this breakthrough successfully entered the mid-to-high-end e-bike market.

Three short years later, the Bafang team won the German 24-hour Rally championship, out-pacing wellestablished competitors along with other teams, demonstrating the strength of its electric power-assist system on the world stage.

In 2017, Bafang established a U.S. subsidiary in California. The following year, they took home another victory in Japan that saw Bafang’s M400 system win the first JNCC simulated crosscountry competition championship. Also in 2018, Bafang Electric’s M800 motor won the German Design Award, and the company established an office in Germany.

That same year, Bafang began a sponsorship with the CST PostNL Bafang MTB Racing Team in collaboration with American Eagle MTB under the leadership of Bart Brentjens, the Dutch former Olympic gold medallist Along the way, Bafang set up its own R&D division with special teams for batteries, motors, controllers, sensors and integration projects, which allowed the company to optimize its operations.

Boasting 343 patents, their R&D division currently represents 25% of the company’s 1200+ employees worldwide, and Bafang’s investment in R&D ranks among the best in the industry.

In Sept. 2019, Bafang opened its first production facility outside of China, in Wroclaw, Poland, a location that offered excellent logistics, supplier and

traffic infrastructure. Two months later in Nov., on Double 11, China’s (and the world’s) biggest shopping festival, the company successfully listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and Bafang Electric (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. became its new official name.

Bafang’s plant in Poland represented a first-phase investment of approximately $16 million with a staff of around 50 employees. Two assembly lines catered to the production of the company’s most important mid-drive systems: M400, M420 and M300. The company also hoped to shorten delivery lead times from six to four months, with a gradual reduction to two months.

“We are very excited to be investing here in Poland,” said Wang at the opening. “This day signifies the beginning of a long relationship between us and the communities of Kobierzyce, Wroclaw and the Lower Silesia region. We are greatly appreciative of all the support we’ve received from the community to make this multi-million-dollar investment become a reality.”

Meanwhile, Germany saw the official renaming of its subsidiary there to Bafang Electric GmbH in 2020, with successes including a move to much larger facilities, while extending the range of its activities and adding new personnel.

In 2021, a third wholly owned subsidiary in China called Bafang New Energy (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. was established to develop and produce high-end batteries.

In May 2022, Bafang Electric shifted its race marketing activities to Italy. The company partnered with Agazzini Bikes and their factory racing team, outfitting their eMTBs with Bafang’s powerful M510 motors that deliver 95Nm of torque.

Then in July 2022, the SGS Standard Technical Service Co., Ltd. certified that Bafang’s laboratory met the high-quality requirements of testing procedures, including the laboratory’s test environment, equipment and personnel professionalism, along with the accuracy and reproducibility of test results.

one of the few companies in the global electric systems industry to own such a facility.

In fall 2022, Bafang introduced its new IOT system consisting of a module, the Bafang Go+ app and the Cloud to deliver a new level of e-bike connectivity and interaction. The IOT housing is small, versatile and flexible according to the manufacturer’s frame specifications.

In 2023, the company launched its latest venture, a T&D division that is focused on the sphere of e-motorcycles.

“After 20 years in the cycling industry, Bafang remains a brand committed to providing innovative technology and unique riding experiences — T&D represents a confident step towards new opportunities and green mobility solutions. We are incredibly excited to share this new venture with Bafang partners and fans,” states the T&D website.

The company’s current lineup for e-bike systems is impressive with 11 M-Series (mid) motors, 12 H-Series (rear hub) motors, 3 H-Series (front hub) motors, 14 batteries, 8 LCD and 4 LED displays.

Bafang Electric operates sales and service centres in the Netherlands, the USA, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Poland and China.

All of Bafang’s production sites are ISO 9001 certified.

Their products are RoHS-compliant for hazardous materials and have the CE label meeting European health, safety and environmental protection standards. The production process is also accompanied by continuous quality controls, and all components are carefully tested during production.

Yamaha Motor launched the world’s first production e-bike back in 1993, and the impressive current growth of electric bicycles around the globe is testimony to the company’s pioneer spirit.

The milestone achievement saw its legendary Power Assist System (PAS) enjoy a successful market debut.

hat began as an initiative back in 1989 to address societal issues in Japan, ranging from the environment to congestion and the energy sector, along with a rapidly aging population amidst a falling birthrate, led Yamaha to focus on the bicycle. The company developed a commuter-style prototype that utilized an electric motor to assist the user’s pedalling force, as a means for greater personal mobility that anyone could enjoy.

Soon after, Yamaha’s new PAS system was unveiled, and the world of cycling and personal mobility would change forever. The novel system was composed of a torque sensor that detected the force being applied to the pedals; a speed sensor to detect the speed of the bicycle in motion; a computerized controller coupled to the electric motor that generated assistive force; a drive unit that transmitted assistive force to the rear wheel; and a battery that powered the system.

In 1995, the Yamaha PAS C system featured a new detachable nickel-cadmium battery that allowed it to be charged on or off the e-bike. Lighter than conventional lead batteries, it was also less susceptible to changes in ambient temperature, provided a more stable current, and had a higher lifecycle.

More innovations saw the Intelligent Flexible Energy System (I.F.E.S.) developed for battery management in 1999.

The system’s computer unit enabled status and data sharing, while monitoring the current, voltage, use frequency, usage conditions and battery temperature.

In 2003, a new, compact and lightweight centre-mounted drive unit, employing a brushless DC motor using rare-earth magnets, was developed. In addition, a new direct-to-chain assist arrangement brought higher efficiency and enabled a smooth and powerful feeling while pedalling.

The first lithium-ion battery for a PAS model arrived in 2004, boasting 32% more capacity and a whopping 25% weight-saving. It also enabled Yamaha to add a new power mode, while a newly designed standing charger made battery recharging a much simpler task.

With the debut of Yamaha’s Brace model in 2008, the company hit the one million mark in e-bike drive unit production. The new Brace featured an 8-speed internal-gear hub, a high-rigidity diamond frame, front suspension shocks, Shimano V-brakes (front and rear), semi-slick tires, and an adjustable handlebar stem.

By 2013, Europe had become one of the world’s leading e-bike markets. Yamaha began supplying bicycle manufacturers in Europe with e-bike system kits including a drive unit, battery, display and dedicated charger. Soon after, the new 3.5kg PW Series e-bike system kit was launched specifically for the EU market and included a compact, lightweight, and high-performance centre-mounted drive unit with a maximum peak torque of 80Nm. Two years later, Yamaha’s YPJ-R electric road bike was released. Utilizing their compact and lightweight PW Series drive unit, it offered an entirely new way to enjoy the recreational cycling experience. In April of that year, the company’s cumulative e-bike drive unit production reached 3 million units.

In 2018, Yamaha Motor launched its first e-MTB model, the YDX-TORC, which featured its top-end PW-X drive unit developed specifically for mountain bikes. The company also made an exciting entry into the rapidly growing e-bike market in the U.S., introducing four new models that featured the YDX-TORC, the Urban Rush drop-handle road bike, the CrossCore fitness bike, and the CrossConnect city bike for everyday use and recreation.

With their expansion, sales were growing. And the next year, Yamaha hit five million e-bike drive units. In 2020, their flagship YDX-MORO Pro eMTB model was released, featuring their powerful nextgen PW-X2 drive unit mounted to Yamaha’s patented Dual Twin® frame.

The new design split the frame into upper and lower sections to “cage” the battery, mount the drive unit, and integrate the suspension components, while delivering excellent chassis rigidity and weight balance. More unique technologies from Yamaha included mountain-ready front and rear suspension and their Quad Sensor System.

In 2022, Yamaha launched three new models aimed at the European market, including the top-shelf All-Mountain YDXMORO 07, the Wabash RT gravel e-bike, and the do-it-all CrossCore RC urban e-bike — all with their even smaller, yet powerful, PW-X3 drive unit.

It was time to celebrate in 2023 in recognition of the launch of the world’s first production power-assist e-bike back in 1993. Yamaha Power Assist Bicycles announced the release of the 30th Anniversary Special Edition YDX-MORO 07, a performance e-bike with racing tradition, pedigree and reliability, created for the next generation of eMTB riders.

In addition, Yamaha Motor Canada launched its e-bike division and introduced three eMTB models, including the YDX-MORO 05, the YDXMORO 07, along with the 30th Anniversary Special Edition YDX-MORO 07 model. Currently available exclusively through a selection of Yamaha dealers, there are plans to expand the line-up and make it available to other independent bike shops as well.

Also new and optimally adapted to gravel e-bikes is a Mini Remote Dropbar control unit, which can be mounted to dropbar handlebars with a larger diameter (1.25 inches), to the left of the stem, and allows riders to expand the range of functions.

According to Bosch, the two new drive units deliver further optimizations with low-noise motors and gearbox concepts. Thanks to a new sealing concept and narrow cranks (Q factor: 6.3 in), the pedal resistance is barely noticeable.

Users can activate Flow+ via the app or Play Store and can opt-in for a monthly ($4.99 US) or annual subscription ($39.99 US). The first twelve months are free, and the premium subscription will be expanded in the future to include further additional services and functions.

Scenic bike routes for kids and families

The recent announcement of $600,000 in new funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation will see a 30km extension to the Algoma Trail Network (ATN) at Hiawatha Highlands and a new skills park at Hiawatha’s Kinsmen Park, which are key parts of the ATN’s master plan.

The newly constructed 7km Farmer Lake trail, one of the plan’s first components, is an out-and-back trail through the stunning Canadian Shield that includes a technical Climb to Canyon section before arriving at beautiful Farmer Lake.

The popular Crystal System has seen an additional 12km of new machine-built trails in 2022, bringing the total to over 20km. With something for every ability, including rollercoaster trails such as Berm Baby Berm, the Crystal System can easily deliver a full day of fabulous mountain biking.

Two more trails that are part of the Hiawatha Highlands network include Pinder, with about 8km of single track making it great for beginners and families, along with the 15km Red Pine system, featuring some of the areas tougher routes. < 42 > FALL 2023 eBIKES INTERNATIONAL

The “Soo” also beckons gravel riders with amazing routes, such as the 45km Maki Road to Red Rock on Lake Superior, which begins and ends at Thomson Farms Cider and Winery.

About 45 minutes east of downtown, the town of Echo Bay boasts loads of gravel route options for all skill levels.

The area also offers excellent, scenic road bike routes on the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and throughout Central Algoma that include bike-friendly marinas such as Hilton Beach, Echo Bay, Bruce Mines and more. Ride west to the rocky beach and bluffs of Gros Cap on Lake Superior for a great 40-50km out-and-back excursion.

For a more leisurely pace, try the John Rowswell Hub Trail, a 22.5km easy multi-use non-motorized trail system that links key cultural, historical and natural areas of the community, including a waterfront boardwalk, picturesque Bellevue Park and the Fort Creek Conservation Area.

The city also boasts one of the largest fatbike networks in Canada, with over 40km of groomed trails at Crimson Ridge and Hiawatha Highlands, which offers 12km of winter riding.

The “Soo” welcomes e-bikes on most of its trails and also features great bike shops for rentals, repairs and services for all of your cycling needs. With so many awesome routes and options nearby, Sault Ste. Marie is fast becoming a bucket list cycling destination.

Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains Gravel Bikepacking Loop is a mountain biker’s nirvana.

For mountain bikers, it doesn’t get much better than the new Endless Mountains Gravel Bikepacking Loop (EMGBL) in northeastern Pennsylvania. The over 400-mile route features mixed-surfaces and more than 32,000 feet in elevation changes.

The awesome trails utilize a large portion of the awardwinning 38-mile Delaware & Hudson (D&H) Rail-Trail in Susquehanna County, recognized as the 2021 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year.

Organizers have also installed a divider route creating eastern and western sections so all levels of riders can enjoy the trail system. The route can be tackled as one mammoth cycling adventure, or riders can bike sections over time.

Class 1 e-bikes are welcome on most trails.

Traversing four counties, including Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming, the route passes through or nearby five state parks, including Ricketts Glen, Worlds End, Mt. Pisgah, Salt Springs and Vosburg Neck, along with the Loyalsock State Forest.

In 2022, Grinduro, the first truly global gravel/mountain bike enduro event series, selected Sullivan County as their U.S. stop. This year, the fabulous event offered four stellar rides there from June 16 to 18.

The area boasts countless accommodation options, from rental cabins to tent and trailer campsites, inns, bed and breakfasts, hotels and more.

For re-fuelling, there are plenty of restaurants, wineries, microbreweries, pubs, cafés and farmer’s markets, along with museums and historical societies, theatres, festivals and events, retreats, spas and wellness boutiques.

The Endless Mountains are also home to the historic

Tunkhannock Viaduct, built in classic Roman-style and considered one of the engineering wonders of the world.

Created in conjunction with the EMGBL, the Endless Mountains Bicycle Friendly Business Program provides the opportunity for various local businesses and organizations in the region to ensure cyclists have hospitable access to repairs and charging stations, supplies and lodging for their trip.

There is an interactive map with various points of interest that riders can use to plot out their trip. The route can then be downloaded via Strava or Ride with GPS. The Endless Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania are a haven for mountain bikers, and the bikepacking route is a “work in progress” that’s being improved over time with feedback and input from testers and cyclists.

The City of Hamilton’s bullish Cycling Master Plan (CMP) outlines a network of approximately 970km of bike lanes, cycle tracks, multi-use paths and other facilities such as paved shoulders and bike boulevards to be completed by 2031.

The city’s current cycling network boasts 793km, which includes 32.4km of separated cycling facilities. In 2022 an additional 14.4km of infrastructure was added, and plans for 2023 include 35km to be installed. An additional seven projects are planned for 2024, and the City is hoping to accelerate the completion of the total network by 25-50%.

Dating back to 1999, its ten-year action plan called Shifting Gears: A New Cycling Plan for Hamilton-Wentworth was reviewed in 2009 and again in 2018. The most recent review in January 2023 includes the consideration and integration of an All Ages and Abilities (AAA) design approach to develop a robust cycling network and minimum grid across the city.

The current city-wide cycling modal share is 1.3%, while in the inner urban area it’s 2.8%. Hamilton’s Transportation Master Plan has a goal of 15% of city-wide trips being made by walking and cycling by 2031.

The City also provides funding to the non-profit Everyone Rides Initiative, which offers subsidized bike share passes, bike-riding training and multilingual services. Hamilton also operates an Adaptive Bike Share Hub.

An All Ages and Abilities (AAA) design is planned.

Bisected by the Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton’s transit system operates the Mountain Climber Program, which allows cyclists to ride a bus up/down the mountain from designated stops at no cost.

In addition, the City has “opted-in” to Ontario’s Electric Cargo Bike Pilot program and Electric Kick Scooter Program (e-scooters) for personal and shared commercial use.

The Hamilton Vision Zero Action Plan 2019-2025 policy has a clear goal: no more fatalities or serious injuries on local roadways.

A number of national and regional trails pass through the city including the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, TransCanada Trail, HamBur Loop and the Greenbelt Route.

Hamilton hosted the Ontario Bike Summit in early May and is hosting the North American Bike and Scooter Share Association (NABSA) Annual Conference in September 2023.

USA Denver is becoming one of the USA’s most bicycle-friendly cities.

Denver, the capital of Colorado, is rapidly becoming one of the USA’s most bicycle-friendly cities. Nicknamed “The Mile-High City,” it boasts a total of 455 miles of bikeways, including on-street and off-street facilities.

Over the past five years, the city has installed 159 miles of new high-comfort bicycle facilities, including protected bike lanes, surpassing its goal to build 125 miles of new bikeways by the end of 2023.

Currently, about 8% of residents commute by cycling or walking. Through the Denver Moves initiative, the city plans to achieve a 15% modal share of bicycling and walking for commuters by 2030.

To support the Denver Moves cycling agenda, the city’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) will speed up implementation of its bike program by coordinating the striping of bike lanes with street paving operations. DOTI will also update its recommended bikeways map.

Denver’s hugely popular e-bike rebate initiative is part of the city’s Climate Action Rebate program, offering $400 on e-bikes and up to $1,400 on e-cargo bikes. The program took off in April 2022 with over 6,500 residents benefitting to date.

Almost half of the redemptions have been for e-cargo bikes.

The e-bike rebate program has displaced an estimated 4.1 million vehicle miles, eliminating 1,447 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually and has saved Denver residents $1 million in fuel and maintenance costs. In fact, the state of Colorado has followed Denver’s lead and launched a $12 million e-bike rebate program, the USA’s largest state-wide initiative of its kind.

Implemented in May of 2021, Denver’s Shared Micromobility Program works with Lyft and Lime to provide about 6,000 bikes and scooters, including almost 600 each of e-bikes and e-scooters, for residents, employees and visitors to get around Denver without a car.

Other initiatives have included the Elevate Denver Bond Program which allocates funding to design and construct nearly 50 miles of the bikeway network vision; Neighborhood

Bikeways which are low-volume, low-speed streets designed to prioritize people who are biking, walking and rolling; and Community Transportation Networks to plan and build lowstress bike projects to connect the city.

In addition, the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC) advises on all matters relating to the use of bicycles as a means of transportation and recreation, including recommendations on the planning, design and development of bike projects.

Denver’s popular e-bike rebates have benefited 6,500+ residents.

Lyon Métropole - population 1.417 million

Lyon Métropole has ambitious cycling goals and plans to become the economic capital of France for bicycles.

With a budget of 500 million euros dedicated to active mobility, Lyon Métropole boasts a cycling network of 1,173km, an increase of 54km over last year, including 233km of protected bike lanes.

The city’s vast Cycling Plan, launched in 2020, hopes to triple the number of bicycle trips by 2026 and is centred around five areas: infrastructure, supporting change, services, safety and the economy.

Part of the initiative includes developing a network of wide and secure cycle paths, with les Voies Lyonnaises (the Lyon Roads) linking journeys between Lyon and its inner and outer suburbs. The “spider web” pattern network, spread out over 40 municipalities, will see 250km by 2026, including 100km of existing paths and a total of 350km by 2030.

Established in 2005, Lyon Métropole’s Vélo’v bike share offers 5,000 bicycles and saw a notable 16% increase in 2022 with 10.5 million rentals overall. In 2020, the system launched e-Vélo’v by converting about half of its inventory into hybrid electric bikes that simply need a battery. Currently, about 2% of subscribers use this option, and 500 e-Vélo’v bikes are available for long-term rental.

In 2022, Lyon adopted France’s ColisActiv’ program, which subsidizes packages delivered by bike to decarbonize urban delivery — a total of 635,000 parcels have been delivered by bike couriers.

To assist in bicycle use and to help combat theft, the number of bike racks has doubled since 2019 to 30,000 (60,000 spaces), with a goal of 60,000 racks by 2026. Secure bicycle parking is also available and will be increased from 1,500 to 15,000 spaces.

In 2019, the regional stakeholders in the bicycle sector created the Active and Sustainable Mobility Cluster (MAD).

That year ONLYLYON Tourisme et Congrès began rolling out the Accueil Vélo (Cyclists Welcome) label, and the urban area boasts 46 establishments supporting the initiative.

Benno Bike’s Boost Delivers Versatile, Fun and Adventurous Mobility Option

Benno Bikes’ Boost CX e-cargo bike is one of the company’s top-selling Etility models.

o some, an e-cargo bike is more than just a great way of getting from A to B. It’s embracing the green movement, a philosophical commitment, an adventure, and an efficient and fun way to move people and gear. The Benno Boost e-cargo bike encompasses all of this, and more.

Benno Bikes was founded in 2015 by Benno Baenziger, who is originally from Berlin, Germany. In the early ’90s, Baenziger followed his heart to California where he cofounded Electra Bikes, and the Electra Townie soon became the biggest-selling model in the USA. At Electra, Baenziger was also part of developing the company’s innovative Flat Foot Technology, a process which slightly modified the frame geometry for a more natural riding position, allowing people’s feet to touch the ground when starting and stopping. After moving on from Electra, this was just one of the concepts that he brought over to Benno Bikes.

Another innovation was the creation of a new e-bike category, dubbed Etility, where agility meets utility, with the aim to inspire and empower people to ride more.

Etility combines design and philosophy, to engineer an e-cargo bike with good handling, performance, comfort, as well as the ability to carry heavy loads and look good while doing it.

The Benno Boost embraces all of these aspects, as the 126mm riser handlebars reach out to you and place you in an upright position. The wider platform Benno Endurance saddle, complete with rear handle, provides optimal sit bone support.

This positioning allows good visual capability in traffic along with balanced support, especially when carrying heavy loads.

The 6061 aluminum alloy Easy On frame, with overside tubes and sloping downtube, makes getting on and off the Boost a breeze. This one-size frame allows shorter family members to ride as well with just a seatpost adjustment. The Boost also comes in a regular frame design, along with a choice of six colours.

Our test model was powered by Bosch’s reliable 250W Performance CX Gen 4 motor. This proven pedal-assist system is a perfect match for e-cargo bikes, as it provides 85Nm of torque and ensures you get moving quickly from a standstill.

The 500Wh Lithium-ion battery provides up to 130km of range, while the assist mode features five power levels, controlled by the bar-mounted Bosch Purion display computer.

Carrying a moderate load and using the top two pedalassist levels, I was able to ride up to about 70km before having to recharge. You can also extend the range by adding an additional battery to the mounts on the downtube.

The Boost is equipped with a quality Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain. The gearing of the 48T front cog and 11-42T cassette makes it easier to keep the cadence high while maximizing the pedal assist, especially on hills or under load.

The Magura MT Thirty hydraulic disc brakes were strong and silent, with an aesthetic 2-finger lever design. The shorter and wider 24”x2.6” custom Benno Dual Sport tires enhanced the fit and control of the ride and definitely helped to smooth out road chatter.

Out on the road, the Benno Boost proved to be a more-than-capable performer, even while carrying a heavy load. I particularly liked how nimble the handling felt while sitting in a very upright, comfort-driven position. It was a bonus having the proven predictability of the Bosch Performance CX motor which complimented the philosophy and engineering that’s instilled in Benno’s Etility DNA. Having the ability to carry passengers comfortably is one of the greatest attributes of e-cargo bikes. My grade 10 daughter, with a 130-pound weight rating, is still perfect game.

While she pretends not to like me picking her up from school on test bikes, I know deep down that she loves the ride.

That includes my svelte, sub-130-pound wife, which made date nights out on the Benno a whole new world of fun. If this was my personal e-cargo bike, I would install a wheel guard and rack pad and have it set-up to carry a single person.

Supernova Mini 2 front/E3 rear lights

The Benno Boost comes stock with rear rack, fenders and Supernova Mini 2 front/E3 rear lights. Our test model came with a number of optional accessories, including a Sport Front Tray, Utility Front Tray Bag, High Rail and Utility Pannier Bags.

The Sport Front Tray was bright red, which added an attractive pop to the grey anthracite-coloured test e-cargo bike. The Utility Front Bag had massive space and easily rolled down to be secured with Velcro and clips when riding.

The rear rack coupled with the High Rail offered ample space for securing a variety of items, including my large garbage bag full of recycling that I took to the depot. The diameter of the rack bars was just the right size to hook a standard bungee cord. An added bonus for both the Sport Front Tray and High Rail is that they allow you to fit a standard-size milk crate — a time-tested bike-carrying accessory that doesn’t fit on all e-cargo bikes.

The Utility Pannier Bags each hold 30 litres and easily managed my shopping bags full of food. Plus, you can roll and secure the pannier covers in an open position to extend the size of the bags as needed.

The maximum gross weight for the Boost is 440lbs/200kg (rider, bike, cargo), and for the rear rack it’s 130lbs/60kg.

A dual kickstand does not come as a stock item but is highly recommended. Our test model was equipped with one, and while not as robust as some e-cargo bike kickstands, it did the job.

Trek’s New Fetch+ 4 An eCargo Bike That’s Destined to Replace a Car in Your Daily Life Trek’s new Fetch+ 4 e-cargo bike is ready to make you and your kids smile.

o get around a city with ease, throw a leg over an e-bike.

But if you’ve got kids to shuttle around, the ideal cycling solution is an e-cargo bike. We were stoked to test Trek’s new Fetch+ 4 that’s destined to replace a car in your daily life.

It’s easy to see how cargo bikes are part of the mobility transformation, as my kids loved jumping into the front cargo box for an up-front adventure. The two built-in EVA seats feature a nifty ability to recline in three positions (upright, chill mode, and sleep mode), and come with five-point safety harnesses and headrests which can be easily removed and stored.

Custom options include a child bench, infant seat adapters, and a fully enclosed rainfly which can double as a sunshade during hot summer days.

The maximum cargo box weight of 175lbs (80kg) means that up to five children can be whisked around, and the total max capacity is 551lbs (250kg). The sturdy box is made of strong polyethylene plastic (PE), and my crew was always comfortable and eager to hop on board.

Powered by a 250W Bosch Cargo Line mid-drive motor that features 85Nm of torque, the low-maintenance Gates CDX belt drive helps to smoothly get you up to speed. The rear wheel features a unique Enviolo internal gear hub with an over 380% gear range to tackle virtually any hill. What’s unique is that it’s an infinitely variable resistance hub, so there is no indexing in the twist grip shifter. Ease off the power, adjust the shifter to increase or decrease the resistance, and then start pedalling again.

The drivetrain is very smooth and quiet, and I’d start the Fetch+ Two built-in EVA 4 rolling in an easy gear, and then seats come with twist to a higher level of resistance five-point safety to get up to speed. That’s when harnesses the kids really fell in love with this e-cargo bike, as they’d tuck their noses up to the front of the box.

Operating the electronics is a breeze, as the Bosch smart system is activated by a switch on the same controller that changes the levels of assistance. The colour display indicates the assistance level, with red being the fastest.

The Enviolo internal gear hub I usually rode a level or two down from the top, as it provided more than enough extra speed in bike lanes. Step the Fetch+ 4 into traffic, switch up into the red zone, and this e-cargo bike will easily maintain its 32kph limit.

Also on the controller is a five-level indicator for the massive 750Wh Bosch PowerTube battery that has ample capacity. It takes about six hours to fully recharge the battery.

Like any new ride, and if you aren’t used to a box-style bike, it takes some time to get comfortable. The low centre of gravity and cable steering keep things stable, and the front wheel turns a bit less than the input on the handlebar.

After a few rides, I was able to slalom the Fetch+ 4 around potholes and could do tight, slow-speed turns with ease. Given the size of e-cargo bikes, you also need to be more attentive at higher speeds as the smaller front wheel can wander slightly from side to side — not a big deal, as you always need to be paying attention anyway.

Like all front box e-cargo bikes, it fills the bike lane and you’ll need to be patient until you’re able to safely pass slower riders. Also, in narrow bike lanes between parked cars and the curb, it takes a little more input than a standard bicycle.

The stock Schwalbe Pick-Up reflective tires, Tektro 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes with 2.3mm thick rotors, and SR Suntour Mobie front shock with 50mm of travel are all excellent. I never had an issue with traction, accelerating or stopping. Even on a rolling gravel path, there were never issues with traction.

We loved the front shock as well, as it took on expansion cracks, potholes and speedbumps with ease to keep things smooth for the passengers.

There’s an abundance of standard equipment on the bike, including commuter-friendly custom fenders, front/rear lights that come on with the motor, and a bell. Plus, there’s a Bosch SmartphoneGrip holder with a built-in charger.

The TranzX dropper post, added comfort and was useful when coming to a stop as it allows the seat to be lowered so that your feet can come down more easily to stabilize things.

On the back is a frame-integrated Bontrager rear rack with a 27kg weight limit that works with accessories from the MIK line of equipment. All of this equipment is available through Trek’s MIK ecosystem.

The built-in Abus rear ring lock lets you make quick pitstops, and the Bosch Connect module allows you to activate the system’s e-bike alarm via the Flow App for extra anti-theft protection.

When the bike is parked, the Fetch custom double-leg kickstand keeps the e-cargo bike secure and stable for loading and unloading — kids can easily climb over the sides without the rider having to balance the bike.

The only issue that I came across was the battery cover, as it’s held on by magnets, and it can easily get dislodged by knee contact when getting on and off the e-cargo bike.

I can’t say enough how much the kids loved this e-cargo bike and being up front to enjoy every adventure. This is a homerun of an e-cargo bike, as literally a family could be transported to a ball game using it.

Trek has included so many useful details that make the Fetch+ 4 a treat to operate, and anyone that owns this e-cargo bike will be looking for opportunities to ride it.

The “tadpole” design (two wheels in the front and one wheel at the back) makes for an extremely stable ride, especially at low speeds. No matter how wiggly the kids get up front, the Winther eCargoo stays the course.

Ideal for inexperienced or nervous riders, the eCargoo is also fun for seasoned cyclists as well. With one of the smallest turning circles on the market and a well-proportioned front “bucket,” the eCargoo is easy to navigate through narrow bike lanes, around curbside cafés and into crowded garages.

No kids to carry? The front cargo area has 278 litres of capacity, similar to the trunk of a small- to medium-sized car, and an overall maximum capacity of 200kg including box and rider. We tested a variety of loads, including a Costco run for a family of five, bags of soil and plants from the nursery, two large and energetic dogs, and even our Christmas tree! The

The battery has a range of 50-125km eCargoo carried it all with ease. In fact, the bike handles best when it has a big load up front.

The Shimano STEPS E6100 motor delivers 250 watts of power with a maximum torque of 60Nm, making it easy to pedal even the heaviest loads uphill or into a headwind. The e-assist feels natural and smooth, thanks to the mid-drive placement and the Shimano Di2 electric shifting which is exact, accurate and works all winter.

We also loved the automatic gear shifting option via the Shimano internal Nexus 5 hub and the feature that returns the bike to first gear when stopped — no more struggling to get going after a sudden stop!

The 504Wh Li-ion battery, tucked between the rear wheel and rear rack, has a range of 50-125km on a single charge, depending on weather conditions, load and terrain. Charging takes only a few hours, and it automatically powers down when the battery is full.

Safety is the number one priority for Winther; the cabin is designed to absorb and distribute shock to minimize impact to passengers and rider. The aluminum rollbars offer head protection in case of tipping, while also supporting the weatherproof Cargo Cover which has reflective details for extra visibility at night.

The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes provide secure, stable stopping power no matter the load or weather conditions.

It should come as no surprise that a company whose name means “winter” in Danish would make a cargo trike that excels in snowy conditions.
