Article of the month

As high summer kicks in most of us dream of hot days, warm nights, having barbecues with friends enjoying the Outdoor Room. If the weather obliges there’s a lot to be done to make sure your garden is an outdoor space to be proud of. Cut back the foliage on early flowering hardy geraniums, poppies and delphiniums. It stops the plant looking tatty, new foliage soon comes back and you should get another flower display later in the year. Keep the feeding any containers of flowering and fruiting plants (tomato feed, Miracle gro etc) to keep them going til autumn.

Arrange some pots of herbs close to the Barbie

for easy picking of seasoning for food or sprigs of mint for the Pimms. If you want to enjoy the scent of flowers rather than charcoal then there are so many options this month. Lilies can have amazing heady scents. Use a garlic spray on the foliage to deter the pesky red beetles. Trachelospermum jasminoides or star jasmine (see pic) is an evergreen climber with white jasmine scented flowers. It likes a sunny sheltered spot and is very on trend for greening the verticals in the garden. For shadier spots try honeysuckle. The foliage is less well behaved than the star jasmine and its likely to want to exceed its space but for reliable flowering and scent it can’t be beaten. Sweet peas are a cottage garden style stalwart and need picking regularly to keep them

flowering. Of course roses

pack a pungent punch too, and repeat flowering David Austin roses (see pics) guarantee a long season if you keep them dead headed. Back to those herbs, the volatile oils contain the distinctive scents in Mediterranean herbs like lavender, rosemary, oregano. What a treat for your senses in the garden this summer.
