A Tribute to the Anglican and Episcopal Faculty

A

mong the resources that Berkeley Divinity School students have at Yale, nothing is more significant than an Anglican/Episcopal faculty that currently numbers eighteen—more than some freestanding denominational seminaries. BDS itself supports two senior faculty chairs, two adjunct positions, and two lecturers. In addition, YDS has six senior (tenured) and two junior faculty members as well as four lecturers representing the Anglican tradition, providentially spread across the theological disciplines. We are pleased to hold up each of these scholars and educators, and to offer a brief description of their work and contributions to the wider church:

Faculty Christopher Beeley (BDS): Walter H. Gray Associate Professor of Anglican Studies and Patristics. Christopher is active in the Episcopal Gathering of Leaders, and serves on the board of the Anglican Theological Review. His book Leading God’s People: Wisdom from the Early Church for Today offers principles of church leadership as they were taught by the great pastor-theologians of the early church. Most recently, he has published The Unity of Christ: Continuity and Conflict in Patristic Tradition. Joseph Britton (BDS): McFaddin Associate Professor (Adjunct) of Pastoral Theology. Serving as President and Dean of the School, Joseph also teaches a core course in the history and theology of the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion. Author of numerous articles on Anglican ecclesiology, he has also written the forthcoming Abraham Heschel and the Theological Uses of Piety. He has served as Associate Editor of the Anglican Theological Review and is Convener of the Council of Seminary Deans.

The Newsletter is published three times per year by Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. For more information about Berkeley, please contact: Berkeley Divinity School at Yale 409 Prospect Street New Haven, CT 06511-2167 Telephone: 203.432.9285 Fax: 203.432.9353 www.yale.edu/berkeleydivinity

Maggi Dawn: Associate Dean of Marquand Chapel and Associate Professor (Adjunct) of Religion and Literature. Former chaplain at Robinson College, University of Cambridge, Maggi joined the faculty in 2011. She teaches liturgical theology, is a musician and composer of contemporary hymns, and is the author of The Accidental Pilgrim: New Journeys on Ancient Pathways and The Writing on the Wall: High Art, Popular Culture, and the Bible. John Hare: Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology. John was asked to give the prestigious Gifford Lectures in 2005, which he delivered under the title “Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself.” Active in teaching both at the Divinity School and Yale College, he is the author of The Moral Gap, God’s Call, God and Morality: A Philosophical History and Why Bother Being Good?
