Retiring fire chief to help his successor By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

Recently, the mystery unraveled when Lewis Southard, a retired forester, antique pistol collector and researcher from Virginia heard through the grapevine that the Spruce Brook Bridge adjacent to the North Mill site would soon be rebuilt. The site is on the National Register of Historic places, so is known to those interested in early arms manufacture. Southard contacted the State DOT offices, reaching Mandy Ranslow, staff archaeologist, and she put me in touch with him. We talked about the long ago dig and the society’s quest for the artifacts.
