TITLE Our Story B

erkshire Theatre Group’s mission is to support wide ranging artistic exploration and acclaimed performances in theatre, dance, music and entertainment. Berkshire Theatre Group’s celebrated five stages reflect the history of the American theatre; they represent a priceless cultural resource for the community. Our vision is to be a center for creative work that enriches, invigorates and transforms artists and audiences. And this is our story. . .

8 • (413) 997-4444

• In 1887 Stanford White designed and built the Stockbridge Casino. By 1927 the building fell into disrepair. • In 1903 The Colonial Theatre, designed by J.B. McElfatrick, opened its doors. The Barrymores, Sarah Bernhardt, Eubie Blake, George M. Cohan, Irene Dunne, Al Jolson, Will Rogers, Ted Shawn, and many others performed on the Colonial stage. • In 1928 the Stockbridge Casino was moved to its current location and the Berkshire

Playhouse was founded by Walter Clark, Daniel Chester French, Dr. Austen Riggs and the New York Tribune’s theater critic Walter Prichard Eaton. • In 1929 The Berkshire Playhouse launched a theatrical school, which boasts the likes of Jane Wyatt, Katharine Hepburn and James Cagney as its students. • In 1934 The Colonial Theatre closed due to the depression.

• In 1937 the Colonial reopened, a new marquee, projection room and two retail stores added to the front of the building; it operated primarily as a movie theater.

Our Story • In 1951 the Colonial closed again due to the rise of TV and the decline of touring theatrical companies. • In 1952 the Colonial was put up for auction. Lowest bidder, George Miller, wanted to save the building rather than demolish it, and thus Miller Art Supply moved in. • In 1964, the Berkshire Playhouse was reorganized as a non-profit organization and renamed the Berkshire Theatre Festival. • In 1976 the Berkshire Theatre Festival’s playhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

10 • (413) 997-4444

• In 1994 Friends of the Colonial Theatre Restoration was formed by Bob Boland. • In 1996 The Unicorn Theatre was reopened after a lengthy renovation and became BTF’s official second stage and a home for new and experimental work. • In 1998 The Colonial Theatre was designated a National Historic Treasure by the Save America’s Treasures Program of the National Park Service and was visited by then First Lady, Hillary Clinton. • In 2001 The Colonial Theatre was purchased from the Miller Family and in 2004 The

Colonial Theatre Association began the process of restoration. • In 2006 the Colonial reopened after a $21 million restoration. The inaugural performance was a touring production of RENT.

• In 2010 Berkshire Theatre Festival and The Colonial Theatre merged to create Berkshire Theatre Group. • In 2011 Berkshire Theatre Group built the outdoor Neil Ellenoff Stage, dedicated to family friendly theatre, and opened The Garage, dedicated to local and regional music. • In 2013 Berkshire Theatre Festival celebrates its 85th summer season and The Colonial Theatre celebrates its 110th birthday.

Awards & Scholarships

The Richie Dupont Award

The Richie duPont Award was started in memory of the talented young actor, Richie duPont, who was a part of the Berkshire Theatre Group community, where he performed in two productions on the Fitzpatrick Main Stage. To honor his memory, the fund was established in 2005 to enable children to pursue their dreams of being on stage and afford them the opportunity to attend one of the BTG PLAYS! camp sessions.

Award, in memory of the pianist, composer and musical director, is offered to an apprentice with strong musical theatre skills.

PERFORMING ARTS FOR SCHOOLS Scholarship Fund

The Performing Arts for Schools Program is so important to our community that donors have stepped forward to guarantee that all students, regardless of financial situation, have access to this creativity-building resource. Ruth & Nicholas Boraski established an

The Betsey McKearnan Scholarship Fund endowment gift, the income from which The Betsey McKearnan Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to apprentices entering BTG’s Training Program each summer, in addition to two full apprenticeship scholarships. The Margaret Brenman Gibson Scholarship, in memory of Ms. Gibson the noted psychologist, teacher, writer and social activist, is awarded to a deserving female apprentice; while the Wally Harper

BTG Trustee N e il Ell e n off

The cast of Pinocchio, 2012

When asked why he has made extraordinary contributions in the treasure and care of BTG, Neil Ellenoff responds with: “I love the Berkshire Theatre because it reminds me of what New York theatre used to be like.” This is high praise from a gentleman who possesses a library filled with Playbills from Broadway productions—hits and misses. Neil Ellenoff has been enjoying work on our stages for many years. His trusteeship is an example of enormous commitment and leadership. This year, we celebrate his generosity and friendship. We are very proud to introduce the next generation of theatre goers to family programming outdoors on our Neil Ellenoff Stage, and no one’s feet tap more happily than Neil’s during our Ellenoff Musical Theatre Series. In this most remarkable and historic year—WE SALUTE YOU—NEIL ELLENOFF!
