Welcome to Berkshire Theatre Group!

I must begin by thanking you today on behalf of everyone in the Berkshire Theatre Group (BTG) community! Without you in our audience, none of this would mean a thing: the hours of rehearsal, set painting, perfecting lighting and sound cues. In this era of high-def streaming and entertainment on demand, live performance has never been more challenged or, we believe, more important.

Our theatres offer world-class entertainment and contribute to the quality of life in our region year-round. There is always something new on the horizon, from Pulitzer Prize-winning plays and full production musicals to avant-garde one acts, community wide celebrations of the arts, stand-up comedy and all genres of music.

Our historic Stanford White-designed Stockbridge Playhouse and gloriously restored Colonial Theatre are our marquee venues but, we’ve also learned that our more intimate settings like the Unicorn in Stockbridge and the Garage in Pittsfield help us reach a broader, more diverse audience. Our heritage is an integral part of our DNA and an important part of the history of American theatre. For almost 100 years artists have swarmed into the Berkshires seeking a creative home on our stages.

Less visible perhaps but of equal importance to our stellar performances is a broad based and sustained educational outreach to schools and collaborative partners throughout our region. In recent years the social-educational role of the arts has never been more important or more under threat as arts programming gets dismissed by some as a frivolous extra. We see first hand how theatre experiences make a difference in a young person’s life.

Our extensive programming, historic buildings and commitment to our actors can’t be supported by ticket sales alone. While we wouldn’t be here for today’s performance without ticket sales, we also need your special generosity to thrive and to serve. It is to that special sector of the audience—our members, sponsors and donors—that I extend extra thanks for what you do for the Berkshire Theatre Group of today…and tomorrow.

At Berkshire Theatre Group, we stand on a belief system. The system is based on wonder and emotion, and dedication to communicating the truths that lie in the human heart. We deliver cultural and creative nourishment by encouraging the youngest among us to keep their minds open, and by daring a community to believe that an artistic institution will provide it with a strong foundation for spiritual and economic growth.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the restoration of the glorious Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, and 2018 marks the 90th season of Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge. Combined as Berkshire Theatre Group, we are on the verge of celebrating 100 historic years of the development of imagination and enrichment on stages renowned for their beauty and artistic achievements.

BTG endeavors to understand what will provide sustenance for us to greet the future. We live in a world experiencing change in radical ways. The challenges will be extraordinary. We open our doorways and ask you to join us in strengthening not only our endeavor but also a way forward for our entire community. The changes afoot and our reaction to them will best be served by our provision of a home for the storytelling of our diverse experiences.

As you read through this program book, you will learn about the many businesses and

organizations that make up this remarkable region—we are so grateful to our advertisers.

You will learn about our arts in education programs that meet 13,000 deserving and incredibly talented students annually. And, you will find the names of hundreds of our friends who are the generous donors from individuals, to corporations, to foundations. Our donors are the lifeblood of all we do—we would not be here without their incredible support.

The progress we at Berkshire Theatre Group have made in the five years since our merger has been rewarding. I am confident in our ability to persevere, thrive and prosper for years to come. I know this because our trustees, patrons, audiences and artistic, administrative and technical staff share an unwavering commitment to do the right thing, to go above and beyond for the sake of the well-being of a community.

Summer Performance Training Apprentice Program Founded in 1929, our highly regarded Summer Performance Training Apprentice Program offers 16 students from across the country a multifaceted approach to actor training.

Students are vital members of the BTG community, rehearsing and performing on one of our many stages, taking classes each day in a wide range of performance techniques and presenting reviews and cabaret performances. The basic focus of the program is to improve the actors’ skills and depth of experience.

The Thaddeus Clapp house was built by Pittsfield industrialist Thaddeus Clapp in 1871. The adaptive reuse and restoration of this grand home will provide Berkshire Theatre Group with a multi-functional space for special events, rehearsals, readings, educational and community activities and more. The Feigenbaum Challenge

1925-2016

Bob Boland was first acquainted with The Colonial Theatre when he attended a movie presentation on the first day his family moved to Pittsfield in 1939. Bob was a champion for our historic theatre for the rest of his life. He founded the Friends of The Colonial Theatre Restoration in 1994, guided tours before and after the restoration, served as our resident historian with Bill Munn, and authored History of the Colonial Theatre Pittsfield, Massachusetts along with Anne Everest Wojtkowski, Jeffry Alan Bradway and William (Bill) Munn. If not for the tireless efforts of Bob Boland, The Colonial Theatre would not exist as it does today.
