Being a midwife does not only defined by assisting women in childbirth. The general dictionary definition are the misconception of how people view midwives. The world is constantly changing and as a part of the world we must be able to change with it as John Dewey, the man responsible for the success of progressivism, realized. Dewey relied on the scientific method to develop his ideas and found that books are no substitute for actually doing and experiencing in the learning process. I agree with Dewey on this point because in my classroom I plan to allow students to experience as much as they can first hand. Actually, being part of or performing an experiment helps to teach students because they are able to apply what they are learning to the real world. My Philosophy of Education is closely related to what the Essentialists and Perennialists believe. Like the Essentialists, I believe there should be a back to the basics approach to teaching. The curriculum should focus on subjects such as writing, reading, history, science, and math. These are essentials that all students should know. There should be mastery of material of the essentialsubjects before the students move on to the next grade level. The curriculum should be rigorous and the standards should be set high. The high standards that are set for the students should strengthen the student's intellect and enhance their moral qualities.

Student's interests should be widely expressed in extra curriculum activities.
The teacher should ultimately decide a lot of the curriculum based on the needs of each student. This brings me to the part of Progressivism that I believe to be very influential in the way students learn and how they increase their level of knowledge and skills. Students should be grouped by abilities. When I observed a 4th grade class this semester students were working at their own levels and with other peers at the same level. The students were working on the exact same subject matter, but the level of difficulty was unique to the individual. The desks were set up in small groups for the students to work together on material. The students took tests every few months in order for the teacher to examine their level of learning and place them with the appropriate group and correct learning material. The students improved overall from test to test. No two students are alike. Working at their own level and with others at the same level increase their ability to learn and increase their level of knowledge to where it should be.

Until now, I have simply accepted education as it has been presented me, blind to fact that there was any kind of well developed philosophy behind it. I personally believe that while learning concepts and ideas that will always be prevalent regardless of progressing time and that thinking analytically is crucial to personal growth and education, that this is not a practical approach and certainly not one that every student would benefit from it. Somewhat similar to perennialism, essentialism also focuses on absolutes, believing in a certain knowledge standard, teaching students the fundamentals of math, science, literature, history and language, basically the layout of our days in middle school. Often referred to, as "back to the basics" essentialism is a dominant approach to American education. Although I disagree with some of the more recent campaigns that have branched from it, such as No Child Left Behind, I do believe that its highly effective and gives students the opportunity to balance their education among the essential "basics" as well as draw connections between them. It was also discussed that essentialism produces the 2 by 4 students, suggesting a basic education. I believe that learning basics will always be important, I partly believe this because it is how I have been educated and I consider myself to be a well–rounded human being with a basic knowledge of the core topics because of it. Literacy Defined
Literacy embraces reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Integrating all of these into a literacy program is key. Teachers must provide endless and ongoing opportunities for their student to read, write, listen, and speak. There are many components that make up literacy. In order to effectively teach students these components the teacher must model the concept for the students. As teachers, we can't expect or assume that the student already knows what we expect of them. Modeling gives students a basis of what to go by. Comprehension is also an important factor when speaking of literacy. Students should be taught the many strategies that will help them with comprehension and word recognition. In my experience in a first grade classroom I used many of these strategies. Within my lessons I included the activation of prior knowledge to construct meaning, the use of context clues in a sentence, pictures clues, predicting, and drawing inferences about ideas or characters in the text. I always made sure that I modeled the strategy for the student before they set of to do it.
Components of My Literacy Program

The components of my literacy program will work together. I will incorporate shared reading and writing, guided reading and writing, independent reading and writing, read alouds and write alouds, and cooperative reading and writing within my classroom. Motivation will be key for my literacy program. I know that if the students are highly motivated then they will learn more readily. I will build motivation in my classroom by having a positive, warm learning environment. I will have a variety of literature of different genres and of different levels within my classroom. I will also have a variety of areas and centers for the students to participate in.
I will design my lesson in such a way that each child can actively participate in the learning process. I believe in positive reinforcement
Philosophy of Education

Teachers, unlike any other professionals have the chance to shape and change young lives. For this reason, I believe that teaching is one of the noblest professions that one could choose. While the nature of students may be different, I feel the purpose of education should be similar to those performing as public educators. My overall view of the purpose of education is to make those whom I teach better. Primarily, I want my students to be intellectually better when they leave my classroom. Therefore, I would have successfully educated that child to become a strong moral citizen in our society, hence the reason why I believe this theory has influenced my personal learning philosophy. John Locke's theory of children being blank slates when they are born really struck a chord with my own reasoning of the mechanics in how a child is able to learn from birth to youth. Before I knew Locke's theory existed, I reasoned that babies are blank slates from the moment of conception and not at the moment of birth. I am twenty–eight years old, and have only decided to become a teacher within the past two years. I agree with this completely due to personal experiences that have made me view reality nowadays way more differently than I did before. Society is the way it is today because we citizens, as society, have made it this way. Society is drunk off freedom and believes everything should be handed to them with no questions asked. The roles of a teacher are so many and so varied that it is impossible to list them all, but one of the most important is preparing students to learn, not only in the classroom, but everywhere, and for the rest of their lives.
