Kennedy is committed to principal challenges at BHS By Olivia L. Construction is underway for workforce housing on Deming Road.

New workforce housing project fills niche need Names being taken for applications By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen Within the next two years, Berlin will provide new opportunities for modern, affordable housing to an underserved segment of the population. Metro Realty Group Limited is in the construction phase of an 88unit project on Deming Road — rental housing built in a newly created “workforce zone.” The project fills “a missing niche,” said Hellyn Riggins, director of the town’s planning department. People who have a new job, or not enough equity to buy a home yet, may find this suits their housing needs without breaking the budget. “There are people raised in Berlin who would like to stay here and can’t afford a house. If qualified, this gives them a chance to live here,” she said. Workforce housing zoning was adopted by the Planning and Zoning

Commission in 2010. The zone is described as a multi-family development and is planned on a cooperative basis between the town and a developer experienced in mixed-income multi-family workforce housing. The design standards are set to ensure a high-quality residential environment that is compatible with neighboring properties. The project will help Berlin meet the 10 percent affordable housing goal set by state statutes, Riggins said. “It’s 100 percent affordable housing,” said Chris Nassau, marketing and leasing director at Metro. There are two phases to the project: Rivers Edge, on Bacon Lane (off the east side of Deming Road), which will have 16 units and be completed by the end of the year; and Fieldstone Crossing, on Deming Road to the west, which will have 72 units and be completed sometime in 2012. Of the total units, 60 will be two bedrooms and 14 will be handicap accessible See Workforce, page 7

twice the size of Stafford High and, while that will be different in a lot of ways, there are many similarities, he said, adding that as a member of the New England Schools and Colleges accredidation team, he’s familiar with school systems of all sizes. “The kids are the same, they are eager to learn,” Kennedy said. Furthermore, Berlin has a committed faculty and parent base, as did

Reality star Countess LuAnn began life in Berlin By Daniel Jackson Special to The Citizen The glamourous life of one of the stars of The Real Housewives of New York City, a Bravo channel reality show, began humbly enough right here in Berlin. In an interview with The Citizen, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, 46, recalled her life growing up in a small town before she lived in Europe and married a count. The former LuAnn Nadeau said, “It was a good, healthy way to grow up.” She remembered ice-skating on the ponds, playing tag football with her four brothers, snowmobiling during the winter and swimming in the East Berlin pool during the summer. “I was a tomboy.” After graduating from Berlin High School, Countess LuAnn went on to study nursing at Goodwin College. She developed a passion for service while helping at the Ridgeview Health Care CenSee Reality, page 5 Countess LuAnn

Kennedy Continued from page 1 Stafford, components that will help him to succeed. In addition, with the size of the school, comes more staff, such as two assistant principals compared to one at Stafford. Kennedy replaces Matt Harnett who left after just one academic year to take a job nearer to home. Kennedy, who was appointed by the Board of Education last week, said he was asked by many constituents, how long he planned to stay in Berlin if he took the job. “It’s an important question,” Kennedy said, describing himself as “very committed.” He pointed out his 15 years as principal at SHS — 18 years total in that district — as an example of his commitment. He acknowleged that the quick turnover in the position the last time

around did make many people more atuned to the issue of commitment to the community. “I’m not fickle, I stick with it,” he said. “I don’t take the decision to move lightly. I looked at Berlin very carefully.” The goals for BHS are complex and require a person who will see them through, Kennedy said, adding that he is that person. He expects to see the program upgrades and the upcoming renovate-as-new construction project “which will take several years to complete, through to fruition.” Superintendent of School David Erwin said Kennedy’s longevity at his prior job was one of the favorable factors the applicant brought to the table. “We looked at the length of time he was a sitting principal…it’s not easy to be the principal in one place for 15 years.” Other qualifications that made Kennedy stand out, in

the final field of six top candidates, was his experience at SHS with the renovate-asnew process. Furthermore, he is a commissioner with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. “His insight will be invaluable when it’s time for re-accredidation,” Erwin said. He described Kennedy as “down to earth, bright and a good listener.” Kennedy will begin work at BHS intermittently during July, as a transition period, and then come on at full capacity in August. He talked about the stigma of the principal’s office for anyone who found themselves called there, whether that was a student, parent or staff. Kennedy said he wants

to put out the message that coming to his office means you’ll find “someone to talk to, someone with a sense of humor and a person with high expectations” and some one who clearly exhibits his work ethic. “We live in a complex, competitve world and we have to prepare our students for this,” Kennedy said. “With the pending changes about to explode,” Kennedy said, taking the Berlin job was an exciting opportunity. He also described changes going on at the school that are less visible, such as the new program of studies and the change in graduation requirements as well as the district’s increased focus on literacy.

“Berlin will not ever stand still, it’s an exciting place,” Kennedy said. Kennedy lives in Tolland with his wife and two children. He grew up in Watertown and attended public schools there for a while before transferring to Catholic schools: St. John’s Evangelist School in Watertown and, later, Sacred Heart in Waterbury. He later earned bachelor and master degrees from the Connecticut State University system and an administrative certificate from the University of Connecticut. Previously, he’s worked as a library media specialist and assistant principal.

“It was a quiet life,” Kennedy said of his early years. “Berlin is very much like the place I grew up.” Kennedy said, “I’m not bashful about standing up in front of stakeholders to talk about a vision for a new direction.” But on the other hand, he’s happy to “help change a tire in the rain. I’m a Boy Scout at heart.” Kennedy was a Boy Scout and “I never lost that,” he said. His two sons are Boy Scouts, too, and he volunteers with their troop. He said he tells them to “do a good turn daily…and I try to instill this in students.”

How Hannah helped me to find my way — fearlessly By Caitlyn Budnick

Inspired

To the editor: Thank you David Balfore, for an extremely well-written account of your four year battle with leukemia, while attending Berlin High School. You have been the poster child for couragegrace under pressure-and you will never know how many lives you have touched, or the names of the countless classmates, teachers, administrators, and staff you have inspired. Congratulations and best wishes for continued success in college and beyond. Brian Sullivan Berlin Check us out: www.berlincitizen.com

(Each year a select group of Berlin High School seniors have their “exemplary pieces” of writing presented, to the Board of Education. Over the next few weeks, The Citizen will publish some of these writings or excerpts from them. This week’s excerpt is from Caitlyn Budnick’s commended portfolio.) Hannah entered my life in a whirlwind, a benevolent tornado turning my life upside down. She exited just as suddenly, as a wave retreating from shore and leaving me alone on the beach, changed forever. There are people who walk in and out of our lives every day, but only a few make a difference. Hannah is that person for me. She was in my life for

only a year, but her influence still reverberates within me, even four years later. I met Hannah, just around the time of my middle school career, when teachers were all over us about the danger of the Internet and chat rooms. I was only twelve when I joined a Harry Potter website. Harry Potter was an obvious choice: I all but devoured the books. As a result of growing up with my nose perpetually stuck in a book, I was among the shyest girls in my grade. Joining a chat room was a crazy, out-of-mycomfort-zone move that still surprises me today. However, the website allowed me to maintain my shy anonymity and, through the people I met and the experiences I had, facilitated a transition from the person I was to who I am

now. My experience in the chat rooms was nothing like those teachers said it would be. For instance, that was where I met Hannah Krom, a native of Nashua, N. H. and the girl who changed my life forever. Hannah was sick with pulmonary hypertension, with a life expectancy of 20 years at the most. What struck me about Hannah was how she did not let her chronic illness define her; it was merely a fact of her existence. She had that lust for living and a light that shone all the way through. She lived by a simple belief: “Life may not be the party you asked for, but as long as you’re here you might as well dance.” Hannah knew that sometimes circumstances in life are not going to be favorable, but there is no reason to give up. She was dying, but that did not stop her from wanting to go to school every day so she could move on to high school. She did everything that she wanted to and fought for what she believed in. She could have used her Make-A-

Letters policy — E-mail letters to news@theberlincitizen; mail to 979 Farmington Ave., Kensington, CT 06037 or fax to (860) 829-5733. — The Citizen will print only one letter per person each month. — Letters should be approximately 300 words. Wish wish for anything, but she sacrificed it so that she got the chance to meet me, one of her pen pals, after only knowing me a short time. Through her — everything she showed me and did — I realized that life is what I make of it and there are no reasons to let the obstacles in my way keep me from living it. Hannah may have only lived until the age of 14, but she lived her life in a way I am not sure I can manage: fearlessly. On the surface, she did not seem to be afraid of anything, not even death. That was obviously not true, yet she showed me that fearlessness is not about a complete absence of fear. No one can ever let go of fear completely, but it is important to not let fear get in the way. She left an impression on me that made me realize that if I never try, none of my dreams will ever come true. That is the only way to ensure that result because, unless I try, I will never know. She might have been dying, but is that not true for all of us? I could die in a day, a year, or 50 years. Should that keep me from going out for what I want because I am afraid that it might not work out? If I did that I might live my life in contented bliss, never quite knowing what I am missing, but I would never know what true happiness feels like. Is avoiding sadness or disappointment really worth it? I took a risk when I became Hannah’s friend, and chose to meet her in real life, even after finding out about the brevity of her life. She died only a year after we met and, while I was miserable for a long time, I found that I got more out of the friendship than just sadness. When the depression passed, I could see everything that Hannah taught me about life and how to properly live it. See Hannah, next page

Life is not about how long we are here on this earth; it is about what we do with our time here. I am no longer afraid to go after what I want to do because I know that I only have one chance to go out and get it. Hannah has allowed this change to occur in me. This past year, I stepped past my comfort zone and applied for the coordinator position within Upbeat, my school’s peer leadership program. I wanted it with every ounce of my being, yet it terrified me. However, if I had not gone for it, I would not have the confidence and skills as a leader that I have gained since I was chosen for

the position. In the same way, I am heading down a career path that will not be easy as a lifestyle, yet there is nothing I would rather do. I do not know what I could do otherwise that would be so fulfilling. Reading brings me such joy and connects me with so many people that I want to help books make a difference in the world for the years to come. I believe that I can that as an editor at a publishing company. It takes great authors to write the books, but they also need someone to discover and publish the books that are going to make the real difference in the world. One day I am going to be the one finding those books that will reach out to people like me all across the world

Council members return from Berlin, Germany — Town officials made business contact and learned about German government while on a weeklong tour of several German cities in June. Budget woes trickle down to summer programs — The Parks and Recreation Department whas increased the price of the summer playground program this year because of budget restraints.

July 7, 2004 Locals divided over Stop & Shop — The Planning and Zoning Commission decided to continue the public hearing on the proposed Super Stop & Shop for a second time so that commission members could examine material presented by experts hired by A & P.

July 6, 2006 Petrovic finishes 2-over at Buick Championship — Former Berlin resident Tim Petrovic finished tied for 59th at the 2006 Buick Championship at River Highlands in Cromwell.

July 5, 2007 Smile when you see Lavery Lane — The dedication of Lavery Lane was a gesture of healing and an opportunity to make people smile whenever they see the street sign and remember Peter Lavery, said officials at the June 28 event.

and change and shape them in the way they did for me. Indirectly, reading led me to Hannah. If books had that much power in my life, then I

know there are countless other miracles that books can accomplish. The publishing business is competitive but the passion I have for

What is it? A “high five” to June Norton for the first correct answer to last week’s “What is it?” photo. June wrote: “The statues of American icons were once part of the Berlin Turnpike scene, I’m not certain, but I think it was near Germano Fence Co. that also sold sheds and gazebos. The turnpike was often called gasoline alley because of the many gas stations and also called Death Valley — no explanation needed.” June, one of the frequent responders to the “what is it” feature was pretty close. The replicas of Marilyn Monroe and the Statue of Liberty were, at one time, landmarks on the turnpike. Those statues and others were found at Janice’s Village, which sold various yard accessories. The business now specializes in outdoor playground equipment.

reading and the belief I have in the power of the written word is enough for me to continue working towards this goal.

Good-bye hair Abigail Cutler, left, donated eight inches of hair on her sixth birthday to Pantene Beautiful Lengths of the American Cancer Society. She is a student at Willard Elementary School. Izabella DuTremble, center, had her first hair cut at five and a half years old, as her father was serving overseas and requested that she not cut her hair until he returned home safely. Sports Rewind: Winter ‘Coats thrived By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

The Citizen is taking a look back at the year in Berlin High School athletics, a year when championships were claimed, history was made and records were broken. This week …. Winter 201011: BOYS BASKETBALL: Heading into the season, prognosticators didn’t see the Redcoats doing much. But Berlin players had other ideas. Without much size, and with a revamped starting lineup, the Redcoats would run up a stellar record of 196 and advance to the quarterfinals of the state tournament for the first time since 2006. The locals ended their regular season with an eightgame win streak. “This team was the most unselfish team I have ever coached,” BHS coach Mike Veneziano said. “They cared about each other and they had each others’ back throughout the season. I really believe I had the toughest kids in the state this year.” Berlin earned the No. 5

This past winter, the Newington-Berlin co-op ice hockey team claimed its second straight Central Connecticut Conference South Division title. seed in the CIAC Class L state tournament where it rattled off three straight wins before falling to No. 4 Lyman Hall-Wallingford, 5142, in the Elite 8. During the season, BHS senior Max DeLorenzo scored his 1,000th point and pulled down his 500th rebound. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Having lost four starters to

graduation, expectations weren’t particularly high for the Lady Redcoats. But as was the case with their male counterparts, the locals believed in themselves. The new-look Berlin squad capped its regular season with a nine-game win streak and garnered the No. 8 seed in the CIAC Class L state tournament. There, the Lady Redcoats won two

games before running out of steam. Berlin fell to top seed Bacon Academy, 52-41, in the quarterfinals and ended the season with a mark of 17-7. Back-to-back losses in early-January lit a fire under the Lady Redcoats. “They were getting a bit frustrated,” BHS coach Shelia King said after her team righted the ship. “But they never have stopped working. So

maybe we will peak at the right time.” Berlin has advanced beyond the first round of the state tournament four years in a row. WRESTLING: The Redcoats took a step in the right direction. After turning in some unBerlin-like seasons in recent years, this past winter, the Redcoats crowned two individual state champions and finished a respectable fourth at the CIAC Class M tournament. “Our goal was to be Top 3. But if you were to ask anyone in the Berlin community at the start of the season if we’d be in the Top 10, they would have told you you’re crazy. It just goes to show how hard this team has worked,” first-year BHS coach C.J. McCormack said. Berlin seniors Mason Powers (215) and Mike Fiorillo (171) claimed state titles in 2011. Prior to the Class M tournament, the Redcoats placed third at the Central Connecticut Conference South Division competition. Powers and Fiorillo were tops in their CCC South

Manzo’s troops hanging tough By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

Even an off year for Berlin baseball isn’t that bad. Despite competing minus several guys it had expected to have in uniform this summer, Berlin Post 68 is hanging tough. At press time, the young American Legion club was still within striking distance of earning a spot in the state tournament play-in. To qualify for the play-in, a team must win at least 13 of its 24 zone games. Berlin was 6-8 in Zone 3 heading into this week. “We’re just trying to get better every day,” Post 68 manager Rob Manzo said. “Yeah, we’re trying to

win. But it’s been more about trying to develop some of these guys, teaching them the game, working on the fundamentals, and playing hard and having energy.” With his roster lacking in size, Manzo was forced to promote several Junior Legion players this season — most likely before they were ready to make the leap. “It’s awfully difficult to compete at this level when you don’t have the majority of the best players playing in town,” said Manzo. But the veteran coach has no complaints about his team’s work ethic, pointing out that players showed up a half hour early for Sunday morning batting practice this past weekend.

“We have a lot of high-character kids … They’re putting in extra hours. I give the guys credit,” said Manzo, adding that Post 68’s veterans have “taken a lot on their shoulders.” One of the team’s older guys is Austin Barnes. The recent Berlin High School graduate is Post 68’s top pitcher, but has been used sparingly so as not to burn out his arm for the college season. With Barnes taking the hill just once every five days or so, Post 68 has leaned on other hurlers, including Connor Bennett and Tim Norton. “Those are two young guys that have come up through the system, that we’ll be relying on the rest of the way,” Manzo said.

At the plate, Mike Perno has had a good stretch as of late. Jamie Brancato also has gotten it done offensively, and in the field. “He’s done a great job for us so far this summer,” Manzo said of Brancato, a second baseman. “He has just really improved and turned himself into a nice little ballplayer.” As a team, Post 68 is batting in the .260 range, which Manzo pointed out is respectable in a wood bat league. “We’re starting to swing the bats a little better, but we just haven’t put it together consistently,” he said. “That’s just a sign of a team that hasn’t been there before.” The locals’ defense has been mostly rock solid. Post 68’s fielding percentage is over .960.

Youth Sports Baseball 12-year-old All-Stars The Berlin Little League 12-yearold All-Star team downed Jack Barry, 10-0 in four innings, last week in District 5 tournament play. Nick Naples, Vinny Biscoglio, Lynch and Jake Loiselle homered. Brendan Ebert and Jack Lynch took care of the pitching duties for Berlin. 9-10-year-old All-Stars The Berlin Little League 9-10year-old All-Star baseball team went 5-0 in District 5 tournament pool play. In Game 1, David Biscoglio threw a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts to lead Berlin past Farmington. At the plate, Berlin was led by Ryan Hyde, who went 3-for-3. Biscoglio had two hits. Teammate Ryan Terlecky had a two-RBI single. Berlin went on to top Yalesville, 8-2, and Southington-South, 13-1. Against Yalesville, Hyde earned the win in a complete game effort. The game-winner allowed just one hit after the first inning.

Yalesville jumped out to a tworun lead in the opening frame, but Berlin knotted the score in its first at-bat and never looked back. Powering Berlin’s offense was Biscoglio, who generated three hits. Anthony Veneziano, Gianni Fanelli and Biscoglio each scored two runs. Against Southington-South, game-winner Nick Carroll pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven. Leading the victors at the plate was Hyde (3 hits), Fanelli (2 hits) and Carroll (2 hits). From there, Berlin bested Plainville, 6-4. With Fanelli at the plate, Tyler Cop scored the game winning run on a passed ball. Carroll continued his dominance on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out five in three and one-third innings. Michael Giove earned the save. Berlin improved to 5-0 in pool play with a 14-3 four-inning victory over McCabe Waters. Biscoglio, Hyde, Giove, Fanelli and Sam Capodice pitched for the victors. Hyde had two hits.

Rewind Continued from page 19 weight class, as were teammates Jake Eliades (125), Will Matuszak (140) and Anthony Squitieri (160). During the regular season, Matuszak earned his 100th career victory. The senior went on to place third in Class M and fifth at the State Open — Berlin’s best finish there. ICE HOCKEY: The second-year Newington-Berlin team proved its inaugural season was no aberration. The local co-op defended its Central Connecticut Conference South Division title this past winter and rolled up a regular season record of 13-6-1. Newington-Berlin earned the fifth seed in the CIAC Division III state tournament where it fell to No. 4 seed, and eventual champion, Watertown-Pomperaug, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. During the regular season Newington-Berlin had the opportunity to play an outdoor game at Rentschler Field as part of the Whalers Hockey Festival. “It’s exciting,” Newington-Berlin coach Dave Harackiewicz said. “It’ll be a once in a lifetime experience, so we’re really looking forward to it.” INDOOR TRACK: Ras Morgan ac-

counted for eight of the 10 points the Berlin boys earned at the CIAC Class M meet. The senior finished second in the 55. The Redcoats were 14th overall. Morgan went on to place third at the State Open. BOYS SWIMMING: The Redcoats compiled a so-so record of 4-7 during the regular season, but turned things up a notch in the championship meets. Berlin finished second at the Central Connecticut Conference South Division meet powered by first-place finishes from Vinny Fischer (100 backstroke), Kevin Kozikowski (100 butterfly, 200 freestyle), Dan Klotz (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), the 200 medley relay team of Fischer, Taylor Bosse, Kozikowski and Klotz, and the 400 freestyle relay of Kozikowski, Fischer, Klotz and Kyle Nelson. The Redcoats went on to place 14th at the CIAC Class M state championship meet, and generated 34.5 points at the State Open. “It was a tremendous finish to a year of rebuilding,” said BHS coach Eileen Thurston. CHEERLEADING: The streak continues.

songs, “Money can’t buy you class” and “Chic C’est la Vie.” “The Real Housewives of New York City” is a docu-drama, part documentary, part drama. The producers plan the meetings and the events, but the dialogue and actions are spontaneous. The producers edit to heighten and highlight the drama. “(the show displays) a part of who we are,” said de Lesseps, “and usually the sucky part.” Recently, de Lesseps participated in a charity called “City Harvest.” The charity

gathers unused food from restaurants and stores and distributes it to community food programs. Because there was no drama, the show’s editors cut the footage. However, there is a nugget of reality in the show. Through the four years that the show aired, television viewers witnessed de Lesseps’s divorce with her husband and her effort to raise two kids. “It’s inspirational for other women,” she said. “My parents and my family are responsible for the woman I am today.” It was in Berlin that she learned how

to become an elegant person, she claims. “I learned how to be charming to get what I wanted from my brothers and sisters.” de Lesseps remembers her mother as a person who always had her hair done, always making time for herself. “My parents had great dignity and integrity.” Her parents, Roland and Rolande Nadeau, both grew up in Canada. Roland died seven years ago from cancer, but Rolande Nadeau still lives in Berlin, the house that de Lesseps grew up in. Roland Nadeau was a builder and developer. “He had the eye for the right
