Local firefighter for Team Red, White and Blue By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
The BHS cheerleaders finished tops in the CCC North.
The champs, once again The Berlin High School cheerleaders placed first in the Northern Division at the Central Connecticut Conference competition, and earned the highest score of the day, besting 23 other teams. This marked the second straight year that the BHS cheerleaders accomplished this.
Berlin has been helped along by the leadership of its seniors Emily Mitchell, Mikayla Giana, Victoria Giaccone, Erica Veley and Kelly Cappa. Next up, the BHS cheerleaders will compete in the Class L state competition, which is slated for Saturday, March 5.

An East Berlin volunteer firefighter will be climbing the 72 floors of 4 World Trade Center in New York City for a good cause. Derek Wnuk was just 11 years old on Sept. 11, 2001. Now he wants to honor the memories of those lost in the terrorist attacks. “I remember that day every day,” he said. On Sunday, March 13, Wnuk will be among 343 firefighters who will participate in the second annual NYC Firefighter Stair Climb. Each participant will ascend the building – in full gear – in honor of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters killed on Sept. 11. The climb will also memorialize fallen first responders and military personnel. Funds raised through the event will benefit Team Red, White and Blue (RWB), an organization with a mission to connect veterans to their
