TOP TIPS Motoring matters

With car insurance prices continually on the increase and my usual desire to keep an eye on the pennies, I’ve been looking into ways to be adequately covered – and save money, on my children’s behalf. As the parent of teenagers, the dawning of their 17th birthday heralds an increase in outgoings of a vehicular variety – and since the introduction of gender neutral pricing, it’s no cheaper to have daughters than sons! Learning to drive certainly isn’t inexpensive – but when they’ve passed, that’s where the fun starts! Newly qualified drivers are always classed as high-risk, due to their lack of driving experience, so the aim here is to reduce their premiums, whilst ensuring you’re staying well within the law and that the insurance will pay out in the event that it’s necessary.

Think about getting a •Telematics device (black box)

fitted, which monitors your driving habits and can result in a refund or cheaper premium the following year, for good driving

Increase the policy’s voluntary excess, payable if you claim

Reduce the annual estimated •mileage – but only if you won’t be exceeding your estimate

Top premium-reducing tips include:

Add a more experienced driver to the policy - make sure the stated main driver is correct, though, or your insurance will be invalid

Consider Third Party, Fire & Theft instead of Comprehensive cover – if that is sufficient for your needs Choose a car with a smaller •engine size - usually means a lower insurance group

No mods – modifications to a car will increase the amount you’ll pay to insure it 4

Take a Pass-plus course – makes insurers feel you’re more conscientious and is beneficial to your driving skills and confidence – win / win!

Shop around – online, through •comparison sites; also try local

brokers who can search the market for the best price on your behalf, and help if you need to claim

Executors and Beneficiaries – Beware of Penalties from HMRC In a recent case a beneficiary has received an £87,000 penalty from HM Revenue & Customs for failing to tell his father’s executors about a cash gift he received the year before his father’s death.

It is the responsibility of executors to make enquiries of the deceased’s family of any lifetime gifts made in the preceding seven years. If gifts are made and executors have not been thorough in their research, penalties as much as one hundred percent of the tax that is now payable can be due.

In this case it was found that the executors had behaved properly in speaking to the family beneficiaries. The beneficiaries were asked if they had received any gifts from their late father in the preceding seven years. No disclosures were made and the executors duly submitted the Inland Revenue form on this basis. Two years later HMRC received an anonymous tipoff and it became clear that the beneficiary had received a gift of £450,000 from the deceased. He was charged £47,000 in inheritance tax and 65% of the potential loss of inheritance tax revenue linked to

the gift. The total came to over £110,000.

The beneficiary appealed but his appeal was rejected, finding that he had deliberately withheld the information.

This should serve as a warning not only to executors but also to beneficiaries that they must take care to respond honestly and openly to executors’ enquiries.

Instructing a solicitor to make sure that executors are covered against any such penalties for non-disclosure would be a prudent safeguard.

For more information please contact Lucy Gordon, Partner at Spratt Endicott Solicitors, on lgordon@se-law.co.uk or call 01295 204045.

Family Focus

Be a lifesaver!

Babies and toddlers are notoriously accident prone, and most of the time we can keep them safe, but would you know what to do if your little one was choking, or fell down some stairs?

As parents and grandparents, we can spend many hours a day looking after young children, in a whole range of environments, with a variety of potential hazards we can’t always foresee. By knowing how to handle even the most worrying of situations, you can just feel that little bit more confident, that you have the First Aid skills to use,

22

should something unexpected and awful happen. Knowing the signs of shock, a head injury or other serious situations, and what you should do in these scenarios, means that we truly can be lifesavers.

A variety of organisations run courses, designed to teach parents and carers the basics of Paediatric First Aid. Your local college, children’s centre, Pre-school or Red Cross centre may offer courses at a very reasonable rate – sometimes even free of charge. Usually the training takes most of a day, but can be studied in the evenings instead, so do ask for details of a course to suit you. Costs are reduced if you book as a group, so why not ask around other parents and do the training together – you may even be able to get the instructor to come to your venue.

Subjects covered by the course will include how to accurately assess a casualty, what to do if a child isn’t breathing, relieving choking, controlling bleeding and looking after an unconscious person. Keeping calm in all of these situations isn’t easy if it’s your child that is unwell, but taking a First Aid course will give you the confidence and skills to cope – so what are you waiting for? Book your training today!

Call your vet We all love giving treats to our pets, but there’s a very good reason to buy those that are specially made for your dog – some human foods can be fatal to our canine companions. If you’ve often given your pet some titbits from the table, or a few leftovers after dinner, it can come as quite a shock to find that many foods that we love could harm or even kill your beloved dog.

Pets Corner Potential poisons lurking in your fridge All of the following foods can cause illness or even prove fatal, so if you know your pet has just had an accidental chocolate binge, or eaten his way through a punnet of grapes, your next call should be to your vet, who will give you the right advice to help your animal. Alcoholic drinks Avocados Cherries Chocolate Coffee Garlic Grapes Onions Raisins

Rhubarb leaves Sweeteners Many other foods, plants and household products aren’t good for pets, either. If you’re worried that your pet has eaten something he shouldn’t, please don’t wait for him to look unwell – call your vet for advice without delay.

With two wonderful Bank Holidays this month, I’m hoping for some super sunny weather – to pack up a picnic and have a fun day out with the family. I’m a little weary of soggy sarnies and tepid tea, so this month I’ve made it my mission to try out some much tastier options, and very yummy they are, too – all in the name of research, of course! My perfect picnic doesn’t need cutlery, or really even plates – sharing tasty mini-snacks is so much more fun, and there’s nothing to lug home and wash up! Reusing lidded plastic icecream or takeaway tubs as serving dishes keeps your food from getting squashed and means that you can pop the empties in a recycling bin whilst you’re out and about.

Prepare to picnic!

For four people: Carrot & Cucumber sticks with Hummus for dipping – peel and chop into munchable batons, add a mini tub of hummus in your favourite flavour

Mini bagel pizzas – split and toast mini bagels, spread with tomato puree, sprinkle with grated cheese and grill until melted and bubbling. Leave to cool completely before packaging them up, or they’ll go soggy.

Chicken & pepper kebabs – roast two chicken breasts (or a meat-free alternative) in foil and your choice of seasoning, cool, unwrap and chop each into 12 chunks; deseed and coarsely chop a red pepper and alternately thread pieces of each onto cocktail sticks Mini cheesecake sandwiches – mix light soft cheese with a little icing sugar ( to taste), use this

30

mixture to coat one side of mini biscuits, spread fruit puree or jam on another biscuit and stick together – mess-free pudding, easy to transport and delicious!

Water, juice or wine – depending on guests!

All you need now is super weather, good company and a lovely view – and the picnic blanket, of course!

BRACKLEY SOAPBOX DERBY Sunday June 19th 2016

Now a firm favourite annual event within the town the 2016 Brackley Soapbox Derby will take place on Sunday June 19th on the High Street. From 2.00pm onwards soapboxes will run on the main road down the hill to the finish line at the Market Square car park. The race is open to three classes, juniors under 15 years of age, adults 15 and over and once again a premier class for the more sophisticated constructor. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for the fastest three in each class and a separate trophy will be presented to the soapbox judged to be the best turned out cart. To underline the popularity of the event entries have already been received from various parts of the country and enthusiastic local soapbox builders are urged to get their entries in as soon as possible as entries will be limited this year. Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 apprentices will also be racing their SB16 soapbox on the High Street in the premier class which they won in 2014 and 2015. Brackley Soapbox Derby will once again be supporting The Katherine House Hospice and a soapbox will be running in their name with an opportunity to win raffle prizes in support of the charity. Brackley Soapbox Derby is a family event and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great afternoon. Snacks, drinks and other attractions will also be accessible in the Market Square during the afternoon. Entries are still available and further information including entry forms and technical regulations can be obtained on the soapbox website

GARDENING THIS MONTH... Written by Chris Swallow Swallows Nursery

Winter of record breaking rainfall Having had a pretty wet and miserable winter with very little sunshine, and a pretty slow start to the spring, surely May is going to come good and hot. It must at least dry up anyway!

Jobs in the Garden So numerous of course are jobs to do this month. If you do nothing else, then at least keep new plantings watered during dry spells, until established. Spring flowering plants that have finished blooming are best pruned now, to keep their shape. For example Clematis montana and its varieties can be cut back now, to

avoid a lot of ‘leggy’ growth. Keep on top of your topiary! Regular trimming will give you that perfect shape you are looking for. Classic subjects are box and yew, both very forgiving if trying to cut back to a neglected shape. Also worth a try is the underrated holly, including variegated forms which add more interest. Hollies benefit from regular trimming and will really thicken up, but don’t forget to feed these plants too. Weed control is vital before they set seed or ‘strangle’ your favourite plants. Bare ground can be kept clean by hoeing any young weed seedlings coming through. Better still, mulch over the bare areas to discourage weeds, trap moisture and feed the soil. Night frosts can still occur this month. Be prepared to protect summer bedding plants and other vulnerable plants with layers of fleece. Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham est1990

Kitchen Garden You may need to thin out vegetables sown earlier in the year, and continue sowing successional vegetables. Don’t forget to protect carrots and parsnips from carrot root fly by covering with fleece or erecting a vertical barrier (60cm high) of fine mesh or fleece.

Looking Good So many will peak in May, not least our own hawthorn and its colourful offspring. This fine garden tree has a profusion of tiny ‘may blossom’ flowers that festoon the branches, followed by glistening red ‘haws’ in

autumn. Try the form ‘Rosea Flore Pleno’, a beautiful pale pink variety, or the more recent introduction ‘Crimson Cloud’, a dark pink form with white centres to the flowers. Hardy geraniums start to flower in late may. ‘Johnson’s Blue’ (see pic) with its clear blue flowers is a lovely variety. If sheered over after the first flush it will shoot again and hopefully produce more flowers in late summer. A dainty little plant for semi shade is the genus Epimedium with its exquisite flowers in shades of white to pink and red and also yellow and orange

strong, getting the ball in the net at the other end has also been the problem and not helped by the loss of leading scorer Steve Diggin with a broken arm for many weeks. Young players brought in on loan by manager Kevin Wilkin has made a big difference since February to give Saints a fighting chance of retaining Step 2 status. Whatever happens, the job of building a team for next season begins once the season concludes. Kevin Wilkin arrived mid-season so will have the opportunity to bring in fresh faces if he chooses and to work with his squad in the close season making the next campaign a different ball game altogether. Stay in touch with the news of Brackley Town on the club website.

Brackley's Glenn Walker on the ball

2015-16 has been a fourth season at Step 2 for Brackley Town that is National League North, just two steps away from the top four league divisions – a mighty achievement for our small club in our small town. It has been tough going again this season after last year’s late, late

escape. And going into the final few games the situation in and around the bottom of the table could not be tighter. By the time you read this the team’s destiny may be decided. Away form has been a big problem with a first away win not arriving until the New Year. Defensively www.brackleytownfc.com

8th Brackley Wine Festival The 8th Brackley Wine Festival will provide the opportunity to taste and buy wine from a huge world-wide range and also support local charities. Plans are being finalised for the festival being held at Brackley Town Hall on Saturday 30 April between 12.00 noon and 6.00pm. Stallholders will include Members of the Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants and local independent suppliers. The festival gives the opportunity to taste new wines, guided by experts, where quality and flavour take precedence over brands and mass production.

The festival is organised by Brackley Rotary Club.

The event organiser, Rotarian Trevor Davies, said, “The festival is a tasting opportunity for wine

lovers to discover and buy new wines without the risk of the wine not being to their palate.” “Proceeds from the entrance fee of £5 will benefit Rotary charities. Further information can be found on the festival website:
